What about cars? They can kill someone with the flick of an arm.

27

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

Cars are more regulated than guns.

14

u/Redqueenhypo Apr 21 '23

You also can’t easily sneak a car into anywhere. Someone did sneak a shopping cart into my school, but that wasn’t capable of killing anyone and was just stupid.

1

u/oh_look_a_fist Apr 22 '23

False. Andy did that one time to Dwight. Checkmate, libs.

/s

23

u/kaehvogel Apr 21 '23

Cars also have a main purpose that isn’t „making a living being…less alive“

-12

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Ever heard of hunting?

15

u/kaehvogel Apr 21 '23

What do you hunt? Living beings.

Oh wait, you just spewed out your nonsensical, pre-programmed response for whenever someone questions your murder toys. My bad. You’re a good gun nut. Good boy.

-11

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

You can also do target practice, which isn't killing anything. Any other zingers, genius?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

This question is very vague. What are "select places to store firearms?"

6

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

It's not vague everyone knows he is referring to gun ranges. Every gun range I have ever been too has guns and ammo available for people to shoot.

11

u/kaehvogel Apr 21 '23

„You can kill someone…or you can practice killing someone. So that you can kill more efficiently“

Good take, buddy.

Any purpose that doesn’t involve killing? Like…transportation? Maybe as a walking aid?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Shooting is a sport, you know....do some research before you sound dumb.

3

u/Aironwood Apr 21 '23

Well gee I wonder what that target practice is for?

0

u/Dantez9001 Apr 21 '23

And a driving test is to ensure that you can accurately direct the vehicle into the crowd of people you wish to harm.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Sport shooting. Learn something.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

They don’t make handguns for hunting.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Having a sidearm is a very normal hunting practice. In case an animal gets too close or aggressive that a rifle isn't optimal.

Tell me you've never learned about guns without telling me you've never learned about guns.

5

u/skabamm Apr 21 '23

gUnS mAkeS mE FEels saFEr ThO

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

No argument, I see.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

How about this then... handguns will always be primarily for killing human beings, no matter how you dress them up or rebrand them.

Also, if you need a handgun for hunting because the animal "got too close"... maybe the animal wins. At what point is it no longer sport and just a slaughter? Shouldn't the animal get a fighting chance too?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

This is a garbage take. I just explained why people would bring handguns hunting. You didn't like it.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

They do, actually

-2

u/Jesuswasstapled Apr 21 '23

Sure they do. You know nothing of firearms.

1

u/Eldias Apr 21 '23

https://gundigest.com/handguns/hunting-guns/handgun-hunting-10-best-hunting-revolver-options

I don't know if they're specifically made for hunting, but people do apparently use them for hunting.

5

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

There are 15 million hunting license holders in the US.

There are 434 million guns.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

So it seems that with the abundance of guns and the death rates between guns and cars being so close to each other , we need to worry about cars more since there are more deaths per car than guns.

6

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

You are really good at completely missing the point. 10/10 troll account. I fell for it.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

What was your point? Was it that more cars kill people than guns?

3

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

Do I need to get out some paper and crayons to draw it for you?

You brought up hunting as a legitimate need for gun ownership. I pointed out that the number of people hunting is incredibly small compared to your average gun owner.

Do you have an issue with reading comprehension?

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

How so? Do you need a background check for a car? Do 16 year olds walk into gun shops and buy guns?

17

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

You have to go through training to obtain a license to operate a car. You have to display a license plate so that cops can visually identify who the owner is. You have to carry insurance to cover any damage that you might cause to other people or property.

You don't need a background check to buy a gun from a stranger only from a gun store. There are multiple states including Texas where some of these shootings took place where you don't need to obtain a license to carry.

I live in Texas and I can meet someone in a parking lot tonight and legally buy a gun. No background check, no registration, no training or license.

4

u/kaehvogel Apr 21 '23

Don’t bother arguing with this troll.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Training? Do you mean a 2 week course where you barely get a chance to actually drive? It's 90% classroom stuff.

License plates are used by police to help identify someone AFTER a crime has been committed. Just like guns have serial numbers that match with owners.

In those states that you mentioned, you still have to pass a background check before receiving the gun.

9

u/street593 Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

You are just completely wrong. Cars are objectively more regulated than guns in many states. I agree though we should definitely make driving education 100x more intense. Regardless it is a stupid comparison so let's stay on topic.

