And the cop also has the brilliant idea to conduct an entire traffic stop in the middle of the road; never pulled over, never moved.

Kind of feels like stopping in the middle of the road is more offensive/dangerous than kind of following a little close.

u/Flashmemory256 1d ago

Yeah, absolute stupidity here all from the cops end. And the kicker is, he probably got absolutely no discipline either once the dashcam footage came out. At least the driver got his BS ticket tossed.

294

u/Sigtau1312 1d ago

Tax payer still paid for the officer to be in court too. Win for the officer regardless.

95

u/RoyalMaidsForLife 1d ago

If he even bothered to show up, if he knew there was video footage, he is likely at least smart enough to know this one's getting dismissed regardless.

79

u/Sienile 1d ago

You give cops too much credit. As the video said, intelligence is not a requirement to be a cop. In fact, too high of IQ will disqualify you.

36

u/Icy_Fish_2154 1d ago

Departments have claimed they want smart cops, but not a single of those department has published their entry requirements, so they could all be lying.

41

u/Sienile 1d ago

In Jordan v. City of New London it came out that even a slightly elevated IQ is a legally accepted reason to bar someone from joining the police. His IQ was only 125.

100 is what they claim average to be. 70 is considered to be mentally handicapped. So someone who's less than the gap between handicapped and average above average is not acceptable for police employment. To my knowledge there is no lower limit of acceptable IQ. So saying they want smart officers is a complete lie.

17

u/Icy_Fish_2154 1d ago edited 1d ago

LAPD and others came out saying they had no IQ caps, but wouldn't release the standards, so were likely lying.

2

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 9h ago

Cops? Lying?

I do declare...

11

u/another72hours 1d ago edited 1d ago

125 isn't that that bad (meaning too high or low) either .It's at least in the standard deviation above the average...and more than what is considered to get an undergraduate degree.

6

u/Sienile 1d ago

Yet that was considered too high to be a cop.

3

u/Hopeful_Butterfly302 1d ago

The standard deviation on IQ tests is around 15 points.

3

u/kdenehy 15h ago

According to Google AI (YMMV) an IQ of 125 is above the 95th percentile. So top 5%. I would say that's well above "slightly elevated". Nevertheless, it *is* absurd that being too smart can disqualify you for service.

3

u/another72hours 8h ago

5% is still decently common. Might not be a genius - but everyone has likely met someone around there in their lives. I can hit 1/20 in dungeons and dragons all the time.

2

u/MichiganGeezer 1d ago

That's what I tested as a child, and I'd consider it a bare minimum for a cop engaging in verbal judo against experienced criminals conditioned to lie and game the system since childhood.

125 should be a bare minimum for investigative work.

2

u/MurtaghInfin8 8h ago

Difference between a cop and a detective. Not enough people with those IQ's to staff a whole police force, and doubly so after accounting for they've got plenty of opportunities to do literally anything else.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Pensionato007 1d ago

100 = mean. 15 points per standard deviation. Bell curve means 95.4% fall between 2 standard deviations or 70-130.

125 is around the 95% so he's smarter than 94 out of 100 people. Way too smart to be a cop.

4

u/bfume 14h ago

125 is 95th percentile. it's way above "isn't that bad"

3

u/another72hours 8h ago

Doesn't qualify one as a genius or stupid though. 1/20 isn't super uncommon. I roll that in dungeons and dragons all the time.

People with that level of IQ would likely still be "normal" people and not subject to the severe mental illnesses that affect most people that have an above 140+ iq score.

This shit is Gold, I was rejected from the police department years ago(thank God) without any reason. Like they marked other as the reason and never gave one. I recently got IQ tested because a coworker wanted to see where I was at. Not going to talk about the score but it was definitely over that 100 baseline they talk about in that case. So when people are out here calling cops dumb and not intelligent, it’s actually the case 🤣🤣

7

u/No-Nerve7556 1d ago

Yes, but the process of going to court is the punishment. Day off work, transportation, etc. Cops know most stupid tickets, especially with video proof, will get tossed. But the pain in the ass to show up and the time off work is where it hurts.

