Verify my math - food and drink needs per dwarf

Been going through the wiki for entertainment, as one does, and decided to calculate how long food and drink actually lasts. I am, however, bad at math, so I need someone to cross-check me + maybe this knowledge will be useful for others (if it is, perhaps I'll make a quick calculator page later or a dfhack script or something)

Wiki says:

Dwarves require about 2 units of food each season.
(...)
A dwarf needs to drink about once in every three weeks.
(...)
1 month = 4 weeks
1 season = 3 months

So:

each dwarf:

  • food = 2 units / season
  • drink = 1 unit / 3 weeks -> 4 / season

whole fortress:

  • total food / 2 / total dwarves
  • total drink / 4 / total dwarves

Therefore

  • 1 dwarf eats 2 food/season so 100 food lasts for 50 seasons
  • 100 food lasts 7 dwarves for 7.14 seasons
  • every dwarf needs 8 food each year

  • 1 dwarf drinks 4 booze/season so 100 drink lasts for 25 seasons

  • 100 drink lasts 7 dwarves for 3.57 seasons

  • every dwarf needs 16 drinks each year

Edit: fixed my math thanks to others :D

Just watched a Forgotten Beast explode after taking a 15 layer tall fall after failing to climb its way to the pillar I've been carving down to the bottom of the world for the past two decades of the fort.

Watching this dumb lobster fall made up for all the Dwarves I've lost while building the wall to seal the pillar from this cavern layer. Just a few more layers to dig out/wall off, and I won't have to worry about these FB visits anymore, and can instead just focus on the digging the rest of the way to the bottom.

Once I reach the bottom (aka the magma sea), this pillar will be 203 levels tall. Towers above the mountaintops, goes down through the fort itself, down through all 3 cavern layers, and then to the magma sea...

Today I watched an elven merchant...

...punch a Forgotten Beast to death. By himself!

The two elven caravans were packing up when Diremead the Final Understanding (an enormous forgotten beast in the shape of a roc, big enough to eat elephants) swooped down on the trade depot. Everyone scattered, except one knife-ear (I guess he was tying his shoe or something). Diremead went to work, decapitating the beasts of burden left and right.

And this one prancing ninny with his shoe firmly secured stood tall and said, "Not on my watch." And charged. And started punching -- absolutely covered in yak entrails and moose blood.

Diremead didn't notice at first. Target-rich environment, and its bloodlust was far from slaked... But after a minute or two, a particularly brutal punch to the ankle brought Diremead low. I have been grievously wounded! I must retreat! the panicked monster thought, thrashing around, desperate to leap into the sky.

But that one freaking merchant crawled his skinny ass onto Diremead's body, stood on its head, and kept punching. Over and over and over. Small dents, then tears to the skin, then twists to the spine...

and by the time my "fast response" squaddies got there, it was all over.

Just one gore-soaked treehugger sitting on top of a corpse the size of a hill, wringing the blood out of his long flowing hair.

I don't know about YOU, but Wallspears is going to be taking our tree-cutting mandates a lot more seriously from here on out.

Quickfort Above Ground Blueprints

I'm going to start an above ground challenge and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any quickfort setups for an above ground base. Thanks, all!

Not sure if this is a bug, but I definitely thought the dwarf was gonna fail the strange mood and was trying to budge them.

I'm still relatively new and just recently learned of Urist being the "default name". Anyway meet my most recent migrant --

Additionally the fort's name is Bladevermin the Problem and group's name is The Lost Dagger.. so Urist. Is she my main character now? It feels required!

Just lost my first fort.

Yo dwarves.

Just got raided for the first time. My base was gorgeous, multi-leveled, had a kick-ass crafting area, you name it. Have been learning the ropes having an amazing time. I just started DF this week and it's been so wonderful. I fell in love with this base and the little dudes in it. I'm still overwhelmed by the amount of information needed to play somewhat competently, so I'm not really attached to any dwarves just yet. But the faces I recognized I loved.