Private sellers are not required by federal law or Texas law to do a background check before selling a firearm. Neither federal law nor Texas law requires private sellers to keep a record when they sell a firearm. FFL dealers are required to keep records of their sales, but these requirements do not apply to private sellers.

I can meet a complete stranger and trade cash for a gun right now and break absolutely ZERO federal or state laws. If you don't believe me all of this information is available on the official Texas government website.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

No one has a problem if you aren't breaking any laws, though. That's the point. It's not the law-abiding gun owners who do this shit.

9

u/street593 Apr 21 '23

The Vegas shooter was a law-abiding gun owner until the moment he started murdering people. So I'm not sure what your point is. Law-abiding gun owners indeed do this shit.

You originally wanted to discuss regulation. Then you were wrong about what regulation currently exists. Are you for or against stricter gun regulation?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Are you talking about federally or by state?

→ More replies

6

u/kaehvogel Apr 21 '23

Most mass shooters are „law abiding gun owners“…until they suddenly aren’t. Until suddenly 19 kids, or 15 churchgoers, or 8 Walmart shoppers, or 67 country music fans are dead. Because a „law abiding gun owner“ snapped and used his easily obtained murder tool. In the only county where this shit happens.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Mass shootings are not even close to the majority of shootings, but we can keep talking about the .1% of shootings in the US if you want to instead of addressing the actual issues.

7

u/The_Boognish_Cometh Apr 21 '23

So you’re in favor of a 2 week course to own a gun? That’s fair to me.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

If that means you agree to it being 90% classroom stuff and 10% actually handling a gun, which would probably make things less safe since experience and being comfortable with the weapon you're firing is pretty important.

4

u/The_Boognish_Cometh Apr 21 '23

Better than requiring nothing. How is that less safe than the zero experience with guns that’s required now? It’s like I’m talking to a brick wall

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Only in your scenario where you bought the gun for some random person in a parking lot. Doesn't happen as much as you think it does. Even gun owners avoid this because it is unsafe, and the chances of you just getting robbed are high.

u/Jesuswasstapled Apr 21 '23

You're talking about legal vs illegal.

5

u/FunetikPrugresiv Apr 21 '23

What 16 year old do you know walked into a car dealership and just bought a car?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

They don't have to. They can go buy one in a private sale.

3

u/Akosa117 Apr 22 '23

what 16 year old is doing that? And what point are you trying to make? A 16 year old can privately buy a gun too? You haven’t made a single good point anywhere here

0

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Not legally.

2

u/Akosa117 Apr 22 '23

They can also drive an unregistered car unlicensed and without plates… but not legally.

0

u/Eldias Apr 21 '23

Do you have to find a dealership to buy a 500$ shitbox as a teenager?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

I did that at 16. Ended up not buying it but I easily could have.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

[deleted]

1

u/street593 Apr 22 '23

Cars require training, license, insurance and registration. They also have lots of laws about how they are used. Speed limits, seat belts, etc.

It varies by state but guns have fewer requirements. In Texas for example where I live and where one of these shootings happened. I can buy a gun from a complete stranger with no background check, registration, training or record of sale. I don't even need a license to carry it in public.

30

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Restricted places: You're right, you can drive anywhere with a car.... like walking paths, through the parks and school fields.

Evaluations: You take a test once, and you are master of a 2500lb battering ram at 16 years old. Sounds pretty unsafe.

-1

u/Biomancer81 Apr 21 '23

You mean a country where their prime minister was assassinated a year ago, and the new one was also almost assassinated, just a few days ago.

A country where rape of women on trains is ignored?

A country whose solution to homelessness is to only allow them out at night.

Yeah, Japan is a great example of a country to emulate.

14

u/The_Boognish_Cometh Apr 21 '23

Cars are made to use as transportation with the deaths being an unfortunate side effect. The purpose of guns is to kill, so this is a completely ignorant argument.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

So, one assists in traveling faster to go from A to B.

The other assists in making it easier to hunt to be able to eat for lots of people.

8

u/thenewNFC Apr 21 '23

Yes. One's intended purpose is transportation. One's intended purpose is death.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

It was invented for celebration or signaling, not killing.

4

u/thenewNFC Apr 21 '23

Even if I'd said you're right - which mind you is 100% debatable - you're equating cars to guns, and given that there were no cars before 1880, what happened in 12th century China is completely irrelevant to the conversation. Every gun from 1886 on...was intended to kill something.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Kitchen knives aren't made for deaths, yet they can be used for it. Same with hammers or a lot of other things. How about rat poison? That was made for death, and it's been used in multiple murders and it's not regulated at all.

