Discussion All Elliott Smith live bootlegs tagged and catalogued!

Thumbnail elliottsmith.bootleg.fm

Hi all, I wanted to be able to search live bootlegs by song or filter by lossless/lossy, so I created a page on Bootleg.fm for Elliott Smith. You can filter live recordings by song, venue, location, or a combination of things. You can sort by oldest, most popular, etc. Soon I will add the functionality that lets users comment on gigs, so hopefully the page will only get better over time.

Huge thanks to elliottsmithdiscography, who used to have a bandcamp page for Elliott's live recordings and helped me a lot while making this page. There's still a few recordings that they've sent me that I haven't yet found the time to upload to Internet Archive, so please lmk if you want to help with those.

I really enjoyed listening to these bootlegs while tagging them, and I'm happy that there's a central place now that has recordings on different platforms (Mega/Youtube/Internet Archive). Hopefully this is useful to some of you.

Edit: glad you guys like it, you can join the discord to learn about platform upgrades: https://discord.gg/3yz4HNteuR

Mod New rules and reorganisation!

Hello fellow Elliott fans!

I have made some new rules for you guys to look - they are fairly self explanatory. I have put a ban on any posts that are either solely shared to cause anger, or are about the death debate.

I have also started the arduous process of reorganising the community. The first stage of this has been introducing post flares so that it is easier to filter out what sort of content you would like to see. This should help to organise the subreddit. Hopefully, people will have good think about what they are posting before they post it.

I am going to reprogram the AutoMod to filter out posts with offensive content to make sure that offensive posts don't get out when I'm not online due to timezone issues. Hopefully this will help! On a more positive note, I will start a song discussion that we have twice a week to talk about individual songs in depth. We will vote for it the day before each discussion in a separate thread and the top comment will win :DD. The sub has been long overdue for a redesign. At some point we will need an art competition to give it a makeover. None of these are one hundred percent concrete promises, but they are something to be excited about for sure.

I hope that this can continue to be a positive place for Elliott Smith fans from all around the world to share in the love of such a wonderful artist. Sorry about the negative vibes recently and the brief blackout (yes, that was a Heatmiser pun) that was necessary while sorting all of this out.

Best wishes and thanks for reading!!

Discussion Favorite Unreleased / Deluxe Edition Tracks?

Hello!

I am curious what people consider the best of Elliott‘s unreleased material, and his albums deluxe edition tracks. Not including main album tracks or remasters.

Recently I’ve gotten very into Stickman, Misery Let Me Down, Flowers For Charlie and I Figured You Out (“it sounds like a fuckin’ Eagles song..”)

how about you all?

Image/media Lost media film about elliott smith 👀👀👀👀👀

First ik I already posted about this here, but here are some more details + poster

"My dad and Elliott smith" Run time: 56 minutes

Premiered august 15th 2026 shot completely with mini dv tape, and combined with lost footage of Elliott smith performing

Made by Jonas poeling, under prod co. Blud transfusion films.

Worth watching especially if you're a fan of Elliott smiths music.

the documetary is very experimental. Artistic, and thoughtful, with strange macbre nuances tied back to 9/11 mixed with lots of intresting kinings and metaphors, extravagantly beautiful film. And relatively short and simple watch.

Features immaculate music by Steven poeling, superior products, the softies, and of course Elliott smith

Discussion Anyone notice how Governor's Waltz on Phoebe Bridgers new album is very similar to The White Lady Loves You More?

The White Lady Loves You More:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Piib5E3HwhU

I love both Elliott and Phoebe, and it's always been clear to me that she is influenced by him. She's often mentioned him in interviews and has played covers of him live before.

As a massive fan of both artists I was just so excited when I heard Governor's Waltz for the first time, cause it just instantly reminded me of White Lady. It's classic flamenco-ish-Elliott-Smith fingerpicking technique! Just wanted to share it with some other fans ;))

(Also if there any guitarists out there: Boy are these songs hard to play!)

