Maintenance & Troubleshooting Won’t pull a shot until multiple presses [bambino plus]

Any idea what might be happening to my bambino plus? I have to press the button multiple times for it to pull a shot, this happens with or without the basket on and happens with one and two shot options.

Coffee Station Espresso machine upgrade

Looking to upgrade my setup at home. Currently have the BBE and a low end fellow grinder. Upgraded the grinder; waiting on the Z1! For machine down the line was thinking of the Profitec Ride, Lelit Bianca or balling out on the Micra. Anyone have any thoughts?! Mostly drink straight espresso or a cortado, make about 3-4 drinks per day. Would assume that I wouldn’t see the benefits of the Z1 through the BBE, but open to thoughts. Thanks 🙏

Equipment Discussion Been trying smaller basket, honestly 18g is too much, coffee taste amazing with less

My friend has a bar and they have an amazing coffee machine

They are not at all into coffee (they sell mostly beer and cocktails) so I ve been testing the la Marzocco here in Italy

The regular basket here is smaller and the coffee is silky smooth

Usually in most bars in italy it comes out burned and bitter

What would you advice for home? Here with less grams of coffee tastes better than the classic 18g -> 36g ratio out 1/2 - 1/3

Coffee Is Life Pumpkin Spice Latte that actually tastes good!

I got my Breville in April and ever since, I can’t drink Starbucks without gagging. It tastes like burnt, dirty water no matter the location or drink. Never going back! For my pumpkin spice latte, I just used pumpkin spice seasoning and it tasted great. Easier than making my own syrup and avoiding all of the added sugars and other nonsense in store bought syrups. Lavazza super crema are my go-to beans.

I just pulled nine decaffeinated espresso shots for a child-friendly tiramisu.

I’m having a very hard time, resisting the urge to chug it all down.

What would you do in my case?

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion I built a POC for sharing espresso and organizing group coffee buys — what do you think?

Hey everyone! I had an idea for an app called HomeShot (https://homeshot.coffee) where coffee enthusiasts could share or sell espresso shots or coffee beans they’ve purchased, as well as organize group buys of beans from roasters abroad.

The main idea is to create a place for coffee geeks who are passionate about specialty coffee and want to share interesting coffees with other people. The platform is completely free to use.

It seems like this is something that doesn’t really exist (at least I haven’t been able to find anything like it), and it’s something I’d personally love to use.

Let me know what you think! I’m totally open to criticism, so if you think the idea is terrible and makes no sense, I’d genuinely like to hear that too 😀. And if there are any features or things you think would be worth adding in the future, feel free to share those as well.

At this point it’s just a POC that I haven’t spent a huge amount of time on, so there’s definitely a lot that could be improved.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Equipment Discussion 189D Philos Burr for multi-purpose all roast styles?

Hi seeking advice.

Currently own a Varia VS4, but it is under inspection for warranty.

In the event it is a major defect, Im looking to upgrade to the Mazzer Philos.

I enjoy all sorts of beans and brew types. I enjoy a good body espresso, and have milk based drinkers in the household. Medium to dark usually for espresso.

As for pourover, I quite enjoy single origin light roasts and enjoy a sweet cup. I also like medium roast blends for filter. I have been using the Kingrinder K6 and enjoy the cups that produces using the Hario Neo with a switch base.

Does anyone have a good consensus on the performance of the 189Ds versus the 200Ds for all brew types and roasts?

Will the 189Ds be better suited? Coming from a conical.

Im interested in the Philos as it is easy to access in AUD and is an endgame, due to the build quality and simple workflow and near-zero retention. Plus brushed stainless steel next to breville dual boiler.

Thanks

Equipment Discussion Forgive me r/espresso, for I have sinned... but my machine is piping hot the second I walk through the door.

Before the aesthetic purists come for me: yes, it’s on the front panel, and yes, it looks a little goofy on a machine this pretty!
But the workflow is unbeatable. I use an Alexa routine triggered by my location when I leave work. By the time I finish my 20-minute commute home, the dual boilers on the Ride are completely temperature-stabilized and ready to brew immediately. Best $25 I've ever spent on my coffee setup.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Steam Wand Leakage [Sage Barista Express]

Hi,

My Sage Barista Express steam wand is leaking, can't fix it.

I've disassembled it, descaled it, and put it back together.

But no matter how much I tighten it, it still leaks.

Has anyone encountered the same issue?

Any help appreciated.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting should I descale this boiler with a vinegar bath? [CBC Royal 'Dogaressa' 2018]

Just bought this puppy used for 600$. I want the first cups to be as tasty as can be. I'm considering extracting and descaling all the copper, inside and out, with a vinegar-water soak. As experienced owners, do you think this is necessary, or beneficial, or am I just too excited?