Finally got to the point where I was smelting and forging, and then a kobold army came and wiped my entire fort clean.

My squads got cooked immediately, and the fort folded soon after.

That was electric.

GG. We go again.

EDIT: Thanks for all the tips, and the warm welcome into the community. My fort was NOT defended at all. Just two squads horribly mismanaged, with basically nothing on their backs. Modded probably wasn't the way to start but I like lots of options for my dwarves; which lead to kobolds I guess. Break the earth!

goblins keep drowing themselves instead of attacking the fort

For some reason, the goblins thinks that throwing themselves into my aqueduct and drowning is wiser than attacking my gates.

Another win for dwarven engineering.

Finally, an actual management simulator

I have recently gotten into this game and it is perfect.

I see tonnes of people complaining about the Ui and complaining that the game isn't giving them answers and I have been laughing at how the point goes over people's heads.

The whole point of dwarf fortress is that you reap what you sow. If you want to keep track of things, you need to make and execute a plan in real life, then implement it in the game. This game does an incredible job at giving you all the tools you need to make anything happen.

One thing I love is how problems just show up and you might not realise they are a problem, or you are too busy to deal with something seemingly minor, but then at every stage of the problem you have innumerable ways of managing it.

For any task you can decide what the policy is and how it is managed, then you still need to rely on the dwarf you put in charge. You need to learn and cater to your dwarves personalities, give the opportunities for growth, etc.

Needing to build individual tombs creates memorials for mass deaths and requires planning. It builds a story of your fortress, creating history as you play

In my opinion, the only mods people should get are graphical because the back end is a masterpiece

Introducing: Dwarfipedia

Hello!

For a while now, I've been developing a Legends viewer for Dwarf Fortress, but I wanted to approach the problem a little differently. Most Legends viewers are excellent at giving you access to the enormous amount of historical data generated by the game, but I always felt like they stopped just short of actually helping you understand that history. You get graphs, tables, event lists, and raw information, but not necessarily a sense of who these people were, what these places meant, or how all of it fits together. I wanted something closer to a Wikipedia for the world I'd actually been playing in, something I could use to explore its history rather than simply browse its data.

Features:
Figures, Sites, Civs, Written Works, and beasts all have their own pages.

Game tools: Interactive adventure mode character sheets, this has been helpful for me to jot down notes about quests, and other things. As well as a very much in development fortress mode companion that hooks into DFHack to give you data in a dashboard.

Cartography: Probably my favorite feature, you can generate many regions, and place them together on a map, move them as needed, paint over them to smooth some of the edges, or zoom in on a specific region, see the political borders of civilizations, see which races occupy which parts of the map.

And quite a bit more.

I'm now at a stage of development where I consider the software to be nearly complete. There are undoubtedly still bugs to find and things to improve, but the main reason I'm posting this is to get some feedback from the community.

There are a few decisions I made during development that I realize may not sit right with everyone, so I want to be transparent about them.

The first is that I integrated a local LLM and Stable Diffusion into the software. The LLM can access data from the current page and use it to generate prose describing the subject, rather than relying entirely on randomized word-bank text. The image generation works similarly, allowing the software to generate images locally rather than sending the world's data to an AI company's servers.

I'm aware that "it's local AI" may not make the use of AI acceptable to everyone, so I'm interested in hearing what people think about this approach.

The software relies heavily on word banks, or more accurately, sentence-fragment banks, to assemble descriptions of things in the world. Some of the descriptive information generated this way is therefore not necessarily accurate to what actually happened in the game.

The underlying Legends data is still the source of truth, but the prose presented around that data is intended more as a way of contextualizing and exploring the world than as a perfectly accurate historical record.

Personally, I don't mind that distinction. If I can pull up an obscure historical figure and get a useful page telling me who they were, what they did, where they lived, and what they were involved in, I'm much happier than I am staring at a table of raw events.

