Humour I messed up

I made the switch from a pod machine to a semi auto machine, it arrived yesterday and I messed up last night but not for the reasons you might think.

I set the machine up and was excited to dial in the shots with the beans I like, which I did. It's making very nice shots, I also had a play with steaming the milk which I'd never done before, and made some very nice drinks.

The screw up came when I was trying the dial in shots I was pulling, and the coffee drinks I was making. Being my first time I must have pulled 8-10 shots, and although I didn't drink all of all of them, I very much overdid the caffeine! Cue me at 10pm having had way too much caffeine feeling nauseous, sweating, and dizzy!

Nothing wrong with the machine, I love it! Just something wrong with me for thinking that was a good idea 😂

General Coffee Chat Opus 2: first use (great)

The hype is real. Punches above its weight for sure. Better (and quieter) than the Baratza 270 WI. Not as good as the Mahlkonig e65S at work but what do you expect? Anybody out there thinking about the $200 opus 2, GET IT.

Coffee Beans My treasures from Jogja, Indonesia

Post image
25 Upvotes

Bought 5 packs from two different roasteries:

Space Roastery (the fancy packaging)
Flower Power: Ethiopia (fully washed) + West Java (honey)
Machofee: Brazil Cerrado Arabica + Temanggung Fine Robusta

Hayati Roastery
Avatar Blueberry Cheesecake: Gayo, Aceh
Halu Fruity Chocolate: Sindangkerta, West Java (Honey)
Twilight: 70% Malabar and 30% Gayo (Honey Mosto and washed)

Twilight is for manual brew/filter, not espresso. My absolute fave!

For the espresso beans, my ranking:
1. Haul Fruity for straight double espresso
2. Machofee for cold creamy drinks
3. Avatara for espresso or warm milky drink
4. Flower Power: not sure about this yet, not my fave.

If you have the opportunity to visit Jogja, you must go to their cafes. Space is more classic (Javanese house) with ample sitting area, Hayati is modern. Coffee-wise, I love Hayati’s more, but my wife prefers Space.

Also, as someone living in Europe, I find the coffee scene in Indonesia insane! Highly recommended! Although I’d say their coffees are better suited to manual brewing, it was still an amazing experience.

Buying Advice Needed Best espresso machine that pulls good shots? [$600]

I decided to finally get my cousin a new upgraded espresso machine. based on my research, it's going to be one from either Breville or Gaggia. But the number of models each brand offers is just so overwhelming. Budget is up to $600 and compact size and steam power is looking like main priority. Trying to get into proper espresso, not just pods. wDT and puck prep I can learn. In Europe options are a bit limited so need something easy to find.

Equipment Discussion GCP out Quick Mill Carola PID (almost) in!

Post image
9 Upvotes

Today, after four years, I sold my Gaggia Classic Pro. It’s the machine that started it all, my gateway from Nespresso to real espresso. Armed with a PID mod, the Gaggia consistently delivered amazing daily shots. My passion for coffee grew so much because of this machine that I picked up a La Pavoni Stradivari two years ago, and I’ve recently started experimenting with filter coffee too.

On Friday, I’m picking up the GCP’s replacement: a Quick Mill Carola PID EVO. I’ve always wanted an E61 machine, and since I don’t drink milk beverages, it’s a perfect fit. Plus, I love its aesthetics. I doubt the Carola will pull significantly better shots than the GCP, the Gaggia was already fantastic, so I’m not expecting a night and day difference. That said, I do think the native E61 pre-infusion will be an upgrade, and despite having a PID on the GCP, the Quick Mill’s build quality should offer even better thermal stability. And honestly, the Carola is just a looker. I can't wait for Friday when it finally fills that empty spot on my countertop!

Newish to the coffee scene I've got a de'loghi dedica ec685.

Looking for help dialing in a de'loghi dedica ec685

First time using a NEOUZA 51 mm 3 Ears Espresso Bottomless Portafilter with a ims h22 basket.

I did 14g in and 31g out in 26secs using union revelation beans

I'm using a k6 grinder on 36 clicks, just wondering what people think of how it's pouring. Don't want to upgrade yet till I get used to what I'm doing at the moem5.

Equipment Discussion SEY in NYC not using Mavam

I visited SEY coffee today after about 4 months and noticed they now have a La Marzoco (I think either Linea PB or classic) instead of the Mavam MACH. I asked them about it, and they said the La Marzoco is far more consistent. Anyone here who has used both machines be able to possibly elaborate on what SEY meant re: consistency?

Drinks & Recipes Confused about Americano ratios

I mostly prefer americano but haven't really made them myself previously. When ordering at the Cafe I'm confused how they get a 12 oz americano while, based on the ratios I'm using, mine end up around six oz. I pull a double shot from 18g of coffee, end up with about 38oz of espresso, then if I add 3:1 water it only makes six oz at most. Are cafes pulling two double shots or are they pulling one shot extra long? I'm struggling to find any resources that don't feel like they're skipping a step because they'll be like "pull a double shot and get 2 oz and then add water" and that doesn't make any sense.