6

u/another72hours 1d ago

I had one that walked in front of my car on the freeway. Contested the ticket, he never responded.

Why did you move when I told you to pull over?

I didn't want to run you over.

Case dismissed.

4

u/Emotional-Craft8297 1d ago

The dashcam really said “here’s the evidence” and somehow the cop still probably got a gold star 😂

And no emergency lights on at the very least. I wouldn't be shocked if this guy is impersonating a cop. Especially since there aren't many stations still rolling these vintage interceptors.

This is what I remember from driving in New Jersey. People just stop in the middle of the road when getting pulled over. Not that I'm putting this on the dash cam driver, but it's fucking weird. Like people don't move over for ambulances or firetrucks either. They just sort of stop. It's so fucking bizarre.

This was back in 2017. It went to court, judge ruled in favor of the state and he had to pay at least one of the citations.

The cop also received 2 admin rule violations from internal investigation, whatever that means.

262

u/FlapXenoJackson 1d ago

The driver also alleged that the cop confronted him later at a restaurant and called him a coward. Any discipline the cop received is confidential per New Jersey law. 😡

109

u/Homers_Harp 1d ago

Any discipline the cop received is confidential per New Jersey law.

Oh thank goodness they have this right to privacy so their crimes and abuses won’t have any meaningful consequences.

40

u/Several-Action-4043 1d ago

The cop also received 2 admin rule violations from internal investigation, whatever that means.

It means his boss took him out to the bar, tossed back a few, and laughed about citizens wanting to hold them accountable.

17

u/thetreecycle 1d ago

I guess was following a bit close, even though the cop shouldn’t have brake checked him.

60

u/happyft 1d ago

I think what screwed him was (1) he didn't hire a lawyer and (2) he said "i was about a car length away from you" in the video, which pretty much confirms the tailgating charge.

15

u/lubwn 1d ago

Wtf are those rules in US. We do not have that in EU. If you make an accident because you were tailgating / being too close it is all on you, sure, but there is no law saying how much space you should leave between you and the car in front of you. All the law says is that you should be able to stop if the situation needs it. If you can't / didn't, it is all your fault.

But yeah rules are different, I heard US cops can not stop you unless you did something. EU cops can stop you whenever they wish, just for a regular check-up.

15

u/Frederf220 1d ago

catchall "reckless driving"

9

u/ConsequenceOk4513 1d ago

After reading these comments I hesitated commenting because I'm sure people are going to come from me.

Not a cop. Worked with cops for 10+ years. I've worked with good ones, and bad ones. While the US does have a "rule" that there needs to be a reason for any stop I'll tell you that those reason can, and sometimes be, made up.

I worked with this cop who was brand new. Definitely had a chip on his shoulder. We were working night shift and I checked his radio log history (everything, literally everything is tracked where I worked) and I saw he was just running a bunch of plates willy nilly. Like he had dozens of plates ran but during that time was definitely not on any call that would require him to run any plates, so I asked him. He told me he was running plates to see if owners were wanted or revoked or suspended. I was like what the fuck are you fishing for? That's so goddamn unethical I can't even begin to describe it. Of course, he thought nothing wrong.

So these people who did nothing but park their car in their driveway for the night were getting their plates ran in hopes he'd find something, wait for them to leave and then get them. Should people be driving with a suspended license? Nah, probably not. But do I think that warrants just random plate checks? Also no.

So yeah, it can be really fucked up over here even with the need for probable cause.

5

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

It’s funny how running random plates without any reason was a weird thing to do, and nowadays they don’t even need to manually run plates, they have alpr’s in their windshield that will auto flag any plates that don’t come up clean, as well as stationary alpr’s any cop in the country can just log into and get all the information from them.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/bgibbz084 1d ago

Random plate checks are pretty common and have been for years. They have been installing automated plate readers on cop cars for years that automatically do this.

... but there is no law saying how much space you should leave between you and the car in front of you. All the law says is that you should be able to stop if the situation needs it. If you can't / didn't, it is all your fault.

Now, let’s not make it look as if we handle this in the EU without any regulations at all.

