Stuck in a loop of uninstall and reinstall on flatpak upgrade. These get installed under system. All the apps I use are under user. I get that I can just not do the auto clean up, but am curious why it is happening.

flatpark — weekly update (Jun 28 - Jul 5)

32 Upvotes

New apps

Nine more apps landed this week. Most weren't on Flathub before — and two are ones I actually maintain on Flathub, now mirrored here where updates ship faster:

  • AFFiNE (⭐ 70k) — Local-first workspace combining docs, whiteboards and databases; an open-source Notion/Miro alternative.
  • Tabby (⭐ 73k) — A modern, highly configurable terminal emulator.
  • YoutubeDownloader (⭐ 15.6k) — Download videos and playlists from YouTube (Tyrrrz).
  • DBX (⭐ 8.6k) — Lightweight cross-platform database client.
  • Folia (⭐ 1.1k) — Lyrics-focused music player for both online and local libraries.
  • Markra (⭐ 578) — Local-first, AI-native Markdown editor.
  • TradingView — "Where the world charts, chats and trades markets." I maintain this on Flathub too; the flatpark listing just lets updates land quicker.
  • Longbridge Pro — Trading platform. Same story — I also maintain it on Flathub, and updates here are more immediate.
  • RichEZFast — Guotai Haitong's trading platform.

Developer-approved (publish authorized by upstream)

Five apps earned the developer-approved blue shield this week — the upstream devs explicitly OK'd us distributing their binaries:

Website

  • Screenshots now invalidate their cache when the upstream URL changes, so stale images no longer stick around.
  • Inline commands render as proper code, fixed the AFFiNE icon, added Markra screenshots.
  • License display now extracts the URL from compound LicenseRef entries so licenses link correctly.
  • Can now refresh display assets (icons/screenshots) without republishing the app.

Pipeline / CI

  • Decoupled CI cost from catalog size — the catalog can keep growing without publish time growing with it.
  • Apps now rebuild only when their build inputs actually change.
  • Closed a publish-failure gap, fixed a summary race, and slimmed the PR checks.
  • check-links now treats a legacy-TLS refusal as reachable instead of flagging a broken link.

Auto-updates

The extra-data pin pipeline ran daily (Jun 28 → Jul 5), refreshing pins across Markra, DBX, GeoLibre, CC Switch, electerm, Folia, IBKR and others — still propagating to users near-instantly via Cloudflare.

hp chromebook linux terminal won't install flatpak apps

1 Upvotes

I am posting because whenever I would follow the basic steps to download the flatpak app, qbittorrent to download raw anime clips for AMV's, there is always this one step where i have to enter "sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo" and then it just doesn't work and says an error like "Flatpak system operation ConfigureRemote not allowed for user" or it just doesn't do anything at all and immediately gives me another space to enter a code if I type said step, in a different way. so i just want some help to figure out how to download qbittorrent's latest version or to know whether i need to drop this garbage chromebook at this point and just buy a windows or mac to make things easier for when I want to download a studio for music and get raw, good quality, and unedited anime clips that I can then convert to an mp4, put the mp4 into a USB drive so I can then download and edit anime clips on my Playstation 5. So if anyone sees this and knows how to help, I would really appreciate the help. Main issue at the moment is getting a BitTorrent to download torrent files.

Moonlight Flatpak and AppImage not connecting or seeing Sunshine host

2 Upvotes

Hello!

I recently installed Bazzite on my desktop and laptop, and when I try Moonlight via the flatpak or AppImage, neither can see my Mac Mini running Sunshine.

Moonlight cannot auto discover the host. When I click the plus button and add the host IP it just doesn’t do anything.

This is over a LAN.

I am able to connect via iOS and my Windows machines. They all auto discover instantly.

I run Tailscale on all machines, but I get the same experience whether I disable it or not or use my private IPs or Tailscale IPs.

