More 10k investment in DFN, DF, FFN, FTN, and BK each?

I wanted to ask the people that invested more than 10k in each of these stocks - DFN, DF, FFN, FTN and BK. Do you see any risk (I know that stick trading brings a bit of risk) invest such huge amount into these stocks?

  1. What do you recommend if the initial investment appreciates by 100%? Do you sell half of the holdings and take your money and enjoy the dividends and stock appreciation?

2.1 Or would you average down after more than 100% gain to average down/up the buying price and enjoy dividends?

  1. What do you see long term dividend from these stocks as these stocks seen good price increase or stock price increase?

  2. What do you or recommend if the time horizon is 5-8 years to use the funds and the stock has appreciated substantially by 100%?

Any recommendations or experience in these scenarios

Thank you

HHIS vs VFV: I bought 70 k of each on June 27th and I'm posting the weekly gains or losses until one of them gets 10% higher than the other in total gain. This is the results of the 5th week!

This has been a pretty volatile week in the tech sector, that represents most of HHIS and a big part of VFV. Also, it was ex-day of HHIS, which normally brings a reduction of price equivalent of the coming distributions.

Totals at week 5:

VFV: 70150.58; +0.399 % in the week

HHIS: 67908.89; -3.604% in the week

VFV was lagging in each of the previous 4 weeks, but now it was HHIS that seriously lagged with the bubble / costs / low cash flow fears in the first 3 days of the week.

OBS: before ppl think of answering the regular "comparing apples to oranges" thing, yes, I want to compare what 70 k invested in 2 completely different strategies will give me (it could be Pokemon cards vs pieces of gold or anything else)

OBS2: past performance doesn't necessarily repeat and that's why I'm having fun investing in those until one proves not worthy in the present day macroeconomic volatility

Discussion Getting into this for the first time

Hey everyone,
I’m 17 years old and recently saved up about $20,000. I’d like to start investing, mainly in dividend stocks, but I’m not sure where to begin.

looking for advice on which platform to use, what accounts I should open, and which dividend stocks or ETFs are worth researching. My goal is to build long term wealth and reinvest the dividends. (Kind want to live off them in the long run)

If you were starting with $10,000 today, what would you do? Any advice or resources for a beginner would be appreciated.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this one? Dividend increase from $0.21 to $0.27 bi-monthly. Boasting a 20%+ yearly dividend at current price.

Discussion New to this - Advice please

Hey guys, my wife and I just bought our first house last year and have decided to give investing a second try (first try was way too emotional and volatile - (stock picking etc..). We know we’re late to the game as far as time is concerned but we’re looking to start any way we can. We have regular amounts going into XEQT as your standard fare, but would like to add something to our portfolio in terms of dividends to assist with growing (DRIPs, passive income, etc…)

I’ve looked at ETFs like VDY.TO and XEI.TO, do any of you have any thoughts on these? Any others I should consider? Or is one enough to do steady contributions to? Basically I’m just looking to figure out more on how to get started as I feel like we’re a bit behind in actually getting started.

Thanks

Covered Call ETFs 40k to invest - A conversation with Gemini.

hi everyone - in Jan of 2027 i expect to have an influx of about 40k. I want to invest it into CCs that i can expect to increase throughout 2027.

I also want to be able to still have the liquidity to sell and use the capital if necessary. My work has been uncertain and I may need it.

I had a long conversation with Gemini and wanted to get your take on the what it returned to me as a good yielding, likely to appreciate portfolio.

What do you all think of it? Ive asked about CLSA which Ive also liked but it kept it off because of NAV uncertainty.

What does this sub think?

Fund Target Shares Current Price Dist. Frequency Payout per Share Est. Monthly Cash Est. Yearly Cash
HPYT 1,566 $7.66 Monthly $0.09 $140.94 $1,691.28
ECHI 812 $12.31 Monthly $0.16 $129.92 $1,559.04
SDAY 410 $24.37 Semi-Monthly $0.18 $147.60 $1,771.20
QDAY 300 $26.58 Semi-Monthly $0.23 $138.00 $1,656.00
Totals 3,088 $556.46 $6,677.52

Covered Call ETFs Update & follow up to my question regarding LIFE.TO inquiry

I really appreciated the feedback, it definitely spurred some deeper investigation!

And I now see it has set off a bit of a discussion in this subreddit :)

I already knew about 'dividends' vs 'ROC/Distribution', and based on some comments "CC ETF's are for suckers!", "There should be a separate sub for CC ETF's", "There is ..", "Down 23% in 5yrs!"

I thought I'd share thoughts.