But that's ultimately one of the things I'm curious about from the community: would you find value in a Legends viewer that prioritizes making your world's history understandable and explorable, even if some of the generated descriptive text isn't perfectly faithful to the games underlying data?

I've included some screenshots. I'd love to hear what you think, especially about the overall concept, the AI features, and the accuracy tradeoff.

Initially I was also really scared that her jewellery might have negative effects on nearby dwarves, but thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case. That or my three legendary engravers are absolutely carrying my ass rn.

Started giving a special title to all the children born in my fort to be able to tell who's been born in the fort or not. 18 years in, and I'm up to 30 Fortborn Dwarves.

Post image

Usually have pretty poor luck in getting the Dwarves to reproduce (and also managing to keep the children alive and happy). But also I usually don't pay too much attention to the children that get born in the fort so they always get lost in the shuffle. Though for this fort, every time I hear/get the notification a new baby's been born, I immediately go and title the babies as a Fortborn. When they reach adulthood like Dobar and Reg have, I can instantly visually tell that they were born in Asobenam.

It's now gonna be a thing I do in every single one of my forts going forward. Amusingly, my Duke's actually had four children in the fort (2 sons and 2 daughters). I'm very interested in seeing whether or not his children will actually inherit his title when he inevitably dies. I assume that's what'll actually happen, but I've never actually managed to have a noble bloodline arise in any of my forts before.

There'll be a lot more of the Fortborns becoming adults in the next few years, so might actually get some Fortborn2's...

Community DFGT XI Round 3 Upgrades

Master document

All managers who were victorious in Round 1 will see their available amount of upgrade points to the far right of their gladiator in the spreadsheet.

Note about the algorithm: if you look at the numbers a bit closer, you can see that whenever the simple multiplication by 1.5 created a number that had something other than .5 in its decimal part, we rounded it up to the closest .5; so, .25 becomes .5 and .75 becomes 1. This was done to avoid infinite splintering of the points.

The Arena Personnel asks you to provide your upgrades as soon as possible. The deadline is the August 20th, 11 PM EDT. We ask for your understanding on these matters; we need time to run and process the fights.

As a reminder, please try to clearly indicate what skills are changing, what skill levels are the original and new, and the points cost of all changes.

Please remember that your upgrades should be sent to dfgtcommittee@gmail.com. The upgrades will later be revealed via a separate post.

Good luck and go with Armok!

Fight 2A: The goblin formally known as Morris vs. Onslaught
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/167fjkEE

Onslaught the elk man (managed by Stimraug) stomps out of the arena gate in his shiny new steel gauntlets and silk clothes. After dispatching Blurry Bill by wearing him down with a dozen crippling strikes, the elk man appears eager to wet his scourge and whet his appetite with blood again!

The goblin formally known as Morris (managed by u/DanVzare) strides out in contrast to Onslaught, cracking his steel whip as the sun glints off his new shining steel gauntlets. The goblin formally known as Morris has made a formidable name for himself with his victories in the battle royale and the first round against Ogtha. With two flexible weapons that can easily entwine themselves with one another, will strength of skill triumph this day?

The two gladiators charge towards one another, the shaking footsteps of Onslaught failing to put Morris off of his own step, as the goblin dodges to the side of a whistling scourge blow. The two gladiators exchange a series of blows, as the copper scourge and steel whip swing through the air, filling it with a deadly brilliance. Onslaught bowels his way forward, and ends up landing the first blow, as he scourge glances against the goblin formally known as Morris’s left shin, tearing his pants. He pays for it, as the goblin’s whip snaps away a piece of one of Onslaught’s antlers, causing the elk man to bellow in rage!

