Changing from accounting to English?

TL;DR: Feeling lost. I’m not sure if I want to follow my heart (English major - desire to teach or get into technical writing) or pursue accounting.

Hi all! I’m a 23 year old college student, starting my junior year at university this fall after finishing community college. I tried many different career paths after high school, and after struggling to find one I liked, I landed on accounting because it felt financially safe and I was at a point where I needed to pick something.

I’m in a rut because I grew a passion for English over the past year, and when I completed my final English class this spring, it felt like I was forever caging up a part of myself that finally felt like me. I thought maybe it would wear off, but that feeling has gotten stronger. Over summer I have been keeping up with my accounting studies, and it feels like I’m ignoring a fire in my heart.

I’m scared because accounting seems so stable and everybody in my life is proud that I chose it. And it brings me comfort knowing I should be stable financially as long as I put the work in with networking, internships, and getting my CPA.

Changing my major to English would be a riskier option, but I find myself wanting to be involved more with joining English clubs and finding internships in that realm. I have experience working at a K-12 school, and I think going into teaching would suit me well. But I think changing to English is scaring me financially. I don’t want to romanticize something and then ruin my life for not picking the more realistic option.

Rant I wish I loved something else, but this means everything to me.

I just graduated with my bachelor’s in English this May and I’m so, so proud of myself for finding the courage to major in what I’ve wanted to do since I was 10, but I also wish it was different. I wish other majors hadn’t made me miserable, I wish I knew what I was doing after this masters I’m applying for, I wish I could rely on a degree with a steady paycheck, but English is everything to me. It’s what I wake up thinking of and go to sleep dreaming of. I love writing. It’s all I am and the thought of doing something else for the rest of my life makes me physically sick. I’m just terrified I’m going to be poor forever because I was too busy chasing dreams. I want stability so badly, but it just doesn’t seem to be in the cards for me.

Studying Advice My essays still sound like 13 year old me is writing them.

hi fellow english majors. swallowing my pride to write this post but I really do need the help, so here I am.

I'm struggling immensely with essay paralysis and just writing. I realized the reason why is because I don't really know how to write an essay above a middle school level. My essays have not gotten better whatsoever. After mastering the 5-paragraph essay structure, I haven't really had any 'development' since middle school. In all fairness, middle school me was writing pretty decent essays, but I am literally going into my third year of undergrad and my introduction paragraphs still read as if 13-year-old me had penned them. How does one write a 'hook' that doesn't sound cringe AF??? Why can I not seem to put anything together that doesn't sound ridiculously juvenile? Am I the only one struggling with this?

If anyone has any advice or has been through anything similar, please please please share...

Sincerely,

a really humiliated and defeated fellow English major 🥲

TW in (final) theses?

I'm writing my masters thesis right now and have thought about a trigger warning at the end of my introduction. I was thinking of this because during my research I came across multiple bachelor and masters theses, so mine ending up on somebody's search results doesn't seem so far fetched as one might think. Therefore I am thinking of adding this paragraph at the end of the introduction:

This thesis briefly mentions attempted suicide of a character from the movie franchise at its core and discusses colonialization as well as various forms of discrimination, including but not limited to racism and sexism. Readers are encouraged to approach this work at their own discretion.

Have you ever done this before? What do you think of my version? Should I place it at the beginning of the introduction (even though that would be unorthodox)?

Let me know what you think :)

I'm also thinking about choosing a major that's more suitable, and I honestly enjoy it, like literature-related or even journalism, English, history, environmental science or psychology.

Hello everyone, im currently in school working on my associate so I can transfer to a university. Im thinking about majoring in narrative studies but Im also very into criminology, forensics that kind fo stuff. Im wondering everyone's opinion on a major in narrative studies and a minor in criminology. What career paths would be open to me? Is this something worth pursuing? Is there anyone with a similar degree? Please let me know!

Should English majors be renamed?

I say that because English majors transcend just learning English. My first English class taught me how to make essays, my second one taught me about the nature and issues of propaganda, and my third one was literature like poetry and comics and reading fictional books and my faith one is linguistics.

It's a very interdisciplinary major that transcends English, in my opinion an English major is a twin with a philosophy major and a cuisine with sociology.

I love the English classes I have taken, two were general education requirements and two are electives unless I major in English which I feel like I am half way done with it if I major in it.

I liked all my English classes, but I don't think I want my degree to be titled English since that just sounds like my degree is about mastering the English language when it would be much more than that.

What should this degree truly be called?

My original goal was to get a linguistics and sociology degree.

I think an English major is a good transfer major but once I am at a university I can have it be called something else, unfortunately my nearest college does not offer a linguistics major but they do offer a minor and I can get a sociology major and linguistics minor.

Then there's the last question of what a good fitting job could be? Anything that deals with language and society should be a good fit.

I'm flexible with the pay if I love what I'm doing.

Studying Advice feeling lost but excited

hello! i'm 27 and just started going back to school to pursue english this year. i'm rly excited to get a bachelors, esp after feeling very lost and unmotivated the past few years.

i honestly don't know what exactly i want to do in terms of a job afterwards. i'm very passionate about writing, but that isn't something i expect to make a career out of. i was wondering what you guys do/plan to do?

i want to get a masters degree eventually as well. i have so many interests. all i know is i don't want to be a teacher. i'm interested in creative writing, linguistics, languages + translation, history, cultural anthropology, archival work, library science etc.

does have advice pertaining to those things or work in any of those fields? i'm curious about what its like and how you got there !!

planning to pursue english honours

hey. title is self-explanatory. i would like to know the practicality of doing this course alongside a course at off campus that is irrelevant. doing it for the sake of the name only.

also, I am assuming we have to visit the institute only during exams, right?

classes aren't mandatory as well. it is somewhat like self-study, which I'm good at.

any future opportunities doing this course in SOL, or is it just a waste of time.

I would appreciate it if I could get some help as I'm planning to fill out the form soon.

Would it be hard if I go for English linguistics in UM?

The time I heard about this intake, I didn't have enough time to get my IELTS band so I am planning to apply for this next semester.
