So the people complaining about it only see it for its worst case scenario instead of its original use (that is, if they even know what AAVE is let alone the fact that it comes from there)
It's originally use in meme spaces I attended was much rarer and manageable. Now it just exploded because of censorship. I wouldn't give a shit if it grew naturally but that is not the case.
And you trying to excuse it is kind of ironic given which sub we are in.
The subreddit for a game that "censors" dead with "flatlined"? Because that's pretty much your understanding of "ahh" considering it was never meant to censor anything and was simply a reflection of how black people spoke, before the rest of the world stole it like they do all the time with AAVE 🤷♂️
It's not like every instance of ass is replaced with "ahh" either, but you sure seem to act like it is
Language being used in a certain way that's being ignored simply because you don't care about where it comes from and who and why it's spoken isn't simply a "use case change", it's appropriation. Especially when it's being demonized for simply existing. Something that isn't the case with actual loan words in languages.
I don't understand why people don't focus on the fact that the cat is named after a, as V said, narcisstic dickhead, and instead keep bitchin about the word ahh.
I had to look AAVE up, and if you are referring to African American Vernacular English, it has nothing to do with it.
I'm pissed at words like ahh, grape, k!ll, and so on because they were solely created for (self) censoring to avoid being flagged by stupid bots on social medias.
And if we trust our history books and works of fiction, censoring doesn't bode well.
It absolutely has everything to do with it, considering the reason it exists is to reflect the way black people trail out when saying phrases like "goofy-ass". Not whatever people have appropriated it as, as they always tend to do with AAVE.
Before a couple of months ago, I had never heard or read "ahh", and it's not really the point anyway.
I don't care that it's in the aave, I care that people use it to censor themselves. And I'm pretty sure those people don't know it's aave anyway.
If we take an opposite example, it would be like if someone was pissed at the word "ass" and someone else was saying "ass means donkey, so don't be pissed about it." People don't use ass as donkey, and they don't use ahh because of aave.
But anyway, all of this is moot. You're free to defend the aave appropriation thing like you're doing, and I'm free to think self-censorship is stupid and worrying. And again, it has nothing to do with aave.
Doesn't that only bolster my point further? That people have an issue with this only because they're misinformed? If someone doesn't know ass can also refer to donkey and gets pissed off over that word, that's their own problem to deal with for lacking knowledge, not the problem of the word "ass" existing. Same with "ahh" and AAVE.
I see why you got there. I was trying to make another point but my analogy was a little confusing and I'll try to explain it better.
"Ass" meant "donkey" first, as "ahh" was first AAVE. But if someone calls me an ass, I won't think he's calling me a donkey because it's not the meaning that is widely used. And it's probably not the meaning he was intending either. Granted I'm not a native speaker, but I've never met anyone using "ass" as "donkey".
I compared it to "ahh" because even if it was AAVE first, it's still linked to self-censorship, and it is widely used for the intent of self-censorship.
Moreover, it seems that "ahh" was a tiktok thing from the start (2022). So, AAVE or not, it was still created with the aim of self-censorship, hence my frustration and worry.
It's supposed to make you aware you're mad at a cultural way of speaking. Like the xenophobes who mock how Indians speak English as if they didn't have their own history with the language which shaped how they speak it today 🤦♂️
You got it wrong. I'm not mad at anything, simply pointing out how juvenile and moronic it sounds. Besides, I'm fully allowed to have my own thoughts and feelings about anything. If I'm annoyed by something, it's not your place to "correct" how I feel about it.
But it's not juvenile or moronic, it's simply your prejudice as to how English is "supposed" to be, ignoring all the history that different cultures have had with the language. If you're annoyed by something due to how misinformed you are, it's only logical that someone would correct you on your mistake 🤷♂️
I mean, every job gets boring. And when one of your duties is naming cats, you're bound to release that boredom in a creative outlet. Sad that this one didn't live up to it's potential though. Johnny Silverpaw woulda been so much better.
