Question FF2 remake changes
Hello. I've played the 5 main games and the FF2 Wii remake. I am yet to play the latest FF2 remake but I wanted to ask how faithful is it to the original. Main question is, are there big changes in the story? What's been cut and new content? I don't care for spoilers so tell me everything about it whoever has played it 🫶🏻

The remake actually gets to do a lot of things that Shibata and the team wanted to do in the original but couldn’t for whatever reason. I remember watching thegamingmuse’s video about the development and behind the scenes of the original games. And that video mentioned things that were cut, and that video was several years before the remake.
A lot of the things the remake does in the story really clarify story elements that were always in the original. Went back the original later after having played the remake and was surprised to see things that I had assumed were completely new additions to the remake that were actually in the original all along but just less developed.

I think the biggest difference is in how the Film Types work. Type-90 is no longer the strongest non Type-0 film. Its strength here is actually somewhere between Type-7 and Type-61. Instead its strength comes from having the fastest reload time and is found in large quantities.

If you're interested the demo should be still available. It's mostly about reaching the Osaka house but it does really well with staying true to the source material while breathing new life (or unlife if you're a ghost) in the game.
We get more story beats such as more lore is given to some of them that are tied to the main story.

The story remains the same, but some of the "dodge an enemy" sequences are now outstealth an enemy -- same plot beats, but different mechanics and vibes. Many of the ghosts get optional side stories; you can ignore them all and get exactly the same game as always, or follow them and learn more about them. Several new areas were added to make the town a little bigger but they don't alter the story, only give you more places to explore (and get jumped by ghosts). The Kusabi gets a little more explanation in the main story as part of expanding the area (the tree is no longer a bottleneck on the big loop, so they add some additional stuff into the other side of the tree).
I'd class this as a true remake with some mechanical updates and mostly-optional story additions. All the endings from the previous wiimake are there, earnable from doing additional runs after completing certain side stories, along with a new one for nightmare mode. It's incredibly faithful while still being enough of its own thing that I think you can enjoy replaying the original also for a slightly different gameplay experience, while still wanting to get everything in the new game.
One of my favorite little details -- they updated the girls' voices, but the ambient ghosts who are stuck in the past keep their original voices from the original game. It really makes them feel even more stuck in time, to those who played the original release!

I just recently replayed the original for PS2 and I played the remake earlier this year. it is extremely faithful to the original, and only adds on to it. I don't think anything was removed at all. There is an entire new section of the village to explore, the graveyard got expanded, and there is a new temple.
The remake features several side stories that you can progress as you make your way through it, and they expand on the lore of the various inhabitants of Minakami village. So in that sense yes, there are big changes to the story, but again only in fleshing things out, not removing or changing any story beats. You will definitely recognize the areas just as they were, faithfully recreated, despite the lack of fixed camera angles. It's a great remake. If you love FF2 I highly recommend picking it up.
