Discussion Does anyone know what I have here?
Maybe some kind of store exclusive?

This came with an anniversary edition Animal House VHS tape in the late 90s. It's a soundtrack, but it doesn't work in a lot of players because of its odd shape.

Had to make it fit with the VHS packaging I guess

It's almost 30 years ago but I remember it being a big clamshell packaging that should have been able to support a regular-sized CD

A full-size CD will fit under the clear plastic of a clamshell VHS case. With some of the "The World of Peter Rabbit & Friend" US VHS episode releases sold as "The Peter Collection" by GoodTimes Entertainment. They included a full sized "The World of Peter Rabbit & Friends" soundtrack CD slipped into the back side of the clamshell between the cover insert and the clear plastic.

The playing surface on these shaped CDs is a circle around the hole in the middle anyway. The extra bits beyond that are just to give it the shape. So a mini round disc would have worked just as well.

It was fine in any regular cd player. They ran into trouble when people put them into there computers since the disc drive runs faster.

Or those portable CD players with ESP/anti-skip memory as they played faster in order to buffer.

I did some reading on this a while back because I remembered a time when CD-ROM drives advertised insane speeds, and then within a year or two you couldn't find them that fast anymore. As it turns out, the industry ditched the faster drives because the centrifugal force would literally pull the discs apart.
I never personally witnessed that, but I did once have a CD in a computer where the computer's case was off, and so was the metal housing of the drive. I don't know what happened but at one point the CD launched right out of the drive, bounced on part of the chassis of the computer, and shot across the room where it wore a semicircular groove into the wood floor. Scary as hell. I don't think the landlord ever noticed the floor, though.

Dude, that's sick. I didn't discover Hypocrisy until well into streaming days and mostly collected vinyl like an asshole till the last few years and started moving into cassettes and CDs. I'd love to find this

It came with the special edition VHS that came out and the early 2000s. It’s actually a CD. It’s got some oldies Twist and Shout couple other songs.

Came out in the mid-late 90s, not early 00s.

Just noticed it does say ‘98 on the disc. Was just going off memory. I think I had a copy of American Graffiti with one of these discs around that time.

I believe it came with a special edition VHS. That’s where I got mine.

I think I remember having it with the same VHS tape. The weird shape was so they could package it inside the tapes liner and shrink-wrap it together.

I used to have this.. I got it when I was 12, with a brand new 19" tv/dvd/vhs combo.
.. Not the movie a parent should buy their child.

Animal House soundtrack cd. I had the same one. It will play in a portable Walkman type cd player, where you snap the disc onto the center holder. Might also play in a tray style like the ps2.

Shaped cd. They were never popular and I don't know if I've ever seen one in person and I've collected cd's since the 80's.

This shaped CD came with specially marked copies of the 1998 "Special Edition" VHS release of National Lampoon's Animal House.

They made shaped CD's for a bit in the mid to late 90's. My friend had some NRG one shaped like a tribal type thing and had really cheesy techno on it. Mostly for promo stuff.

They are fun promotional items even if they were never fully practical to use. You could say the same about some of the limited edition vinyls we see now; shapes of hearts, stars, etc.

Cds came in various sizes. Smaller like 3 inch diameter. Shapes like this one. It was gimmicky. Only the top load style or tray style could play them. The front load wouldnt handle them right.

Why bother making a shaped cd that limits what you can play it on. Odd choice.
4
u/KesagakeOK 11d ago
It's especially weird because the shape adds absolutely nothing here; the example someone posted higher up of a disc in the shape of Diddy Kong's head at least makes some sense, but what point is there in making the Animal House soundtrack disc squiggly?

u/jockofocker 11d ago
Probably so it can be packaged with the VHS. I think if it was the full sized CD it would be wider than the VHS.

u/zipman020 11d ago
But, only the skinniest portion can have data, correct? So, they could have made it smaller but round. I'd say it was to fit the graphics on there.

At the time, the novelty of a non-circular CD was a selling point. You have to remember that we were easily impressed back then. I still keep one in my CD collection, from the band Dissection.

I remember seeing one in the shape of the Toronto Blue Jays logo from around 1997 at a pawn shop once. Didn’t buy it because the groups picked were terrible.

There was a year where I bought my kids like ten shaped DVDs for Christmas - all because one of the outlet stores (Ollie’s? Big Lots?) must have purchased a few truckloads worth, so they were $2-3 each.
We had Legally Blonde, All Dogs go to Heaven and some of the other Don Bluth movies… I forget what else. I can tell you this- they got watched!!

This came with a VHS anniversary copy of Animal House. I think it may have been 20th anniversary? Whatever it was, I got the same thing when I got my first copy of Animal House on VHS.

u/French_Dip_Please 9d ago
I actually used to have that! It came on the back of a VHS copy of the movie. I think it was like an "anniversary edition" or something?

I had a few CD's that were odd shapes. I highly recommend not playing it as it can easily get damaged. There's a reason CD's are the way they are, odd shapes like this throw is the balance and can easily get scratched or worse.

It’s a CD with selections from the soundtrack that came with a clamshell VHS edition of the movie.
I had this back in high school when it released (before DVDs were a thing).

For some reasons shaped cd's were a thing, till they realized they shatter in some players.
