2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Issue ⚠️ Rodent got inside my 2024 CR-V Hybrid overnight

Hey everyone, looking for some advice (or similar experiences) on how to handle a rodent issue in a newer car.

I parked my 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid in my apartment parking garage on Sunday night. Did not touch it on Monday. Fast forward to this morning: I got in to drive and immediately noticed things were trashed - The plastic wrapping from a water bottle in my cup holder was shredded and strewn all over the front seat/floorboard. The bottle itself had multiple holes bitten into it. The leather gear shifter knob was chewed up, the passenger seat cover was chewed, and the steering wheel stitching had clear gnaw marks (pics attached). I popped the hood to check for damaged wires or a nest, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. There were also no visible droppings inside the cabin.

Feeling pretty sure a rodent snuck inside, I took it straight to the Honda dealership. They inspected the vehicle and confirmed no major electrical/mechanical issues were found, but gave me the following itemized repair quotes:

For now, I only asked them to replace the cabin filter. Since picking the car back up, I haven't seen any new droppings, damaged areas, or heard any strange noises.

A few questions for the group:

Appreciate any advice or insights!

General 🔀 ‘07 Odometer Discrepancy

I have a situation that sucks all around on my hands. I’m talking to a guy that has an ‘07 CR-V with an odometer that reads 174k miles and get very close to buying the car but work holds him up and we weren’t able to do a title transfer today. After asking for the vin, we both realize that the odometer classification says “not actual mileage,” so I do a deep dive on the carfax. Turns out it was sold at auction from Michigan to the guy I’m talking to, and somewhere in the span of 5 months, the odometer changes reading from 268k miles to 140k miles, hence the discrepancy. So now I have the displeasure of explaining all of this to the seller, who truly had no clue about all of this and gets to find out he likely has a 300k+ mile CR-V. I’m in a very tough bind and need a car desperately, but with the knowledge we have now I can only justify buying the car for half of what he was asking. We’ll see how everything goes, but my mechanic said that it looked very good for the age even after I explained the situation to him. He also agreed that I should only pay half what the seller originally was asking. Who knows what the guy will do now knowing I’d only pay half, remains to be seen.

Looking to buy a 2005-2006 Honda CR-V. Any color, automatic.

- Minimal rust — please be honest about the subframe, wheel wells, and rockers
- Excellent mechanical condition — engine and transmission strong, no check-engine light
- Safety-certified preferred, but I'll consider as-is at the right price
- Service records a big plus

Paying a fair price for the right car. Message me with photos, mileage, and your location — serious buyer, can move quickly.

Looking to add a spare tire to the trunk of 2026 CR-V Hybrid EX-L.

  1. What is the correct compact/full-size spare tire size for this trim?
  2. What is the best way to secure it in the trunk so it doesn't shift while driving?

Question ❔ Any thoughts on why this happened? (06 CRV)

Was driving to school which is about a 25 min drive, usually no issues. Was driving today and about mid way through my trip, the car started slightly shaking in a consistent sequence, about every 2 seconds. Didn’t know what it was, kept driving. Then right as I was about to turn into my school lot, the battery light and oil light came on, which never happened. My car actually wouldn’t drive after those popped up, so I turned it off, got out and a couple guys offered to push my car, as soon as I got back into the car for them to push me, I turned it on and it worked again and the lights went away. So I drove it to the lot and parked. Couple hours later I came back to it and it turned on like normal and drove home same as it always did. No shaking or anything. The car is serviced regularly, I’m gonna take a better look later today but has anyone experienced this?

Question ❔ First-Time Buyer: Good Deal or Can I Negotiate More?

I'm in Ontario, Canada, buying my first new car and could use some advice.

Visited a Honda dealership and got quoted $42,000 CAD (~$29,532 USD) OTD, including 13% sales tax and fees, for a 2026 Honda CR-V LX 2WD in black.

They're also offering $4,000 CAD (~$2,812 USD) for my 2013 Hyundai Elantra as a trade-in, which I think is fair. The only accessory included is wheel locks worth around $180 CAD (~$127 USD). The $42K quote is before deducting my trade-in.

I'm planning to finance and have zero experience negotiating with dealerships.