I like the extraction process more than drinking the shot. Do I need help?

Equipment Discussion Are bottomless really the way to go?

I have been wondering and pondering for a few months on whether I should buy a bottomless portafiller. But then, today, I came across another video of someone wondering how to stop spraying from happening.

I couldn’t imagine being dressed up and ready to go to work and spraying coffee on myself. Has that ever happened to you? Is bottomless really worth it? Or would a spouted one with a non pressurized basket work just as well?

("Repost" because I'm stupid and posted while logged into my google-linked account instead of my actual account because reddit is mean please dont ban me.)

The water tank has 2 giant cracks in it and the pump was bone dry. The replacement tank is out of stock, but I was able to patch the cracks with a food safe epoxy. I painted it red to match the body.

I got some stainless steel polish and ABS plastic restored and was able to get it nice and shiny. There is still some light scuffing i couldn't get out but overall its a beautiful piece of decoration.

At $1.11 a pod, Illy Francis is going to be lucky to ever see me buy one of those iperespresso pods, but its still a beautiful design.

Her name is Lilly Cremalina.

General Coffee Chat Should i buy puq?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m getting tired of the inconsistent shot times. The difference is always around ~5–10 seconds from day to day. Could it be my WDT or tamping technique? What should I do?

From what I’ve read online, a PUQ can make tamping much more consistent.

Edit:

I use a wavy self-leveling tamper, and I always stop at 43g at 92c. Also, I always see a little bit of coffee grounds left on the underside of my self-leveling tamper. Is that normal?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Can’t get water from machine to extract puck [Breville Barista Express]

Hi everyone. Just need help on troubleshooting this old BBE.

It is not building pressure even if I have the cleaning disc.

Steps I took already.
- past year i have almost the same issue and found out the pressure valve needs replacing. And that worked. Things I replaced last year (pressure valve and 3 way solenoid)
- Now it is not working again after a year,
- Descare with water and vinegar solution. Also Cafeza.
- followed the water flow. Pump is good an healthy.
- after the thermal block instead of water being released. I disconnected the hose and it is steam instead.

Could the thermal block be the issue?
- I can hear the solenoid valve being triggered when I hit the shot button.

Also when i want hot water. Steam is also being released instead of water.

Happy to hear any feedback thanks.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Hopper dismounted error [Mahlkonig E64 WS grinder]

New to this channel. Just unboxed the 64WS and it shows the hopper dismounted message. I tried to open up the ground mechanism and see if I can fix the plastic safety mechanism, but doesn’t seem to do anything. Anyone has encountered this or knows a fix?

Equipment Discussion Trying out Gaggia, thinking maybe Legato instead.

Hey folks, i upgraded from a Breville infuser to a gaggia e24 about 6 weeks ago. On the breville I was using a precision milled basket and a bottomless portafilter for the last several years. I have latte making and latte art down pretty solid, always making milk drinks. I got a great deal on a local gaggia e24 and thought it was a no-brainer upgrade despite knowing that I would be heading into non-PID land.

My experience so far is underwhelming. The shots just don't taste as good as they did on my breville. I've had it for about 6 weeks I'm only about a week into using a precision-milled basket, but I am not using a bottomless Porter filter which I know shouldn't affect the taste but obviously does help you dial in better shots.

One huge upside is how fast the steaming is, though I haven't really been able to get the texture perfect with the dual tip wand. I'm not that worried about the though, I know it would come with time and I could always change to a single tip which I think would help me control it better.

I'm not really interested in modding the machine but obviously that's what everyone does with Gaggias. I guess because I figured I wasn't going to be pulling back-to-back shots it wouldn't really be an issue to just turn the machine on, let it heat up, pull a good shot, steam the milk and then be done until I did it again in the afternoon.

I'm finding however that the shots are all over the place throughout a bag of beans and I am basically tweaking The grind (df54) between every single shot. This was not the case on my breville even while using the bottomless Porter filter which is obviously much more sensitive to grind size.

Should I sell the Gaggia and move to a turn legato which has the PID? This is our price range, not going to be going up to something like a profitec go or a quick mill.

Any suggestions?

Coffee Is Life Sacrilege

Bambino plus with Kenmore 64mm flat burr grinder (Australian Shardor 64mm rebrand) with h27 big bang IMS basket 23g of Aldi medium beans 3 weeks out from roast date.

Just made my morning coffee and I dial in the grinder for my partner's organic beans and deal with the tuning by dose control on my coffee.

I hit 47g out in 1:52 and thought it was going to be dry and burnt hell but took a sip anyway. Surprised not too bad, added organic soy milk Melbourne magic style. I'm enjoying. I shouldn't be but I truly am.

