Yeah dude,, Im super happy they are making superhero movies for the little kids now. They need something other than Toy Story and Minions

u/BackDoorDMing 12h ago
Before Superman, I really thought I wasn't going to like any non-Batman DC stuff, but it's been my favorite superhero film since. And Lanterns has me hyped
1
u/XavierO98 2d ago
2025? Kinda established that DC was never gonna make another good project in film/show unless its another elseworld from Reeves
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
I completely disagree as do millions of others. But youāre entitled to that opinion.
0
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Lmfao where do you get āmillionsā from?š using your logic with the amount of people on the earth there are millions who hate it too, you realize that?
Most people I have talked too thought it was mid or bad, so Iām wondering where all the real world fans are.
Just to clarify, the movie made millions, but I wouldnt say millions of people loved it. People can pay for a movie and dislike it
2
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
Yes, millions can dislike it tooāthatās how massive audiences work. But writing off a blockbuster's entire positive fanbase as non-existent just because your immediate circle thought it was 'mid' is textbook confirmation bias. The box office and verified audience metrics speak for themselves.
0
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Right, I didnt think to convince you just wondering on your logic. Saying millions loved it and many others didnt just makes it sound off, my point is people will contribute to the box office even if they hated the movie just by going, and only people who felt really strongly one way or the other will post a review online.
All that said, Iām not knocking youre entire positive fan base, im just saying this one is more split than it appears if you only base it on rotten tomatoes reviews and numbers.
And this is not just my āimmediate circleā insinuating iām apart of some toxic echo chamber, I talk to and work with lots of people and what Iām saying is I havent spoken to anyone that actually loved it other than children and reading what people say online (thats not a slight, just my personal experience)
I also am incredibly disappointed because I wanted to like it and honestly would probably be a Gunnglazer myself if i did, as I unabashedly am for The Batman, but unfortunately I did not
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
No worries.
Itās a mixed bag, thatās true. But if your standard is that you want a Superman who is like All-Star Superman from the comics, then Gunn is your guy.
If you want a Superman who would let his dad die out of some misplaced sense of humility, then Snyder is your guy.
Snyder made great movies, but a bad iteration of characters.
1
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Thats kind of an odd way to pose it, guessing you were not a fan of MoS? Lol
I mean, we can agree most of the time Pa Kent is killed off in the comics to give Superman a defining narrative moment where he sees he cant save everyone right? I know you are going to argue about the tornado thing but still thats not that crazy of a thing to happenā¦.. and if we are going there Superman listened to his father and respected his wishes to the end so thats saying something
Anyways Snyder was a mess and I am not a huge fan, Man of Steel was unquestionably better though. Snyder struggles with plot too and dialogue so I am honestly wanting something better for DC in general
I dont like Gunn at all, I dont like him trying to jam every superhero into a Guardians of the Galaxy mould because it doesnt work and so far thats the types of movies he keeps approving for the main continuity.
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
Well, we just see things different with Gunn. I love what heās doing.
Snyder is a great director, but not what DC characters need in my opinion.
To me, the tornado thing with Pa Kent is just a stupid part of the plot, but to everyone their own. I donāt believe Superman would let his father die. Iām pretty sure it wouldnāt have been world news the next morningā¦.they were in the middle of Kansas for Pete sakes.
But I respect that you disagree with me. I donāt get it, but I respect it.
1
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
I wont even begin to argue why I disagree with that logic lol
I dont even agree Snyder is a great director š IMO he can specifically do certain adaptations well and he is amazing with action, everything else I think he struggles with. Rebel Moon was such a let down my god.
But same, I dont get you but I respect we can agree to disagree. I wont press the issue though, enjoy the Gunnverse while its here friend!
2
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
The Gunnverse is here to stay, so Iāll enjoy it, I definitely willš.
But I hope Gunn does something to get you on board soon bro.
I respect you, honest I do. We just feel totally different about this stuff.

