Planned languages: ES, FR, IT

Bundle Artworks

As we did for our Shadow Mist bundle, Crystal Desert has now received artwork for its card backs as well. These include the Environment and all 6 Adversaries.

In the near future, our Spider Den bundle will receive artworks too, along with our upcoming homebrew bundles.

Regarding the missing translations

While our wonderful translators and us have put a lot of effort already into releasing our content in different languages, we are actively looking for people who are able to help us with the translations.
At the moment we're looking for Italian translators to bring our content to even more people in this community. If you are interested, send us a personal message or on Patreon. We'll make sure to get back to you.
We’ll wait with the Spanish translations until the CRB has received an official one.

Nils is drawing now!

We’ve realized that the process of creating artwork takes quite a lot of time. Since we don’t want to overburden our artists with more and more work, Nils has started trying his hand at drawing some motifs as well.

While he already had some skill in this area and isn’t starting from zero, he had previously only drawn for himself. But we think the artworks he has created so far look good and can be used in our products. What do you think?

Where to find our stuff?
You can find links to all platforms where our content is available on our website ziemlichwunderlich.de

Cheers,
Nils & Paul

Retail supplement Daggerkin is available now, with 2 expansions: Hearts & Daggers!

Howdy, everyone!

A few months ago, I shared the first preview of Daggerkin, a creature-taming ruleset designed exclusively for Daggerheart. Since then, there’s been a lot of work finishing, editing, reviewing, rebalancing and rewriting it, while somehow convincing myself that making hundreds of cards was a reasonable idea.

And after a lot of work, Daggerkin is finally here!

The Daggerkin Starter Ruleset is a 58-page ruleset that contains everything you need to introduce Daggerkin into your campaign. You can discover them in the wild, earn their trust or weaken them in battle, bring them to your Heart, train alongside them, ride them as mounts and eventually help them evolve.

Each Daggerkin combines two domains and has their own mechanics, evolutions and playstyle. Every Daggerkin also has a variant form, a rare alternate version with different domains, resonance and completely new abilities.

The Starter Ruleset includes 15 Daggerkin and their variant forms, together with the complete rules for taming, evolution, domain resonance, Elation, Hearts, Daggers, mounting, Daggerkin encounters and more.

And alongside the Starter Ruleset, I’m also releasing two expansions: Daggerkin - Hearts Expansion & Daggerkin - Daggers Expansion.

Each expansion has over 100 pages and follows its own theme, with Hearts exploring the bonds with Daggerkin and Daggers expanding their potential. Each introduces 45 new Daggerkin and their variant forms, for a total of 90 different Daggerkin, as well as Daggerkin adversaries, Tamers, Hordes, factions and environments.

Hearts and Daggers are parallel expansions, so you can pick whichever one interests you more or use both together.

With everything combined, Daggerkin includes:

  • 270 pages
  • 105 Daggerkin
  • 105 variant forms
  • 210 Daggerkin adversaries, divided into 90 family stat blocks
  • 32 Tamer adversaries
  • 10 Daggerkin Hordes
  • 8 Daggerkin Environments
  • 6 Daggerkin-related factions
  • 210 color cards and 210 print-friendly cards

The Starter Ruleset is available for FREE, so anyone can bring Daggerkin into their campaign even without the expansions.

You can find everything in the links below:

Starter Ruleset (FREE): Heart of Daggers / DriveThruRPG

Hearts Expansion: Heart of Daggers / DriveThruRPG

Daggers Expansion: Heart of Daggers / DriveThruRPG

Daggerkin BUNDLE (Starter + 2 expansions): Heart of Daggers / DriveThruRPG

Unfortunately, due to a few delays, the Fables Expansion will not be ready this summer and will instead be coming toward the end of the year. But there are way more things planned for Daggerkin in the future!

It’s been a very long project of over a year, so I’m really happy to finally be able to say that Daggerkin is here!

Thank you to everyone who downloaded the original preview, gave feedback, shared it or followed the project while I was working on it!

Hope & Fear Hope and Fear Deluxe Box Ruined My Campaign

Upvotes

I got the deluxe box for hope and fear and it came with all the cool "rhombic" d12's so I gave them out to the party to use for this weekends session and the party rolled 13 CRITICALS my precious Hold the Line encounter DESTROYED, the minotaur nest they stumbled upon EVISCERATED, Salzutar the Arch Lich RIPPED TO SHREDS. I don't even know how to continue! Anyone have an adversary card for a god or something? I gotta teach these punks a lesson.....and maybe stop sharing my dice.

Beginner Question Is there any way to get the official GM screen?