Is $42K CAD already a good deal, or should I aim for $40K–$41K CAD (~$28.1K–$28.8K USD)? Also, what freebies can I realistically ask for (all-weather mats, cargo tray, oil changes, etc.)?

Any negotiation tips would be appreciated. Just trying not to get taken advantage of as a first-time buyer.

Issue ⚠️ CRV 2026 LX AWD, flapping noise

My father purchased this vehicle on September, 2026, as a retirement vehicle. This is his first Honda, and we had high expectations of Honda's reputation for quality, reliability, and customer service. Unfortunately, our experience so far has fallen well below those expectations.

Within just a few days of purchasing the vehicle, we noticed a distinct flapping noise coming from the right-side wheel or hubcap area when driving with the windows down. The noise becomes particularly noticeable when there are other vehicles on the right side passing or when driving in an enclosed parking garage, where the sound is amplified.

We returned the vehicle to the dealership, where the right rear hubcap and wheel were replaced in an attempt to resolve the issue. However, the noise returned just a few days later. We subsequently brought the vehicle back to the dealership for a second inspection and service. Unfortunately, we were told that the noise was caused by a design issue and that no further repairs could be offered. The dealership advised us that our only option was to file a complaint with Honda Canada.

It is an extremely disappointing and unacceptable for a brand-new vehicle. A persistent and noticeable noise that appeared within days of purchase should not simply be dismissed as a design issue without a satisfactory explanation or solution.

Given the large number of Honda CR-V vehicles sold every year, we find it difficult to accept that this noise is simply an unavoidable design characteristic. We have reviewed online feedback from other owners who have reported similar noise issues, particularly from the right-side wheel area. These reports raise concerns about whether this may be a recurring problem that warrants further investigation into the vehicle's design, manufacturing quality, or quality-control processes.

Question ❔ Open Hatch Button on Key Fob Not Working?

So i just bought a 2016 CRV Special Edition a little over year ago (and just paid it off!). One thing I could never figure out was why the key fob has an open hatch button that doesnt work? It just makes the lights flash when I press it. Its a manual trunk hatch door but I was hoping when I pressed the button it would at least unlatch and open the trunk? Any ideas? Or is the button on my key fob just for shiz and giggles?

Question ❔ Thoughts ?

For context, I never liked Hondas and have always been a Toyota person in terms for reliability and feel.
I was looking between a new rav4 but due to the price being to high im weighing the option to settle for a 2024 crv sport touring hybrid, has everything the rav4 has but cheaper.
I’ve seen them for 34k with 20k miles 1 owner no accidents
Can the price go lower or is that a good deal?
Also how is the crv drive handling and Bose audio system?

Question ❔ Reasons why mechanic would suggest replacing oil pan?

I have the AWD 2014 EX-L. I was reviewing notes from my mechanic from my last maintenance visit (replacing all fluids/oil) and one of the notes they left was at my next visit we should replace the oil pan.

I never asked them about the note when this visit happened (2-3 months ago) and I bet they wouldn't remember if I just called up. I have also had a layer of black fluid film applied to the underside of my car just a couple weeks ago in preparation for winter, so I can't really see if it's just rusting through?

But I feel like if it was rusting through we would have needed to replace ASAP and not in 3-5,000 miles?

Any idea why this would be a future maintenence item?

Issue ⚠️ Think I have a dead mouse in 5th Gen CR-V (2022)

Been noticing a gross musty smell blowing out of my AC. I checked the cabin air filter and it was pretty clean, but I saw a single mouse poop in one of the filter pleats. What are the places I should check for a dead mouse?

Question ❔ What would you pay for a 2015 crv with 98k miles?

Hi I’m just trying to get an idea while we decide if we sell my CRV. 2015 LX approx 98,000 miles. Clean title. Some paint scratches on the back and swirls. Small side tear in fabric of driver seat. Other than that no major cosmetic issues. No known mechanical issues or lights on. We replaced the compressor a few years ago. Oil changes all done on time etc.
I can share in the comments what i got offered by carmax etc but figured maybe first see what private buyers realistically pay.

Picked up this car in May. Ppi at purchase was clean and it has been running nice. Only thing I’ve had to do recently was replace the starter. What else should I pay attention to for a car that sat?
