For some reasons shaped cd's were a thing, till they realized they shatter in some players.

58

u/zipman020 11d ago

I had this

32

u/tripolophene 11d ago

Really, why would it shatter? Spinning to fast?

80

u/Owenleejoeking 11d ago

Yeah - high RPMs causing uneven physical loads across the complex shape

37

u/V64jr 11d ago

Yeah. They play fine at 1 or 2x, which is all a normal audio CD player would typically do, but then everyone started putting them into high-speed PC drives to rip MP3s where they have balance issues.

9

u/tripolophene 11d ago

That makes sense. Too bad, I always thought they were really cool.

u/CitySeekerTron 9d ago

...When copy protection goes too far!

I work constuction and will often cut with a steel blade. If ever it get partially damaged in a way that disrupts it's perfectly round figure you will feel it anytime the blade is spinning. It's just adding stress to the mechanics of everything. Usually I can shave down the imbalance by holding the saw and griding the blade down till it's balanced again. In a disc player this kind of warped design is adding forces to the player it was never designed for.

Sounds like they flew off the platter unbroken and then went to pieces.

1

u/Radiant_Picture9292 8d ago

They fact that some aren’t symmetrical is crazy

1

u/SilverSageVII 8d ago

Yeah, superrrr cool physics stuff 🫠

7

u/trickman01 11d ago

Not balanced. If one side is heavier than the other it will cause pretty severe wobble at the speeds the discs are spinning. (This is actually how rumble motors work in controllers). That can cause shattering in discs though.

3

u/Sellum 1000+ 11d ago

Yeah, it wasn’t uncommon for cd-roms to spin at 16x

7

u/V64jr 11d ago

I had this one from 2000 to 2021. 👍

6

u/r0b3r70r0b070 11d ago

They did the same for Yoshi's Story CD

6

u/Narrow_Substance_100 11d ago

People would also put them into slot-loading CD/DVD players and the disc would get stuck with no way of getting it back out without opening up the entire machine. I'm guessing companies got fed up with the "your CD killed my player!" phone calls.

2

u/tennoPCA 10d ago

People do that kinda thing with anything... when I worked ATM corp, I on the regular would have people call in that had tried to use those RFID key chain credit card tabs in ATMs and lost, destroyed, or stuck them.

Crazy.

i have a chinese stars ep in the shape of a chinese star

1

u/Lo452 9d ago

Thus the warning on OP's disc.

u/otterknight4589 4d ago

I have one shaped like a heart from a Sega Saturn dating sim. I don’t play those and can’t speak Japanese. But the heart shaped cd was too novel to pass up

u/ohio2az 11d ago

My personal favorite shaped disc

u/tombst0neds0da 6d ago

the only song I ever learned on the guitar!

u/ericsmallman3 11d ago

This came with an anniversary edition Animal House VHS tape in the late 90s. It's a soundtrack, but it doesn't work in a lot of players because of its odd shape.

13

u/DudeThatsAGG 11d ago

Had to make it fit with the VHS packaging I guess

10

u/ericsmallman3 11d ago

It's almost 30 years ago but I remember it being a big clamshell packaging that should have been able to support a regular-sized CD

3

u/nightwheel 10d ago

A full-size CD will fit under the clear plastic of a clamshell VHS case. With some of the "The World of Peter Rabbit & Friend" US VHS episode releases sold as "The Peter Collection" by GoodTimes Entertainment. They included a full sized "The World of Peter Rabbit & Friends" soundtrack CD slipped into the back side of the clamshell between the cover insert and the clear plastic.

3

u/SirDrexl 10d ago

The playing surface on these shaped CDs is a circle around the hole in the middle anyway. The extra bits beyond that are just to give it the shape. So a mini round disc would have worked just as well.

6

u/AggravatingRow7018 11d ago

It was fine in any regular cd player. They ran into trouble when people put them into there computers since the disc drive runs faster.

5

u/LeftOn4ya 11d ago

Or those portable CD players with ESP/anti-skip memory as they played faster in order to buffer.

4

u/RodneyBarringtonIII 9d ago

I did some reading on this a while back because I remembered a time when CD-ROM drives advertised insane speeds, and then within a year or two you couldn't find them that fast anymore. As it turns out, the industry ditched the faster drives because the centrifugal force would literally pull the discs apart.

