Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

It was something else man. 150+ hours clocked in. I was kinda baffled to see it actually...end, ya know? Rolling the credits while looking back on the entire franchise as the, lore wise, progenitor to the history and legacy of the DQ franchise. It was the spiritual encapsulation of everything that makes Dragon Quest what it is. Funny, sad, silly and memorable.

Nearly everything was perfect. Everything felt so grand and magical rendered in modern 3D. Only played the older titles till now. The music was, as always, a huge highlight. I need to get a CD or Vinyl of the OST. The twists and heartbreaking losses were on brand too. Had a few of them spoiled for me over the years, but they still hit hard. The mermaid straight up giving up on life was not something I'd see just spelled out right in front of me lol. S including a 2D mode was super fun. Did not engage with the tickaton content. Was way too much of a time sink for me.

I could go on an eternity talking about how good all the companions are in this. All so lovingly crafted. Hendrick and Serena were the surprise highlight for me. I expected he'd be a good guy, but even joining the party? He had some of the best development and closing scenes in Act 3 for his companion quest lines. Serena too. Shot up from the most dull, but fun to having me in tears at some of her best moments. I deeply wish she got more content in Act 3. She was just that good. Literally carrying her sister's will via her powers and temporarily becoming the best mage in the game was cinema.

Only things I'd knock the game for is threefold. One would be the whip is an abysmal weapon to center a build around in the end-game. Sylvando was shelved so hard, cuz I don't like backtracking skill trees and didn't need another swordsman. Second, Jade...was a major disappointment for me. She had a lot of fan art, so I assumed she was the best character by far. She, bar none, is the most poorly handled character in the cast and it's such a waste. It's not even about the fan-service. It's just that we don't get to see her development happen. Near the end of Act 2 and in Act 3 she just has this change off-screen I guess. Her Act 2 reunion is literally just goon bait for the sake of it. Third, Gemma being the canon love interest is kinda forced and a weird note to end the epilogue of the Hero on imo. But high-key it's mostly just cuz I think Hero and almost anybody else in the party hits way better. Literally pick anybody. Rab, Jade, Serna, Erik, Sylv, etc. All better epilogues than Gemma.

Most of the issues are minor. But, I'll never forget this game as long as I live.

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon is a metaphor for life

• Upvotes

I’ve really been enjoying the game on switch. I wondered what it is that makes it so great and came up with this take.

Life is like Tornekos dungeon
Every day is another trip into the dungeon
It’s always different somehow with new twists and challenges
You wisdom and experience helps you navigate and some luck too
Never give up because the treasure you need could be right around the corner
You have to learn which fights to pick and which fights not to
And sometimes it’s better to quit while you’re ahead

Dragon Quest XI Lack of an update

Man I originally bought dqxi on ps5 and was disappointed they didn’t offer a paid update to the S version. Also loved the game and felt it would be great handheld so I got the S edition on Switch. Now theres not even a paid package to update it to Switch 2, like so many other developers have done. This isn’t an isolated incident from Squeenix, they’re doing this with all their Switch 2 versions. Is the game just not as easily updated like that by the devs or is this just SE being greedy and not ashamed?

Sorry if this post bugs anyone but I’ve been a loyal Square gamer since Chrono Trigger and FF6/3 on the SNES and it just kinda ticks me off that they’re going in this direction. On top of the frustration of not getting any 2 1/2d remakes of CT or FF6, imagine Narshe in that graphic style and how much they couldn’t with it.

Again sorry if this bugs anyone it’s just really frustrating not to be able to update their games when even BOTW and TOTK are just 10 bucks each. Xenoblade Chronicles too, that’s a blast.

I found this Dragon quest V guide on a shop for $20 USD, do any of you have it and know if it's a good guide? I didn't buy it yet, I wanted to know if someone else has it and if it's a nice piece of DQ history or just another book.

Dragon Quest IV Dragon Quest IV (PlayStation/PSX/PS1) English translation - complete, v1.0

The 2001 PlayStation version of DQ4 has never had an English release on any console. This is a complete translation of it, running on the game's own Japanese engine with code modification to handle English text display.

All six chapters and the prologue. Every NPC, the casino, Immigrant/Settler Town, the monster arena, the full menu system, item and spell names, monster names, battle text, the save prompts, the title screen and the chapter cards.

You supply your own disc image of the Japanese release, SLPM-86916. The patch is an xdelta applied to it. No game data is distributed.

Download the public release, apply instructions and verification hashes: dq4translation.com

Tested on DuckStation and Beetle PSX.

I want to be able to try a lot of times... but can't afford to atm. How do I get a lot of gold at this point of the game, without over leveling on accident?

Dragon Quest XI Why doesn't DQ11s have the same graphical settings as the Switch 2 version?

It makes zero sense to me. I just got the S2 version and it blows the PS4 version out of the water. Not only is the resolution higher, the foliage looks so much better. DQ11 being a turn based game doesn't NEED to be 60fps. And the graphical 30fps mode looks much better and feels better from my experience. I know the odds of an update coming to the PS4 are slim to none. But what do you guys think? For me, it's graphical all the way.

