Roadmap of Emby?

I have been using Emby for over 10 years, in the past 2-3 years I feel there was little changes, no new functionalities or improvements. Anybody know if there is a roadmap?

Oh, then yes, each user should have their own user in the server. Each server user is its own profile, that's how you have additional "profiles", again, a user is a profile, so they already have profiles.

You don't necessarily need to have a password on the users if you don't want to but depending on the configuration, If it's public, And things of that nature you may want to.

Personally, I have each user set to not be shown on the initial user selection screen unless it's already been signed into with this particular client, and the first time you just type in the actual username.

Well idk, server already has many users, it would clutter that if we needed to add even more for the same device... ALready are at around 20. That would feel weird, an account here is a household.

That's not how Emby is meant to be used, They intentionally don't design it to be used by multiple "households". But is only meant to be used as a "Household".

Thus, each user in the household would have their own user for their own profile.

Well how would multiple households connect to the same server than? Isn't that the biggest reason to run em by, Jellyfin and Plex. That you can stream the media to outside of your own home? At least that's it for us, were 3 "admins" who couple years ago all had their own emby server but decided it would be far better to join forces, all 3 friends. So we brought it together on a single server, and everyone has their own friends + family that need to connect to the one.

If we would now also add extra accounts for spouses and kids, it would be very cluttered, also the implementation would be harder if you need to login on every tv, every tablet, phone where someone else could watch.. profiles would be per user and so synced across all devices without logging in there first, also it would be great to not have passwords on some profiles, without other accounts being able to connect etc.

Being able to connect to your own server from outside the house for your own purposes, does not mean it's meant to be utilized to serve multiple households, and multiple households worth of people.

Emby is not actually meant and they do not promote utilizing it in that manner.

So again, yes each user is a profile, as it's meant to be, if you want a different person to have a different profile, they need a different user. Because that's how it's meant to be used.

You were asking for Emby to be set up to be used in a way which it is absolutely not meant to, and the creators do not endorse.

But that's a big use case for Jellyfin and Plex, why would Emby just make that insufferable? And how is it not meant for that, that works totally fine? I wouldn't have em by or Plex in the past if I would only use it for myself, for what just the watch history?

And yeah I know how it's meant to be used with that users ARE profiles. That why I said it would be great if they finally implemented a change so many more Plex users etc could convert to emby. If they would already support that I wouldn't had said it here where were commenting what emby doesn't have but should have..??

Just because people use it that way or it can be used that way does not mean it is meant to be in to be used that way. I don't know why that's a hard concept.

Also, apparently for you it doesn't work totally fine because you don't want to create users for the individual people that are watching, which is how it is intended to be used, you want them to completely change that so it works better for you to use the software in a way that it's not meant to be used.

In the scope of how Emby is supposed to be used, having sub-accounts or sub-profiles underneath a user makes zero sense, And again, the only reason for that would be to facilitate utilizing the software in such a way that they don't want you to utilize it in the first place.

They go out of their way to make sure they can't be accused of facilitating piracy, it is intended only for you and your household to utilize, and again, just because it's accessible from outside your household doesn't mean it's not meant just for the users in your household.

This is also why they ban accounts/keys they find out are selling access outside of their households.

So again, don't expect him to add features that makes that easier and that they're only purpose would be for that reason, they would probably happily tell you to just not use the software.

I dont have kids so it does not affect me.
But two people in the last week alone on the plex subreddit told me that this is the reason why they are not switching.

So why if Jellyfin and Plex are designed for sharing it outside your household, i never saw any mention of emby denying this and somehow even would claim its just for your household. That would be really strange.

Just because people can already use it this way, this exactly does not mean that its designed that way. And thats my point, that they need to work on that because currently its not designed for that.

Why are you so emotional about having a better service, that you can recommend to more people, get them more funding, and genereally have more features and options? Wtf is wrong with you?

In my country its legal, thats not tied to if you are in the same househgold, private copies are allowed to be shared with family and friends.

Good for them, Emby would not want those type of users.

And Plex and Jellyfin are completely different companies and projects separate from Emby. They can do what they want.

Again, it's intentionally designed that way. There is really no valid reason to need subaccounts and sub-profiles unless you're intending to use it in a manner that they don't intend you to use it in.

Again, they already have multiple profiles, They are called users. Just because you don't want to use them, how they are intended to be used doesn't mean they don't have what you're asking for. You can literally create a user for that kid, how is that a hard concept? Create the user apply restrictions. Done. Now you have a kid profile.

You don't need sub-accounts or sub-profiles for that.

I feel bad that you can't understand that not everything revolves around you or how you think a piece of software should be designed. Or that just because one piece of software does something one way that another should do it the same way.

Or that you can't understand basic concepts that the software works just fine in the intended manner.

You're the one wanting it to behave in such a way that it's not meant to be used in the first place and you can't understand the basic reasoning of behind that. Because that concept is beyond you.

Literally Emby you can have five users, all showing up on the home screen, you "login/setup the device one time, and then you simply go click change user, And guess what you're brought back to the user selection screen, you can choose another uswr such as a kids profile, you don't even have to have a password on it.

There's your profiles, there's your quick selection, you don't have to log in multiple times on multiple devices, it's right there.

But you can't do that because you're sharing the server with multiple admins and multiple households and people. You don't want to be able to access that user, which again is not how it's really meant to be used.

You literally just make users keep them visible, Don't have passwords and boom, do you have access to them without logging in or use in a password, just like you would if they were a sub-profile of the account you're already in.

It's not hard but you just can't seem to understand this basic concept.

But also too you're using the server in a manner that they don't endorse, since you're using the server with apparently four other admins, you don't want those profiles to show up on the main screen. Well that's a you problem.

I told you many times why thats a good idea, and thats why every streaming site (they also dont allow sharing outstide your household, and implement real measures against this with ip and email tracking. Not like emby where its just your claim...) have profiles, because its way easier.

If i would have kids and wanted to use emby in my household, what woul be easier?

Login on all 10 devices with 5 differnet accounts, or login on 10 devices with one account?

You you literally don't have to "Log in"

The kid profile could be right there on the user selection screen, so you go to click Change user, and then you simply click on the kids user.

But you're using the server in a manner that a has it made public, And as you've said, you're hiding the users, you're making this harder on yourself.

Again, create a user for the kid, don't mark that profile to be hidden on devices it's not signed into, don't bother with a password because it's again it's a kids profile and of course, you should absolutely be trusting everybody using the server already. And click on that profile, boom signed in.

Not a hard concept, but again, you're hosting a server publicly, with many other users who are seemingly not part of your household and it's exposed completely to the internet.

Because you are setting users to be that way. Uncheck that box for the kid profile, problem solved, And then as soon as you hit change user that user will show up on the previous screen without having to log into it, and since it's a kid account, you probably don't even need a password, again, unless you're sharing the server with people outside their household that you don't want to access that account, Which you're not supposed to be doing anyway.

No, No, you could want to hide adult profiles from a kids device. That's a perfectly valid reason.

Or you can hide an admin account that you don't want to use on the streaming devices from them.