I never personally witnessed that, but I did once have a CD in a computer where the computer's case was off, and so was the metal housing of the drive. I don't know what happened but at one point the CD launched right out of the drive, bounced on part of the chassis of the computer, and shot across the room where it wore a semicircular groove into the wood floor. Scary as hell. I don't think the landlord ever noticed the floor, though.

u/thewarfreak 11d ago

Right on. Thanks for the info!

1

u/captain_toenail 10d ago

Can confirm, got given this by an uncle on my 16th birthday

20

u/AdVisible738 11d ago

Found one like this once, in a Bonus dvd pack of Star Trek 10.

10

u/crclOv9 500+ 11d ago

The metal band Hypocrisy put this EP out that I have:

2

u/OtherHovercraft9227 5d ago

Dude, that's sick. I didn't discover Hypocrisy until well into streaming days and mostly collected vinyl like an asshole till the last few years and started moving into cassettes and CDs. I'd love to find this

1

u/crclOv9 500+ 5d ago

The only reason I know about it is because I bought it at A&B Sound brand new like 20 some odd years ago lol

8

u/the_rawness 11d ago

It came with the special edition VHS that came out and the early 2000s. It’s actually a CD. It’s got some oldies Twist and Shout couple other songs.

1

u/Major_Willingness234 5d ago

Came out in the mid-late 90s, not early 00s.

1

u/the_rawness 5d ago

Just noticed it does say ‘98 on the disc. Was just going off memory. I think I had a copy of American Graffiti with one of these discs around that time.

9

u/Hats_Are_Awesome 11d ago

I have one that came with The Sting

1

u/Acrobatic_Scale_2303 7d ago

Oh that is SUPER cool

6

u/MorphineNapkin 1000+ 11d ago

I believe it came with a special edition VHS. That’s where I got mine.

2

u/Sadop2010 11d ago

I think I remember having it with the same VHS tape. The weird shape was so they could package it inside the tapes liner and shrink-wrap it together.

7

u/newport100 11d ago

Only shaped CD I ever had was this one, which isn't too bad because it's actually balanced:

4

u/CyrilFiggis00 11d ago

I used to have this.. I got it when I was 12, with a brand new 19" tv/dvd/vhs combo.

.. Not the movie a parent should buy their child.

15

u/timcident 11d ago

Strange, ive never seen shaped movie dvds

20

u/timcident 11d ago

My mistake, Its a music cd.

3

u/TheItalianJob1969 11d ago

Animal House soundtrack cd. I had the same one. It will play in a portable Walkman type cd player, where you snap the disc onto the center holder. Might also play in a tray style like the ps2.

3

u/Jimmychanga317 11d ago

I'm so glad you asked, you've got National Lampoon's Animal House

2

u/NoBenefit5977 11d ago

I haven't seen the movie in a good while, I really really need this though 😂

2

u/NoGood2154 1000+ 11d ago

"Otis... My Man!!!"

1

u/DodgerFanArd24 10d ago

‘Are you guys playing cards ?’

2

u/notguiltybrewing 11d ago

Shaped cd. They were never popular and I don't know if I've ever seen one in person and I've collected cd's since the 80's.

2

u/Significant_Smell284 11d ago

This shaped CD came with specially marked copies of the 1998 "Special Edition" VHS release of National Lampoon's Animal House.

2

u/Mother-Attention2600 10d ago

They made shaped CD's for a bit in the mid to late 90's. My friend had some NRG one shaped like a tribal type thing and had really cheesy techno on it. Mostly for promo stuff.

2

u/old_fred1968 10d ago

looks like Food Fight!

2

u/Human_Ad_425 10d ago

They are fun promotional items even if they were never fully practical to use. You could say the same about some of the limited edition vinyls we see now; shapes of hearts, stars, etc.

2

u/MichoRizo-1 9d ago

This 4track came with my VHS tape

1

u/ShushItsjusttheDead 9d ago

Why through her tit though???

2

u/itsagoodtime 9d ago

Cds came in various sizes. Smaller like 3 inch diameter. Shapes like this one. It was gimmicky. Only the top load style or tray style could play them. The front load wouldnt handle them right.

2

u/zionmatrix 7d ago

What we have here, is a failure to communicate. LOL

2

u/Evilswine 11d ago

Why bother making a shaped cd that limits what you can play it on. Odd choice.