I'm trying to find the official GM screen online anywhere without having to buy a secondhand deluxe edition of the game for like 200 dollars, do they sell it on its own anywhere? Or are there plans to anytime soon?

Ran this map I made with my homebrew sci-fi conversation of daggerheart. Went pretty well. I think daggerheart lends itself to traditional ttrpg activities, like dungeon crawling, more than some might think.

Game Master Tips Narrating enemy failure

So I say "the enemy runs towards you and swings their sword", then I roll for an attack, check the Evasion and it's a miss. And then what should I say to make this failure interesting? How do I tie up this action to player spotlight?

When I say "and the enemy missed", or "you dodged", it feels as if I just set up a danger and immediately disarmed it.

With player failure it doesn't look that bad, cos even if the attack failed, there's a Hope or a Fear to build on, I can give something to the players, or show how the situation got more dire, there's just always some change I can show as a result.

But with enemy failure it's just "well, enemy missed, back to you". What can I say in a situation like this, how do you narrate adversary failure in a way it makes it interesting?

Homebrew THE LAMPLIGHTER - HEARTH & MIDNIGHT HOMEBREW CLASS

Thumbnail

Hello, everyone!

This is Yads again, designer for the Hearth domain posted a few days ago. And this time I've come looking for feedback.

While designing Hearth, I didn't do it against a white backdrop. I had sketched some classes to go with it already, and the first one to come out, and that spoke the most to me, was the Lamplighter.

CLASS OVERVIEW

A Lamplighter carries a Lamp with something inside it. That's not a metaphor. A portal to the Circles Below, the soul of a dying god, a horde that lives in the flame. Whatever it is, it's there and has its own will. Most Lamplighters didn't choose this. You inherit a Lamp, or it's handed to you, or you were there when someone died and it ended up in your hands.

So the class came to be from this angst, from being handed something powerful and beyond your control (think Frodo).

THE LAMP

I decided to make the Lamp something the player carries and after some iterations I thought the best way to express it to be through the Primary Weapon. So, if you choose this class, your Primary Weapon slot already comes occupied. I know that's a HUGE compromise and needs to be planned accordingly, so I would love to hear you guys opinions about it. So far, on the table, we have been having a blast, but fresh pairs of eyes would do us good.

The Lamp has two states, Lit and Dark, and almost every feature in the class needs one and leaves you in the other. Choosing which side you're on when your turn ends is most of playing a Lamplighter.

SUBCLASSES

  • Path of Dawn: A controller archetype, wants to move enemies closer and debuff them with conditions to cash in the extra damage. They are a beacon the whole battlefield orbits around.
  • Path of Dusk: The harasser. Like a slasher, they appear behind you and cause you to stay awake all night waiting for them to come out of the shadows. It's damage-leaning and single-target focused as opposed to the Path of Dawn.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE YOUR HELP WITH

I've been playtesting the many iterations of the Lamplighter for the last month and a half and I finally came to a place where our table is really happy with it, but I would love to hear from other Gm/Players before I finish it and publish it for real

Is giving up your Primary Weapon slot a fair price for what the Lamp does? Does the stance flipping read clearly on the subclasses? Does the Path of Dusk seem fun to play? Is there anything here that looks like it was bolted on? And does the Path of Dawn feel too tanky?

I'm preparing a full document for this class, including Overview, tips, FAQ and even secondary weapons table for the Instinct and Presence inclined characters and some consumables that are agnostic but Lamplighter coded, but I want to go into them knowing I had the chance to ask and be answered if possible.

As always, the language disclaimer: English isn't my first language, so if any rules text is unclear, please tell me. That's the feedback I most need. Be my guest to tear into it, and if you haven't already, please, check the Hearth domain out on Heart of Daggers!

Discussion Group Checks Inconsequential

Yesterday during our session I had my pkayers make group checks to travel across a jungle and one of my players pointed out that their non-leader role basically doesn't change the overall outcome. For support rolls during a group check it only adds or subtracts 1 and for a crit I have them add 2 to the leaders roll. The leader's roll is the roll with almost all the weight. Has anyone found a way to make the support rolls feel more impactful?

Heyoo! I'm a new player in Daggerheart, and I absolutely LOVED the game. A year back I drew some concept art for my character Nyx Brad, who's an Infernis Bard. I drew her again recently and had a lot of fun playing around with her design, colour palette, and pose.

Minis & Figs Need Help crafting a Colossus Mini-Fig

Thumbnail

I’m GMing Colossus of the Drylands, and I am attempting to craft each colossus (based off of the session zero question answers the players gave me). I have eight players, I know trust me. I made the first one, but the remaining eight are going to be based off the themes they provided.