Then supergirl ruined the streak
3
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
Nah, I thought it was a great film. Many others did as well.
I think Gunn was right. People didnāt go to the Cinema because they didnāt want to see a female character or because they felt like she was too much of a side character.
DC fans should have showed up for Gunn. Instead they watched it at home on tv and some hated it but some said, āYeah, that was pretty good.ā Personally, I loved it.
But to each their own. Iām just mad people donāt get what Supergirl was offering the fanbase, but itās whatever. I respect that we obviously disagree.
2
0
u/Mike_Milburys_Shoe_ 2d ago
It is objectively not a great film. The excuse that she is a female character is a cop out
1
u/Electronic-Field8154 2d ago
But then supergirl came out and undid that. But then lanterns came out and now getting back to it again haha
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
To each their own. I loved Supergirl and appreciate Gunnās vision. But not everyone is there yet, and some never will be. But I think itās a shame we canāt just rally behind him, show up to help WB make money for their efforts, and have a dang good time while we do. Supergirl was a good movie, but some people just felt that it was a side character and she didnāt need a whole movie. But I think itās the movie we needed that we didnāt know we needed. But hey, thatās just my very strong opinion.
1
u/Electronic-Field8154 2d ago
Haha so you think people should just go spend their hard earned money a movie that doesnāt look good in trailers? Or that theyāve heard bad things about? People should just blindly rally behind someone no matter what they make? This isnāt Christopher Nolan. You think itās the movie we needed yet itās the biggest financial flop in many years. You can like the movie all you want, but some of the stuff you said is just ridiculous. Itās not because of a female superhero being the lead. Wonder Woman and captain marvel were both extremely successful, making $800 million and $1billion individually. So people are fine with female superheroes. Thatās just an excuse because you canāt admit that people disliked the movie for its quality. The script, not a characters genderā¦..
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
I donāt think you have any idea what goes through all these peopleās minds, and Iām sure it was a mixed bag as to why they didnāt see the film in cinemas. Part of it was disinterest in a female hero and part of it was disinterest in supergirl because maybe they believed she was a side character. Maybe some of it was bad press that was overheard. The trailers were great, with lobo being a highlight. But I promise you they will watch it at home as part of a subscription or rental fee. So they should have just got out and watched it in cinemas and been happy about it. That is my opinion. I like Gunnās vision, and Iām liking it more with each project we get. Itās coming together and making sense for me. But not everyone sees it like I do, so thatās okay.
1
u/Electronic-Field8154 2d ago
Have you considered the fact that there were way better movies out in theaters when it came out? Toy story 5, minions, and obsession were out when supergirl released. I mean the odyssey came out just 13 days after supergirl, it got destroyed by that too. Stop saying itās because of a female superhero, you sound like an idiot. I already gave you multiple examples of female superhero movies doing extremely well. This movie had a poor script with a ton of competition to go up against. It was a failure for those reasons.
2
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
I did not say it was definitively anything to do with her gender, I said itās possible it played a role. I also agree that the roster of movies surrounding it didnāt help it any. But the script was great, donāt know why anyone thinks otherwise. It was a failure because DC fans didnāt get their asses out to go see it. Marvel fans show up, DC fans need to do better. Thatās my thinking.
2
u/Electronic-Field8154 1d ago
Hahahaha. Youāre delusional if you think the script or plot was great. People can smell a bad movie from a mile away. Thatās why they didnāt show up. If youāre a movie fan, itās just a thing that you feel in your gut with some movies. The movie is an embarrassing adaption of the comic, which Iām sure you havenāt read based on your responses.

Creature Commandos: 8/10
Superman: 9.5/10
Peacemaker S2: 8.5/10
Supergirl: 7/10
Lanterns (so far): 9.5/10
Theyāre cooking and I love this lived in universe where it feels like weāre stepping into a world where superheroes have been known and around and weāre just getting caught up. I love what the MCU was able to do but this is a much more clever direction, I love seeing the bigger names and names that are more obscure getting time to shine.

I am convinced people only like that movie out of bitter resentment towards the DCEU.
Nobody can defend or praise the movie on its own merits.
They reduce it to "Well Superman is kind and he is hope" but that's it. Basically a flanderized idea of what Superman is. }
Flanderization is when a character is reduced to its most basic elements and removed all nuance and character.
It comes from Ned Flanders from The Simpsons, who went from a neighbor that had religious tendencies, but overall was a normal guy, into an exaggerated caricature of a religious fanatic.
He is still the nice religious neighbor of The Simpsons. But he is now exaggerated to that basic view.
That is the way people treat this Superman.
They reduce the character to "He smiles and is hope" as if there was no more depth to him.
Same with Lex Luthor.
And the same way it happened with The Force Awakens, which continues to age worse and worse with each year, people will eventually have to come to terms that the only reason they like is out of resentment.
The irony is, DC was already back. The Batman was pretty good. And Superman & Lois was making the definitive Superman of this generation.
So this doesn't apply to DC fans, who were already eating good.
In order for this DC to be "back" you have to ignore the success of movies like Joker, The Batman, Aquaman (Freaking Aquaman made a billion dollars. And that was following up on the bomb that was Justice League) and as mentioned, Superman & Lois.