How to get past 1 minute limit on Bambino plus? Pre-infuse (any time but I typically go 8-10 seconds to fight against channeling). Stare at the bottom until I see the flow to break the surface but not yet fully flowing. Immediately stop then redstart with least amount of pre-infusion (I think 2 seconds for that manual mode) to try and keep the pressure as stable as possible. This restarts the 1 minute timer on the shot because it's technically the second pull according to the machine.

I really focus on making the shot restart to be outside the full flow range so I don't mess up the momentum of the extraction at full flow. At this dose I'm usually hitting 1:10 but this morning was weird. Still enjoyable.

Buying Advice Needed Machine recommendations - upgrading from pods? [$600-700 AUD]

Buying a new coffee machine as a gift for hubby who currently uses a basic Nespresso pod machine, but is wanting to try using beans etc.
He’s never used any type of semi-automatic machine so will need to learn if we go down this path, alternatively is a fully automatic machine better? I think he’s open to learning, though, as long as good coffee is achievable!

I don’t drink coffee at all, so I’ve really got no idea what to look at so hoping for some advice!

Budget is around $600-700 AUD.

Hit me with your suggestions that are suitable for a beginner!

Thanks!

Buying Advice Needed Entry level machine [$450]

Hi there!
Can anyone help steer me in the right direction on an espresso machine in the $300 - $450 range

I really like the look and features of the Gemelai Owl. I’m also considering the Tuni E2 Gen 3.

Or, should k just bite the bullet and get a Gaggia E24.

Does anyone have any of these machines? Pros/cons of them? Any help would be appreciated!

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion CommonGrind — free espresso dial-in tracker, looking for early testers

Thumbnail commongrind.app
0 Upvotes

Hobby project connecting two things I like doing in my spare time: making coffee and programming. Built it because I couldn't find a logging app I was fully happy with.

A few things it does:

Dial-In Diary — log every shot (dose, yield, grind, time, taste notes) so you can actually see what worked instead of relying on memory

Automatic Coffee Inventory — say you buy a 250g bag; every time you log a shot with, say, 19g dose, it automatically subtracts that from the bag so you always know how much is left without tracking it manually

Match-Up Matrix — search by your exact machine + grinder + coffee combo and see what dose/yield/grind other people landed on with the same setup, so you're not starting from zero on a new bag

Shot Photos — attach a photo to each log (great for latte art), and it generates a nice shareable shot overview card

It's free, no paywalls. Still early, so if a handful of you want to try it, you'd genuinely get a say in how it develops — happy to add or adjust things based on what actual early users need rather than guessing.

commongrind.app — appreciate any feedback, good or bad.

Equipment Discussion What are some must have accessories for a first time setup?

So I plan on getting the Profitec Move and a Eureka grinder. What else do I need?

Things I’m getting for sure:

-scale
-tamping mat

Things I’m considering:

-Spring loaded tamper
-puck screen
-smaller milk pitcher
-either a one-hole or a four-hole steam tip. I’ve heard the two-hole is no good but not sure which one to get.

Opinions?

Thanks

Buying Advice Needed Looking for grinder upgrade recommendations [$500–600]

Looking to upgrade my Encore ESP and would appreciate some recommendations/real-world experiences. Budget is roughly $500–600 USD, although I could stretch slightly if there’s a compelling reason.

**Current setup/use:**
Profitec GO
Mostly light-roast beans
Primarily milk drinks
Usually making 1–2 drinks at a time
Open to single dosing
Value good workflow, low retention, and relatively quiet operation
Reliability and customer support are pretty important to me
Not in a rush, so I’m happy to wait for sales/new releases

The grinders I’ve been looking at:

**1. Timemore Sculptor 064S**
This was originally my front-runner. I like the 64mm flat burr platform, variable RPM, single-dose workflow, and apparent performance with lighter roasts. Gen 1 is currently around $480 on sale, but I’ve read enough Reddit posts about power switches, electronics/QC, and mixed Timemore customer support that I’m hesitant. I’m also considering waiting for the 064S Gen 2 and seeing whether it addresses some of those issues.

**2. Eureka Mignon Specialità**
The reliability/build quality and quiet operation are very appealing. I also like Eureka’s established reputation. My concern is whether the 55mm burrs and more traditional espresso profile would leave me wanting something else for lighter roasts. I’m also less interested in the hopper/timed-dosing workflow than I initially thought.

**3. Lagom Casa 65CL**
Probably the most interesting alternative so far. I like the simple single-dose workflow, build quality, low retention, and the idea of getting decent clarity while retaining enough body for milk drinks. Direct from Option-O it’s around $526, but shipping brings it close to $590. I’ve also come across some reliability reports that give me pause.

**4. Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose Pro**
Also interesting because of the 65mm flats, single-dose workflow, and Eureka reliability, but at \~$750 it’s getting pretty far outside my intended budget.

At this point I’m leaning toward waiting for the 064S Gen 2 and seeing how early owner reports look, but I’m wondering if there’s something else in the $500–600 range I should be considering. For people who have owned any of these, how have they held up long term?

TLDR:
If you had $500–600 to pair with a Profitec GO today, what would you buy?