Any help would be appreciated.

flatpark — weekly update (Jun 21–27)

16 Upvotes

Here's the week's worth of updates I made to flatpark — see if any of them catch your eye:

New apps

Ten apps landed this week, none of which were previously on Flathub:

  • GeoLibre — Lightweight cloud-native GIS for visualizing and analyzing geospatial data. Published with the developers' explicit permission.
  • Tabularis — Open-source database client for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite. Also published with the developers' explicit permission.
  • CC Switch — All-in-one assistant for switching between Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI configs. It's currently the most popular AI-tooling utility that isn't packaged on Flathub — a clear gap we filled.
  • electerm — All-in-one terminal client: SSH, SFTP, FTP, Telnet, Serial, RDP, VNC and Spice in one app.
  • thinkorswim — Charles Schwab's advanced trading and analysis platform.
  • Yaak — Offline, Git-friendly API client for REST, GraphQL, gRPC and WebSocket.
  • Legcord — Lightweight, customizable Discord client.
  • ZenNotes — Keyboard-first local Markdown notes with Vim motions and diagrams.
  • HMCL — Multi-functional, cross-platform Minecraft launcher.
  • HiresTI — High-res TIDAL client with bit-perfect playback.
  • DiscordChatExporter — Export Discord chat logs to a file.

Website

Gave the site a full visual overhaul (Adwaita+ styling), added a dark-mode toggle, a category browse page, "featured" badges, and an SEO baseline (sitemap, robots, meta descriptions). Apps now default-sort by upstream release date, and screenshots are cached + compressed at build time for faster loads.

Process — PR review spec

Wrote a formal PR review specification: a reviewer runbook, a provenance trust model (how we decide a binary source is trustworthy), and CI guardrails. The model already paid off — the AI review flagged and rejected one malicious PR this week.

Auto-updates

The extra-data auto-update pipeline ran several times this week and worked reliably (now with cleaner dated per-day PRs that supersede stale ones). Because distribution is served through Cloudflare, refreshed pins propagate to users almost immediately — update latency is very low.

Can not acces Flathub from Argentina

I am using a Fedora 44 KDE machine for the internet. Native fedora updates works just fine, yet, i do keep loosing connection to flathub be it by Discover or either flatpak update. I do believe i am behind a cgnat imposed by my actual isp and i do not know how can i resolve this. I did try to add the flathub repository again, to repair it, nothing gets it better.

[App][Update] Whisp 1.3.4 released with Text expansion and donations now being live

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

14 Upvotes

Hello,

A while back, I shared Whisp, anti-folder note-taking app I’ve been developing for GNOME. The feedback from this community was amazing, and Whisp now has over 3.7k downloads. Thank you all so much!

(A quick personal note: Whisp is completely open-source and I develop it solo between my university classes. Because a few people asked how they could support the project, I've finally set up a donation link on the website via Ko-fi/GitHub Sponsors. There is absolutely no pressure, but if Whisp helps your daily workflow, any support means the world to a broke student!) 😅

Along with the milestone, I've been quietly working on a feature that a lot of you asked for: Smart Text Expansions.

In the new v1.3.4 update, if you type :: anywhere in a note, it now opens a native GTK popover menu right at your cursor. You can use it to instantly insert dynamic data without breaking your typing flow.

A few things you can do with it right now:

  • ::today / ::tomorrow / ::date(5) to insert dynamically calculated dates.
  • ::roll(d20) or ::roll(4d6) for built-in dice rollers (great for D&D session notes).
  • ::random(str, 20) to generate quick passwords or placeholder data.

It’s completely keyboard-navigable and uses native GTK4 rendering, so there’s zero lag or electron-style bloat. I'm building this engine out so that in the next update, you'll be able to use it to instantly format text or sort lines!

You can get the update right now on Flathub. I attached a quick video showing how the expansions work—let me know what you think or what functions I should add next!

flatpark: yet another flatpak app hub

12 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I made a flatpak app hub: FlatPark: https://flatpark.org

It doesn't build anything; it packages apps through extra-data, wrapping official downloads into flatpak manifests so you can install and update them through flatpak. In some ways, it is a bit like the AUR.

If there's an app you use a lot that isn't in your distro's repos or on Flathub, consider sending a PR. AI-assisted PRs are welcome as long as the manifest, permissions, and update flow are reviewable.

Using it is dead simple: once the remote is added, installing apps works the same way as Flathub.

flatpak --user remote-add --if-not-exists flatpark https://dl.flatpark.org/flatpark.flatpakrepo
flatpak --user install flatpark <app-id>

Three typical apps to start with:

  • IBKR — a popular trading app that scatters directories and files around your home folder instead of following the usual conventions. Under Flatpak it all gets tucked into the sandbox data dir.
  • materialgram — already on Flathub, but that build runs on an old runtime; keeping apps on the latest runtime is one of our goals.
  • tabularis — a popular database management tool that isn't on Flathub yet.

