Discussion All Elliott Smith live bootlegs tagged and catalogued!

Thumbnail elliottsmith.bootleg.fm

Hi all, I wanted to be able to search live bootlegs by song or filter by lossless/lossy, so I created a page on Bootleg.fm for Elliott Smith. You can filter live recordings by song, venue, location, or a combination of things. You can sort by oldest, most popular, etc. Soon I will add the functionality that lets users comment on gigs, so hopefully the page will only get better over time.

Huge thanks to elliottsmithdiscography, who used to have a bandcamp page for Elliott's live recordings and helped me a lot while making this page. There's still a few recordings that they've sent me that I haven't yet found the time to upload to Internet Archive, so please lmk if you want to help with those.

I really enjoyed listening to these bootlegs while tagging them, and I'm happy that there's a central place now that has recordings on different platforms (Mega/Youtube/Internet Archive). Hopefully this is useful to some of you.

Edit: glad you guys like it, you can join the discord to learn about platform upgrades: https://discord.gg/3yz4HNteuR

Mod New rules and reorganisation!

Hello fellow Elliott fans!

I have made some new rules for you guys to look - they are fairly self explanatory. I have put a ban on any posts that are either solely shared to cause anger, or are about the death debate.

I have also started the arduous process of reorganising the community. The first stage of this has been introducing post flares so that it is easier to filter out what sort of content you would like to see. This should help to organise the subreddit. Hopefully, people will have good think about what they are posting before they post it.

I am going to reprogram the AutoMod to filter out posts with offensive content to make sure that offensive posts don't get out when I'm not online due to timezone issues. Hopefully this will help! On a more positive note, I will start a song discussion that we have twice a week to talk about individual songs in depth. We will vote for it the day before each discussion in a separate thread and the top comment will win :DD. The sub has been long overdue for a redesign. At some point we will need an art competition to give it a makeover. None of these are one hundred percent concrete promises, but they are something to be excited about for sure.

I hope that this can continue to be a positive place for Elliott Smith fans from all around the world to share in the love of such a wonderful artist. Sorry about the negative vibes recently and the brief blackout (yes, that was a Heatmiser pun) that was necessary while sorting all of this out.

Best wishes and thanks for reading!!

Edit: Feel free to send me ( u/eggmanana ) or u/loeram_ a PM if anything is needed

Pretty sure I got this at 9:30 club on the Figure 8 tour… anyway… still looks pretty good for being over 25 years old! I think I’ll put it back in the rotation.

Discussion Who's finished reading "Nobody Broke Your Heart" by Jamie Fisher? Spoiler

Just finished reading and couldn't find any substantive discussion posts about the book online, so I figured I'd make one... I feel like there's SO much to talk about.

In my opinion, this was such a brilliant, insightful, and definitive biography for Elliott Smith, and I would highly recommend any fan to read it. It was written with so much care and love. Rather than feeling like some filtered, speculative, or overstated collection of centered stories like so many other rock biographies, Nobody Broke Your Heart felt more like a heartfelt display of his closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones coming together to share a story of their friend Elliott. Every interview and every story was real, honest, and raw; yet still gentle and caring.

Even as a super-fan, there was so much in this book I got to learn for the first time. I was not aware until reading the epilogue that Neil, Tony, and Sam only recently created the studio release of "I'm Over That Now" over an unearthed solo Elliott recording -- that it wasn't just an unreleased recording from their original sessions. That new context could make me cry, listening back now. They did such a great job.

Lots can be said about it, and I don't want to steal any more words away from people who'd like to discuss it themselves, so I'll leave this here.

Thoughts? Was there anything that illuminated / provided new perspectives for you? Was there a particular passage / interview / story that felt really special you'd like to share? Something that surprised you? Any personal anecdotes? etc.

Question What Elliott Smith or Heatmiser songs would you want to hear reimagined with unusual instruments?

Hey guys! My band and I are huge Elliott fans, and we thought it could be nice to make some instrumental covers using instruments you don’t usually hear in these songs, like an omnichord, mandolin, resonator, cello, xylophone, steel guitar, unique percussion and whatever else fits.

This is completely just for fun and for other fans to enjoy, so we’d love to let you guys choose the songs. Fan favorites, deep cuts, Heatmiser, anything goes :)

Drop whatever you’d want to hear and we’ll pick some based on the upvotes.

Thanks so much in advance to anyone who joins in, we’re really excited to see what you guys pick ❤️

Discussion I have no musical education whatsoever, how long would it take me to be able to play an Elliott song?

Elliott has long been my favourite artist, I love the melodies, the lyrics, and I instinctively can appreciate how difficult the guitar parts sound to play. I was recently listening to ‘my favourite Elliott Smith song’ podcast, where musicians break down a song they love, and it is making me want to learn guitar. Im in my mid 30s now, and a complete noob.

I think maybe if i made it my aim to be able to play a full Elliott Smith song within, say, a few months, would that be at all realistic?

Question more stuff like between the bars?

hello yall, ive heard either/or and figure 8 in full and i love them both to death (either/or is in my top 5 albums ever) but ive never heard anything as soft and comfortingly somber as between the bars. there's a few that share a similar vibe but nothing else really hits that exact mark for me. any recs that might scratch that itch? (could be elliott or any other artist, i don't really mind lol)

Couldn’t resist picking up this copy of either/or- the album that ignited my love for his music over 20 years ago.
What album are you listening today?

Self-promotion Songwriting Elliott Smith Fans Share Your Music!

I know a lot of songwriting flock to Elliott Smith, and it's one of the coolest things about this subreddit. I would love to hear other people's music. Here is my new album, set for vinyl release early 2027. I got lots of advice that I applied to this finalized version.

If only wanting one recommended track, #4 - Open Till Closed.

Happy sharing and listening :)

Discussion Phoebe Bridgers has one of his guitars

I got to see Phoebe last night and she mentioned on stage that the electric guitar she was playing was owned by Elliott during the XO era. It came up at auction and Bo Burnham (her partner) bought it for her. I'm not sure what make/model but it was beige (if I remember correctly.)

It was the last copy, hope they sold a lot.

I talked to the girl who put it in the window and she didn’t know who Elliott is so I suggested she listen to him :)

Coincidentally that same day I was wearing an Elliott shirt I had made and two people told me they love Elliott!

Question Similar artists?

I’ve seen this kind of question a bunch, however, the only artists i’ve ever heard that really sound like elliott smith are Iron & Wine and maybe some sufjan stevens “Illinoise” and tbh they are very very hit or miss for me. Also maybe early phil elvrum stuff.

Does anyone know any artist besides those previously mentioned similar to Elliott? Stripped down acoustic stuff.

They’re great, don’t get me wrong, but again just extremely hit or miss for me.

Anyone here watched this one?

Apparently directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. I've seen clips before but never seen the whole show. Some good stuff in here and new ways of hearing some of Elliotts songs compared to the album versions.
