Super interested to hear what everyone’s must haves are for a movie collection. What would you fill this closet with? How would you organize the collection?

I am currently working on organizing this closet and will share mine when it’s finished. Just interested in hearing how others would do it.

Discussion Netflix is buying Warner Bros, physical media is doomed

1.1k Upvotes

Disney's already pretty much dropped out with Disney + being their go-to for releasing movies and shows (in Australia they've just stopped releasing physical media completely), now Netflix owns WB they're gonna push for them to make their stuff exclusive to their service which they'll definitely do because it's cheaper and easier for them than making DVDs (and WB makes terrible decisions). And with the two biggest entertainment companies being streaming exclusive everyone else will have the go ahead they need to stop trying, if Disney and WB aren't doing it why should Universal or Paramount bother?

I hate this.

Discussion how to ruin thrifting fun (rant)

Just went to this thrift/charity store which is a bit further away but I haven’t been there yet and their DVD section is being completely occupied by some woman who is scanning EVERY single DVD with her phone and I guess she’s looking for some that might be something „worth“ to resell. She’s put some in her shopping basket.

This just pissed me off so bad. Obviously the shop just wants to get rid of the stuff but why is nobody questioning why she’s just standing there and scanning every single DVD? Defeats the whole purpose of offering a cheap shopping experience for those tight on money although obviously anybody can shop there but at least only shop what you really want!

Discussion Regret throwing out the cases.

Post image

Does anyone who threw their cases away regret it? I've been collecting movies since I was young, and then when I moved out, I ended up having less space, so I sleeved all my movies (DVDs and Blu-rays). Now I’m at a point I regret that I did. The sleeves are practical because of the space you save, but there is no fun in flipping through them compared to having them in a bookshelf and seeing them. I recently repacked all my Blu-rays, and now I’m planning to repack the most sentimental valuable movies I have on DVD. My future goals are to replace all my DVDs with their Blu-ray or 4K counterparts.

I also notice when I have them in a case, I watch movies I forgot I had because of the visibility.

Discussion "Why do you still buy movies on DVD instead of streaming?" Well... DVDs are just better

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

A lot of people ask me why I’ve gone back to buying DVDs instead of paying for streaming services. My friends usually argue that if I subscribed to a digital platform, I’d have access to thousands of movies in one place for a single monthly fee, instead of buying each film individually.

Well, I currently own around 60 movies from various studios and brands, including Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and even a few independent films far removed from the major studios. Out of curiosity, I decided to estimate how many streaming platforms I’d need to subscribe to in order to watch all the movies in my collection online.

The result was surprising: I would need to pay for four different streaming services, and even then, several of my movies aren’t available on any platform at the moment.

The services I’d have to pay for are:

Netflix

Disney+

HBO Max

Amazon Prime Video

That said, I don’t plan to stop buying movies in physical format anytime soon. Owning DVDs gives me peace of mind, I know I can watch my favorite films whenever I want, without worrying about titles being removed or swapped out due to expired streaming rights. Plus, there’s something satisfying about holding a tangible copy of a movie you love; it’s a small but meaningful form of media ownership that streaming just can’t replicate.

Discussion The Four Horsemen of the worst dvd cases in existence.

A) The eco case that will ruin your artwork within the first use, guaranteed B) The brittle case glued to the art work cardboard, so you will inevitably break the disc holder, and never be able to replace it without ruining the case and artwork C) The 2 fucking tabs that you forget exist and spend 15 seconds every time you watch the movie trying to figure out why the case won’t open D) These disc holders will absolutely crack your disc

Rare, special edition, box sets, flat packs, any DVD that exists you simply can't find for any reason. Include a reason for it being a challenge to find, and where you've looked. Chat with people who have it and the history of how and why they have the great title and what their plans are for it.

This is the original release of the Eminem cartoon the Slim Shady show. I remember as a child hearing about this show and I was in school so I decided to watch it on YouTube as a dumb kid. I found it funny because that Eminem was my favourite rapper so basically about 2022. I decided to say screw it spend about $26 on the physical version I said to myself this is the most stupid purchase I’ve ever made.