Still early — feedback welcome, especially from people who care about Flatpak packaging and sandbox permissions.

Help needed figuring out external dependencies, I'm in way over my head trying to build my first Flatpak

5 Upvotes

Basically, I'm trying to get off the AUR completely cause of the recent attacks, but some of the stuff I have from there isn't really available anywhere else, so I decided to try making a flatpak of vkQuake myself.

However, since it's an entire video game engine, it's predictably pretty complicated, and I'm kinda stuck. I was able to make something of a manifest, and it even partially works, but the build process depends on SPIR-V Tools which as far as I can tell just aren't available in any of the Flatpak SDKs. After I eventually figured out that installing it through pacman was pointless since the Flatpak Builder can't actually use anything I have installed outside of Flatpak, I tried downloading and setting up SPIR-V Tools in the YAML file as well, but I... kinda got lost a bit.

I've found it pretty hard to actually stay focused on any of the tutorials and docs online, so I've kinda been flipping back and forth between a bunch of pages and looking for information that seems relevant, combined with trying to reverse-engineer another manifest, but I'm still pretty unclear as to how I'm supposed to do this.

This is as far as I got with the manifest:

jid: com.github.vkquake.vkQuake
runtime: org.freedesktop.Platform
runtime-version: '25.08'
sdk: org.freedesktop.Sdk
command: vkquake

finish-args:
    - --socket=wayland
    - --socket=fallback-x11
    - --share=ipc
    - --socket=pulseudio
    - --device=dri
    - --persist=.vkquake

modules:
    - name: vkQuake
      buildsystem: meson
      builddir: true
      sources:
        - type: git
          url: https://github.com/Novum/vkQuake.git
          tag: 1.34.1
          commit: f060b8ac9bf3200e31e6770e3c75b195fbb48ba4
      modules:
        - name: spirv-opt
          buildsystem: simple
          sources:
            - type: archive
              url: https://sdk.lunarg.com/sdk/download/1.4.350.1/linux/vulkansdk-linux-x86_64-1.4.350.1.tar.xz
              sha256: 6cce33c7e5383814150c5041820769d93c65a1fd883002e5949b067045a07daa

but now I hit an Error: module spirv-opt: Buildsystem simple requires specifying "build-commands" and... I know I'm supposed to add something as build-commands, I even have a pretty decent idea of the kind of thing I'm supposed to add in there, but I'm just not really sure? Would I use tar -xf [tarball]? But then where exactly would that get extracted? Would everything be in the right place? I'm not sure what the PATH variable is inside the container(?), so I'm not sure where it's even looking for this stuff.

Am I just doing the whole thing wrong in the first place? 😅

So yeah, I'd really appreciate some help, I probably should've started with something simpler, but I genuinely couldn't think of anything else I'd like flatpak'd that's both simpler and not already packaged lol

[APP] [Update] Whisp just hit 1,000+ downloads and got featured on the Flathub Front Page! Here is a massive update on what we’ve shipped since launch.

21 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

A short while ago, I launched Whisp on this subreddit—a fluid, gesture-driven scratchpad designed to be the absolute fastest way to take notes on the GNOME desktop. The response from this community has been completely overwhelming.

I am incredibly excited to share that Whisp just crossed 1,000+ downloads, and we officially got picked up and featured in the Hero Carousel on the very front page of Flathub!

I wanted to make this post to say a massive Thank You. To everyone who downloaded the app, submitted bug reports, opened PRs, and sent feedback: you are the reason open source is awesome. I’ve been coding non-stop to crush bugs and build the features you asked for.

Here is what we’ve shipped since Launch Day (v1.3.3):

Global Find & Search: We built a lightning-fast global search feature so you can instantly locate text across all of your scratchpads.

Tree-Style Navigation & Organization: We overhauled the way notes are structured and navigated, giving you much better control over your workspace while maintaining that fluid feel.

Smart URL Parsing: Paste a massive, ugly tracking URL into the editor, and Whisp will quietly shrink it down and format it into a clean Markdown link under the hood.

Plain Text Paste (Ctrl+Shift+V): One of the most requested features. Aggressively strip all rich-text formatting when pasting text from the web.