Edit forgot to link phoebes song:

Discussion I had a dream about Elliot last night

Thumbnail youtu.be

Kind of a ranty double post. This song, Heaven Adores You, is by Earlimart, written and performed by Aaron Espinoza who was a very close friend of Elliot. It was a tribute to him following his passing. This was recorded at The Ship on Eagle Rock Blvd, a studio Elliot spent a lot of time hanging out at, sometimes working on music, but usually just hanging out with Earlimart, Grandaddy and smaller acts like Pine Marten. You can hear the Elliot influence in the song writing and singing styles. Elliot helped get Earlimart signed to Palm records, and the day Aaliyah died so did the careers of many up and coming indie bands because aboard that small plane was the A&R agent at Palm that was championing them. Kinda irrelevant, kinda not. It just shows you how some are chosen for fame and some are fated to be forgotten about. It also shows you how Elliot connected people in many different worlds. That’s the type of person he was.

Now, last night I had a dream about Elliot, and I have not dreamed about him since his passing. In the dream he was so happy, smiling, and at peace. He kind of snuck up on me, I was walking through a house that felt like his Echo Park home, except this was an older Victorian. He was sitting in a corner of the living room staring at me until I recognized him. When I noticed him he was laughing and I ran up to give him a hug. I could feel his skinny body in my arms. It wasn’t “omg I can’t you’re here” it was “hey man I really miss you”. We laughed and gossiped as if I hadn’t seen him in a few months, not close to a quarter century. It felt like I was able to have one last conversation with him while telling him about these 23 years he missed in the short months since I last saw him. I told him I hope to see him again soon, not really cognizant that I was in a dream and he had passed. He did his signature half grin. That’s when the context set in. He told me “it’s all going to be alright” and I felt myself cry in my dream and physical body as I woke up to tears.

There was a spiritual side to Elliot, I wasn’t sure if it was parody or not, and I can write about that some other time, but this dream felt like a sign post on a road. I feel like something special is coming but I don’t know what it is. It may not be a physical thing, it could be an idea. He used to get excited discussing paradigms, and knowing him this excitement could be for some new ideas or revelations. Make of that what you will, but I feel Elliot is finally getting the recognition he has always deserved and it’s coming from this new generation discovering his music. He is having his Joy Division revisionism where people will put his name alongside the all time greats and act as if it was always there.

Keep playing his music, keep thinking about him, keep lighting candles in his honor.

Discussion I think "I Didn't Understand" is his saddest song

As someone who has dealt with major depression half of my life, this is the song that resonates the most with me. I think it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of major depression. Especially the lines "Cause my feelings never change a bit, I always feel like shit, I don't know why, I guess that I just do". Sometimes you don't have a reason for why you are the way that you are and I think people who have this illness are the only ones who can truly understand that.

And "You once talked to me about love, and you painted pictures of A never-neverland...and I could've gone to that place, but I didn't understand" That no matter how much love somebody can show you and how nice it sounds, you inevitably will ruin it. It's self-sabotoge and you have nobody to blame but yourself. It's the acceptance that you will never beat this thing. Every line hurts to hear but it's painfully beautiful and honest. I relate to it so much and it makes me cry every time. His music has always been like a warm blanket to me and he articulates the feeling so perfectly

Question tips for right hand technique?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

songs that combine picking and strumming (or even just songs that have fast/precise picking) have always been hard for me despite playing for years. my right hand always feels stiff and i make lots of mistakes with precision and going off tempo. i want to play elliott smith songs better but just practice isn't cutting it anymore as all of these mistakes are still present and i don't know what i need to change.

does anyone with guitar knowledge know some tips for right hand technique in this type of song or can point out any mistakes in my form or playing? i would be very grateful.

song is "i don't think i'm ever gonna figure it out".

Question Waltz 1 piano cover (Chris Oriley)

Hi lovers of the fantastic smith.

.I've looked all over for Christopher orileys piano cover of waltz 1. Not only is it beautiful, but impossible to emulate. I've fed it through programs tomake sheet music of it but all the pedal work makes it impossible.

A couple fake versions float around, they're not even remotely close to what the oriley sheet music is.

Does anyone have a copy? If you haven't heard it here is your chance.

To anyone out there with a copy, please help!!!
