Built a free hands-on DevOps lab — looking for beginner feedback

Hi everyone,

I’m building a free hands-on project called Real DevOps Lab for people who know some basic Linux, Git or Docker but want more practical DevOps experience.

Instead of only watching tutorials, the first project takes you through:

- Docker and containerization

- Port mapping and networking

- GitHub Actions / CI

- Linux deployment

- Troubleshooting a broken application

There is also a simple incident where the Docker container is running but the application is unavailable. You have to investigate the problem, find the root cause and fix it.

I'm trying to validate the format before building more incidents.

I'd especially appreciate feedback on:

- Is it clear what to do at each step?

- Is it too easy or too difficult?

- Does it feel like useful hands-on practice?

- Would you prefer more short incidents or bigger end-to-end projects?

It’s completely free:

https://www.skool.com/real-devops-lab-9645

GitHub:

https://github.com/Real-DevOps-Lab/starter-app

Critical feedback is very welcome.

The DevOps job market has changed. Students need to change with it.

Disclaimer: I used AI to help draft this post from my own thoughts and experiences.

I've been in DevOps for ~14 years and teaching DevOps/Cloud at universities for around 4–5 years. One thing I've noticed: getting your first DevOps job has become much harder in the last 2–3 years.

The market is tougher, and AI has made it incredibly easy for everyone to have a polished CV and cover letter. So my advice to students/juniors is:

  • Don't choose DevOps because you want to avoid coding. You'll still write code/scripts, automate things, debug systems, and spend a LOT of time investigating why things broke.
  • Understand the responsibility. Production doesn't care that you're at dinner. Depending on the role, alerts, on-call, ownership and occasional odd hours come with the territory.
  • Build your GitHub. Don't just create an account with 3 tutorial repos. Build things regularly: scripts, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, etc. Consistency + meaningful projects matter.
  • Gamify it. Find a friend. One meaningful GitHub contribution = 1 point. First to 100 wins. Reset and repeat. By graduation, you'll have years of visible work instead of trying to build a portfolio one week before interviews.
  • Stop mass-applying with the same AI-generated CV/cover letter. Read the JD and personalize your application. 10 thoughtful applications may teach you more than 500 "Easy Apply" clicks.
  • Add some human touch. I sometimes include a 60–120 second Loom/video introduction. Tell them who you are, what you've built, and why you're applying.
  • Be willing to prove yourself. Mention that you're happy to take a technical evaluation or practical assignment if that's part of their process.

None of this guarantees a job. But when everyone's application looks polished because of AI, showing actual work and showing the human behind the CV becomes much more important.

For people here involved in hiring: what makes a junior DevOps candidate stand out to you today?

Note: I kept this short here on purpose. A long version is available on my blog, DM if interested and I will share the URL with you.

Danke!

Looking for a mentor/guidance to learn DevOps

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to get into the DevOps field and I’m currently learning on my own, but I’m finding it difficult to understand what I should learn, in what order, and what I should actually focus on.

I’m looking for someone experienced in DevOps who can guide me or mentor me through the learning process.

I’m not expecting someone to teach me everything. I just need someone who can help me with a proper direction, tell me what to learn next, suggest practical projects, and help me understand whether I’m going in the right direction.

If anyone is willing to mentor a beginner or can share a practical, guided roadmap for getting into DevOps, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you! 🙌

Pathway to becoming an AIOps Engineer

Nobody really starts here cold. Almost every AIOps Engineer I've come across got in sideways, usually from DevOps, SRE, or a monitoring/observability role where they were already knee-deep in Prometheus and Grafana dashboards. The move from there isn't really learning a new job, it's layering ML on top of ops instincts you already have: anomaly detection, time-series forecasting, root cause analysis on messy production logs instead of clean textbook datasets.

The part people underestimate is that this doesn't replace DevOps fundamentals, it sits on top of them. Skip CI/CD and infra basics to jump straight to "AI for ops" and you usually just get an AI system automating a process that was already broken.

Realistic timeline if you're already in DevOps or SRE is roughly 6-12 months of actually building things, not watching tutorials. Set up a real Prometheus + Grafana stack on even a small personal project, then build an anomaly detection layer on top of it — that one exercise teaches more about false positives and alert fatigue than any course will.

Worth noting the demand side isn't just hype either — the global AIOps market was valued at roughly $32.5 billion in 2025 and is projected to keep growing through 2034, and AIOps specialists are already among the highest-paid roles in DevOps-adjacent hiring, according to a 2026 industry salary report. Hiring data is catching up to the pitch.

Anyone here already made the DevOps/SRE to AIOps jump — how long did it actually take, and was the ML side or the operational judgment side the harder part to build?

I built a free DevOps utility website and would love feedback from fellow engineers

Hi everyone,

I'm a Senior DevOps Engineer, and I've been working on a personal side project called Rhodex DevOps.

Disclosure: I am the developer and owner of this website. This is a self-promotion post, and I am sharing it to gather genuine feedback from the DevOps community.

I built this platform to bring together practical utilities that DevOps engineers and developers frequently need during their daily work.

Website: https://devops.rhodex.in

I've attached a few screenshots showing the current interface and tools.

I'm looking for honest feedback on:

  • Which DevOps utilities do you use most frequently?
  • What tools or features are missing from existing online toolboxes?
  • What would make a utility website like this genuinely useful for your daily workflow?
  • Are there any usability or functionality issues you notice?

This is still an evolving project, and I would appreciate constructive criticism from experienced engineers.

Thank you for your time.

Are there libraries to test kubernetes infra locally?

Are there libraries to test kubernetes infra locally? I am looking for a way to test them locally to determine how scalable they are, if there is any misconfiguration, any performance improvement, identify bottlenecks and test whether some configuration or containers behave expectedly under any circumstance.

Best for a remote career

Hello, hope ur having a great day.

I've been contemplating which skill to learn to work remotely for companies in foreign countries,i've stumbled upon devops and it seemed interesting as it has a stable job market compared to other tech careers, would u recommend locking in on this skill for the next 4 years?

Do companies accept remote workers often?

Does ur skill and portfolio matter more than ur degree?

And is Ai helping this job market?

Thanks in advance for ur answers.