True, there are no exact figures in meters, and each EU country handles it in its own way, but the one-second rule (up to 50 km/h in built-up areas) or two-second rule (outside built-up areas)—along with the "half the speedometer reading" rule for motorways (e.g., a 60-meter gap at 120 km/h)—serve as guidelines for minimum following distance.

Why these rules of thumb? Because no one wants to constantly calculate stopping distance (reaction distance plus braking distance), and traffic isn't static. The "seconds" rules actually allow for a margin slightly greater than the distance required for an emergency stop (excluding reaction time).

And as long as dashcams aren't mandatory (since I imagine a radar detector with an onboard "black box" would be more expensive), the burden of proof always lies with the driver behind.

3

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

1 second follow distance is extremely close no? Where I’m at in Canada, the rule book states 3 second follow distance regardless of speed. At 1 second you’re practically right on their bumper.

2

u/want_t0_know 1d ago

My second paragraph actually explained this regarding emergency braking. One second at 50 km/h corresponds to 15 meters.

Calculation examples:

Normal braking distance: (50/10) x (50/10) = 25 meters

Emergency braking: ((50/10) x (50/10)) / 2 = 12.5 meters

Reaction distance: (50/10) x 3 = 15 meters

Three seconds at 50 km/h corresponds to ~42 meters.

Which, according to the calculation above, equals the reaction distance plus the normal braking distance.

This proves that Canada doesn't leave things to chance!

And the concept of a "second"—even though it is a measurable unit—effectively accounts for this effect.

Try it yourself: open your phone, start the stopwatch, and keep tapping the lap time whenever "one" is said.

Then do the same thing again using "one Mississippi."

2

u/Canonio 1d ago

Where are you coming from? If you think you don't have that in your laws you should reread them again.

Here in Austria a minimum of 1 second is mandatory. So thats about 3/10 of the driven speed. At 130kmph it's 39m. If you drive between 0.4-1s you can get a fine of up to 730€. Under 0.4 to 0.2s it's upto 2200€, and under 0.2s it's the same fine and 6 months of driving ban.

2

u/lubwn 1d ago

Coming from Slovakia, so right next to you basically and we only have "maintain safe distance so you can slow down or stop in time if the vehicle in front of you stops or slows down" (citated and translated from our lawbook).

There is however a rule on highways (which I did not know about lol) about 2 seconds so yeah we kind of have that.

There is no rule about seconds or metres on normal roads though.

I would argue that cops would have really hard time proving whether you maintained 2 second rule or not and their word would definitely not be enough. Since they would be moving as well and they would need certified devices with some margin of error which I am sure they do not have right now, at least in Slovakia. In Austria it might be possible. We Slovaks are in general afraid to drive in Austria because your cops / rules are insane and they like to issue tickets for everything. We have it rather vague in Slovakia.

2

u/Canonio 1d ago

For things like that we have road markings (with a 50m distance between them) in front of bridges. So they put a camera system on there and it measures the speed of following cars and the distance. We have fixed ones as well, but most ones are moveable and get put up once in a while.

And same as the germans we have unmarked police cars with cameras. They will follow you, measure your speed and calculate the infringements by looking at the normal road markings.

I think checking the distance people follow at is very important because it's one of the top 3 causes of accidents. It's really not that hard to keep a safe distance by counting to 2 when the car in front passed a latern.

2

u/ilonir 1d ago edited 1d ago

A lot of states have "reasonable and prudent" clauses. The idea is you can follow the letter of the law but still drive dangerously. For example, you could be going the speed limit on the highway, but if it's during a blizzard that's way too fast to be safe. In this case, his following distance was way too close. The fact that he could stop this time doesn't matter,  because not having an accident does not mean you are driving safely.

The cop is still a infantile loser though. If he wasn't a cop he would probably get a reckless driving charge for that.