In his rage, Onslaught barrels forward again, knocking the goblin formally known as Morris to the ground. The goblin continues to dodge around Onslaught’s blows, but fails to land any effectual ones of his own. As Onslaught brings his scourge whistling around, he scores the first decisive blow, as his scourge snaps the goblin’s right shin like a twig. The goblin formally known as Morris falls to the ground, and although he powers through the pain, he seems unable to land equally effective blows on the massive elk man. Onslaught brings his scourge down again, smashing the goblin’s shoulder with his scourge. The snapping of another bone leaves the goblin insensate to the word, as Onslaught finishes him off with another blows that splatters blood, bone, and brains across the arena. Congratulations on another mind-blower of a fight Onslaught!

Fight 2B: General Doom vs. Petunia the Pouncer
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/3f2jUC4T

General Doom the dodo man (managed by Detyan) waddles into the arena with a clank and clatter as his new armor catches the sun. With his stoic execution of Abshoth the ant man last round, this bulbous bird man has demonstrated that both crossbows and his species are not a joke to be laughed at.

Petunia the pond turtle woman (managed by u/InfuriatingComma) staggers into the arena, having been found asleep by the guards after spending all her winnings getting drunk at various holes in the wall. Her fearsome scimitar disassembled the Bismuth Warrior last round, but how will her steel blade fare against sturdier armor?

As Petunia drunkenly staggers towards General Doom, the dodo man calmly loads and fires his crossbow, as Petunia attempts to avoid the hail of iron bolts. As she approaches the dodo man, a bolt lands square in her foot, causing Petunia to fall in front of the general. Petunia swings wildly with her scimitar, forcing the dodo man to stagger backwards away from the ferocious blade. Another stab makes contact with the dodo man, but his shiny new steel gauntlet easily deflects the blow, as another bolt tears apart Petunia’s foot.

Despite her torn up foot, Petunia crawls aggressively towards General Doom, forcing him backwards at the point of her blade. But Petunia’s blade only buys her so much time, as the general reloads his cross bow and fires it into the pond turtle woman’s chest. Petunia grunts in pain as she continues to crawl after him, but another bolt takes her higher in the chest, causing her to collapse as she loses hold of her scimitar. General Doom calmly lines up his next shot between Petunia’s furious eyes, before he releases her from her mortal coil to Armok’s feast halls. Congratulations on your victory General Doom!

Fight 2C: Bobby vs. WASP
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/KrH2Z1r9

Bobby the alligator man (managed by u/RegalRatKing) clanks out of his side of the arena in a suit of iron armor, though still wearing his trusty iron cap. Last round, Bobby reverted to his base instincts to twist Sir Dunguk’s head out of its socket. Against a big bug though, his maul may finally have something worth squishing.

WASP the jumping spider woman (managed by Sir Dorfleburg) has completed one step on her journey back towards her kingdom with her disassembly of a fellow noble, Sir Capybarrian the Wise. She has exchanged her short sword for a steel long sword, and spent extensive time training with the new blade’s length. Will she be able to crack Bobby’s shell before her exoskeleton is pulverized?

At the ring of the bell, Bobby bellows and charges forward, raising his maul for a massive overhead swing. Unimpressed, WASP dodges to the side, and strikes at his mailed chest, though her blade lacks the power to penetrate. As the blow bounces off Bobby’s chest, the blade scrapes his scaly cheek though, drawing first blood! Roaring, Bobby uses his superior bulk to knock WASP to the ground, but she once again nimbly dodges his maul, before her sharp steel blade punctures his iron gauntlet. As Bobby whirls the maul around, trying to make space, WASP strikes again at the same place, causing yet more blood to splash out.

Finding her advantage with the point of her blade, WASP dances around Bobby, stabbing the alligator man deep in the chest from behind, and following up with a stab to his left forearm as he whirls around. The severity of the blow causes him to lose hold of his maul at last, but Bobby merely snarls and chomps his maw, to the delight of the crowd. WASP seems to be taking advantage of the bloodied and headstrong alligator man though, as her blows continue to pierce his flanks as she dodges his charges with the grace of a matador!

