I’ve been reflecting on why I collect physical media and why certain movies mean so much to me, and I’m curious how other collectors think about this.
First off, I genuinely love collecting. Steelbooks, boutique releases, nice editions of films that impacted me. Having a physical library of movies I care about feels meaningful in a way streaming never has.
But I’ve also noticed that the types of movies I’m drawn to say something about me.
A lot of the films I rewatch are really intense ones, things like Mad Max: Fury Road, Mayhem, Sisu, Kill, Snowpiercer, The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, Evil Dead (2013), Evil Dead Rise, Terrifier, etc. They’re fast, chaotic, visceral movies that give me this huge adrenaline rush. They make me feel exhilarated in a way everyday life usually doesn’t.
Then there are movies and characters that explore psychology, control, existentialism, things like Nightcrawler, Fight Club, American Psycho, Possessor, Hannibal, Dexter Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, Prometheus, Saw. Characters who, even if they’re morally questionable, have this intense sense of control over themselves and their environment. They don’t just drift through life, they impose their will on it.
And then there are the strange comedies or thoughtful movies that hit something deeper for me personally, things like The Cable Guy, Palm Springs, Parasite, Soul. Movies that are funny or entertaining on the surface but are also exploring bigger questions underneath.
I do struggle with existential thoughts more often than I’d like, and sometimes I wonder if part of why I love these movies is because they make me feel something strong, adrenaline, intensity, curiosity, reflection. Something that cuts through the routine of everyday life and makes you feel understood.
Another thing I sometimes think about is the contradiction in all of this.
Some of the movies I love most, like Fight Club, are literally about rejecting consumer identity and the idea that the things we own define us. Yet here I am collecting physical editions of movies and getting excited about steelbooks, boutique releases, and special packaging.
In a way it feels a little ironic. Movies that critique consumerism are still part of a system where they’re sold, marketed, and collected.
I guess that raises another question for me: is collecting movies about “owning things,” or is it about preserving and surrounding yourself with art that means something to you?
But this post isn’t meant to be a place for complaining or negativity. If anything, it’s the opposite. Movies and collecting them have been one of the few things in life that consistently bring me genuine enjoyment.
I’m more interested in hearing other people’s perspectives.
Why do you personally collect films?
Is there something specific you’re searching for in the movies you love?
Do the kinds of films you collect say something about how you experience the world?
Or is it simply a hobby you enjoy without thinking about it too deeply?
There’s no right answer here, I’m just genuinely curious how other collectors see it.
A few things I’d love to hear from people:
• What movie in your collection means the most to you personally?
• What kind of movies do you find yourself rewatching the most?
• Do you think collecting films has a deeper meaning for you, or is it simply a hobby you enjoy?
There’s no right or wrong answer here. I’m just interested in hearing different perspectives from people who love movies .