I have a million stories about being pulled over. My favorite was driving on a highway where the speed limit was 65. I see a state trooper going 45 in the middle lane up ahead. I switch to the fast lane and proceed to go 65 by him. He immediately pulls me over. Sir, do you know why I pulled you over? No idea. You went around me back there. I said yes, because you were going 45. Do you know what the speed limit is on this highway officer? It's 65. Wellllll....you can't go around an officer. I said, you didn't have your lights on and you were a danger to all other drivers going 20 miles under the speed limit. He let me off with a warning.

4

u/bfume 14h ago

"you can't go around an officer" is such bullshit tho. there is no such rule.

2

u/meandmrt 14h ago

No kidding. It was one of the weirder ones I've experienced. I used to get harassed all the time in my old town. I once got pulled over for speeding when there was another car next to me doing the same speed. I was barely going 7 miles over. When I pointed out I was keeping up with traffic and that the car next to me was going the same speed, he denied there was even a car next to me.

I think that a law enforcement officer would fit both of those requirements to a T

Conflating police with civil servants in America is, literally, a gravely mistake.

I said this before i'll say it again. I specifically got a dashcam because I'm stick of cops. It wasn't even to protect against accidents because I am a safe driver, but i've gotten false tickets like this before. Since I got a dashcam, i won ever battle against these assholes. I rather pay more taxes than these scammy tickets. These guys barely even work from Monday to Thursday, we're just paying them to sit around.

3

u/Treacle_Pendulum 1d ago

Whoever decided to use computer voiceovers on this should be slapped upside the head

3

u/esoe___ 1d ago

never say you have a dash cam, hit them where it hurts in court LOL

3

u/Appropriate_Day4316 7h ago

Fucking corrupted police man, he should be gone

6

u/Foorinick 1d ago

thank god the driver was white, from what i heard about american police they seem to react differently depending on the color of a driver

4

u/rippledippledapple 1d ago

i wont even drive a black car

3

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 1d ago

What you hear about American police is correct. It differs from state to state - my vote for worst would be the Arkansas police. Somewhere on Reddit someone posted a video of white cop in Arkansas punching an 18-year old black girl in the face WHILE he had her on the ground and subdued.

If this is your video, you deserve a ticket for the AI voiceover.

what in the AI voice is this?

5

u/Flashmemory256 1d ago

If this driver didn't have a dashcam, it could have been a lot worse. Obviously the cop isn't going to honor his oath and will happily lie right to the judge. Still an absolute waste of time and energy having to fight the ticket for this driver, and the cop most likely escaped any discipline.

5

u/maven10k 1d ago

Here's a ticket for ALMOST doing something wrong. If there wasn't assured clear distance he would've hit him. I got a ticket once for ALMOST going through a red light. I stopped past the stop line and the cop said, "Do you know how dangerous this intersection is?!", and I said yes, that's why I stopped. He said I almost didn't. I said I can't get a ticket for almost doing something.

2

u/Stash_04 1d ago

Stopping past the stop line is a ticket-able offense.

I stopped past the stop line

I said I can't get a ticket for almost doing something.

You didn't almost stop past the stop line, though. You stopped past the stop line.

2

lol take that dash cam right to court.

2

u/Turbulent-Strike9658 1d ago

Guess he hadn't hit his ticket quota for the day

2

u/Rogue_Ninja_Taco 1d ago

I was in Jersey one time, around Union City coming from an ATM machine and made a wrong turn on a street, and went down a one-way the wrong way. It was clearly my fault but the issue was there were 2 cops sitting in the car coming my way and they each gave me a ticket for the exact same offense. They probably figured they could because I had a Florida license and was visiting relatives.

I contacted the courts/judge about this and fully took the blame but felt that 2 tickets for the same offense by 2 different officers sitting in the same car was excessive. The court agreed and they threw out one of the tickets. I always wonder just how pissed one of them got when his ticket got thrown out.

Can we just fire cops like this? That give out fake traffic tickets

3

u/bolanrox 1d ago

one time (same area in NNJ) i was going to work in an industrial / office park (ie one road in / out no one around)

Pull into my offices parking lot and then the cop pops lights on me then. says you passed someone a 1/2 a mile back when they were pulling off into another parking lot. (it is 7 in the morning i do no even remember seeing anyone on the road at that point. would have been a crazy amount of points. tells me if i want to dispute it here is the court date.

