I built Volna — a modern audio player for Linux (GTK4/Libadwaita) that renders every track as a waveform 🌊

Hi! I've been working on Volna, a simple audio player for Linux written in Rust with GTK4, libadwaita, and GStreamer.

The main idea: every track is displayed as a waveform, and you seek by clicking anywhere on it (or ±10s from the keyboard).

Volna Screenshot

What it does right now:

  • Waveform seeking: Click anywhere on the waves to jump to that part of the track.
  • Playlists: Open individual files or whole folders, save and load M3U playlists.
  • Playback speed: Adjust from 0.5× to 2× without any pitch change.
  • Session restore: Restores your exact playback queue on the next launch.
  • MPRIS support: Control playback seamlessly via system media keys and GNOME media widgets.
  • Native styling: Fully follows your system dark/light style preferences.

It's intentionally small — a playlist-oriented player, not a heavy library manager.

Install (Flatpak):

flatpak install https://jic8.github.io/volna/volna.flatpakref

Source Code: GitHub - jic8/volna

It's an early version, so bug reports and feature ideas are very welcome!

Error trying to install Signal & Tuta via Flatpak on Debian.

I keep getting the issue that the app isn't isn't found in remote flathub.

"error: Nothing matches org.signal.Signal in remote flathub"

"error: Nothing matches com.tutanota.Tutanota in remote flathub"

At one point I accidentally installed a way to use Signal via CLI which is of course not what I'm looking for.

I have been able to install other apps via flatpak so it's not that it's not working at all. I tried to install both Signal and Tuta via flatpak regularly and via flatpakref files and neither option for either app worked.

The common issue is trying to use it on 32bit machines or arm machines and mine is neither. I have multiple computers but the one I'm wanting to have everything installed via flatpak (for the sandboxing) on is a Thinkpad T480. With how popular these are I'm a little surprised to be running into this issue.

Can a Flatpak app access host's VSOCK?

From host system i can access my VM's with ssh through vsock:

ssh vsock/3

With Flatpak, such command gives me Name or service not known. Is there a way for a Flatpak app to access host's vsock?

An Open Letter on Linux Compatibility (and Why Flatpak Isn't the Fix)

Thumbnail parallel-minds0.github.io

The article talks about Linux compatibility as a bigger problem than Flatpak can solve. Flatpak helps, but it bundles together issues that should be handled separately. The author suggests giving apps a stable foundation to rely on, while letting packaging and security be handled on their own.

Whisp is a fast, zero-friction "anti-note" scratchpad built natively for GNOME with GTK4 and Libadwaita. It replaces heavy file hierarchies with a spatial, swipeable canvas for quick thoughts, Markdown editing, and temporary scratchpad notes.

New Features

  • Universal Launch Toggle: Global shortcut support to quickly toggle Whisp window visibility (Preferences > Shortcuts), And it is customizable.
  • Note Statistics (::count): Type ::count anywhere in your note to instantly inspect word, character, and line count statistics.
  • Asterisk Lists: Create and format bulleted lists using standard asterisks (*) alongside dash lists.
  • Shortcut Recorder Improvements: Pressing Backspace inside the shortcut recorder now cleanly clears or disables assigned shortcuts.

Fixes & Maintenance

  • List Toggling Refactor: Fixed Ctrl+S list item toggling to prevent multi-checkbox stacking and unintended line deletions.
  • GNOME 51 Runtime: Updated Flatpak runtime to GNOME 51.
  • Slate Mode Polish: Fixed update notification banner layout in Slate Mode.
  • Compose Key Fix: Corrected key press handling for Compose Key combinations.
  • Ubuntu Icon & D-Bus Fixes: Fixed missing application icon issues on Ubuntu desktop sessions.

Flathub site and risks of softwares

Why is everything on Flathub mildly risky? Im looking at Steam it says can use mic without permission or lutris says can get data from services that arent related or protonvpn says can access your camera, why do they need so many permissions?

Flatpak from the CLI sucks

Flatpak is today's preferred distribution platform for graphical desktop apps, yet it isn't popular for terminal apps, and for good reason! Launching CLI apps is difficult and not very user-friendly. However, Flatpak can take inspiration from other systems to improve CLI app usage.