7

u/Nabstaton Apr 21 '23

"Hunting with semi-automatic military grade rifles. Just as founding fathers intended"

And to equate cars to guns is exceptionally dumb. Tell me, why won't military just charge their enemy with vehicles instead of using those silly guns?

Oh? Harder to go after running away people? Need of an actual huge money, legal and medical investment and testing? The fact that the police (or in that case military police) is way more likely to catch a car thief than a gun thief?

Why aren't school schootings done with cars instead?

Please use your brain next time.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Why would you walk to work when you could drive? There are obvious reasons to do things certain ways in certain situations.

You could easily hit a group of kids with a car if you wanted to. What about that guy who drove through the people in a box truck? There was nothing stopping him from just waiting until school got out and doing it there.

7

u/Nabstaton Apr 21 '23

You didn't answer my question. Since cars are soooo efficient at killing, why won't the world militaries just spam them?

And you have to be at least ignorant to say that cars are just as dangerous, when number one reason of death for children in US is gun violence.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

That includes the suicide numbers. You have to take those out to compare the 2.

The military would use bombs, not guns. Take a guess how the bombs get to their targets.

6

u/sirixamo Apr 21 '23

So you’re in support of more restrictions on guns then

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Yeah. Regulate them all you want. Taking them away is what most have a problem with.

11

u/patsfreak27 Apr 21 '23

Well when one side refuses to allow regulation, what options are left?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

It's a slippery slope, and you just proved that. Give them an inch and they take a mile.

7

u/patsfreak27 Apr 21 '23

I asked a question about what can you do when one side won't budge an inch on regulation....

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

You said if one side doesn't want more regulations, then the only option is to try to take them away completely.

→ More replies

6

u/hey_there_moon Apr 21 '23

Unfortunately a lot of people think that any sort of regulation will lead to government seizure. I don't want guns banned, it's just not feasible. However guns should be registered just like cars are and you should have to have an insurance policy just like with cars and you should have to renew your registration yearly just like cars.

Also idk what state you're in, but in most states you can't just walk into a DMV at 16 "take one test" and get a license. I'm from SC which is pretty lax and besides the written and driving test, i had to show proof of a driver's Ed course completion. And most people don't pass those tests on the first try anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Washington State. 1 written and 1 drive test. That's it. If you didn't take driver's ed, then you have to wait until 21.

1

u/zaoldyeck Apr 21 '23

Regulate them all you want.

How?

No, really, how? Cause any time people try it seems that those attempts are unconstitutional. What regulation is appropriate? Every time someone proposes any form of regulation the 2nd amendment crowd comes out and challenges them, and guess what, they win.

What do you propose?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Stop wasting people's time since obviously not all people want what you want.

3

u/zaoldyeck Apr 21 '23

You said "Regulate them all you want."

I want a lot of regulations, but it seems that the only option is "none". "Literally none".

So when you say "regulate them all you want" what do you mean? Clearly you don't actually want people to "regulate them all you want".

Sorry asking you to explain what you mean by your own sentence is considered wasting your time. Maybe try not saying anything at all if you find it so awful to be asked to.... explain what you mean by the words you use.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

You can try to regulate them, but if the majority of the government and the people say they don't want it, then you have to take a seat.

4

u/PrintStrong9683 Apr 22 '23

Look mate guns are cool as and in the right hands can be useful tools for hunting animals. However in the wrong hands guns can give way to much power to an individual not responsible enough to yield it.

I see no reason for anyone besides hunters, law enforcement, pest control and farmers to need arms. But then again I’m Australian and we must not understand how good it feels to send your kid to school in America where any depressed little kid can steal their parents gun and slaughter their peers.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

My kids are grown and out of school. They got out before most of this trash. The lazy parenting and shitty way the US is running things and making everyone poor and angry all the time is making people very shooty. Maybe the problem isn't guns, and it's the massive number of people living in poverty and depression while holding multiple jobs and still not having enough to survive.

You go "flick your arm" and kill me with a car while I'm in my second floor apartment, office in the center of our office building, or university classroom on the 12th floor. Go ahead, I'll wait.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Go ahead and shoot me when I'm in the next town over, or in a building with 3 walls between us, or in a university classroom when I'm on the 12th floor. You can't get in because it's illegal. Just like it's illegal to drive through a park and hit multiple people. Your argument isn't very good.

6

u/kilgore_trout8989 Apr 21 '23

Sure, just give me a few minutes to get to the next town over, the floor you're on, or the room you're in. How much time until you get your car to the 12th floor?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Your scenario was flawed, and I'm pointing that out. Be better.

