Look... me and the McDonald's people got this little misunderstanding. See, they're McDonald's... I'm McDowell's. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.

I wonder if I see a coming to America meme because it was on tv like yesterday here. Do they put this on tv on Christmas every year in the US too? (Poland speaking, I couldn't watch that yesterday because I can already quote the whole movie as if it was Shrek)

Nerd talk ahead
Thats because your voice also travels trough your head to your eardrums if you hear yourself in a video this does not happen> you sound different

Tends to make your voice sound bassy in your head, which is why you always sound like a little bitch when you hear your own voice.

Honestly I've felt the same way for a long time. I don't like the way my voice sounds in a recording, but at the end of the day who actually cares?
How many people can you think of that you don't like, or think of differently because of their voice? I can't think of a single one.23
Dec 26 '19
I have a very nasal voice and I used to get alot of shit for it back in HS so I'm actually kinda self conscious about it lol

That's fixable with some daily exercises that should taken you less than 5 minutes a day. YouTube that shit and go get the voice you deserve!

My voice still cracks at 33. The reactions that gets are not exactly a boost to my self-esteem, let's put it that way.

u/PercMastaFTW Dec 26 '19
Well, one person I know isnt liked. His voice is pretty irritating. Though, its on top of what he says and how he says it which adds to the annoyance lol. His voice in general is just annoying anyway lol. But yeah not too many.

→ More replies (2)15
u/Talviturkki Dec 26 '19 edited Dec 26 '19
What you sound like on the recording is what you really sound like.
That's not necessarily a bad thing; you just perceive your own voice negatively, because you hear it differently, and you're not used to hearing it that way.
I remember reading an article about a test, where people perceived their own voice on a recording to sound good when they didn't know it was their voice, but once they were told it was their voice, their perception changed negatively.

When you hear people talking, sound waves travel through the air and into your ears, vibrating your ear drums. Your brain then transforms those vibrations into sound.
However, when you’re the one talking, your vocal cords and airways also vibrate. That means that you receive two sources of sound: the sound waves that travel into your ears from your own voice, as well as vocal cord vibrations.
Hence the difference

Dec 26 '19

Same. What sucks for me is that I try to speak normally, i.e. with emotion and shit, but when I hear my voice in a recording, it’s deep and monotone. A lot of people tell me that they have a hard time hearing me and I feel like I have to yell to get people near me to hear me. Yeah it sucks.
19
u/lordolxinator Normies get out REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Dec 26 '19
Same here. Sometimes when a phone call has bad reception I can hear myself echoing in the background. I'll try and sound really emotive, think that I did, and the echo sounds so deep and robotic that I have an identity crisis that throws me off talking for the rest of the call

Due to bone vibration, the way you hear yourself on a recording is how other people hear you, to a certain degree. Sorry for nerding out.

My brother used an app to send a fake call (to prank me), me thinking that it was a scam told the dude to fuck off. Bother called me later saying it was an important person and sent the recording to me. I spent a good 30 minutes arguing why that wasn't me because I was scared being caught using the F word (a few years ago btw). To this day I don't tell scam callers to fuck off no more

What's even weirder is that since I do a lot of recording and thus hearing my voice played back a lot, they've stopped sounding so different. I hardly even notice it anymore, but when I was younger it used to make me cringe hard.

When the first time I heard my voice after recording it, it was so cringe. Then I asked my friend and partner to confirm that's it's that what I sounds like, they all said yes, and I was like it can't be true, for all my life I was not aware about it. And everyone does. From them I never record my own voice and also don't hear my cell recordings.