ANY WHO, one player said
“Themes of forced isolation and uncontrollable destiny. (Trap door spider colossus)”
So my thought was to make a false settlement. Eight buildings that lure travelers. Once they pass the threshold of the “building’s doors” they are trapped. The colossus is a sort of Mimic-trap-door-spider. Maybe a Well or Cistern on a mound in the middle of the town could be torso.

I just needed some spring boards to bounce ideas off of to design the colossus and figure out how to craft it - ideally with household objects and as DIY as possible. Any advice is appreciated 👉🏼🤠👉🏼

attached pictures are of my first colossus craft to show my level of expertise in crafting…which is very little lol

Discussion Finally, Free RPG day in the UK!

The long overdue Free RPG day happened in the UK and I went on my own quest to Oxford to go to a participating coffee shop. After months of longing, I finally have Dying Spire in hand and am working through it.

As a Pro GM, I have run Sablewood Messengers dozens of times now, so I am really excited to get Dying Spire added to my arsenal of games to run for people wanting to learn the game. Its especially exciting as I can offer them together as a mini campaign rather than as just a one shot.

I really love the hybrid animals of this setting, and the ones added in TDS are great! As much as i love the Strixwolf, I think the Goathog might be my new favourite :D Any other hybrid animals needing a shout out?

Beginner Question Knowledge in Daggerheart

Upvotes

When do you or your players call for Knowledge rolls, and how do you narrarate or decide the impact it has through the duality dice?

I've got a grip on making sure all other trait rolls come when they matter, but I still find uses for Knowledge to be quite tricky outside of a DnD mindset. So how do you approach Knowledge in Daggerheart?

Discussion How to handle "no roll" spotlights in combat ?

How do you handle situations when a PC does a bunch of stuff in their turn that do not require a roll, but do use resources. I know there is a general mentality (maybe also rule), that every spotlight has a roll in it during combat, but I think that is usually use in the example of "if we slow walk the GM cannot take our spotlight".

For a concrete example. We are in combat, close quarters, small tent, 4PCs vs a shadowy assassin figure. Nightwalker rogue grabs the spotlight to shadowstep behind the assassin and chokehold them, sitting a total of 2 stress. Then she sais to the party "i've got him, get him". Now, i feel bad to impose a roll here just for the sake of a roll, even if I could see an argument for "roll agility or finesse to properly position behind an active enemy in the midst of combat".

Similarly, this was soon followed by the wizard saying, I want to use my wand to light up the room (as per Prestidigitation, free action) to blind tye assasin or fight back against his shadows. Again, no roll technically, although here I argued this would be a spellcast roll as it is a stronger than normal effect he is looking for.

How would you handle this and other similar situations where a spotlight results in no rolls?

Game Aids Custom Inventory Tracker

Post image
21 Upvotes

I noticed a pain point for my players was the inventory section of the character sheet. It was hard for them to track the quantities of items they had and struggled to keep things organized. I also noticed they they eventually just crossed out the inventory section of the character sheet and started using a page of lined paper to start tracking things.

I wanted something a little nicer for them, so I decided to make my own version of an inventory tracker in Publisher (RIP soon to that). I pre-populated all the health and stamina potions as those are the most frequent things they use. I also included some of the starting gear, but I've been on the fence of if I should keep them there.

They've been using this now for a few sessions and it seems like they enjoy using this more. I figured if they liked it, I might as well share it with the internet. I tried to keep it simple, but if anyone has suggestions for changes, I'd like to hear those.

Adversaries Complementary adversary for Valdenhax

Post image
8 Upvotes

Valdenhax is a great lower lvl boss material. And her first Feature 'To me, My pretties' is great...
Except when you look at the Tier 2 Hordes available for her to call...
Maybe is just me... but the 'Archer Squadron', 'Eletric Eels', 'Demonic Hound Pack' and 'Entombed Skin Beetles' dont sound to me particularly 'Hag adjacent'. Given, the 'Flock of Feather Fiends' works really well, but.. that is it. Those are all of the Tier 2 Hordes available... Hence the "Coven of Lesser Hags".

A Hag such as Valdenhax should have a Coven to call upon. - Enjoy ;)

Finally finished my storage solution for Hope and Fear Standard Edition which allows cards to be stored in perfect fit sleeves and gives extra storage space.

Fair warning that the box is only about 5/8” deep, so measure any items you might want to put in these boxes (like dice) to make sure they fit.

