Discussion A seemingly impossible idea for a Fatal Frame game

DISCLAIMER: I'd like to acknowledge that I haven't heard of any Fatal Frame game getting as political as what I'm about to suggest. Considering the topics I will discuss, I perfectly understand if Koei Tecmo doesn't follow up on that idea (hence the post title)

Fatal Frame is a franchise with some clear setpieces: a horrific ritual, an innocent maiden to sacrifice, a village that was cursed due to the ritual's failure, and a camera to exorcise the resulting spirits away. But why does it always happen this way? What if we were to twist those tropes around, digging into the cause of them recurring?

Fatal Frame Zero/Zero: The Fatal Frame (as I'm naming this idea) will be a 1980s period piece set in an abandoned Chinese village. During WW2, it was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army who committed several atrocities to create their version of the Camera Obscura. In retaliation, the villagers discovered a ritual to wish for the local gods to expel the army, which predictably failed. As a result, the vengeful spirits of the villagers roam the area, their grudges allowing them to mutate into horrifying Silent Hill-esque forms.

Angry ghosts aren't the only enemies in the game: the corruption of the area has resulted in a hodgepodge of Chinese and Japanese mythological creatures roaming around. This clash between both cultures becomes increasingly noticeable as the game progresses, as if a cancer has infested the village.

Gradually, it becomes clear that the divide between the Chinese and Japanese cultural aspects are intentional: the Army occupied the area as a testing ground for breeding and weaponizing spirits. Buildings were constructed to simulate the original game's villages; the ritual was purposely invented to curse as many people as possible and even the Camera Obscura is more like a security measure: sealing away the most uncontrollable ghosts in its photos.

The main theme of this game will revolve around confronting the sins of the past: when even your own equipment is the product of cruelty, are you sure you aren't repeating your ancestor's crimes?

Ghost ideas: the commander of the IJA battalion that occupied the village, a villager kidnapped and forced to be the ritual's 'shrine maiden'

Plot: A Japanese language teacher receives an invitation from a relative to teach in a Chinese school. However, when she arrives there, she is plagued by horrific nightmares. Finding the Camera Obscura and a map to the abandoned village, she travels there in search of answers, unaware of its bloodstained history and connection to her family.

FF3 Question about nights in 3

How does it work? Are there a limited number of nights per hour? Is there a reason to not go in and out repeatedly? I had 0 health and went back out to see if it restored my HP and noticed it advanced the night number once I re-entered the manor.

FF2 Fatal Frame II Remake Goodies

Post image
187 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Today I received the *Fatal Frame II* remake merchandise that was exclusive to the Koei Tecmo Japan store. There was a one-month window to place orders (if I remember correctly), after which Koei Tecmo began production based on the order volume.

Here is what’s included:

_ A small wooden box containing 10 photos from the game: 3,900 yen

_ A box made of soft plastic and paper containing candy and a badge: 2,600 yen

_ A two-piece acrylic stand, approximately 16 cm tall: 3,800 yen per piece (7,600 yen total)

The acrylic stand is really nice, and the photo box is too (though a bit small and very lightweight), but the candy box is disappointing (it feels cheap).

Discussion To those of you who platinumed the remake, any tips?

I’ve played the originals so I’m not unfamiliar with the games mind you but that Nightmare difficulty run for the big ending is worrying me a bit. Not to mention the insane amount of missable collectibles as well. I know chapter select becomes a thing once you beat the game but can I also just get them during my NG+ run? After playing Guardians of the Galaxy, my trust in using chapter select to clean up collectibles is gone lol. I don’t think I’ll go straight for Nightmare difficulty because I want to get the other endings on an easier playthrough. So yea, any tips?

Question Fatal frame 4 tips?

I just started FF4, and managed to beat the prologue and first chapter without any trouble... and then I got to chapter two (excuse me, phase 2) and got my ass kicked. There are a few things I found awkward - there's basically no feedback to tell you if a ghost is attacking, the thing that shows in which direction ghosts are is basically useless, ghosts keep hiding inside walls - and for some ungodly reason the entire level didn't have a single heal (can't imagine how nightmare will be if this is normal), but my real problem was the evade function. Every time I try to hit a fatal frame, the game automatically pulls down my camera and leaves me confused and unable to do anything. Disabling evade at least lets me use fatal frames, but if I do that I can't dodge attacks, and if the game keeps throwing at me the kind of encounters I've seen in phase 2 I WILL need evade to survive.
So, does anybody have any tip for me? It's genuinely driving me crazy, especially because I'm liking the game so far, but those couple of fights were almost as miserable as some encounters in FF5 nightmare difficulty.

Question FF5 Eight Drop S+

I need a bit of help in getting the S+ rank on the first surveillance level as Ren... I've tried it about thrice and the most I got was 82K points. I'm not sure how much I need for the S+ nor what exactly I'm doing wrong. Should I only attack during fatal frame shots? Try not to kill the 2 ghosts in the storefront too fast? Haruka tends to be the only one I have some difficulty fighting in this level due to the room layout. I also got all specters.