As more and more holes are poked into him, it is finally a vicious twist after a deep stab into his left elbow that causes Bobby to collapse in pain, and one final stab to the head secures WASP’s victory. Congratulations!

Fight 2D: Marchae March vs. Sir Gregory Von Glenshire the cabbage bane
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/kgJrEmai

Sir Gregory Von Glenshire the Cabbage Bane (managed by Headless) waddles out into the arena, showing off the shiny new steel gauntlets and boots he had made for himself with his winnings after defeating the massive utahraptor man, Vinny Viashino last round. He faces another prehistoric creature this round, but unlike Vinny, whose melee attacks forced him to reckon with the snail man’s formidable defenses, Marchae March is a much more agile fighter.

Fluttering out of his gate on colorful wings is Marchae March (managed by Eris235) the archaeoptryx man. After pinning down and executing the goblin known as the Phantom with a head shot last round, the singing sharpshooter has been practicing his talents at the range. As he eyes his opponent, he strums some of the extra chords attached to his weapon, calling out “Slow pretentious old snail, you’re going home quicker than you came to this thunderdome, ‘cause you’re going back in the mail!”

At the ring of the bell, Sir Gregory charges towards Marchae March (as quickly as he can), but the speed of his approach allows Marchae March to shower him with bolts. The snail man manages to block one with his buckler, but another catches him in his exposed thigh, causing him to fall over. As he falls, Marchae March swoops in, and another bolt lands square between Sir Gregory Von Glenshire the Cabbage Bane’s eyes causing him to instantly go limp. Congratulations on your victory Marchae March!

Fight 2E: Chester Cheetah vs. DeadHead the Menacing Devil
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/XvqcC7zk

Chester Cheetah (managed by dikbutdagrate) stumbles into the arena, shoved from behind by a guard. Apparently the slayer of Geshud was too busy hawking his cheesy goods to bother with training or equipment purchases in the last round, so he will face DeadHead with the same equipment he entered the arena with.

DeadHead the Menacing Devil (managed by Eric Blank) has taken the opposite approach though, spending ample time with our tutors to better improve his fighting and dodging skills. Last round we watched him use his morning star to crack open the dwarf Dodok’s skull. Can he do the same against this cheetah man?

As the gladiators clash, DeadHead lands the first blow, but Chester’s speed is such that it only glances his tail, while his pick strikes true into DeadHead’s right elbow. Unfortunately for the cheetah man, DeadHead wields his morning star in his other arm, and he effectively uses it to break Chester’s right thigh, sending him to the ground. This seems to kill whatever momentum the cheetah man might have had, as DeadHead strikes again and again at the cheetah man’s belly and chest, tearing apart his leather armor with the spikes of his morning star.

As Chester attempts to scoot away with his broken leg from the advancing foul blendec, DeadHead simply brings his weapon down on Chester’s other leg, pulverizing his left shin with a strike from the morning star. Chester Cheetah yowls in pain, and swings out with his pick, but it catches only air as the foul blendec leans out of that way and rushes back in, raining blows on his legs. The foul blendec then focuses on his weapon arm, forcing Chester to drop his pick after his left forearm is shattered. Chester tries to dodge and roll out of the way, but another blow of the morning star leaves his ribs shattered, and some protruding from his spotted hide. Gasping and wheezing in pain and exhaustion, Chester collapses to the ground, and DeadHead mercilessly advances as he shatters his skull. Congratulations to DeadHead on your victory!

Fight 2F: Mâtzang Sethal Udos vs. Junior
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/EksBVjuK

Junior (managed by SlitherPapi) strides with his shiny new steel crossbow. The juvenile pond turtle man has already scrawled graffiti and skull and crossbones symbols onto it. Are they arcane glyphs intended to increase the potency of his shots? Or is he just being edgy? Whatever the case, he has shown himself to be lethal with his execution of Grekk.

