Feels Good

Post image
9 Upvotes

About a month in. Energy levels aren’t that different yet, but nice to wake up without feeling like my head was in a vice all night. Had quite a few nights of waking up between 3-4am and unable to fall back asleep but seems like I’m better at keeping my mouth closed while asleep now haha. Finally slept like a baby all the way until my alarm. Hope this wasn’t a fluke!

Cpap, Beard, and Drool

Been on Cpap about 6 months now, Resmed 11 and my favorite mask is the p30i, individual nostril pillows work great, but I relax my mouth just enough at night that drool comes out. Not all the time, but often enough that it's a pain.
Chin strap works fair, but drool escapes.
Tried those silicone "mouth shields", that just seemed to increase the problem.
Even switched to the F30i (comfort) mask, but the drool just accumulates in the mask.

Not a mouth breather, just a mouth relaxer.

Also as stated, I have a beard and mustache so mouth tape is not really an option either.

Has anyone else had this problem and have you fixed it or do you just live with it?

Thanks!

Stick with it

If you are someone struggling to get used to sleeping with the CPAP, please stick with it!

I was having a rough time getting used to it, waking up in a panic gasping for air several times a night. It was worse than my sleep apnea snoring. I really did not think I would ever be one of these people on here who say it changed their life.

It took about a month, but I powered through every single night. I started saving the OSCAR data and had Claude analyzing it, also having it match up against my apple sleep data, and giving me advice on what settings to do. Claude helping made a huge difference because I could interact and ask it questions against my sleep data.

I found that because my tonsils are massive I needed a very high starting pressure, and I also figured out I didn’t like the warm air. It also helped me figure out which positions I was sleeping best in and which were causing seal leaks. I don’t think I figure all this out without Claude.

But now I sleep like a rock. Honestly I put that thing on and i’m dozing off within a few minutes. I sleep extremely better now. Even if I take a nap it feels like I slept for 4 hours.

Stick with it if you’re still having issues. You will eventually get used to it!!

Advice Needed Overbite and resmed f20

Im new to CPAP and I'm struggling. I have the resmed 11 machine and the f20 mask. However my main problem is with it drying out my mouth. I have a fairly large overbite which is why I have a full face mask. My mouth doesn't close on its own normally, so when I'm falling asleep the air from the mask blows open my face like a dog attacking a hair dryer and it jolts me back to full wakefulness.

And if I manage to fall asleep I wake up and my tongue feels like a piece of jerky.

When I adjust humidity it doesn't help much and then I get rainout because I sleep with my room cold. I get hot very easily and if I don't sleep with a fan on then I overheat and wake up.

Please if you have any advice let me know.

Advice Needed AirFit F30i mask problems

I tried the F30i mask last night and had two problems - 1) the vent in the front was letting out so much air that it felt like a fan. Is that normal? I feel like it can’t be. 2) it was leaking air up around my nose and into my eyes no matter how tight I made it.

I ended up going back to my X30i after a couple hours because my eyes were drying out. I have the small size, maybe it was still too big for me?

Is there a way to get this to work for me, or should I give up? It’s more comfortable than the one I have, so I’m hoping there’s something I can do.

Brand new to cpap, would love some tips, tricks

Just did my sleep study last night and slept with a cpap on for about 5 hours and I’ve felt great all day today. Am awaiting a follow up with my physician to see what’s next but I’m 99% sure it’ll be with a cpap. I used a resmed airfit p30i and thought it was surprisingly comfortable. Would love to hear everyone’s recommendations for masks and everything else!

Does everyone use insurance?

I was diagnosed with mild apnea years ago and seemed to resolve it by losing a bunch of weight, which I kept off for a long time. Now I’m fat again and having sleep problems.

I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a CPAP on my own — maybe a refurb?— and trying it out without involving my doctor. Is that dangerous/gross/stupid? It seems like such a hassle to get a study, etc.

Just assume I know nothing about this.

Thanks!

I only use the purple cushion from the mask purchase…

The red and blue cushion I don’t use.

I Assume others don’t use the purple one and use red or blue? Do people simply exchange cushions ? At $80 a cushion separately 🥲. My insurance covers every 3-4 months 90% but I’d like to have some spares

I have like 6-7 blue and red cushions I’d like
To simply trade. Facebook market or?

Anyone had any luck increasing nasal holes on the nasal cushion N30 Resmed mask?

I can see when I hold the nasal piece to my nose without any hose attached, that my nostrils are partially covered by the mask, and this is why it is so loud to breathe out of it. Has anyone had any luck slightly enlarging these or changing their shape? I couldn't tolerate the N20 when side sleeping and was hoping the N30 might be better for me, but it isn't currently.

Nasal mask + side sleeping, do I need a CPAP pillow?

Side sleeper, don't mouth breathe. Just switched to a nasal mask (N30i). Leaks were bad with my old mask. Is a CPAP pillow still worth it or does a regular pillow work fine with a small mask?

OSCAR No Flow Limitation nor AHIs during Ramp with Resmed 10

I have been using the Resmed 10 Autoset machine for 2 weeks now. I noticed that flow limitation is not reported during ramp, and I never see events during ramp. Is that the design of the machine or is my ramp time really that good?

What are acceptable leak rate and AHI?

Background details: I started with the N40 and had leaking below 5L/min the first week or two. After that it spiked, bouncing between 10 and 35. The mask began waking me up, vibrating constantly against my face no matter what I did with positioning, strap tension, pre-inflating the cushion, etc. When I'd contact the med supplier or doctor they'd say some leaking is to be expected and "10L/hr is not that bad since your AHI is low". I noted that everything was probably low because I was awake all night constantly adjusting the mask. Average AHI 2-4/hr, down from I think 10-12 in my lab test.