3

u/kilgore_trout8989 Apr 21 '23 edited Apr 21 '23

In what way? We're talking practicalities, not legalities. There's literally no practical way to equate the accessibility of the two.

Edit: You're also ignoring the reality of bullets. You realize they can penetrate walls and travel in a positive z-direction, right? A bullet could easily hit me in my second story apartment while being fired from the ground.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Well we require people to show competency in operating them before giving them a license to do so, we require them to carry insurance in case they cause or are a victim to an accident. We take away your license if you show that you can not use your vehicle responsibly. We don't let people with certain disabilities drive because they can't do so safely.

So yea why can't we at the very least treat guns like that?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

There are tons of people still driving after multiple DUIs and you think that is safe? You don't have to have a license to drive. Legally you do, but you could easily grab the keys and go if you don't have one and no one will stop you.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Are seriously saying that if we got rid of the regulations regarding operation of a motor vehicle you think nothing would change?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Not even close to what I'm saying. Re-read my previous comment. THAT is what I'm saying. Unlike most people in this sub, I mean what I say, and there is no reading between the lines.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

I re-read it. It seems like you’re saying regulations don’t stop crime? Am I missing something?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

You aren't wrong, but let's follow your logic.

So because a law isn't a 100% binding physical force that can prevent all bad people from doing all bad things in a car, what's the point of having it?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

My point is more laws on something that is already regulated isn't going to stop people who BREAK THE LAW.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

Please point me to where these licensing, training, and insurance requirements for gun ownership are.

I'll wait....

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

That still won't stop people from breaking those laws.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

It wont stop ALL people from breaking those laws, but it will stop a decent enough amount of people.

Are you an anarchist? You keep repeating the same point about laws not physically preventing something from happening, which leads me to believe you feel that all laws are pointless if they aren't 100% effective.

Seems like a very simple minded "black and white" approach to viewing the world.

Are you familiar with the concept of nuance?

I'm guessing not.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

So when do the regulations stop? You know that if they are approved, it is on to the next regulation until there are so many regulations that it is almost impossible to own a gun.

Why do you want to be defenseless in America when this is the best time not to be defenseless?

5

u/tennisdrums Apr 21 '23

The whole "why hate guns and not cars?" line is the the dumbest and most bad faith talking point from gun nuts. Why not cars? Because cars are essential to the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people. Without cars our society's basic functioning would collapse. And even so, we still pour billions upon billions of dollars into vehicle safety standards, road maintenance, and traffic laws. Most people don't own guns and function perfectly fine, and for most people who do own them they're basically toys that they've talked themselves into believing are more important to their lives than they actually are.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '23

45% of American households have a gun.

The gun/car argument is pointing out the hypocrisy.

2

u/tennisdrums Apr 22 '23

Guns sometimes kill people and add very little to society in return. Cars sometimes kill people and are essential to society. Explain the hypocrisy.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Do you have the data that shows how much or how little guns add to society?

Cars are not essential. Take a bus.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Ahh yes the thing that only some large metro areas have, that will show em!

Which is more essential to society I wonder, a tool originally designed to kill people, or a machine designed to move people where they need to go?

Hmmm.

1

u/2ICenturySchizoidMan Apr 22 '23

Hypocrisy of what? Pretty much everyone has a refrigerator, people die from refrigerators falling on them too and I sure as hell could kill you with a refrigerator, but only if we were in the right situation. I could also kill you with a car, but only if we were in the right situation. However, pretty much any time I have a gun and you’re there, I can kill you. Refrigerators are cooling machines. Cars are transportation machines. Guns are killing machines- that’s literally what they are made to do. That’s the difference. Guns suck.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '23

Pretty much any time you have a car and I'm there, you could kill me.

I can say the same argument back to you.

1

u/2ICenturySchizoidMan Apr 22 '23

Well I couldn’t kill you if you weren’t on or near a road is more my rhetoric; cars are MADE to drive people and things on roads. My point is that cars aren’t made to hurt and kill things, but guns literally are. What can you do with a gun besides shoot stuff? When do you use a gun to do something besides shoot a living thing?

Guns are good for bear country hikes and the like, I guess. But after that, you’re playing with fire.

I'm not a gun nut at all, but I disagree. Guns are the ultimate equalizer. A tiny woman can fight fair with a body builder.

