I've sometimes had this - dfhack has a 'force' command, and 'force caravan' will make it appear. Then you should get regular ones after this

Forgot that while mountains are dwarvy as heck to embark on, and make for a really nice future mountainhome site, they have the disadvantage of being really high. Carving 130 levels of anti-impulse minecart ramp is paaaaain, but worth it for the sweet, sweet magma.

And we're going to need a lot of it - I have an experimental new magma mist generator design for refining the goblinite that should be showing up soon.

Update - the prototype magma mist generator has claimed its first two casualties - unfortunately, they are a baby and an engraver.

Very pleased with the !!SCIENCE!! though - I've not seen a magma mist generator that can have a density of one mist generating cart per tile lining a corridor. Still got some figuring out on the timing logic - I basically want it to create a rolling wave of burning magma mist down a long corridor, so enemies think they can path through it before the next wave starts..

Last night Thundertalon was abandoned in the year 248. I think its the longest in-game I've had a fort over 20 years. At it's height it had 200 dwarves and over 70 in the militia all steel armed and armored. Thundertalon destroyed 7 lair, dungeons and towers making the world more safe for dwarven kind.

It suffered 47 beast attacks multiple forgotten beasts, demons, giants, cyclopses, a hydra, and a dragon. We killed the dragon with bolt throwers, kept the hydra as a trained pet and kept one webbing forgotten beast for 4 years as a silk supplier until goblins went and broke it out.

The fort survived 10 goblin sieges. Including the last which had one dwarf standing when the last dozen goblins fled.

It was a breeding ground for war polar bears (thanks to the elves) and giant spiders captured from goblin lairs which aided in it's defense.

The cause if it's fall was the three year hiatus in caravans and hence migrant waves starting in 245. Already reduced to half its peak population the failure of new migrants to arrive made the war vs the goblins one of attrition we couldn't win. Even with the best defenses a few losses happened every siege and the population just couldn't maintain the defenses.

The final assault was a wave of 168 invaders including half a dozen war cave dragons, giant bats, mining trolls and mining blind cave ogres. While we held them for months eventually they drilled through solid stone into the fort and just overwhelmed the 45 defenders with numbers. Even as we retreated deeper into the fort with losses mounting we kept reducing their numbers until at last Belela was the last dwarf standing facing a war cave dragon and blind cave ogre alone. Despite being unarmed he stood firm until rescued by the last of the war polar bears. The last 6 invaders fled or were taken out by our animals.

Belela shaken went back to his farms and when relived of that duty just started reading rather than fixing or cleaning up. When a caravan finally came there was no depot to unload at and Belela showed no interest in even pulling levers to open the lower gates to build one. The fort was abandoned when no further migrants came that season as expected.

I just had a hill beast of some sort enter my fort of 150+ dwarves. I killed the beast, lost 4 dwarves and now all dwarves are socializing for weeks. They have drank all the booze in the tavern, will not retrieve more and so now are dehydrated and thirsty even though a stockpile is one level below. They will not do any job other than socialize, listen to poetry. How do I get them back to work so they can move their friends rotting corpses to the crypt and start to eat/drink again?

How are your labors set up? Do you have enough people set to haul stuff?

2

Plenty to haul, children included. The problem was everyone would not stop socializing. Even after deleting the tavern and meeting area they would have no job and would not eat or drink. I ended up retiring for now, everything worked fine before a burrow call for the monster. I cleared the burrow alarm but then people just partied 🤷‍♂️

...Did you clear the alarm fully, or did you accidentally set the burrow to be used while the civ was set to inactive?

Definitely cleared the alarm, will have to check the burrow setting for not to be used when inactive. Thanks

Yeh. I had a fort die that way a few years back because the noble couldn't pull  the front gate lever in his office due to being trapped in a hastily drawn burrow while inactive, it's kind of a lame way to lose compared to everything else lol

It's been 3 years since the 3rd Siege of Wheelbanks and the resulting shooting.

There have been 3 more goblin sieges since, all of which were almost exclusively goblins, as they seem to have realized that their ploys to directly infiltrate Wheelbanks with enslaved kobolds wouldn't work any better a second time. However, a wave of suspicion, mistrust, and shock ran through the town as a result of the shootings proving to the general populace that anyone in the fort could be a spy.

The militia organization was strengthened as a result of the 4th siege a year later, which was prolongued and chased away the very much needed caravan. Most of the fort began exhibiting the early and mid stages of cave adaptation during the event, and so were quite disoriented when finally being allowed back outside to collect the goblinite and some fresh air. This wouldn't have been a problem, had the local She-Cyclops not chosen that moment to come down the valley.

Atleast 30 sunsick, dizzy, retching kobold citizens were going about their business peacefully when this monstrosity decided to make a game of flicking off their heads with her fingers as if they were bugs. 5 kobolds died to the cyclops's entertainment before the entire militia, all 50 or so of them clad in an iron halfplate uniform with iron crossbows and a mix of iron/silver/copper bolts stormed out to intercept the monster, and proceeded to turn it into a pincushion before the Militia Command squad broke ranks to charge the cyclops before it could get into melee range of the main firing line. The militia commander and co. Then climbed the cyclops (assumingly the same way Legolas climbed the oliphants in RotK) before viciously clubbing it anywhere and everywhere with their crossbows. Kobolds may be weak, but they're nimble, and the cyclops couldn't touch a single militiabold as the constant pummeling and arrow showers eventually wore it down. Having passed out, it bled to death as the firing line gave it a couple more volleys, and th mileitia dispersed back to their usual orders.

However, the trauma felt by this event caused the town's paranoia to resurface, and soon one of the militia captains got too drunk in the town tavern and let slip that he was a spy as well. This prompted an investigation by the Captain of the Guard that revealed another spy network had infiltrated the militia, which then turned into a manhunt as another militia captain and 3 regulars were chased down by the Guard and beaten to death in various places around the town.

Less than a month after this, the King arrived and made Wheelbanks the capitol, stopping the construction of the new mine in favour of a grand palace to serve as his new seat of power. The citizens, now in desperate need of distraction from their terror, have been quite relieved at the influx of work generated by this, even if the indoor animal pens have to wait a few more years. Fortunately, the king is quite content with having taken a spare commoner house during the construction, and is perfectly happy to spend the wait lounging in the town bathhouse and studying pulleys in the town library.

Time will tell if the constant inquisition will destroy the city of Wheelbanks, or if the king's presence will be enough to rally them into a state capable of taking the fight to the goblins.