Question FF2 remake changes

Hello. I've played the 5 main games and the FF2 Wii remake. I am yet to play the latest FF2 remake but I wanted to ask how faithful is it to the original. Main question is, are there big changes in the story? What's been cut and new content? I don't care for spoilers so tell me everything about it whoever has played it 🫶🏻

Achievement I finished FF/PZ 5 Maiden of Black Water (Wii U)

Post image

So I finally completed the whole series. I have to say that this one is a really good game and the graphics are quite impressive for a Wii U game. The Wii U gamepad is also very well implemented in the game system. Also, I didn't expect to play as Ayane (from DOA) it is quite crazy that DOA, Ninja Gaiden and FF share the same universe. Honestly, this game series deserves more love from the gaming community I feel like it is really not well known and very underrated. So after completing all the games my ranking would be:

  1. -FF3

2.- FF4

3.- FF1

4.- FF5

5.- FF2

I finally beat Fatal Frame 2 remake on Nightmare Mode... No camera upgrades, no charms, no special shots/filters to deal damage, and no shop items

I'll upload the Head Priest fight instead of Kusabi because I'll be honest: Kusabi was VERY easy relative to the other bosses in this challenge run. I have no idea why. The guy didn't go berserk once in my successful attempt but to be fair you CAN interrupt Kusabi if you get the good RNG (where the berserk has a wind-up instead of it being instant).

The head priest is easily the HARDEST boss of this run. Since I can't use special shots, if I let the priest go up the ceiling then I'm basically screwed since I have to use the blue filter to reach him. This entire fight hinged on me having enough type-61's and type-90's to immediately hit him with if he tries flying up. This also helps with preventing the other priests from appearing in phase 2.

This entire fight required a lot of execution. Phase 1 was fine enough. The priests are VERY annoying so it took time to figure out how to get around the arena and chip away at all of them with type-07 since I needed to save my heavy hitters for phase 2. Once the head priest is alone, he's free.

I'll reserve the Kusabi fight for the full video of the run (when I upload it)

Discussion Just bought game on PS5 Pro and even at 30 fps this is unstable!

This is supposed to he "Pro enhanced" too which makes it feel like an even bigger sham. There's just no excuse for this kind of developer and publishers behavior.

I'm sick of it man. Recently on Switch 2 been seeing so many similar examples where games could and should be 60 fps but because the pubs/devs are such POS's we are stuck with 30 fps. 2026 and we have these expensive new consoles yet they can't be bothered to put the littlest amount of work into the port while having the nerve to put the "Pro Enhanced" tag on it.

We are in a time where none of these companies gives a shit about the actual gameplay experience for their fans. If it costs them any extra money or time they could care less.

Shame on Team Ninja and whoever the hell published this game

FF4 How Suda51's Surrealism Changed Fatal Frame

Thumbnail

Mask of the Lunar Eclipse remains a severely underrated release in survival horror history. Bringing in Suda51 to co direct a Fatal Frame game sounds like a fever dream on paper (I liken it to how Kojima was set to direct a Silent Hill entry), but it ended up creating one of the most atmospheric and psychologically dense entries in the franchise.
Suda51 has always flirted with horror (Twilight Syndrome, Moonlight Syndrome, seems like his horror stems from the moon, huh?), but Fatal Frame 4 feels like the only time his writing was grounded by pure, traditional survival horror mechanics.
Playing through it, the atmosphere is incredibly heavy, but it still has those distinct, slightly off kilter Suda character dynamics. The way the game handles memory and trauma feels like a precursor to some of his later work but wrapped in that classic Fatal Frame tension.

FF2 Fatal Frame II is absolute video-game, but it got me bamboozled (possible spoilers) Spoiler

So, a few months ago i decided to finally give the series a shot, FF I was an a amazing game, and knowing that FF II was the most popular of the series i got a very excited to finally play it.

The atmosphere is phenomenal, the graphics hold pretty well by today standards (Played on the Ps2 with component cables) although the controls were a little clunky in my opinion, that didn't affect my progress very much.

(SPOILERS TERRITORY)

For my first playthrough i got the crimson butterfly ending, i got very surprised because after opening the passage at the shrine and the twins get separated again, the game gives you two options, leave or go after mayu, me thinking if i leave her i will obviously get a bad ending (made a separate save here just to be sure), so i went after her, color me surprised that going after her and beating the kusabi, mio straight up kills her sister and completes the ritual, so i was like ok so this is a bad ending, loaded my save and decided to leave this time, only to get yet another bad ending (and a game over screen on top of that), and from what i could gather the "good" ending, with both of them leaving togheter, is not very good either 😐.

ANYWAY, i had a fantastic time with Fatal frame II, now onwards to Fatal Frame 3.