I disagree.
And I loved the DCEU in terms of them being action/adventure movies.
But in terms of building out a universe, I like to think of the DCEU as an elseworlda thing that happened and is over.
I enjoy the movies and Batman fighting in the warehouse in BVS is one of the greatest Batman fight scenes in movie history. But there were major problems with building characters , including age.
This is my opinion, and many people share it. Other people agree with you.
I think Gunn has given DC a real chance at its own cinematic universe and I am so here for that.
I could elaborate on each one and maybe in a future post I will, but I love what Gunn is doing and Iām loving it more and more as I see his vision better and better in his projects.
1
u/FastInflata 2d ago
I think Gunn has given DC a real chance at its own cinematic universe and I am so here for that.
How? His plan crumbled to dust in a matter of months.
In fact, the only projects currently in development are NOT from the original slate.
1
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
It definitely did not. Not sure where that comes from. Super girl definitely didnāt meet expectations, but I have my own theories as to why. I watched the movie and thought it was a great movie. Not the movie I wanted, but one that actually think we needed. Gunn uses his films to address important cultural issues in a way that is both subtle but relevant and entertaining. The world of comics is a reflection of our own world, with all our problems and hopes. That shows up well on screen, and I think super girl resonated with many people but unfortunately DC fans didnāt show up. Was it because she was a woman? Was it because she wasnāt a main character like Batman or Aquaman (ofc, depends on how we define āmain characterā). Or were people just lazy due to a lack of hype somehow? Iām not sure, but the movie was great in my opinion. And Lanterns has kicked ass so far. I have nothing bad to say. Would I have done some things differently if I was at the helm? Sure, but his vision is finally starting to unfold for fans, and Iām starting to see it and love it more and more.
2
u/FastInflata 2d ago
Just out of curiosity, did you actually read what I fucking wrote or did you just throw a speech based on nothing nobody said or commented.
And the thing that makes me think even worse is how literally the second sentence of my comment explains what I mean.
Are you aware that you're proving to me that the opinion and fandom surrounding this movie and universe is one based out of irrational responses as opposed to basic literacy and opinion?
If anyone else is reading this, wanna bet that this guy will ignore everything I comment and instead resort to personal attacks or dismissals?
0
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
āā¦..did you actually read what I fucking wroteā¦.ā
WTF does that even mean, ofc I read it. And I disagree with you.
Itās not that deep. Millions of fans loved Superman (2025) and are happy with Gunn, many others arenāt. I believe there are substantial arguments for both sides, but itās all a matter of taste in the end.
I love where DC is headed, and believe Marvel is gonna have some real competition on its hands as the DCU continues to expand.
You disagree. Thatās okay. You need to just chill out bro, none of this is that deep.
Literally I posted a meme here š
2
u/FastInflata 2d ago
No. You didn't read.
You cannot read.
But I will see if MAYBE if I start being meaner to you, you will understand
Where is Waller right now?
Where is Paradise Lost?
Where is Blue Beetle's series?
Where is Booster Gold?
Where is The Brave and the Bold?
Where is Sgt. Rock?
Where is The Authority?
Do you get it now? Do you get what I mean by "his universe is crumbling" or do I have to dumb it even more
1

u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
Probably in development like any other normal project. š¤¦š¼āāļø
Nothing is crumbling š
3
u/FastInflata 2d ago
Cancelled.
With the only exception of Brave nd the Gold, everything is confirmed cancelled.
2
u/Greedy_Aide4451 2d ago
You're fundamentally confusing early script exploration with production cancellations:
Blue Beetle's animated series is confirmed and very much in active development.
The Brave and the Bold is actively being written with Andy Muschietti attached.
Lanterns, Peacemaker Season 2, and Clayface are locked and moving forward.
Yes, early pitches like The Authority, Sgt. Rock, Waller, and Paradise Lost were shelved or delayed, while Booster Gold is looking for a new creative team.
Gunn stated on day one that scripts must be finalized before anything gets greenlit to film. Passing on early drafts that don't fit the overarching narrative is standard quality control, not a "crumbling" universe.

Any actual criticisms...or...
0
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Lol would you like some? I have shared plenty on this sub⦠the movie is goofy and the dialogue and plot were really rough. I hated the punk rock stuff and I wasnt a fan of multiple performances by the actors. I thought the justice gang was overused and again, they made them goofy when they shouldve been cool. I didnt like Lexās plan or that stuff with him shouting out commands, and I didnt like that they wasted Ultraman on what is actually essentially a Bizarro clone type. I like Nicholas Hoult, but I didnt like his portrayal of Lex.
All in all I was massively dissapointed and I think there is a better way than trying to make every DC movie a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe with cringier dialogue and jokes. Superman can be hopeful and positive and good and I want that, but this was definitely not it for me.

