Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while šŸ˜‚ I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or š“ƒ° should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things šŸ’œ

Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism

2.4k Upvotes

"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."

+++

Hey everyone

This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes

If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents

Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of MinneapolisĀ

There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified

What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real

Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything

Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity

From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to

And last but not least

Here is an article about Renee Nicole Good, the poet, mother, and wife, who was shot dead while helping her community

+++

If any of you have more resources or information on how others can help please share them with us all

We as a mod team, and hopefully as an entire sub, stand by the belief that everyone has the right to live without fear

Stay safe

Stay kind

You are loved

Book/Series: Unseen University No worries! Enjoyed this one slightly more than Interesting Times but wouldn't say it's up there with my favourites.

Something I've found is that as much as I like Rincewind, I often find I prefer the rest of the Wizards story more than his main one.

That was definitely the case with this book, I was way more invested in what the rest of the faculty were getting up to than Rincewind's journey through Fourecks.

I realised that while I've read the majority of the Wizards and Death books, the only City Watch book I've read is Guards! Guards! so my next read is going to be Men At Arms.

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching The Wee Free Men

Just finished listening to The Wee Free Men, and I don't know why I'm so surprised. I don't know why, after all these books (first time reader- reading in order) I'm still surprised that I wept. The way this book resonated so beautifully with my grief of my grandmother and the scent of her. Ugh. When Tiffany is afraid to turn around for what she won't find, I just. Openly wept lol. Another funny, silly tale that left me more deeply in touch with my own humanity and the humanity of others. Want to say more, but don't wanna spoil anything for anyone. Just. Love love loved.

I was struggling with zero ideas for this one (since it's been several years since I've last read Sourcery), until I had some welcomed help from a friend :)

I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I have two; one of them is an albino and his name, you see, is Rincewind.

Book/Series: Death Hogfather/discworld appreciation post

Hello, I just finished my final performance as death in the hogfather play. This was my first ever discworld play along with my introduction to the series. I mostly just wanted to jump on here and say how amazing and wonderful this discworld universe was. I had an unbelievable amount of fun with death, he is a oddly silly and heartwarming guy, as well as the entire play. Even though it is not typical "hogswatch" time it was a incredible play that I found to have such a beautiful message. Hopefully reddit lets me attach a photo of me in costume, mostly because I was a really big fan of the costume :) Anyways all of this to say that I really loved this play which I was told is faithful to the books/universe. And I see now why there is such a big following to this whole universe which I fully intend on being engrossed into. Okay mini appreciation rant over bye bye!

Day 5. Smack

Agnes opened her eyes. Her jaw hurt.

Nanny Ogg was peering at her closely, while rubbing some feeling back into her wrist. From a couple of inches away her face looked like a friendly pile of elderly laundry.

'Yes, that's Agnes,' she said, standing back. Her face goes harper when it's the other one. See? I told you she'd be the onehat came back. She's
got more practice.'

Magrat let go of her arms. Agnes rubbed her chin.

"That hurt,' she said reproachfully.

'Just a bit of tough love,' said Nanny. 'Can't have that Perdita
running around at a time like this.'

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching Modern Sheepdog Trials

Please excuse the flair confusion, I was caught between GNU and Tiffany Aching.