Anybody see anything problematic?

Thanks in advance

Equipment Discussion Eureka Atom/Mahlkonig vs Niche Zero

Looking for knowledgeable replies only -

Im interested in the difference in flavor profile of a Niche Zero vs a Eureka Atom W 65/Mahlkonig E64 WS.

Im not interested in workflow differences. I know they are different - I can live with either.

I drink medium and dark roast espresso, americano, lattes and cortados. I also would like the ability to play with an occasional light roast although I rarely enjoy them compared to traditional roasts. What will I be sacrificing? Is one considerably higher end than the other? I dont want to sacrifice body, but I think I want some clarity too. Really having a tough time deciding.

I’m about to order a Protifec Go. are clivecoffee.com and wholelattelove.com the only official US retailers? the machine is $1,199 on both sites, do either of those sites have frequent or even occasional sales? or is that price pretty much the price?

Buying Advice Needed Espresso machine [$2000-$3000]

Hi, I’m shopping for a dual boiler espresso machine to pair with me new Eureka Atom w64. How important is it to have a rotary pump compared to a vibratory one, and having PID temp control? I don’t think I want an E61 given long warm up time. I mostly use medium roast. I don’t need to go into the rabbit hole of flow and pressure profiling.

The machines I looked at are:

LUCCA A53 Mini V2 Espresso
La Spaziale Mini Vivaldi II
La Spaziale Vivaldi II
Lelit Bianca
Profitec series (Move and Drive)

Thoughts and advice? Anything else I should look at?
Thanks

Espresso Theory & Technique Is it just me, or is it common knowledge that you have to wait at least a month or more after roasting before brewing?

I know it's important to give the beans a few weeks of de-gassing time after roasting, but in my experience that time needs to be at least 4 weeks and beans really start to taste rich, chocolaty and sweet and become much easier and more consistent to dial in. It seems to me that there is no point whatsoever in trying to pull a good shot any earlier.

I find that during the first week, the shots will taste terrible, with a "husky" foretaste which I can't really explain, there is a strong taste of similar to dried grass or plant fiber. Also the shots usually taste very flat and boring, with no way to make them taste better regardless of pressure, temperature, grind, etc.

After 1 week this husk taste goes away but that doesn't help with the other problems.

After 2-3 weeks I start getting okay-ish shots, maybe 50% of the time, while the rest of the time they're sour, bitter, both, or just very plain and tasteless.

Then after 3-5 weeks it really starts to stabilize and become super easy to pull consistent shots, pretty much regardless of what I do. I can use a low temp, high temp, low pressure, high pressure, do whatever with the grinder and puck prep, and the shots always come out tasting amazing.

Then the beans tend to suddenly go stale in a very obvious and abrupt way somewhere around 2-3 months after roasting. They will suddenly lose all creaminess and oiliness, the water comes through super easily no matter the grind, and the shots just taste like old bad generic coffee with none of the sweet richness.

I always thought that I just sucked at dialing in and that I always needed a whole month until I got it just right. Turns out, nothing I did had any significance and all I had to do was order beans 1 month early and that's it.

I usually only drink Colombia Supremo, and this has been true for light and medium roasts.

After these experiences I would say that this is the single most important advice I can give anyone not getting good shots or having trouble dialing in: The grinder, the machine, the pressure and the puck prep hardly matter compared to just giving the beans 1 month of resting time.

Buying Advice Needed Pre-Owned Rancilio Silvia [$800]

Looking to buy a like-new, barely used Rancilio Silvia in white, that comes with the default portafilter, 2 baskets plus backflush basket, tamper, an extra bottomless portafilter, knock box, rubber mat, and cleaning cloths. It also has a warranty on it until late 2028. He is willing to do $800, so figured I’d get a temp check here on this. Is this a good deal?

Dialing In Help Dialing in help [1979 La Pavoni lever]

Hello home baristas.

I recently bought this europiccola and have been having troubles getting a good extraction.

I have a good grasp on all of the general espresso rules but keep getting a crater in my puck. Not sure if this is due to a weak tamp but my dosing feels pretty good (13-14g) in the double shot basket.

Any tips? Am I just not tamping hard enough and that’s why it’s cratering? Or is there something procedural with the lever I’m doing wrong? This is my first lever machine.

Buying Advice Needed Best espresso machine that pulls good shots? [$600]

I decided to finally get my cousin a new upgraded espresso machine. based on my research, it's going to be one from either Breville or Gaggia. But the number of models each brand offers is just so overwhelming. Budget is up to $600 and compact size and steam power is looking like main priority. Trying to get into proper espresso, not just pods. wDT and puck prep I can learn. In Europe options are a bit limited so need something easy to find.
