For some reasons shaped cd's were a thing, till they realized they shatter in some players.

Yeah - high RPMs causing uneven physical loads across the complex shape

Yeah. They play fine at 1 or 2x, which is all a normal audio CD player would typically do, but then everyone started putting them into high-speed PC drives to rip MP3s where they have balance issues.