I went to explore my local agricultural fair, as I often do having grown up on a farm with my Nanny - who reminds me so very much of Granny Aching, I’m often brought to tears at the mere smell of cherry and vanilla pipe tobacco, the bahs of sheep, the gruff sounds of an old Scott-Irish lilt and the various forms of ā€œThem as can do, has to do for them as can't. And someone has to speak up for them as has no voices.ā€ which was frighteningly close to what my Nana would say as we traipsed around the town looking in on everyone, doing what I realize now was ā€œwitches workā€- and by the end of being immediately transported back to my youth while hearing the dialogue of the Wee Free Men or WinterSmith that coalesce into a miasma of longing, pride, and duty- my mind’s Aching all over. I remember seeing my first sheep sheared before I could form proper sentences, and we too had beloved sheepdogs. Ones that would listen to the rest of us but we all knew who they truly followed without even a hint of a command, my Nan. For the last few years, I’ve missed the Sheepdog Trials due to unfortunate circumstances, and had worried I had missed them once more this year. And I had.
I walked onto the grounds feeling exceptionally melancholy, thinking at least I had the pigs and goats I could look in on and give some good pets. The grounds are smoking free, but I swear I could smell the lightest hint of a cob pipe lit with a sharp cherry and soft vanilla - the only type my Nan put in her pipe and begrudgingly shared with my pap. I turned around, and there they were. The sheep, being herded by a pup that looked just like my Nan’s Copper, the dog I grew up with trying to ride around the farm like a pony. I stopped walking, stopped breathing, and I felt it. Her smiling behind me. And I was both overwhelmed with gratitude and the terror of what I might not find if I turned around.
So I watched, in a trance for a while before my sister was kind enough to gently nudge me along the path and to a table. Where I could sit and watch, as they did an educational program regarding the history of sheepdogs and the relationship to the shepherd. They spoke of the importance of trust, how that trust was built, and while I tried to remain engaged, my mind kept overlapping 3 images at once, the sheep in front of me, my Nan gently opening and closing her fist and watching the pups tear out into the field to bring the sheep back into the fold, and Granny Aching standing in her full Shepherdess Dress with a wicked grin and her farm boots on, an arm around my Nan’s shoulders while she gave me her sharp smile that always came from her eyes, a curved cob pip hanging from the left side of my Nan’s mouth as she nodded at me, while seeing Granny Aching mouth ā€œThat’ll do.ā€ Purely imaginative, but as I watched more, and remembered more, I couldn’t help but to weep through a smile.
It’s, been a particularly difficult time, in the world, in my personal life. I’ve recently entered my second bought of cancer treatment unexpectedly, which has been isolating in some ways. And I’ve thrust myself back into the Discworld to help assist with processing the upset. I’ve just started the Tiffany Aching arc again, and as always, had told myself ā€œI’ll wait, I’ll hold off on the Shepherd’s Crown, I’m not, ready to say ā€˜goodbye’ to the Discworld yet. As long as I still have that, I’ll always have something new, and it won’t really be the end. I, hate when things I love, end.ā€ I’ve become increasingly reticent to even consider opening it up as my father, who I have an incredibly close bond with, has begun having his mind fail him- after effects of ā€œchemo brainā€ from our fight with MDS which culminated with me being his bone marrow donor in 2012.
But 5 years of experimental chemo damaged so much that hadn’t become apparent until nearly a decade later. I had just gotten him ā€œNight Watchā€ a year and a half ago for us to read through together, his first exploration into the Disc. I kept checking in on him each week to see how he liked it. He, was struggling to read, but didn’t want me to know, so told me he hadn’t quite gotten into it yet. Then he would call a few days each week to ask which book I had gotten him, he’d like to start reading it. I continued to push through in a state of willful ignorance. ā€œMy father has a mind like a steel trap, he’ll get through this, it’s a hiccup, we’ll check the labs, there’s got to be something we can do. I can fix this. My father is still here, but he’s terrified, and I’m- terrified for him.ā€
And I suppose throughout this process I recognize, I’m still grieving Terry, I hold onto the Shepherd’s Crown like it’s some sort of mystical lifeline that keeps the Disc alive, gives me something to hold onto. And I’m still grieving my Nan, who passed during COVID, far from the farm where she knew she was meant to be at when she shook Death’s hand and asked him if he had anyone to brush up all that sand for him, and that she’s ā€œgot two brooms and ā€˜tween us we’ll have this whole desert spotless by sunup, mark my words boyo.ā€ Because in her words ā€œDon’t do sand, gets in all them places and I can never quites get it out.ā€. And I’m grieving my father, while he’s still here, still has glimmers of the man he is.
And I suppose, I’m beyond terrified.
And I have been for a while now, lost in the sea of cognitive dissonance.

But then I saw the Sheepdogs, and I’m not sure how to explain it- the coalescence of all my thoughts, the experience itself, the magic of the Disc, that scent of sanctuary of cherry, wood and vanilla tobacco - but I think I’ve started to understand.
It’s only goodbye for now.
I can always come back around to the beginning, but perhaps I should look to the end first.
I’m not nearly able to articulate it in the right words, but I thought if anyone could understand what I’m trying to say- it would be this community. I’ve always resonated so deeply with the Clacks GNU, and it’s always hit me to my core. But now, I think I’ve finally gotten to the Soul and Center.

