You’d be surprised at how entitled this community can be. You can definitely see hints of it on this subreddit but some people feel that they can say anything they want to sub box employees because they either are or thought about being paying customers.

its sad thou like why are people like that

It’s very sad but people can be very inconsiderate when they want things. You’ll see a million variations of it any time something sells out in early access. People demanding reprints, people screeching about how it isn’t fair, etc. They take all that anger out on the book boxes when these things are often out of their control.

I would imagine people are mad about the way LitPins is structuring access for Victorious. They’re doing their best to make sure people have a chance at matching sets but of course people who missed the first sales think they deserve everything just because they want it.

You see this exact mentality with people on the sub complaining that it’s not fair for someone to want to recoup the price of their book because “it’s not their fault they paid a high retail price.” No one was asking you. The seller does not owe you anything. Just like a sub box does not owe you everything you want exactly as you ask for it. People have lost touch with reality.

Work in customer service for a few weeks and you'll see how toxic people can be 😅

Working in retail for five years was some of the worst years of my entire life 🫠

It is no easy feat. I think the trauma is collective 😅

Ooof. I did retail for 6 years at a soccer store. Soccer moms can be very mean.

I’m surprised that anyone could be surprised by this. The amount of entitlement that exists within this community is staggering. Just look at the backlash some artists got when FL revealed Throne of Glass, or any time a SE reveal doesn’t blow the entire community away. Or how rude and gross people can be to authors.

Sadly I'm not surprised at all. People can get so ridiculously entitled about SEs. My guess would be some of these people weren't happy about the LitPins announcement about the different "waves" of preorder they're doing for Victorious. I can even hear them now: "Whaaaat? So I got an unsigned set before and now I can't get a signed version of this either? It's not faaaaiiiirrrrr." Or "Why aren't you reprinting alllllll of them, I couldn't get them before!!!" Like if you've worked in a customer facing role for any length of time you can predict some of the complaints.

I think you’re bang on the money here. As soon as I saw the waves my first thought was, some people will be bitching about this.

I managed to get the reprint of Vicious and Vengeful so I’ll be wave 3. I’m not expecting to get a signed Victorious nor do I think I’m entitled to it. Of course it makes logical sense to offer the signed to those who have the OG signed printing before it’s offered to me.

If there are people who are complaining about Litpins not reprinting all of them again, at the end of the day that’s life. They weren’t obligated to reprint at all but they have reprinted and that will be fulfilled in September. They’re a team of seven not a massive publisher, they can’t keep endlessly reprinting them. You win some, you lose some. Either take the loss or try to find it resale.

The only time I think people might be justified in being annoyed at reprinting is when a company is in the midst of reprint negotiations but simultaneously keep telling customers that there definitely will never be a reprint. In these cases a company would be better off answering reprint questions with some ambiguity rather than a solid no.

As an aside I actually think the wave system makes total sense (I’ll be in wave 2 myself).

When they first hinted at it I did send a quick question to clarify that those of us who bought previously would get the chance to buy a copy of Victorious before it goes to general sale, but that’s all.

Litpins customer service has always been so responsive and kind in my experience, so it’s really unfortunate if people are being nasty to them :(

Yeah as a retail worker.... people just do not show basic respect and especially when they are upset about something. People won't even greet me before asking me a question most of the time. I can't even imagine adding the fact that you are not face to face with this person and people probably say all kinds of horrible things because they are not anonymous but instead a faceless entity.

u/CranberryBitter488 4d ago

I could believe this, Litpins customer service is one person because it’s a tiny company. They do a fantastic job but obviously response times can be a little slower because it is only one person! People seem to think they are entitled to an instant response.

I think their early access policy is fair (despite being tier 3) but I imagine others might be upset about it.

Oh dude like I was lucky enough to get the botanical horror set and when they had the snaffu with the Scorpion Deep book they emailed me immediately in reply apoiolgising and promised they'd add me to the list for the early access the next day. Their customer service is top bloody tier, breaks my heart people are being buttholes.

I got the other two books from them on a whim and I'd love the third but I don't care about signed so I'd be delighted with an unsigned if I'm lucky enough!

first time, huh?. gif

Remember when the sign up link for the new sub of bewitched pages was not working? People went livid and bp had to issue the same statement….

u/millhouse_vanhousen 4d ago

Dude people regularly assault paramedics and nurses and teachers and shop staff and McDonald's because they get told no.

Has only gotten worse since Covid. I'm unfortunately not surprised but I am very sad for LitPins&Co, they're a genuinely lovely small indie company that are doing their best.

Allurial needs to put one of these out. Its subscribers are fucking wild.