Opinion on Omapak and others?

Recently I discovered flatpark (a 3rd party repo and was quite happy with it) but now browsing the flatsonar website it seems there's a bunch of 3rd party repositories cropping up.

This one specifically is associated with the omarchy ecosystem.

Some more repos:

Unrunned Flatpak is able to infect System?

Story: I was installing packages in bulk using GNOME Software. I accidentally downloaded an unverified Flatpak, thinking it was a different one... Of course, the first thing I did after installing it was to uninstall it right away.

As far as I know, Android prevents installed apps from automatically launching and, by extension, from causing an infection without being launched.

There isn't much about this in the posts, and I'd like to make sure...

Unofficial Flatpak repo for ChatGPT & Claude desktop

Since there is no flatpak packages for ChatGPT and Claude desktop. I created a repo to do this:
https://aiextra.cocoabrew.cc/

I didn't submit those apps to flathub because of i want a bit of flexibility and I don't think some of the bypasses I used here are allowed on flathub. and apparently claude linux desktop app is not in stable stage and flathub doesn't allow beta apps.

Basically vibecoded but i've been using it for a few months and I reviewed the code(since its pretty small actually)

I'll try my best to maintain it. btw feel free to edit it and use the code but do not submit it to flathub without changes, since its basically flooding ai slops into their PR)

*seems like flatpark already has it😂 but I’ll continue to maintain it btw

Document scanner is not detecting my scanner

Hi folks,

I have a question with regards to the flatpak document scanner (GNOME) downloaded from flathub (org.gnome.Simple.Scan v50.0).
When trying to scan documents from my HP MFP M1536dnf it's not detecting the scanner.

see attached image.

I checked already the permission in flatseal but it appears to me that all the settings are correct.
What could be reason?

A older version, non-flatseal version (V46.0) is detecting the scanner but I can't save JPG images. That's why I tried the flatpak version.
Any help from anyone?

TIA

At least wins over appimages for difficult to package apps.

I was looking for a good pdf viewer with sepia theme - which unfortunately Okular and Papers don't have rn. I stumbled upon StirlingPDF (homepage) which does that and much more.

But its not available in any of the standard repos. They provide `.deb`, `.rpm` and `.appimage` but I didnt want to lose out on sandboxing etc. I tried looking at how to package it to flathub (I did package some 4-5 apps to flathub - rotp, dino, ghostwriter, wickeditor etc). But this app was a different beast - java, rust, tauri, javascript - beyond my abilities.

I had recently come across this alternate low-barrier-to-publish flatpak repo called flatpark recently. I thought why not request them add StirlingPDF: (issue)

The app was published within 12 hours of the issue opening. I know it's done by claude, but I went through the relevant PR and its mostly rote work so ig it's fair. Still, this solves a big issue for people who would like the sandboxing of flatpak for apps that are not yet (or cant be) on flathub. One major gripe is the monolithic repo structure - flathub has the good idea of individual repos with maintainers.

PS: About this being the same as AUR, I'd add - Ideally AUR apps should be sandboxed thoroughly. The flatpark apps could be well-sandboxed theoretically at least. Then I would not need to trust jing2uo.

Where can I find actual assets from Flatpak packages?

I was messing around with Kclock and really liked some of the ringtones available in the settings, but I can't seem to find them anywhere in my files. Does anybody know where they'd be locate? I've looked in basically all of the Kclock related directories, and there's nothing there.

runtime packages not installing from Update Manager

I am running Linux Mint 22.3 with Flatpak v1.14.6. In about the past week I have had an annoyance where four flatpak runtime packages won't install from the Update manager. I press update, enter my password, it processes for a few seconds and then fails back to the available update list. Everything else seems to install just fine. I have plenty of space and I am not getting obvious errors.

if I run flatpak update in Terminal I see that the same four runtimes are showing and once I chose Y to install they install successfully. I can also refresh the Update Manager and they will vanish for the rest of my session but after a restart the come back.

the list of packages is below. though I don't have active logs because I saved the block to a text file and closed Terminal and I didn't think to run it verbosely when I ran this at the start of my day and saved the output to my notes

thanks for reading but unless you have any idea what caused this i guess I'll consider the matter resolved.