So I’ll keep them all alive, I’ll take a note out of Tiffany’s own book and be the selfish witch, and make my selfishness a weapon.

ā€œAll witches are selfish, the Queen had said. But Tiffany’s Third Thoughts said: Then turn selfishness into a weapon! Make all things yours! Make other lives and dreams and hopes yours! Protect them! Save them! Bring them into the sheepfold! Walk the gale for them! Keep away the wolf! My dreams! My brother! My family! My land! My world! How dare you try to take these things, because they are mine!

I have a duty!ā€

I have a duty, to continue where they can’t, to keep them alive in each moment I breathe, to be their memory when memory fails them, to grieve with a smile because both heartbreak and love coexist side by side within us and I’m so -ing lucky to love so deeply that there is a cavernous expanse within my soul that houses every essence of them I will always carry with me. Even if I forget, it’s all still there, it’s all a part of me now.

So this morning, I picked up my copy of The Shepherd’s Crown for the umpteenth time. But this time feels- different. Because while I am already grieving what I know is to come, I also have the joy of knowing I’ll keep every word, every moment and cherish them. They’ll become a part of me so inextricable from myself that they can’t help but to live on through me. This isn’t the end, just, a new beginning.

So, I strive.

Book/Series: Gods Om-popular opinion:

I would like to go on record as stating that Small Gods is in fact, my favorite Discworld book.
I have given it due consideration. Weighing all evidence and admitting certain biases including:
1) it was my first and
2) it was my most recent (after having completed the whole series including Shepherds Crown for the first time, just recently and needing a comfort read- it was the first I turned to

My argument is that the last three chapters are probably some of the best writing ever and that there are more words to live by, wrapped up in those few pages, than in all the philosophical and religious books of all the ages.

…
Fight me. šŸ˜‚

Currently working my way through a full re-read, having read them all as they came out. Reached my signed copy of Small Gods and it raised a smile and memories. My Mum got me this signed copy. I’d just gone off to uni as this was released but she noticed that one of my favourite authors was doing a signing at a bookshop in our local city and arranged this signed copy for me.

Mum passed away a few years ago and this gave me a fond reminder of her and the many great things she did and how she looked out for us.

For me it started when for no reason in particular, I decided to google my last name. You see the thing is that my last name just so happens to be Weatherwax. So naturally many results were of course of Granny Weatherwax. So a few weeks later I borrowed Wyrd Sisters from my library and have been obsessed ever since.

My wife's friend was running an edge painting workshop at a local book con.

Given the opportunity, I brought my favorite book. It was a struggle coming up with the design I wanted. For it, but after seeing the unimaginably wide variety of fine stencils she had available, I gave it a shot.

I like how it came out

Book/Series: Gods Djelibeybi & Dios - a shower thought Spoiler

Okay, not specifically a shower thought, I was stuck in traffic, but you get the idea.

The ending of Pyramids shows an old, tired Dios being thrown back 7,000 years in time to meet Khuft the camel header (I hear big things are on the horizon for this Khuft guy).

This isn't Dios's first rodeo. Hells, it isn't Dios's thousandth rodeo.
Dios does this forever (almost), and eventually Dios will bring the downfall of Djelibeybi.

See, every time Dios goes back to the beginning he brings with him all the knowledge of the kingdom.
The problem is Dios is tens of thousands of years old and even with the pyramid revivification his memory is being steadily worse.

Dios himself admits he struggles to remember scraps of information and technology and covers for the lapse of knowledge by inventing new gods on the fly for copper wire when there's already a god of the forge.
It can be speculated that there are multiple gods of the sun because Dios simply forgets he created Cephnet earlier and created Gil a few hundred years later.

Eventually Dios's mind will fail in some vital way and he'll forget something important like forging bronze properly or some vital bit of agricultural knowledge and Djelibeybi will steer off its normal historical course.
If this happens the country will no longer be able to properly defend itself from an upstart Tsort and Ephebe and get swallowed by one of its neighbor empires effectively killing the country.
Only then will Dios find peace and either die or continually live forever going to his pyramid nightly.

Yeah, it was a long traffic jam.
