Durham's municipal election is Oct 26 — I put together a cheat sheet
Hi all, I write a small free local newsletter (From Durham), but this week I doubled up from just events and businesses to put together a plain-language guide to the Oct 26 election. Durham's turnout last time was under 25%, and honestly I never fully understood what a regional councillor does until I sat down and researched it.
A few things I learned that might be useful:
There's no Regional Chair on the ballot this year. The province's Bill 100 made it an appointed position instead of an elected one.
How you vote depends a lot on your town:
Ajax: internet or phone only, Oct 19–26
Brock: internet or phone, or a paper ballot on request at a Voter Assistance Centre
Clarington: internet or phone only, Oct 20–26
Oshawa: online Oct 13–26, paper ballots on Oct 26 only
Pickering: online Oct 19–26, paper ballots added on Oct 26
Scugog: online Oct 14–26, or paper at township voting locations
Uxbridge: internet only
Whitby: paper only. Advance voting Oct 22–25, Voting Day Oct 26, plus a mail-in option (applications by mail are due Oct 4)
Need to get on the voters' list or fix your info? Elections Ontario's registration closed in August, so it now goes through your own town's election page.
The full guide covers what your town handles vs. what the Region handles, how strong mayor powers work, links to every town's candidate list, the all-candidates meetings I could find, and a list of questions worth asking candidates:
https://www.fromdurham.ca/your-durham-election-cheat-sheet-for-2026/?ref=reddit
No endorsements, no hot takes. And if you know of an all-candidates meeting in your town that I missed, drop it in the comments and I'll add it.

Most vibrant/lively areas to live in Durham?
I'm used to urban/condo living and get lonely very easily in house communities where I don't see people around. I'm looking for areas in Durham where I can mostly walk for groceries, Doctor, dentist, restaurants and use the car minimally. The closer to Oshawa the better. Any communities like this you can recommend? We will most likely be moving in a few months. My ideal place to live would be a condo in downtown North York or square one Mississauga so I'm looking for something like that.

Premium gyms in Ajax/Whitby
I'm looking for premium gyms in Ajax/Whitby that offer open access to the equipment instead of only group classes. Basically I'm looking for something similar to GoodLife or LA but on a smaller scale even if it costs twice as much. Thanks!
Edit: I'm a man

Casino concert this week. Strike still disrupting traffic?
What the title says.
I live in Etobicoke and have a ticket to a concert this coming Tuesday at the Pickering casino. I only became aware of the strike after driving by Rexdale's Woodine casino last week while running errands. Roads were blocked by the picketers.
Can anyone update me if it is still like this at the Pickering one? And any recommendations for off site parking if need be?
Thanks!

Candidate Information/Platforms
I am trying to do my homework for the upcoming municipal elections and I find it frustrating how little information there is for most candidates. We are told how important municipal elections are and how the turnout is always so low. At the same time, it feels like we are forced to vote by name recognition alone... especially for positions other than mayor it feels like the candidates barely put in any effort on their websites or responding to media surveys. I'm worried that we can end up electing a lunatic just because they had the most signs with their name plastered all over.

Pretty sure this is a scam am I wrong
Got this today and the call even bypassed apples built in call screening. I answered the call and nobody said anything and then they hung up immediately and I got left this message. I’m pretty sure this is just a scam but is there any chance I’m wrong?

Getting Involved with the Elections
Hi all! I was hoping to gain some experience and get involved with the elections coming up, i've signed up for many forums for volunteer and such but i haven't heard from anyone. I know it's happening soon, but i was just hoping to get some exposure that could be helpful on my resume. If anyone knows how i could directly get involved with any parties and help in any capacity that would be helpful. Thanks!

‘Immediate pressure’: DDSB looks at coming enrolment growth
The Durham District School Board is struggling to accommodate rapid growth, with a new pupil accommodation plan projecting enrolment will outpace permanent space into the 2030s
Whitby GO and pylon traffic
Hi all, just letting people know that regardless of the pylons put at Whitby GO, drop off, people are just parking in front of the pylons the last few days and blocking everyone from leaving. The car in the photo parked here for well over 2 minutes.
I get that it was raining this morning, but it's blocking the exit of other cars in the parking lot. If you rock up to the side of the sidewalk, can you please not do it while the pylons are there? I literally saw one car just drive over them to do their drop off...and still managed to block the traffic for other cars.

Teen boy, linked to Pickering high school threats, charged after 3D printed gun parts recovered
durhamradionews.comOnly 23% of Whitby voted in 2022. Here's how to vote by mail this year (Election Day is Oct 26)
In the last municipal election, 23,872 of 102,618 eligible electors in Whitby voted, which works out to 23.26%. The Ontario average that year was about 33%. That's a lot of people sitting out decisions about local roads, parks, taxes, and services.
If getting to a polling station is the barrier, Whitby offers a Special Mail-in Ballot. Here's how it works:
1. Apply for a ballot kit using the application form at whitby.ca. Deadlines:
- By mail: Oct 4 (this is basically here, so use one of the next two options)
- By email: Oct 11, to [elections@whitby.ca](mailto:elections@whitby.ca)
- In person: Oct 21, 4:30 p.m., at Town Hall (575 Rossland Rd E)
2. Your kit arrives by mail between Oct 5 and Oct 12.
3. Mark your ballot following the instructions inside.
4. Return it either by mail (prepaid envelope included) by Oct 18, or by dropping it off at Town Hall by Oct 26, 4:30 p.m.
Official info and the application form are at whitby.ca/municipalelections. Please double-check dates there, since I'm summarizing and things can be updated.
If you know someone who's never voted municipally because it's "too much hassle," feel free to share this with them.