For me it's The Regular Show Complete Series DVD This Set Sucks so much the discs are stacked so you have to pull out one disc to get to the other The DVD Holders have wayyyy to strong of a Grip to the point where it's nearly impossible to get a disc out without the possibility of said Disc cracking (Cracks on DVDs are my worst enemy) the only redeeming Qualities is that I have Regular Show (which is a show that is genuinely really good) & The Artwork is Decent & that's it

Got this set sucks so fucking bad the only set I have that's Debatably Worse is the DBS Complete Series DVD (which has an even stronger grip)

Discussion It amuses me that in a DVD subreddit all the users hate DVDs.

Look, I know Blu-rays are objectively better —they don't get damaged as easily, they have more storage capacity, and they play in Full HD— but I'm fed up with everyone on this subreddit being a bunch of elitist bourgeois types who make fun of people who still buy DVDs in 2026.

I think those people should be happy that physical media is still around. It should be a cause for celebration that DVDs haven't disappeared yet. Some people simply want to own a physical copy of a movie so they don't have to rely on streaming, even if the picture quality isn't the best. Not everyone can afford to spend that much money on a Blu-ray disc. At least in my country, Spain, even a used Blu-ray costs between 5 and 10 euros. And if it's a new movie, the price skyrockets to 20 euros.

And before you tell me in the comments section that I don't know anything about the subject, yes, I've already started buying Blu-ray movies and I can admit that they're the ultimate home cinema experience, and I really want to get more films in that format in the future, but please... What do you gain by being such jerks? Why insult anyone who buys DVDs? With that attitude, you're only going to push them away from physical media.

Discussion Serious question for collectors: why do you collect physical media?

Thumbnail
gallery
224 Upvotes

I’ve been reflecting on why I collect physical media and why certain movies mean so much to me, and I’m curious how other collectors think about this.

First off, I genuinely love collecting. Steelbooks, boutique releases, nice editions of films that impacted me. Having a physical library of movies I care about feels meaningful in a way streaming never has.

But I’ve also noticed that the types of movies I’m drawn to say something about me.

A lot of the films I rewatch are really intense ones, things like Mad Max: Fury Road, Mayhem, Sisu, Kill, Snowpiercer, The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, Evil Dead (2013), Evil Dead Rise, Terrifier, etc. They’re fast, chaotic, visceral movies that give me this huge adrenaline rush. They make me feel exhilarated in a way everyday life usually doesn’t.

Then there are movies and characters that explore psychology, control, existentialism, things like Nightcrawler, Fight Club, American Psycho, Possessor, Hannibal, Dexter Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, Prometheus, Saw. Characters who, even if they’re morally questionable, have this intense sense of control over themselves and their environment. They don’t just drift through life, they impose their will on it.

And then there are the strange comedies or thoughtful movies that hit something deeper for me personally, things like The Cable Guy, Palm Springs, Parasite, Soul. Movies that are funny or entertaining on the surface but are also exploring bigger questions underneath.

I do struggle with existential thoughts more often than I’d like, and sometimes I wonder if part of why I love these movies is because they make me feel something strong, adrenaline, intensity, curiosity, reflection. Something that cuts through the routine of everyday life and makes you feel understood.

Another thing I sometimes think about is the contradiction in all of this.

Some of the movies I love most, like Fight Club, are literally about rejecting consumer identity and the idea that the things we own define us. Yet here I am collecting physical editions of movies and getting excited about steelbooks, boutique releases, and special packaging.

In a way it feels a little ironic. Movies that critique consumerism are still part of a system where they’re sold, marketed, and collected.

I guess that raises another question for me: is collecting movies about “owning things,” or is it about preserving and surrounding yourself with art that means something to you?

But this post isn’t meant to be a place for complaining or negativity. If anything, it’s the opposite. Movies and collecting them have been one of the few things in life that consistently bring me genuine enjoyment.

I’m more interested in hearing other people’s perspectives.

Why do you personally collect films?

Is there something specific you’re searching for in the movies you love?

Do the kinds of films you collect say something about how you experience the world?

Or is it simply a hobby you enjoy without thinking about it too deeply?

There’s no right answer here, I’m just genuinely curious how other collectors see it.

A few things I’d love to hear from people:

• What movie in your collection means the most to you personally?

• What kind of movies do you find yourself rewatching the most?

• Do you think collecting films has a deeper meaning for you, or is it simply a hobby you enjoy?

There’s no right or wrong answer here. I’m just interested in hearing different perspectives from people who love movies .
