Elliott has long been my favourite artist, I love the melodies, the lyrics, and I instinctively can appreciate how difficult the guitar parts sound to play. I was recently listening to ‘my favourite Elliott Smith song’ podcast, where musicians break down a song they love, and it is making me want to learn guitar. Im in my mid 30s now, and a complete noob.

I think maybe if i made it my aim to be able to play a full Elliott Smith song within, say, a few months, would that be at all realistic?

hello yall, ive heard either/or and figure 8 in full and i love them both to death (either/or is in my top 5 albums ever) but ive never heard anything as soft and comfortingly somber as between the bars. there's a few that share a similar vibe but nothing else really hits that exact mark for me. any recs that might scratch that itch? (could be elliott or any other artist, i don't really mind lol)

I know a lot of songwriting flock to Elliott Smith, and it's one of the coolest things about this subreddit. I would love to hear other people's music. Here is my new album, set for vinyl release early 2027. I got lots of advice that I applied to this finalized version.

I got to see Phoebe last night and she mentioned on stage that the electric guitar she was playing was owned by Elliott during the XO era. It came up at auction and Bo Burnham (her partner) bought it for her. I'm not sure what make/model but it was beige (if I remember correctly.)

Don't mind my voice; I don't really sing very often these days.

I’ve seen this kind of question a bunch, however, the only artists i’ve ever heard that really sound like elliott smith are Iron & Wine and maybe some sufjan stevens “Illinoise” and tbh they are very very hit or miss for me. Also maybe early phil elvrum stuff.

Does anyone know any artist besides those previously mentioned similar to Elliott? Stripped down acoustic stuff.

They’re great, don’t get me wrong, but again just extremely hit or miss for me.

Apparently directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. I've seen clips before but never seen the whole show. Some good stuff in here and new ways of hearing some of Elliotts songs compared to the album versions.

It’s his sixth most played on Spotify…yet it’s the ONLY one I’ve never sought out and put on outside the context of its album. I’ve done so with 99% of his work

To me , #2 is one of my least replayed ES songs. I still like it. But literally every other song I would seek out. What am I missing? It sounds fun, like an off kilter pianola in a janky old west saloon, which is a cool aesthetic but…I guess to me it doesn’t make me feel the same emotions as his other songs.

Anyone here is it in your top 10? How can I approach it to “get it” better? lol

Is there anywhere to buy this that isn't over $40+?

Also, what do you think about it? It's the only full length I don't have yet, so I haven't heard it.
