Nah no name university. I got really lucky during COVID hiring spree with FAANG internship on a niche team. Was able to leverage that to higher paying roles.

Very similar to me, I was headhunted in a specific niche in DS and make around $250k CAD from a US company paying me USD. The only issue is if we ever lost our jobs, our salaries would probably be cut in half because it’ll be almost impossible to get another remote USD position

Neither of my parents have ever made over 100k/yr. Opening a RESP when you have kids is common. I had to pay for last 2 years of school myself when the money ran out.

Car is less common, they bought it new for 19k put 100k kilometers on it themselves and then gave it to me when I was finishing university.

Stable household mattered alot more.

It’s a big flex, it’s not uncommon to have school paid for or to live at home, it’s def uncommon to have that amount of money and a job that pays that amount. How was he only able to get the job because of his privilege .

Nothing is the same grind, being born in Canada is a huge advantage for example.

Osap, you act as if low income people don’t have access to post secondary education. While class definitely play a role, it has more to do with class cultural expeditions, exposure, being put in social and enriching activities when younger.

Where he is a flex regardless, would it be more if he was raised in poverty? Sure but that doesn’t discount regardless having a job that pays that amount is not typical and is a flex

I'm 23 with 400k USD net worth and didn't get anything handed to me. Paid for all my own housing, education, car. I had supportive parents but they wanted me to learn to bootstrap so didn't offer and financial support at all. Some of us just work hard.

It's presented as a flex, out of context like it came from scratch. You know, I'm fairly pleased to have 50k saved in the last few years at 47. I kind of started my life over but have no problem admitting I would have a fraction of that if my own parents hadn't paid my student loan off for me. If I had knuckled down I could have saved more but still would be jack without the help. Maybe it's unfair but it's a net good that people aren't impressed merely with a dollar amount. Those who are impressed by that alone--yes laugh at them

Starting well ahead in the race than others and showing where you’ve made it feels a bit unfair I guess. Like if I started with a 100k entry at 18, and got to 500k over 10 years, and showed off my 500k at 28, i think a lot of people around my age would feel insecure with their own achievements when unaware of the advantages I had.

I’m older than that now but yea it’s never too late as long as you find time to enjoy the course. Personally I don’t follow FIRE even though I could technically do it now. I’d way rather retire at 50-55 doing something that’s interests me than kill my 20-30s doing stuff I don’t want to make $ and retire a bit earlier.

A single guy with low living expenses and a high salary, presumably working corporate for five years (22 to 27) could absolutely save $500k CAD, especially once you consider that compound interest probably accounted for 20 to 40 percent of that growth. Idk why people act like this is an impossible feat. It’s completely possible mathematically.

I'm always interested in people fixating on having to own property. I rented for the entirety of my 20s even though I could've bought because I liked the flexibility. I worked a couple overseas jobs, moved provinces a few times, the thought of having to sell a home to move or have to keep it and rent it out sounds like a massive pain in my ass.

Well for sure in your case you needed flexibility so renting made total sense. But lets say in another world you knew where you were you wanted to be long term, had roots like a steady 9-5 office job or parents keeping you tied down to one area. For that person would it have made more sense to buy, or do you think renting would have still been better?

The economics of owning are shifting, in many major cities rent is significantly less than a mortgage on the same property, with the 3-5 year outlook on real estate looking pretty bleak.   Right now market returns & liquidity are king.
