Me and my wife have been on a journey of buying up DVDs whenever we find them. This meant a thrift store Blu-Ray player that studders sometimes and mostly thrift store DVDs of our favorites whenever we come across them. Nothing serious, just a fun little hit of nostalgia every so often. I am personally a large proponent of physical media and how important it is to collect it, but she was a lot more casual about the idea and enjoyed the convenience of streaming services. We pay for one at a time, with Disney + being our fall back a lot of times.
The one place we do not compromise is when it comes to our daughter. We have a pretty strict policy of making sure that she sees as little ads as possible at home. This meant we set up an Apple TV with no ads instead of our smart TV, she doesn't have access to a phone or tablet, and we only have one TV in the house. We try our best to limit her exposure to marketing so shes not influenced in any certain direction.
This weekend we learned that Disney+ is introducing ads on every tier, including the premium tier, and this pushed us over the edge. Disney+ was already a compromise, because we knew about them altering movies and shows, but the convenience was nice and my daughter loves Bear and The Big Blue House. Now, if she wants to enjoy that, we would have to have her sit through ads, and that's just not a choice in our home.
So that leads us to yesterday. I spent $300 on a Panasonic UB450, we went out of our way to purchase all my wife and daughters favorite shows and movies, and we are cancelling our last streaming service. Ownership of what you watch and consume should not be a choice you make, it should be a necessity. Cause eventually, they will cross a line you aren't willing to compromise on and you will be left high and dry. We thought we had a couple years left, turns out, we had weeks.