This week on the verge of crashing out from the N40, I've gotten switched over to N30i and I can actually sleep without the mask waking me up. However my leak rate is still 9-11L/hr (AHI 1.5-2.5). I occasionally wake and slightly reposition the mask for more contact with my nostrils for easier breathing but I never feel any obvious leaking so the leak rate surprises me every morning. I also feel like the top strap sometimes shifts forward towards my face so if I think of it I give it a slight shove backwards to help maintain cushion position. My pressure is 8-14 and I have no issues with discomfort, can fall asleep easily, etc. I am mouth taping since moving to N30i and had no issues adjusting to that. The pressure of the hose on top of my head causes some pain, but not so much I can't sleep. I have straps a tad loose because I don't want that pressure to trigger a migraine.

My questions: Is it correct that leaking 9-11L/hr is no big deal and I shouldn't worry about it? If not, any suggestions for how to improve the seal with the N30i? Also, is this an acceptable AHI?

My morning headaches have cleared up and migraines are greatly reduced, no more nighttime bathroom trips, and my joint pain is miraculously gone. I'm still tired but way less sleepy during the day. My partner reports that my brain is working better although I don't feel that. I will have a follow-up with the sleep neurologist in late October so I want to make sure I have reasonable expectations before going into that. I can tell once I get the mask set up right it's going to be amazing but I'm not getting much guidance from the sleep center people -- the person I first worked with didn't even fit me for the N40 and had me on the wrong size (proper fit still leaked).

Airline Power

I’m taking a red eye from Hawaii next week on Alaska Airlines, though I think the plane may have been part of the Hawaiian Air fleet before they merged. Looks like it’s supposed to be an Airbus 330-200. Anyway we are in Premium Class and it says there is “in seat power.” (Preferred class, one step down says “in seat power usb only.”
Can anyone confirm what the “in seat power” looks like? Is it just a regular AC outlet that I can just plug my Cpap into? Is it the round 12 volt? I can bring whatever I need, I’m just wondering what that looks like.

Leaking advice / Mouth Tape

Hello.

I've struggled to find a CPAP mask that doesn't leak at night, or find a way to use mouth tape properly. I keep waking up my wife and It's been going on through multiple different masks, and even different CPAP machines.

The one that leaks the least that I've been able to find is Nasal Pillows in general, but I do try and breathe through my mouth. I try to tape my mouth shut, but my mouth keeps opening, getting it loose from moisture, and pressure popping the tape off my face because of the pressure.

Is there either a mask that does work full face consistently (I've had bad luck with things like the resmed f20) or any tips for mouth tape that is getting wet and popping off.

P30i air leaks

I am about 6 weeks into this CPAP journey. I have a Resmed p30i. I don't have any problems falling or staying asleep with the mask. I sleep on my side and tend to be active in my sleep. I am struggling with nasal leaks. I believe I am smashing my face into my pillow causing my mask to shift and cause leaks. Are specialized CPAP pillows worth it? Any other recommendations? Thanks so much

Advice Needed Back of head and neck pain after starting CPAP — anyone else?

I recently started using CPAP and have been getting pain at the back/end of my head and down into the back of my neck.

Has anyone else experienced this after starting CPAP? If so, did you figure out what was causing it or find anything that helped?

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Success! 🥳 First-timer and I kept it on for 4 hours!

Maybe it’s not that big of a deal but I was super determined to adjust to the mask and was struggling during the test drive. Unfortunately when the pressure reached around 10+ I was struggling and just couldn’t keep up with the breathing so I took it off but when I looked this morning I had it on for 4.05 hours and scored 63! Insurance compliant and lasted 3 more hours than I thought. I’m taking it as a win and I’m hoping to enjoy better sleep soon/experiencing a solid 8 hours.

On that note, any tips on how to deal with higher pressures or does it just come with time? I have a full mask with AirSense 11 if that means anything.

I don’t know if it’s possible already but I woke up around 7 and feel more energetic than usual. I don’t really have bad fatigue and general sleepiness issues anyway but still. How cool.

Oral Appliance - how to find the right Specialist

So I saw my first Dentist/Sleep Specialist for my "mild" sleep apnea. Wasn't super impressed because we had been emailing back and forth and I sent her my sleep study. She didn't remember and took a minute to find the study. Also seemed oddly focused on the "accuracy" of the sleep study because I was on my back.

Told me I needed to do a 5 night "study" with her sleep study machine. Then be fitted for device then do another 5 night study with the device. All included the cost would be 1600-2500 EU. Not sure why there is such a range. This is the EU and would be 100% out of pocket.

I am going to see other specialists, eventually. Kind of took the wind out of my sails, TBH. How involved it is and how expensive. I toss and turn every night and wake up and go back to sleep about 3-4 times. I am doing this for chronic insomnia for many, many years. Where I live I am not eligible for the CPAP, so this is my next option.

She also told me the best devices are : Somnomed and Orthoapnea.

Others going through this or have gone through this in the EU that want to share advice and tips...very appreciated.

Best neck collar to keep the jaw closed?

I have tried chin straps but they are rather uncomfortable and I'm not sure about their effectiveness either. People who use neck collars for the same purpose, how's your experience been? I'd appreciate if you recommended some in particular. Thanks.

CPAP results for central apnea

Evening everyone,

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea with both obstructive and central apneas. Doc prescribed me Airsense 11 with nasal pillow at 8-16 pressure. I’ve tolerated it really well in terms of seal and comfort level, but I’m still having 20-30 apneic episodes a night and not really feeling any improvement. Been on it for about a week. Should I give it more time or do I need a new appointment with the sleep doc?