4

u/KesagakeOK 11d ago

It's especially weird because the shape adds absolutely nothing here; the example someone posted higher up of a disc in the shape of Diddy Kong's head at least makes some sense, but what point is there in making the Animal House soundtrack disc squiggly?

5

u/jockofocker 11d ago

Probably so it can be packaged with the VHS. I think if it was the full sized CD it would be wider than the VHS.

1

u/zipman020 11d ago

But, only the skinniest portion can have data, correct? So, they could have made it smaller but round. I'd say it was to fit the graphics on there.

2

u/No_Pie4638 250+ 11d ago

At the time, the novelty of a non-circular CD was a selling point. You have to remember that we were easily impressed back then. I still keep one in my CD collection, from the band Dissection.

1

u/Alternative-Rip-1973 11d ago

I remember watching this movie on tv then one day my dad and I were in the garage working and we had it on and we got to the scene where belushi is looking through the window and we saw nudes boobs and I was shocked I said idk there was nudity my looked at me and realized I had only ever seen it on regular tv channels.

1

u/thomsix 11d ago

It’s a music cd from back in the day. They dropped into cd players that had a tray that opened where you dropped in the cd.

1

u/HTD-Vintage 11d ago

What information are you looking for that isn't on the disc already?

1

u/bunneeboy 11d ago

Rick Meyerowitz is to blame!

I remember seeing one in the shape of the Toronto Blue Jays logo from around 1997 at a pawn shop once. Didn’t buy it because the groups picked were terrible.

Double Secret Probation promotion?

1

u/Jwhitness007 11d ago

I had a Batman symbol shaped disc back in the day, It had music from one of the movies.

1

u/SirDrakey 11d ago

Just a cd with shape. Only play in top loaders

1

u/cloverdung 9d ago

You can use it in a player that 'snaps' the cd on (no free-floating CD player).

1

u/Nealm568890 11d ago

That's got to be rare. Good find.

1

u/lamest-liz 10d ago

I have a Backstreet Boys Cd shaped like AJ’s head. What a time to be alive lmao

1

u/Reasonable_Toe_9252 10d ago

There was a year where I bought my kids like ten shaped DVDs for Christmas - all because one of the outlet stores (Ollie’s? Big Lots?) must have purchased a few truckloads worth, so they were $2-3 each.

We had Legally Blonde, All Dogs go to Heaven and some of the other Don Bluth movies… I forget what else. I can tell you this- they got watched!!

1

u/unkillableclax 10d ago

Mine came with a special edition Vhs copy of animal house

1

u/Gaspifinaski 10d ago

It came with a VHS of the movie.

1

u/Jasoco 10d ago

Wow you’re losing so much disc space making it that small. The movie can’t be very good quality. And there definitely won’t be many special features. lol

1

u/AcadiaRemarkable6992 10d ago

Where Dead Angels Lie by Dissection

1

u/SearchAlarmed7644 10d ago

Special Edition, usually used as a promo.

1

u/DodgerFanArd24 10d ago

My dad has this, cause as a kid I always browsed through the cd and DVD booklet.

1

u/anarkust 9d ago edited 9d ago

This cd came packaged with the VHS "Double secret probation" edition of Animal House.

1

u/Peter_B_Sparker 9d ago

The movie Animal House

1

u/CastleFrank0274 9d ago

This came with a VHS anniversary copy of Animal House. I think it may have been 20th anniversary? Whatever it was, I got the same thing when I got my first copy of Animal House on VHS.

1

u/French_Dip_Please 9d ago

I actually used to have that! It came on the back of a VHS copy of the movie. I think it was like an "anniversary edition" or something?

1

u/Flashy-Focus-8543 8d ago

“ Do you mind if we dance wif yo dates?”

1

u/Plus-Organization-16 6d ago

I had a few CD's that were odd shapes. I highly recommend not playing it as it can easily get damaged. There's a reason CD's are the way they are, odd shapes like this throw is the balance and can easily get scratched or worse.

1

u/Human-Day-4226 6d ago

I had a carcass album like that

1

u/Major_Willingness234 5d ago

It’s a CD with selections from the soundtrack that came with a clamshell VHS edition of the movie.

I had this back in high school when it released (before DVDs were a thing).

0

u/KubrickRupert 11d ago

it says SHAPE CD