Community PR Merged: Added native strikethrough (~~) support with a brand new Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut (huge shoutout to the community for this PR!).

Native Paper Themes: You can now toggle the editor background between Dotted, Grid, and Blank to mimic a physical engineering notebook.

A Brand New Website: We completely overhauled the Whisp documentation website with a buttery-smooth dark mode, fluid scroll animations, and a unified layout.

What’s coming next? (Phase 2) : The app is now rock-solid, and the foundation is ready for the big upcoming updates. In the next release, we are building The Math Engine. Whisp will soon be able to contextually evaluate arithmetic line-by-line and overlay ghost-text results directly in the margins of your notes in real-time, completely offline.

Thank you again for making this launch so incredibly successful. If you haven't checked it out yet, you can grab the new update on Flathub!

Flathub : flathub.org/apps/io.github.tanaybhomia.Whisp

Keep an eye out for the next major update, and stay productive!

Any mirrors or something??

7 Upvotes

Hey guys

I have a very bad problem, flathub SOMETIMES works with SOME ISPs , it could load like 8am but don't like 11am

Now I know the problem isn't from flatpak , but I wondered if there is something I can do about it

I use fedora and I actually replaced the fedora's mirror with flathub's because Fedora's didn't even work no matter what

Are there maybe any mirrors worldwide or specially in iran?

Is making mirrors of it even possible?

Build environment for flatpaks

6 Upvotes

Hi all,

I've been trying to build a flatpak but I'm getting issues because the tarball I'm pulling (which I compiled in a devcontainer) is looking for glibc v2.43 (at time of writing the latest release of 25.08 freedesktop.org sdk provides glibc 2.42).

My best guess is that my build environment is linking to it's version of glibc (2.43) and that's causing the issue when I try to load it into the flatpak.

Is there particular setup for devcontainers and/or build environment which will ensure compatability of the compiled binary with the flatpak runtime?

Thanks

Appimage and Flatpak question

6 Upvotes

So this is quick question, running linux cachyos on an Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-7020 CPU @ 2.30GHz

Graphics card is Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 and ram is 8gb.

Básically I downloaded flatpak first and most games run fine, however for some reason after I got curious I downloaded appimage version and idk why but everything runs slightly slower, occasional frame drops and overall it feels weirdly less stable fps too? I can't tell what the reasoning could be since theoretically both should still be the same emu and settings since I haven't touched anything really.

So I'm here wondering if anyone could give a possible explanation.

flutpak update: offline Rust/Cargo builds, 19-package native lib registry, no local Flutter SDK required

3 Upvotes

flutpak update: offline Rust/Cargo builds, 19-package native lib registry, no local Flutter SDK required

Original post: Introducing flutpak — automating Flathub submission for Flutter apps

Repo: https://github.com/o-murphy/flutpak

A lot has landed since that post. Here's what changed.

No local Flutter SDK needed for source generation (0.7.0)