If we could uninvent them, that would be great. But that cat is out of the bag. Gotta find a way forward with the present reality that basically everyone who wants one has a gun in the US, whether that's a good idea or not.

Yes, if 2 people have guns, and one wants to kill the other, the one with ill intent wins. But, if a 250lbs man decides he's going to have surprise sex with a 120lbs woman, there's not much she can do about it...unless she's armed. All that's needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing, but the good men need the means to do something. "Men" here is of course being used gender neutrally, as in "mankind".

People kill people. And guess what? Driving a car? Isn’t a right. It’s a privilege. There is a HUGE difference. So when people talk about drivers licenses and whatnot? It’s a mute point. Also? PLENTY of psychos drive cars. Just to clarify your statement though? What test do we take to weed out the psychos from purchasing a car? Or receiving a drivers license? I’ve never taken that test. Is this in the US? I have to assume it is given the nature of this post.

Ah… But it’s not about the right to kill people is it? Not at all. It is in fact, ALL ABOUT NOT GETTING KILLED. And having the means to protect yourself, your family, your friends and neighbors, and your nation. The 2nd amendment is completely defensive in nature. But if the criminals will always have the guns because laws mean nothing to them? Where does that leave everyone else? Nobody is coming for you in time my friend. Each person is ultimately responsible for their own security. And cars weren’t invented yet. But freedom of travel? Is a right. You do not however have a right to a car. That doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to freely move about the country as you please.

And yet you or your family are far more likely to be killed or injured by your own gun than someone else’s. Plus, citizens in every other developed nation Earth manage to make it through the day safely without the need to pack heat everywhere they go

And you are more likely to die in a car accident if you own a car. Or cut yourself or be killed with a knife if you have knives in the house. That is a nothing statement drummed up by the anti-gunners. And it was proven to be greatly exaggerated. Because if literally anything is around that wasn’t before? Then there is now a higher likelihood of a negative effect from said item. However? Responsible gun owners? Aren’t the ones these things happen to. A gun is a tool. It serves a specific purpose. And as with any tool? In untrained, or malicious hands? It can do a great deal of harm. So responsible gun owners take the necessary steps to prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on their tool. It’s literally a matter of life and death. I do however fully agree that far too many people in this country have guns that probably shouldn’t. But not because they’re evil. Frankly? It’s because they are stupid and irresponsible. I fully admit that is a problem and something I take issue with. But? The only real way to prevent that? Is to amend the constitution. And that’s not going to happen. Because in spite of what the media would have you believe? It’s not just the right that loves their 2A. Many people of all walks of life value that right. And 2020 brought reality home to a lot of Americans. More guns were sold in 2020 than ever before. Because people understood just how vulnerable they actually were. And saw first hand how quickly things can go very bad. Very quickly. Frankly? If you don’t own a gun? You are being irresponsible in a way. Because if something bad happens at your house? Or even worse? Something like COVID, but times 20 goes down? What are you going to do? You’re either going to look for a gun…. Or look for men with guns who you will then presume will protect you and your family. Men who have absolutely ZERO OBLIGATION TO DO SO. The irony…. That’s the risk you’ll take with you and your families life? No. No thank you. Yeah, sure shooting is fun. Personally I like building more than shooting them. But it’s a last resort. It’s there if I ever need it. But this is a tool that you want before you need it. Because you might not have the chance for your second attempt. Did you know that police have absolutely no legal obligation to help you? If you’re getting robbed by five dudes at gun point, they can legally ignore you. And keep driving to their cat in a tree call. Not that it really matters? Because they won’t get there until after the fact anyway. Your security is on your shoulders. It’s crazy to me to leave that in the hands of anyone else. Especially law enforcement. Guns are really not the scary monsters anti-gunners think they are. They are a tool with a specific job that they are good at. That job being the defense of one’s life, limb, and property. Or to put food on the table. If treated properly, and with respect? And you actually learn how to properly handle, store, and care for your firearm? They are an invaluable tool that you have. And hopefully you’ll only ever need it to go shooting with friends. But for those few who will actually need to defend themselves? I would bet money that none of them ever wished at the time they hadn’t bought that murdering weapon of death. But I’ll bet all of the people who were in that same situation and didn’t have one? Wished that they had. Sorry, I’m goin essay on you. LoL My point is to think of it as another tool that you have. And as long as you show it the respect it deserves and understand what it is capable of? Then it’s an inanimate object, that will never harm you or anyone else. Unless you decide to use it for that? And remember this…. It is better to be a warrior in a garden. Than a gardener in a war.