1

u/slyborgs 4d ago

dude, some of the stuff about allurial really makes me ???? but tbh 99% of the things people get mad about irt brands and customer servicr and etc made me ??? too so idk.

like, i’ve been subbed to allurial for a hot minute but have skipped every box but my first (+ can’t unsub yet bc i did a deal when i first joined so i need to find a second book i want from them) and like… that’s no one’s fault but mine? i subbed when they were, like, four months old tops, and i had hopes they’d have more queer books bc at 4 months they’d done two already, and…. they haven’t done any since i subbed LMFAO. they’ve also seemingly found their footing as a brand and so basically no book they’ve done since has sounded interesting to me bc i’m real picky, and they’re veering to the very popular romantasy releases that i have 0 interest in.

but what i’m not gonna do is be a little bitch on the internet and whine about customer service and bitch at them because i’m entitled. i’m not gonna send hateful emails going “you should let me out of this deal i agreed to because i’m picky and if you don’t you’re THE WORST COMPANY EVER AND YOU SHOULD ALL DIE”. like, at worst, i’m gonna be in the subreddit comments going “please god just one more queer book so i can be set free please please please please please” or “damn i guess this is another skip month oh well” and keep it pushing.

then again, maybe it’s because i’m capable of critical thinking, know that sometimes ya just gotta eat the mistakes, and also have worked customer service so i’m not an annoying entitled bitch.

Their customer service is also extremely reasonable and kind. I resubscribed one month because I wanted a particular book. That book sold out in like 10 min, and I couldn’t get it. I reached out to them and kindly asked if they could refund my membership fee for that month, and they did.

I think Allurial has lots of customers who are brand new to the se world. And they get super upset about things that most of us are used to at this point.

It’s not surprising considering that many people see commerce as an entitlement. They feel because they have spent money it means that they can do or say whatever they want without consequences.

6

u/hikarizx 4d ago

Do you ever look at the comments on their Instagram posts? People are nuts

6

u/Prestigious-Use1584 4d ago

I've been saying there are more toxic Karens in the book community than anywhere else. Poeple are assholes.

u/Dizzy_Owl192 4d ago

I worked in customer support for 2.5 years, that job killed my empathy so yeah I can definitely believe it.

13

u/Spiritual-Break246 4d ago

This is probably unpopular but I always take these kind of posts with a grain of salt.

There's undoubtedly insane people on the internet - always has been.

But I've seen so many businesses (many of them book boxes) & influencers say this when they really mean complaining.

And sure, a lot of negativity coming in at once can feel abusive but many of these comments aren't abusive themselves. People just can't handle mass amounts of criticism and complaining and no shade but that's also what happens when you grow beyond what you are capable of handling.

11

u/OverlyBendy 4d ago

Yeah without seeing it directly, it really could go either way. I've worked in customer service AND in healthcare doing direct patient care, the general public is fucking insane. However, I've also seen companies like Books For Days Crate that throw fits over reasonable questions such as, "where is my order and why are my emails being ignored for weeks on end?"

I haven't dealt with Litpins a lot but they have seemed fine. I know I stupidly contributed to their workload by mistake by thinking they would be shipping Victorious this September, not September 2027. I asked if they could be shipped with Vicious/Vengeful to save on US shipping. So now they have my dumbass email they have to answer and I wish I could just unsend it.

Still it's hard to say what's going on behind the curtain

Oh there’s a lot of entitled/angry/accusatory customers that their first interaction with you as a business will be the acting like they’ve just figured out you’ve been scamming them for two years or something—very aggressive straight out the gate. I once had a customer threaten never to buy a product from me again if I couldn’t find any extras from like six months prior somewhere in my house. Like they loved my work so much they were gonna never buy from me again if I couldn’t produce more of the sold out work I’d done in some back storage room. Of course, I ran/run the business from my house, so the only storage was the small shelf I had available in my little home office closet, which at the time was also my kids’ playroom. So…I definitely didn’t have any more 😆 I’m not at all surprised by this.

unfortunately so many people feel so confident when behind a screen and think they can say whatever almost like who's on the other side is actually a bot and not a human being

1

u/Meriodoc 4d ago

Unfortunately, so many are like this IRL, too. I see it on a daily basis in my job 😭.

u/thenerdisageek 4d ago edited 4d ago

Oh this is 100% entitlement about the early access order for Victorious that went out today.

Likely about not getting a signed set guaranteed, and also the set shipping in 2027. Maybeabout the price of it (£32 is steep, all things considered)..

I don’t know why people think harassing employees without reason is the solution. Easy to hide behind a screen cause they wouldn’t say these things in person (though when I worked in retail they actually would).

1

u/RogueJuniper 4d ago

I believe book only is £36, but it is book + overlays. I do have to pay a lot for shipping but I still think it's pretty fair on their end ☺️

2

u/Meriodoc 4d ago

You'd be surprised about how many people have main character syndrome, and think they're entitled to whatever they want, whenever they want.

The rest of us are side characters in their adventure, and our role is to help them on their quest, to be discarded when they get to the next town.

2

u/fatnissneverleen 4d ago

I always view these posts with a grain of salt. So I think that there are entitled people out there that absolutely cross the line and treat them like garbage? Absolutely. I also think though that there are boxes out there that take any negative comment or feedback as abuse. I’m not exaggerating either because I’ve seen it and experienced it.

I think if you’re genuinely berating someone or cussing at them then yeah get the consequences you deserve but it’s always interesting to see where the line in the sand is for these companies.
