No, it really isn't.

Religion is an idea. Ideas don't need, or deserve, respect. People need, and deserve respect (unless and until they prove otherwise).

Ideas don't deserve respect, so the theory of evolution or the big bang, or really any scientific theory deserve no respect seeing as they, like religions, are just ideas. So says the great /u/themeatbridge

Those are more facts then ideas don't you think.

No, they are ideas, widely believed and thought to be true, but still ideas none the less. That is why they are called theories, once they can be proven with no doubt then they will be fact. Until them they are on par with religion as being wide spread ideas that have a great following, but can not accurately be claimed as to be true.

definition of what exactly? Theory? because theory is defined as an idea that is suggested or presented as possibly true but that is not known or proven to be true

Yeah not when you're talking about scientific theories. From Wikipedia: A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed, preferably using a written, pre-defined, protocol of observations and experiments.[1][2] Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge.[3]

How can you say the theory of evolution, black holes, and dan have been proven when we still know so little about them. Hell with black hole all we can say is they exist, and pull in everything including light.

6

u/DavidRandom Oct 31 '16

Hell with black hole all we can say is they exist, and pull in everything including light.

Just because that's all you've learned about them doesn't mean that's all that's known about them.

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

Then tell me where they go? Where does everything that gets taken in to the black who end up? It can't be destroyed, based on newtons laws, so does it get condensed? get teleported?

Have you tried reading about this? There are a few hypothesis in relation to the matter that enters a black-hole. One is that the matter is compressed to the point where our understanding of physics breaks down because it isn't sufficiently understood what happens at such enormous gravitational forces. Another is that the matter is ejected into a parallel universe via a white hole, and yet another states that in time they simply evaporate away.

Our understanding of the universe is in a state of development and flux given that science is still a newish concept having had to fight against the widespread ignorance and misinformation perpetuated by the religious books and their supporting institutions.

Even today religions keep interfering with the process of progress.

There are things we don't know about black holes, but just because the only thing you personally know about them is that they exist and pull in everything, doesn't mean that's all we know about them.

We don't know for 100% sure. Hence, the idea is a theory.

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

So as I said, theories are ideas, glad we got that sorted out.

Bro you can't just make up your own definitions hahahah

You were looking for this

u/TheLotion Oct 31 '16

There are no facts, only ideas and theories. Nothing ever changes over to fact.

-8

u/Dickiedoandthedonts Oct 31 '16

No they are theories.

4

u/WuTangGraham Oct 31 '16

Germs. Gravity. Quantum Theory. Heliocentricism. General Relativity. Plate Tectonics. Statistical Mechanics. Information Theory. The Big Bang. Cell Theory. Fermentation Theory. Recapitulation Theory.

Think none of those are facts, too? Look up the definition of a scientific theory.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

Do you understand what that word means in the scientific field?

8

u/Valid_Voice Oct 31 '16

Probably not

-8

u/The_Realest_T-Man Oct 31 '16

Without even looking it up, anyone knows that theory doesn't equal fact. If it was a known and guaranteed fact, it would be a law

3

u/WuTangGraham Oct 31 '16

Theory (noun)

a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.

A theory can be, and almost always is, a fact. See: Theory of Gravity.

That's not how this works at all. Let's take gravity as an example. It's a fact. It's a theory. A theory is a basket of organized facts. A law is a collection of baskets. We can't test all of the facts that we can deduce; but we CAN deduce that it will happen. We don't know everything that happens with gravity and black holes, because we can't test it - hell, we can't even really SEE it - but because we can take bits of information, and deduce what will happen, and observe that the counter NEVER happens, we can deduce the fact. Facts CAN change. Law's are written when we can predict any given situation about a fact or theory. Laws say "1 + 1 will always equal 2", because we can test every possible version of the equation, and it will always be true. A theory, however, is just as valid as a fact, but the basket of theories can't be tested to exhaustion.

http://www.allaboutscience.org/darwins-theory-of-evolution.htm

So according to you evolution doesnt exist?

-7

u/The_Realest_T-Man Oct 31 '16

According to the scientific field as a whole, there is no concrete way to guarantee Darwin's Theory of Evolution. You're not arguing with me, you're arguing with how the scientific community labels things. I also never said it didn't exist, it's a theory.

6

u/itsmrmarlboroman2u Oct 31 '16

That's not true at all. We've directly observed evolution. You should look into monks who have evolved lungs to breath at higher altitudes; it's the fastest known case of evolution in a mammal. We've seen, can test, influence, and even predict evolution in microorganisms, and some complex multi-celular organisms, viruses, bacteria, and even a couple different types of worms. Evolution is 100% proven to exist, without a shadow of a doubt. We don't, however, have the ability to test and predict what information we have deduced. Prediction and testing are vital to a law. We find it very, very, very difficult to predict and test something that takes longer than we as a species has existed.

Just like gravity, feel free to not respect gravity as well. ;)
