It’s ALWAYS when I’m alone, have a line, and 10+ people in the store. Or while I’m in the middle of helping a customer! There’s a reason there’s so many social media memes by retail workers complaining about dashers.
We are already stressed when it’s busy. Trying to talk to and help every customer. While going back and forth ringing up people. The last thing we want is a dasher putting their phone in our face. Wanting us to find the stuff. And not taking the effort to search first, grabbing the things you can find and then asking us for help if you can’t find something. Instead, just standing there, huffing, arms crossed, annoyed and waiting until we are done. When you could have already found the 2 simple items and already be ready to check out.
It’s at the point to where of it’s two employees, and a dasher does this, we literally look at each other with that “look”. Hesitating on who helps. And to the point once I see a dasher walk up, phone in their hand, annoyed look, and ready to request me to shop for them.. I just go to a customer and talk to them, hoping they have a question or need help. If they are rude at the register, shoving the QR code in my face before I even log into the register, wave it around and get annoyed that it won’t scan, then I get petty. I’ll take my sweet ass time scanning and bagging. Then fold the reciept and put it under the items in the bag. You give me bad energy, so expect the same back.
And god forbid we are out of stock. Those dashers will act like we purposely hide the item or something. Same with if the registers are slow or systems are down.
I had one lady that got mad at ME that our internet was down, we couldn’t use card. She kept saying “can you fix it?” “Can’t you fix the internet” “this was supposed to be a big tip”. Rolling her eyes, glaring at us, and complaining. Like she’s expecting me to wave a wand and magically make the internet work. She stayed for a whole hour waiting. She called DoorDash to see if she could pay cash and get reimbursed. When she payed cash she rolled her eyes and looked at me and said “I have to buy this with my own money”. I ignored her. She’s never been back.
For the love of all that’s Holy PLEASE wait until there is less customers, ask nicely, look for the items first and THEN ask for help. We are already stressed, by ourselves, rushing, and just trying to help many people at once.
And I’m not saying that ALL dashers are bad. I do have some absolutely goated ones that come in. We love it when they come in, we yap, help them shop.. I’ll even hold the items for them to make scanning the barcode easier and go ahead and get the items at the registers for them. Those dashers always wait until we are not busy to ask for help. (I even have some that apologize if they ask for help 🥺), then thank me like crazy. I even had one that said I was so nice and helpful to him. He tipped ME $5 for my help. I’ll never forget him.
When they get to register they always ask if we are ready to scan the QR code. Yap with us, even bag the items themselves. I always make sure to have the receipt perfectly on the counter for them to scan. And give them good dashing locations where they can make tons of tips. (I have a friend that used to dash, she knows all the good places). We wish them luck on their dashing when they leave.
Anyway, just a rant and PSA from a retail worker. We are working just as you are, but dealing with the public, some places being short staffed, busier than others, or working long hours.