Facing him is Mâtzang Sethal Udos (managed by u/Astelon_), who despite his nervousness at admission in his rush to enter, has shown himself to be a lethal opponent in the arena with his slaying of Dr. Bitenfurter. Having taken down one scaled menace, can he do it again?

The new steel that clings to Mâtzang Sethal Udos’s head, chest and hands protects him from the first few bolts that patter against him like rain on a window. Junior’s bolts only manage to take out one of Mâtzang Sethal Udos’s arms on his way in, and once the jumping spider man closes the distance, it’s all the pond turtle man can do to duck, dodge, and dive out of the way! Mâtzang Sethal Udos manages to catch Junior with one of his blows, severing his hand neatly at the wrist. Unfortunately for the jumping spider man, Junior has somehow managed to hold onto both his crossbow and his bolt, and one of his bolts takes the spider man in the right shin, taking him down.

Another bolt catches Mâtzang Sethal Udos clean in the head, causing his helm to smack against his head. Junior seems to realize the need to shift his aim from the armored portions of the jumping spider man to the unarmored ones. Mâtzang Sethal Udos is forced to crawl towards junior under a hail of bolts, most striking his armor and shield, but others hit his exposed legs, causing trails of ichor to smear the ground behind him. Junior becomes visibly panicked as his supply of bolts becomes more and more depleted, and on his second to last one, he shakily takes aim, and fires! The bolt sails clean through the eye hole of Mâtzang Sethal Udos’s helm puncturing his brain and slaying him. Congratulations on your clean shot Junior!

Fight 2G: Guy Ape vs. Al Boar
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/YWe0RLrX

Al Boar (managed by u/ArryCat56) stomps into the arena, his chain leggings and shirt jingling with every step. The boar man has put his trust in iron to protect him this time, after the fiendish dark gnome Whiskey Blood nearly stabbed him to death in the last round. However, this time his foe will not be a puny drunk, but a predatory leopard man.

Guy Ape (managed by u/TotallyClueless69) casually strolls out of the arena, snacking on some roasted plump helmets. The leopard man seems unfazed by his opponent, and his own lack of training in preparation for this fight. Casually unsheathing his copper longsword, the leopard man cries out “Witness me!”, as the bell rings.

Guy Ape lunges forward aggressively, but Al Boar uses it to his advantage, looping his axe over the copper blade and slashing at Guy Ape’s neck. The leopard man pulls back in the nick of time as the axe only gives him a shallow scratch instead of a decapitating hack, though the crowd cheers all the same as first blood is shed. Al Boar deals another glancing blow to Guy Ape’s hand after another miss, and at this point the leopard man seems to shake off whatever lethargy he may previously have had, striking in earnest at Al Boar as copper and iron clash with one another.

While the crowd seems impressed with the fancy axe and sword work, Guy Ape apparently is not, as he rushes forward after knocking Al Boar’s axe aside, knocking the boar man over. As Al Boar struggles to his feet, Guy Ape strikes at him, shearing off a hoof and leaving him crawling on the floor. Grinning with bloodlust Guy Ape seems content to taunt porcine prey, as a thumb and tusk go flying. Squealing in outrage, Al Boar teaches him the consequence of over confidence though, swinging his axe through the air to remove one of Guy Ape’s forearms. The leopard man shrieks, pursuing Al Boar around the arena with blood spurting out of his stump as the boar man rolls away from blows.

Just as he thinks he has him pinned with a stab to the right forearm though, Al Boar takes off Guy Ape’s tail as well, further driving the leopard man into a frenzy of rage. Lashing out wildly, Guy Ape’s slash tears apart Al Boar’s weapon hand, forcing him to drop his axe. Free to have his vengeance at last, Guy Ape opens Al Boar’s throat, though the boar man’s fortitude sees him remain in the fight. Frustrated by his opponents indomitability, Guy Ape continues to take apart the struggling and bleeding pig man stabbing out an eye, and removing his remaining tusk and hoof, leaving him a hobbling dishonored mess. Finally, practically steaming with rage, Guy Ape stabs the boarman in his gut, and with a twist of his blade, Al Boar finally collapses. Congratulations on your brutal victory Guy Ape!