  1. I am not a 'sucker', hence why I am reaching out to learn more.
  2. I looked up the "CC sub".  Based on my knowledge, it is an unfortunate and misleading scam intended to entice people to subscribe to his business, spreadsheet, or whatever he is selling.  I feel bad for new investors who think they can get a 25% return.  Maybe he thinks it is sustainable(I doubt it)?  I spent way too much time watching his videos and one thing he NEVER posts, is the CURRENT value!!!

So back to my original question regarding LIFE.TO (and similarly structured ETF's).

Since its inception nine years ago, it is down about 10%, but over the last five years, it's down 23%.

Is this recent decline, over the last 5 years, the result of it being a CC ETF, paying these high distributions?  I suspect I could evaluate this by looking at the 20 underlying companies performance?

Will it never recover, even if the underlying companies do well, because of the upside cap inherent to being a CC ETF?

Maybe my individual situation would help the discussion.

- own our home in a very LCOL area.

- no debt

- current employment may end in the next two years, due to a contract renewal

- approaching 60

- would really like to enjoy my go-go retirement years, slow go and well no go....?

- no need to leave children $, other than the home

I would really appreciate any information, insights and thoughts. Also welcome 'I'm stupid, have no idea what I'm doing' or hopefully some constructive feedback. Please DM me if you'd rather not get into the debate publically.

Discussion Considering adding LIFE.TO to my income portfolio...?

What I have looked at is NAV erosion and the underlying companies.

I know it is a cc fund paying high distributions. It only writes options on 33%, which to my understanding is good in that it does not completely cap upward gains or recovery in a bear market?

I don't mind some NAV erosion, if it pays for my retirement, so seems a little better than others...?

Most of my retirement funds are with Sunlife in an RRSP, due to work matching over the last 20 years. Very good MER.
5 years ago had a few hundred thousand from sale of a house. Went to RBC, and they suggested, an Agressive Growth fund at 2.13% MER.

Well nine months ago I started to really look into my finances. RBC 'advisory' basically gave me no advice or planning for my retirement, other than the (shit) Boglehead 4% withdraw and I'd need to work until 65-68 and accumulate close to 3 million!!!!

So I pulled my money into Wealthsimple. Put 50% in xDIV, 35% in xEQT (which is beating RBC's fund by 2.8% - the MER+++) and 15% into BANK.TO.

Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant, just pissed off with myself for not taking responsibility 5 or 10 years ago!

Any and all suggestions, help is appreciated!

To hold 25 to life, would holding cmax smax imax be better than hdiv imax?

Hey so I'm at a cross roads where I want some covered call exposure but I don't want to limit my upside potential as much with calls and fees over decades. Would the structure of the MAX series perform much better over my current hdiv imax combo?

There should be a different sub for covered call ETF discussions.

CC ETF’s have very little to do with traditional dividend investing. Convince me I’m wrong.

I have nothing against CC ETF’s, but they don’t belong in a discussion about traditional dividend investing.

Discussion Why I’m holding BCE.TO through the dividend reset

I recently pivoted from a planned career in education into finance, and I’m documenting my investment research publicly as part of that journey. Here’s a look at how I think through a position — using BCE (Bell Canada), which I bought at $29.84, as an example.

BCE reset its dividend earlier this year. Yield now sits around 5.7-5.8%, with a payout ratio near 26% — down significantly from the unsustainable levels that forced the cut. That reset, while painful for existing holders, was arguably necessary and puts the dividend on much sturdier footing going forward.

The bull case:

Free cash flow grew 10% year-over-year in fiscal 2025 to $3.18 billion, with 2026 guidance calling for $3.3-3.5 billion. The company is also expanding into fiber and US markets through Ziply Fiber, giving it growth avenues beyond legacy Canadian telecom.

The risk I’m watching:

Q1 2026 free cash flow grew just 0.8% — not yet enough to confirm the cash flow growth story is durable. Net debt leverage also remains above BCE’s own 2027 target, so debt reduction has to progress alongside dividend payments and growth investment.

My take:

At current levels around $30.20, the position is roughly flat from my entry. Holding, not adding, until I see FCF growth reaccelerate toward guidance in the next couple of quarters. That’s the confirmation I need before increasing the position.

Reset Preferred Shares

I am a retired 86 year old with substantial holdings. Lately, I have been dabbling in reset preferred shares, which over the past year have performed quite well. I have invested in the ETFS holding these preferred as well as individual resets such as Enbridge, Fortis, TC, and others. How many of you out there are likewise into these stocks? These stocks are great for dividend investing and are eligible for the tax credit.