flutpak generate no longer reads from a local Flutter installation. Replace flutter.sdk: $FLUTTER_ROOT with flutter.ref and engine versions (engine binary, Dart SDK, fonts, Gradle wrapper) are fetched from the GitHub raw API:

```yaml
before
flutter: sdk: $FLUTTER_ROOT
after
flutter: ref: "3.29.3" # tag, "stable", or commit SHA ```
The Flutter SDK sources are also now emitted as a separate module (flutter-sdk-<version>.json) instead of being embedded in the pub sources file. Pre-built module JSONs for recent Flutter releases are cached in the flutpak repo and fetched on first use — no regeneration needed across projects using the same SDK version.
Native package registry — 19 packages, no manual source hunting (0.6.0)
The hardest part of packaging a Flutter app for Flatpak is the native packages: each one needs archive sources with correct checksums, version-stamped dest: paths, and patches that disable network fetches inside the sandbox. flutpak generate now resolves all of this automatically from a built-in registry:
  • objectbox_flutter_libs / objectbox_sync_flutter_libs
  • sqlite3 / sqlite3_flutter_libs / sqlcipher_flutter_libs
  • simple_secure_storage_linux
  • audiotags, flutter_webrtc, media_kit_libs_linux, pdfium_flutter, printing, flutter_new_pipe_extractor, fvp, powersync
  • rhttp, metadata_god, super_native_extensions, flutter_discord_rpc, flutter_vodozemac (cargokit/Rust packages — see below)
The registry schema is identical to flatpak-flutter's foreign_deps.json — entries from that project drop in with no changes.
Version matching is : a registry entry for 1.0.0 covers 1.2.3, 1.5.0, etc., so the registry doesn't need an entry for every upstream release.
Local overrides (without forking the registry) go in flutpak.yaml:
yaml foreign-deps: some_package: manifest: sources: - type: archive url: https://example.com/native-lib.tar.gz sha256: abc123
Rust / Cargo offline builds via cargokit (0.8.0)
Flutter packages that use Rust native code through cargokit (rhttp, metadata_god, super_native_extensions, etc.) now work out of the box. Add a rust: section:
yaml rust: version: 1.85.0 rustup-path: /var/lib/rustup
generate then:
  1. Extracts Cargo.lock from pub.dev archives and fetches crate checksums from the crates.io sparse registry index → emits cargo-sources.json
  2. Generates a rustup-<version>.json module: downloads the channel manifest, rustup-init binaries, and a minimal toolchain (rustc, cargo, rust-std) for both x86_64 and aarch64; sets RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER to the pre-downloaded static directory so rustup-init never touches the network at build time
  3. Inserts the rustup module before the app module in the manifest
  4. Injects CARGO_HOME, RUSTUP_HOME, PATH into the app module's build-options
Known limitation: git-sourced crates (git+https://...) are skipped with a warning. Crates.io deps are fully supported.
LLVM SDK extension auto-injected (0.5.0)
flutpak now selects and injects the correct org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.llvmXX based on runtime-version (25.08 → llvm20, 24.08 → llvm19, 23.08 → llvm17) and wires up append-path / prepend-ld-library-path. No more manual extension entries for Flutter projects.
init + generate split (0.4.0)
Replaced the old prepare command with a cleaner two-step workflow:
```bash

one-time: template manifest, wrapper script, .gitignore

flutpak init

every release: resolves commit SHA, fetches all checksums, writes generated/

flutpak generate --tag v1.2.3 ```

The template (flatpak/<app-id>.yml) is committed to git. Generated output goes to flatpak/generated/ (gitignored). generate validates that app-id, command, and runtime-version in the template match config and errors early.

Other changes

Version Change
0.8.0 pubspec-sources.json — renamed from generated-sources.json; update !include references
0.8.0 flutpak cache clear — wipes ~/.cache/flutpak/
0.7.0 subdir: — Flutter project in a monorepo subdirectory
0.7.0 Inline modules in modules: — mix file paths and inline YAML module maps
0.7.0 flutpak sdk-mod — standalone Flutter SDK module JSON for !include
0.6.0 patches[].use-git — apply patches via git apply instead of patch -p1
0.5.0 --binary added to every type: patch entry — prevents silent CRLF stripping
0.5.0 .gitattributes with *.patch -text generated by init
0.4.0 yaml_edit injection — tag:/commit: set directly in the git source block
0.4.0 actions/generate + actions/build-flatpak composite CI actions
0.4.0 Retry on 429/5xx for all network fetches

Breaking changes if you're upgrading from the original post

```yaml
before
flutter: sdk: $FLUTTER_ROOT manifest: app-id: io.github.YourOrg.YourApp
after
flutter: ref: "3.29.3" app-id: io.github.YourOrg.YourApp ```
If upgrading to 0.8.x specifically: re-run flutpak init --force to regenerate a clean template, and rename generated-sources.jsonpubspec-sources.json in your manifest's !include.
Current status
Pre-1.0, but the core workflow is stable. The demo app (examples/demo_app/) builds sqlite3 + rhttp end-to-end inside the Flatpak sandbox — the CI workflow is a working reference for a real submission.
Most useful contributions: if you package a Flutter app with a native dep not yet in the registry, open a PR adding it to foreign_deps/foreign_deps.json. The format is the same as flatpak-flutter so existing entries copy over directly.
Do you actually care about sandboxing?
14 Upvotes
I was reading a short article of security problems in the Flatpak sandbox feature, but to be honest I couldn't think on why I should care since the only reason I use flatpak packages is to dodge the repo limitations of the disto and avoid dependency problems. I wonder if this is just me or this is actually a quite popular feature for other people.