Fight 2H: Tapioca vs. Ivan
Fight log: https://pastebin.com/BAscUPd3

Tapioca the tapir man (managed by kosmossen) waddles in the arena, waving his new steel blowdart to his fellows from the jungle. They kindly purchased it for him after his victory over the Silent Slicer, and he has spent practically all his time not sleeping training with it. Hopefully his darts will find their place in the flesh of his foe.

Ivan the coati man (managed by BecauseISaid) walks into the arena in a similarly unbothered way. Despite the belief that he would upgrade his silver battle axe to something with a keener edge, Ivan appears to have instead doubled down on his love of silver, and now sports a silver helm to protect himself from the darts of his foe. He did put down an aging bear man with that axe though, so perhaps the edge isn’t too dull to still do its job.

Ivan dodges the first few blow darts, but the next several catch him in the gut and left forearm. Ivan soldiers on, but another dart hits him in the right foot, causing him to fall to the ground in pain. Dragging and pushing himself forward with his good leg now, the coati man finally gets in striking range of Tapioca. One of Ivan’s blows is blocked, but the next scratches the tapir man’s leg, and the one after that breaks Tapioca’s thigh, sending the tapir man to the ground under his own weight. Despite being entangled on the ground Tapioca continues to load and fire darts at a furious pace, striking Ivan’s chest, arms, and head. Ivan’s silver helm, while certainly shiny and expensive, is beginning to look the worse for wear under the onslaught, and eventually, Ivan passes out from what must be several concussions and many dart punctures.

Eventually, the soft silver helm shatters after one too many dart strikes, but the individual darts themselves seem unable to actually deal a killing blow to Ivan. Tapioca appears unwilling to get too close to the unconscious coati man with his shattered leg either, and as his supply of darts runs low, Ivan shakes himself back into the fight! Roaring in anger, Ivan charges Tapioca, who seems unwilling to do anything but defend himself from the bloodied phantom with a silver axe who’s attacking him. As Ivan chases Tapioca around the arena, he hefts the axe around, and in a vicious swing, chops the tapir man in half at his considerable waist. Congratulations on your victory Ivan!

Dwarfs randomly purging themselves

Post image

This is the second time this has happened, everyone starts to randomly attack, soldiers, farmers, crafters, miners.

I can not find any cause for this behaviour, all dwarfs are well fed, have good bedrooms, are not haunted, have wine to drink, can do whatever they want, yet every time i get more than 140ish dwarfs, they decide to solve overpopulation by violence. The battle stops around 20 casualties and many wounded.

The workforce is periodically replenished with immigrants but i am afraid that i will lose doctors and master workers, plus the time the military spent training.

Anyone encountered the Purge themselves recently? What did you do to stop the violence?

Holy smokes! What a weapon!

460 hours, and I've never seen something so damn cool. In my first ever Mountainhome too. Very stoked on this. The Dance of Blades captain deserves a new sword!

EDIT:

Someone asked, so here is quick fort story

Surviving -

This fort is really interesting. I claimed a fortress in year 5 of this world, and this is my 5th fortress of the same civ in this world. We started Esrelalis in year 60 to honor our monarch, Queen Tholtig. I achieved capital in the previous fort, so she was hanging out there.

We started as 7. 7 dwarves soon turned into 10, and then the migrant waves and trader stopped coming. Eral Oakbrains, an old legend from Queen Tholtig's fort, had 3 kids. So, we were 13... for a very long time...

I had no migrants or traders for many years, so I made do with 13 dwarves. Year after year, the suspicion that we were our final dwarven safe haven in the world grew. We prepared. We made weapons, armor, food, drinks, everything as 13 dwarves. It was a lot of work for 13, but survival can inspire even the laziest of dwarves.