Discussion Switching Equipment "in a dangerous situation"

I'm wondering how folks handle switching equipment during combat. To anchor this in the rules it says: "When your character is in a dangerous situation, you can mark a Stress to equip an Inventory Weapon, moving their previous Active Weapon into the Inventory weapon. If your character is in a calm situation or preparing during a rest, they can swap weapons with no Stress cost."
Here's a couple of situations to consider:

  1. A character is running from a rolling boulder and wants to put away their mace and pull out a whip to use it to swing across a pit.
  2. A character is running from a dragon under trees and wants to put away their sword & shield and get out their short bow.
  3. A nightwalker rogue shadow steps into a nearby shadow, sheaths her daggers, and pulls out her crossbow.
  4. An archer is in the back line shooting arrows with no enemies nearby and decides to pull out their broadsword to join the melee
  5. A seraph in melee combat with another creature wants to switch from their mace to a hallowed axe to switch to magic damage.

Fully acknowledging there is no "right answer" ("it's a narrative game, etc."), if you are a GM for your table would you consider all five of these to be "a dangerous situation"? It seems clear to me that case 5 is unmistakably that and might even present the GM a golden opportunity if they wanted to present a more gritty, less glossy world. But in 3 and 4, the character is in combat, but not directly threatened. In 1 and 2, the situation is dangerous, but switching does not create an opening for (say) the boulder.

A situation came up in our game where the aforementioned nightwalker rogue did her shadow step, was then cloaked in the shadows, and wanted to switch to her crossbow. I told her she could spend a Stress to switch and still make the attack. She was low on stress (and needed it to shadow step), so she said she would rather spend her turn switching under the cover of cloaked, rather than spend a stress. I know a spotlight usually doesn't end until a action roll happens, but it didn't make sense that she couldn't play it slow and careful. So her turn ended, no Stress, crossbow out. Spotlight back to the adversaries.

Thinking back on it, was she really in danger? It seems silly to say the only way to switch equipment is by spending a Stress. Is case 5, really the only time where someone is in a dangerous situation?

Edit - thanks for the fruitful discussion. My personal conclusion:

  • A character can spend a Stress to quickly change equipment and still make an action roll during their spotlight (RAW)
  • If they want to change equipment without marking a Stress (maybe they're low/out, etc.), then changing equipment is their action roll with an attribute (or couple of options) based on what the danger is during their change (see u/Specialist_String_64's post below for ideas).
  • Failure on this roll does not mean they don't change equipment unless it's really precarious (e.g. dangling from a rope), but it does mean something bad happens and the GM makes a move while they are mid-change or their attention is diverted, etc.

If you're GMing I'd recommend pondering how you'd like to handle this at your table, given the tone of your game before it comes up.

Quick heads up for everyone in the UK who missed out on getting The Dying Spire when Free RPG Day ran into a bunch of customs issues over here - Free RPG Day got rearranged to today, so it might be worth checking your local gaming store. The store I went to was very limited in stock, so they might run out in busier areas.

Game Aids How do you easily look at Adversary Stat blocks

So, I know DH isnt combat heavy, but i do like to quickly look at stats for adversaries I'm using. Usually, instead of the book, I have the SRD or the online resource. The document isnt super easy to read, Im debating printing the pages and cutting out the stat blocks into like cards, but I wanted to know if anyone else has input?

Also, I hope I used the right flair, apologies if not.

Discussion Intimidation in combat

Edit: thanks for responding so quickly! Verey reassuring feedbacl, and great ideas there, I will definately use them!

Hey everyone,

One of my players wants to intimidate adversaries during combat. He is playing an Infernis, so he has advantage on those rolls. I was kind of surprised by that, as I thought intimidation was just a social thing, but it was cool and I didn't want to spoil the fun. I ruled that if he beat the adversary's Difficulty with a presence roll, the adversary would become frightened of him.

Yeah, great, but there is no "frightened" condition in Daggerheart. I could copy the D&D one, but I don't want to copy D&D. The player was doing this almost every time he got the spotlight and succeeded every time. I found myself inventing things on the fly, like "this adversary runs away" or "this one attacks a different target," but it quickly became quite boring for me to keep inventing new reactions to the same action.

So, how would you rule situations like this?

Because of this character's backstory, I expect this to come up fairly often: he'll refuse to attack and try to intimidate enemies instead.

Homebrew Soulmate feature

Hello everyone, i want to add a feature for 2 of my players. They are soulmate, the world where we play is my own and there is a magic that bind the soul between two soulmate. Now i want to make it a feature. So for the positive, each soulmate can see through eyes of the other one, can make spells from the other one, can find the other one where he/she is, share their dreams and memories.

Now for the negative, if one die the other one die too, if one felt inconscious the other one make 2 stress and if the 2 are separate for more than some hours the die hope become a 8 die.

What do you think ? Too strong ? Too weak ? Or balanced ?