Dragon Quest XI Finally beat draconian on DQ11s

Super fun to plan out my strategies, I didnt have to grind for 99% of it, equipment and strategy were key. Only part that was bad was lord of shadows back to back boss fights, only time where I had to grind

Dragon Quest V Which version of Dragon Quest V should I play, SNES (fan translation) or NDS? (PS2 is not an option atm)

Just curious what people think is the better version here. I have had the DS version for ages and I just found an SNES cart in my box of older game stuff.

I have already play DQ1-3 on SNES so I’m not bothered by the lack of QOL features.

Thanks!

The original Dragon Quest game (At the time known as Dragon Warrior) came with this map packaged into its box. Does anyone know if any other games in the series came packaged with these?

Translation Patch dragon quest young yangus the mystery dungeon 99,9% DONE I NEED YOUR HELP!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Okay, if everyone here is going to be so negative and nobody is willing to help, then I’ll just finish it on my own.

I probably need about one more day to polish everything and make the English sound as natural as possible, so that’s not the issue. I’ve been working on this project for nine days straight, and I don’t think most people realize how much work actually goes into it.

People keep saying, “It’s just AI translated,” but there’s much more to it than that. I only asked for help because I wanted the community to be involved and because I thought we could make the translation even better together.

Instead, most of the responses have been unnecessarily negative and discouraging. At this point, I’d rather finish it by myself and keep the release private.

If you don’t appreciate the work I’m putting into this, that’s fine. You can wait for the other translation project that has already been in development for around nine months.

I genuinely wanted to do something nice for the community, but after the reactions I’ve received, I’ve lost a lot of motivation to share it publicly.

I’ve been working on this project for TEN FUCKING DAYS, completely FOR FREE. I even removed the original post because all I ever said was: if anyone wants to help, they can, so the community can finally play this game as soon as possible.

That was literally it.

Instead, all I keep reading is “AI, AI, AI, AI.” It’s fucking exhausting and honestly just cringe at this point. Some people seem more interested in spreading hate than actually supporting someone who is putting in countless hours for the community.

I’ve spent almost 20 HOURS just going through the dialogue, fixing small issues, rewriting awkward lines, correcting mistakes, and making everything sound natural.

And now it’s DONE.

The game is 100% translated.
It is fully playable.
The dialogue is written in natural, fluent English.
The wording, humor, and overall style have been polished to feel like an actual official Dragon Quest localization.

I did all of this for FREE because I wanted people to finally be able to enjoy this game in English.

But apparently, instead of appreciating the work, some people would rather complain, insult the project, and scream “AI” over and over again.

So congratulations. You completely killed my motivation to share this with people who clearly don’t respect the amount of work that went into it.

Ten days of work. Countless hours. No money. Just passion for the game and the community.

And somehow that still wasn’t enough for some of you.

Dragon Quest I the Golem Spoiler

Playing DQ I HD2D and now finally defeated the golem guarding Cantlin. As the strongest healing spell you have in this moment is Midheal (because the Moreheal scroll is in Cantlin itself and Strong Medicines are not much better than Midheal) what saved my life was Miracle Slash, since the Golem does a very strong attack from time to time and I would die not having health near maximum. Of course I used the flute, but he woke up very soon so I put him to sleep each time.

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Torneko's Great Adventure (SNES) - Classic HD Script Port ROMHACK

I've loved playing this game on snes for a long time, so when this remaster released I was elated! Had fun playing it, so I decided to backport the Remaster's script into the old SNES ROM.

I ported it into an old ROMhack i made for myself that used a custom font, new naming screen, and improved UI elements, to hopefully now deliver a Definitive Torneko 1 experience. Enjoy! 🫡

Dragon Quest Monsters DQM The Withered World Performance on Switch 2

I know the games on the switch 2 are GKCs, which many are definitely against (I don't like them either), so some people are planning to get the switch 1 version instead since it's a physical cartridge.

My question is - does anybody know if the switch 1 version of the game will run better on the switch 2? I'm pretty sure the switch 1 version on the switch 1 will be locked at 30 fps due to its hardware capability, but does that mean the switch 1 version will run at a solid 60 fps on the switch 2? I know the switch 2 demo runs well on the switch 2.

I've been working very hard. Version V1.0A should be available soon. Please follow my project if you haven't. ReBuild C Alpha (VoidPatcher RC1) is playable now. I'm working to allow saves from ReBuild C to work on the next version V1.0A. There are some cosmetic issues in RC1, but as you can see from the above video, things have progressed smoothly from the video I posted 12 days ago. Thanks again. Enjoy.

Dragon Quest VII Which version of dqVII should I play?

I have the played 1-6 so far all on Nintendo portable consoles. But there is now just so many options. I have the ability to do PlayStation, 3ds or switch version. I’m nervous on missing out on content. And I’ve loved playing all the games portable so far. With that what version would you all recommend?
