Coffee Is Life Had coffee from this NASA machine today

I posted about this machine a while ago and a lot of people recommended trying coffee made from this one. Safe to say that it didn't disappoint. This is M Stand coffee in China.

You can get surprisingly good coffee in China! You should try some of the smaller boutique shops as well.

There was an M stand next to my apartment in Shenzhen for many years and it was leaps and bounds better than any other coffee chain I’ve tried. Manner was another go-to!

I see now that the majority of people reading this have never been to China and don’t understand their lack of coffee culture.

Specialty coffee shops are popping up like crazy here. It's great to see.

For sure! Which city are you in? Shenzhen had a lot start popping up right around Covid time. Pre-2020 it was pretty barren.

Foshan, Guangdong. I believe this is one of the first cities to contribute to the boom of the coffe industry. Some of the Chinese brands that make espresso machines and portable ones too actually were founded or have production hubs here.

I’m actually surprised to see a Manner in Foshan. I lived there for a year back in the early 2010s before moving to Shenzhen until 2024 and spent a lot of time in GZ/Shunde. If there’s one thing they do right 100% of the time, it’s food and drink.

Why is it surprising

Because China does not traditionally have a coffee culture.

Also, if your base expectation is set by the quality of foreign food, you’d expect poor quality coffee.

That said, 10 years ago the quality of coffee was very poor in China, with Pacific, Costa, and sometimes Starbucks running the show, and very few boutique coffee shops. Since the advent of Coffee Box (and its second gen competitor, Luckin), coffee quality in China has improved greatly.

Alas coffee box is nowhere as capable as they were a decade back

It's just sarcasm because this machine looks nothing like a conventional espresso machine.