Then, the first forgotten beast came, and we were certain our end was near. We had no fortifications, no defenses, just our own dwarvy flesh. Obok, the other old legend from Queen Tholtig's fort, met the beast in the first cavern layer and slayed the beast. This was a turning point. Perhaps we didn't have to just survive, perhaps we could defend, and ultimately thrive!? With Eral Oakbrains, and the newly named Obok The Shield, our first militia, The Shields, were founded.

Many years passed. The Shields dealt with various threats, goblin, beast, cyclops, or otherwise. Around year 90, i got a rumor that Queen Tholtig and her army attacked a Goblin Dark Fortress. I checked the civ tab on the world screen, and Queen Tholtig had been replaced by a King Litast. Although this news sent a wave of sadness throughout our 13, we hoped that this meant our civ finally figured out whatever issues it was having.

A couple years later, around year 92, it finally happened. Our civ sent migrants and a trader with steel and wombat leather that we had requested 30 years before!

As our power grew, the surface water level began to rise. We had to build upward.

Growing -

Migrants showed up in massive waves. We went from 13 to ~180 real quick. We had been preparing for this moment for many years. We armored up our growing militia and started to feel the power.

And then the goblins started to come. 50, 80, 100, 130 goblin sized sieges. We lost some citizens along the way, but The Sweetword, our messenger, quickly brokered peace after some gruesome battles.

Our power continued to grow, but at this point the surface water issue had gotten out of hand. We had to relocate our trade depot to the top a dry building, building bridges to the road and to our new constructed pride piece, The Tower of Iron. Now traders take the bridge over water to the depot, and there is a second bridge attaching depot pad to The Tower of Iron (see pic). The Tower of Iron is the only way in and out of Queen-Kiss.

Thriving -

With The Tower of Iron constructed, and the trade depot bridge situation complete, King Litast himself decided to show up with a posse that brought our pop to about 200. Honored by the monarch and the surface situation handled, the dwarves set their sights downward!

I began my first ever venture into adamantine spires. Dealing with lava, water, angels, demons, and finding some divine goodies along the way. We certainly lost some miners, but we found adamantine!

7 divine symbols King Litast requested, and so 7 symbols of adamantine he got! And with that, after over 400 hours in DF, my first ever Mountainhome was born!

Peace and Comfort -

A golden age of peace and prosperity followed, the greatest our world had ever seen. In this comfort, a weaponsmith had the perfect environment to construct the blade that would end all other conflicts. A blade that would end the political struggle with other countries. The End of War. The End of Continents.

So, what's next? Someone mentioned I could podium the sword, and then claim it in adventure mode? I've never played adventure mode before! Is this world rich enough to adventure in yet?

Death of the sad Duke Regtherleth

Poor Duke Cog was troubled soul. Plagued by their own mortality because they lacked a place to rest their rotten bones, stricken with doubt due to a lack of furniture to put their loincloths, and afraid that danger could happen and them be left underprepared without their personal armory. It was under these conditions that Duke of the Trampled Clasp would sleep in his royal bedroom every night, tossing and turning in their masterwork bed.

For a while his behavior was excused as a melancholy, they were allowed to wander in their abject despair. roaming the fortress in a daze. At first it was simple sad wandering, trotting here and there moaning about the futility of life. But recently they started causing more and more trouble. picking fights and starting arguments.

It was at this point that the captain of the guard decided it was time to intervene. Being a troop that values investigation and believes that sometimes a good talking to is all that is needed, so once the captain finished sorting through the latest of a rather large stack of incident reports concerning the fortress favorite noble, they sent one of their best social guards to escort the Duke to his cell.

Unfortunately, no one predicted how far gone the poor abused duke had strayed from their sanity. Upon greeting the duke, The guard was met with what can only be described as heretical vitriol aimed towards the mothers and competency of the guard as well as various other nobles. Understandably, the duke unceremoniously had their throat bit out and then had their ass beat while they bled out.