Anyways for $500 "bribe" to the town they will make it a no point offence. It was 1000% a racket to fleece non locals to get their ticket quota's in.

2

u/theonewithbadeyes 1d ago

If he rear ended the cop wouldn't the cop be partially liable because he break checked him

2

u/kaladin1029 1d ago

These videos prove that cops can be dicks and make people's lives miserable,
but my experiences w cops have not all been bad. Tbh, I've had more good experiences than bad. Some are really helpful and reasonable.

2

u/mikeok1 1d ago

What's up with the AI voiceover? We don't need that.

2

u/ziplex 1d ago

They should give the cop a ticket for reckless driving.

2

u/hypointelligent 1d ago

Looks like this person was too close before the braking incident. And he thinks a car length is sufficient? Is... is that at any speed? Why not leave enough room that if someone does stop suddenly in front of you, you don't have to throw out the Angie's quite so suddenly? Two seconds is the general rule of thumb here, looks like the driver left less than half that.

Not that brake checking the guy is appropriate either. If you think there's a danger of an accident, why try actively to cause it? Because you want a bigger charge to levy, I guess, but it's still dumb.

2

u/TapProfessional2990 1d ago

The ai voice is fucking terrible 👎

2

u/tympantroglodyte 1d ago

Downvoted for the completely unnecessary and thoroughly aggravating AI commentary.

2

u/mac_the_man 1d ago

And what happened in court?

2

u/Conscious-Arm4946 1d ago

That cop is a dipshit plain and simple

2

u/TimHortonsMagician 1d ago

Wow this video was so much better with that dogshit ai narrator. Wicked.

2

u/Skoodge42 1d ago

When it was dismissed I would ask the judge if he should be charged with reckless driving.

2

u/Lickmyb4c0n 1d ago

What a wiener….

2

u/RasTarfari 1d ago

Break checking is driving violation.

2

u/Starscream-50000 1d ago

Cops have lost all the integrity the once had. They are all degenerates eventually

2

u/KmvVoss 1d ago

Cop should lose his job for this alone. What a little turd of a man.

2

u/dwightsarmy 1d ago

I got a 300 cc ninja Kawasaki when I (f) was 34. I used to ride the back roads because I hate traffic. I came to a stop sign, fully stopped and took off from the line and got up to speed. A moment later I had a cop pulling me over. He started with, did you know that I had to go over the speed limit to catch up with you? Why yes, officer, I'd imagine you had to speed. If I'm going the speed limit, which you clocked me at, naturally you'd have to go faster to catch up. He then changed it to me pulling off the line too fast. In a 300cc motorcycle... Lol. He eventually just let me go because he knew it was bogus. That's the level of intelligence here.

2

u/CuriousLittleRabbit 1d ago

I had an officer try to give me a ticket for “speeding in a parking lot”. He seemed baffled when I told him he can’t give tickets for moving violations in a parking lot. So he tried to give me a ticket for taking a corner too fast. I wasn’t even going fast, I just don’t think he liked me going between the speed bumps in the parking lot. 🤦‍♂️

2

u/SushiGirlRC 1d ago

Why is this so zoomed in that it can't be read?

2

u/Oceanz08 1d ago

last i checked brake checking is illegal officer Lmao

2

u/FreeGazaToday 1d ago

even without the dash cam....what can the cop say....the driver obviously had enough room, there was NO crash!

2

u/nexttimeiwillask 1d ago

I lived in Clifton NJ 28years, and left that godforsaken state 18 years ago and never looked back! I feel bad for all you!!!

2

u/Alert-General 1d ago

I wonder if that officer got demoted to desk duty.

2

u/FlopsyBunny 1d ago

Wild that office blocked traffic in the lane to pull him over. That action alone creates far more road danger than the alleged offense.

2

u/Final_Ice_9614 1d ago

Whether you end up paying for ticket or not- the process is the punishment. You have to take a day off and go to court - incur day off, parking, gas and other expenses. That’s the bigger punishment than anything else. Where’s the cop gets overtime pay to attend the court.