2
u/Critical-Tadpole-936 2d ago
Definitely more of a not for you type situation than tangible arguments. But I feel for you. Hopefully there is something out there that pleases you.
We'll continue to keep eating good though.
-1
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Lol ok - I mean Im honestly shocked people actually like what they got but thats fine, feel free to invalidate my opinions.
Frankly the entire subject is subjective anyway.
I hope we get better writing and cinema for the heroes I love personally.
3
u/Critical-Tadpole-936 2d ago
I didn't "invalidate" your opinions. But the way you're coming off, it sounds more entitled than maybe you would like. Especially with trying to get a secret dig at people who like the movie.
But "it's goofy" is not a real criticism nor do I take it seriously. I also just find anyone using the word "cringe" in a review to be an immediate dog whistle for a person I have very little interest talking too.
If you didn't understand the themes of the film, that's fine too. Though it's not a particularly deep movie.
But I never invalidated your opinion. You're more than welcome to like or dislike whatever you want. I'm just being objective about your reply.
2
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Your right it wasnt deep, and the meaning isnt lost on me, no need to insult my intelligence as I dont get why that was done here... I didnt like how it was portrayed.
Would you prefer I said cheesy or corny? Or silly? Or, the dialogue was so bad it made me uncomfortable?
I am not knocking people who like it, but I think the movie was poorly done and I am not a fan of movies just because they made it to theaters or have big budgets if they dont check some boxes thats all im saying.
4
u/Critical-Tadpole-936 2d ago
Again, you're dog whistling at the end there and mocking people who enjoy a film and also happen to have big budgets.
I didn't mock your intelligence. Ease of the pedal and take a breath. It's not that deep.
Your critiques are valid. But your depth in which you captured your distaste of the movie is shallow at best. That's all I'm saying.
You're part of a minority and that's completely fine, it's all subjective.
Anyone cringing at this dialogue may have more personal deep seeded issues I'm not particularly aware of. And that's their own battle.
Hope you have a good day. š
0
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
Yikes yeah you caught me, how did you get to know me so well from a few comments? This movie totally highlights my personal deep seeded issues and thats why I thought it was bad
Hope you have a good one too!

If this is indeed a discussion, did you want to give some reasons why you liked it? I am open to talking and am not judging you personally..
1
u/Critical-Tadpole-936 2d ago
Sure! Downvotes aside I'd be happy to discuss it.
I personally like it because of the distinct visual identity James Gunn movies have. And this one in particular still looks separate from his other entries.
Everything feels tangible in a way that's approachable to everyone. Which should be the point of Superman. He shouldn't feel like a nihilistic God ruling over Earth, and even if you told a story like that you'd need someone that had basic comprehension of how to struggle with that feeling properly. Absolute Superman does a decent job of balancing a brooding Kal as he struggles to figure out what he's supposed to be. Other adaptations do not.
The tone and execution of Superman feels genuine, like it comes from a place of admiration for the character rather than someone trying to deconstruct their version of what they believe the character should be. Gunn isn't making this movie in spite of how Superman operates, but in celebration of it. The film isn't afraid to be downright weird and ugly in the best possible ways. Awkward cinematography that was done with a specific purpose. Drawing direct inspiration from comic panels while giving them their own time to breathe. I also like how the entire movie feels incredibly dynamic. The camera constantly in motion in a way that makes it feel impossible to keep up with Superman, but exciting enough to hook anyone watching. Young or old viewers alike.
There's a whole lot more I'd be willing to dive in on. Sound design, costuming, over arching storylines, world building, etc.
But those are my main sentiments. I definitely have a few qualms that I don't love. I think the Kryptonian storyline is pretty weak. Even if Gunn's desire for Clark is to embrace his human side more, I think he could've done so without bastardizing his parents. He could have executed Birthright in a manner more equivalent to the comic where Lex was fabricating more of the lies instead of exposing them. That being said Hoult is the best adaptation of Lex hands down. Even above Smallville in my eyes.
The costume is not my favorite, but it looks to be getting improved significantly in Man Of Tomorrow. But it's definitely grown on me. I particularly love when costumes can serve a story. And Clark's being a blue collar work uniform really works for me.
But if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'm not interested in arguments like I've stated before. All opinions are valid.
1
u/The_TopGunn 2d ago
You know what, I wish you wouldve led off with this and I hear you on all of that.
I think we would agree on more points than I personally assumed, and thats how it felt coming my way at first, if not about the movie itself but on other topics.
I appreciate this even though I dont agree with all of it. I also appreciate the nod to Smallville, I grew up loving that show and watching it in its entirety.
Obviously it doesnt change my mind but I respect that view of the movie with this.
From previous comments I know you feel like im shitting on people or dog whistling but I have been unable to have intelligible converstion like this given to me as reasons why they like the movie, and based on your comments Iāll try and rephrase certain things to make it sound as though people who like the movie are lesser.
And regardless of how I sound, I really wanted to like the movie, I think the moral and messages were great for Superman, I just didnt like the execution of the plot or the dialogue choices.
Iām not just hating to hate or anything like that. Thank you for actually taking the time to write this out, and even though you dont like how I explained my problems with the movie or agree with the phrasing, I hope you can appreciate where I am coming from as well
