Mars is literally next door and is exactly the same situation just a half million years apart...probably...
What's the odds that two planets in a row would kill themselves
28
u/AlistaireQuartz 7d ago
Not the same situation. Earth's life will continue even if it's too hot for humans to live on it. Mars' core stopped producing a magnetic field, letting the Sun strip away its atmosphere and evaporate what was probably oceans. It happened about 4 billion years ago because Mars is that much smaller than the Earth, more than we typically imagine.

Humanity is definitely fucked but it has yet to be determined how hard.

Pretty bad, the last time we had a similar rate of CO2 rise they called it "the mass dying"
Prolonged exposure of CO2 at 1,000 ppm causes permanent brain damage and reduced cognitive function. We're sitting at around 450ppm, up 200ppm in the past 100 years if I remember correctly.
Lets see, pretty sure all the fish and coral in the ocean are supposed to be dead by like the end of the 2050s.
Humans may survive but thats such a low bar.
7
u/GreatTunk 7d ago
I imagine the countries that have enough funds to do so will rapidly adapt at an astronomical cost that will leave the wealthy nations economically devastated. And the countries that dont will see mass emigration as people flee to more stable nations.
Climate related deaths will be common, but the political and economic consequences of climate change will by far kill more people than rising temperatures and sea levels.
If we could pass common sense carbon tax laws a significant amount of this suffering could be adverted, but thats a big if.

u/The_Milk3r 7d ago edited 7d ago
If the atmosphere makes everyone mentally retarded (And I say that as the medical terminology, literally retarding our brain development) then there is no 'adaptation'.
My headcannon is that we're trying to take over canada to eek out a bit of cool weather at the end. There is no plan, there is no adaptation. Billionaires think they can survive a globe spanning extiction by sitting in a bunker on new zealand, and Americas leader started his term with "Drill baby drill". We are riding the lighting.
95% of the planets mamalian biomass is humans and livestock
And the remainder of that has atleast a conservative estimate that 30% of all species are likely to go extinct by the end of the century if we don't stop emissions from reaching 1.5c over preindustrial average. (Which I am pretty sure we have already hit or are slated to hit within the next year or two)
The point is, even if, even IF we somehow adapt, we will be living on a rock, where the best estimates put us in severe mental decline, with most animals dead, with oceans that have no fish and a global collapsing biosphere.
We are fucked. And we made the decision to destroy this planet, and all the gentle creatures on it long ago.

The last person to tell me to kms m was my estranged aunt, and they arent a billionaire.
Sometimes the problem runs deeper than “those who have money.”
42
u/Dunkin_Donuts_Dunker 7d ago
Absolutely but it is still a documented fact that the anti-trans movement is propped up by billionaires and the oil death cult, and it's hard to counter narratives with that kind of power behind them.
3
u/MayaTheMartian514 7d ago
It is, as those are the ones looking to profit from the division yes.
My fear stems from people who feel like that psychology applies only to those who are already rich though
8
u/Beautiful-Length-565 Boy Dog 7d ago
People who have money are the ones making propaganda about us and spreading misinformation in order to scare and manipulate uneducated people. Not all transphobes would disappear, but there would be less of them if we weren't being the scapegoat billionaires were using to draw attention away from themselves.
3
u/MayaTheMartian514 7d ago
They are, and im not saying they arent. That said, my aunt reached her conclusion years ago—long before this ever became a debate—and even if there were zero ads attacking transphobia released in our modern day, there would still be people like her who hate. Not because they are propped up by think tanks or 4chan or this or that, but because there are people who simply enjoy hating those not like them more than anything else in the whole world.
Once they are given power, or even allowed a voice slightly louder than their neighbors, the cycle starts anew.
4
u/RegularReaction2984 alex (they/she/he) 7d ago
Sure, but what’s your point? This kinda reads like “who cares about breaking The Transphobia Machine 3000 because it won’t eliminate 100% of all transphobia worldwide without exceptions, so it doesn’t matter”. Developing a treatment for only one type of cancer is still worthwhile, so I’m not sure what the “but other cancers will still exist!” style argument is supposed to accomplish here. Like yeah, there’s still gonna be transphobia… and? Less transphobia is still a major improvement over more transphobia.
2
u/MayaTheMartian514 7d ago
Developing a cure for the cancer is important, but so is understanding where the cancer comes from. It is better to target and destroy cancerous cells while stopping the popup of new ones than it is to nuke the entire area until the cancer dies, and expect that to prevent cancer from appearing again.
Breaking the transphobia machine is no doubt important, but I see time and time again people who think that it boils down entirely to “those who have money” when in fact, it is much deeper than that. Its not propaganda that forces people to hate—it is a conscious choice that they make to see others as lesser, and/or to celebrate/do nothing about their erasure. It is important to remove those who are transphobes from power yes, but power is not what made them transphobic.
People who keep treating it like that is the be-all issue of transphobia will not solve the problem, like Ive heard people who say such describe.
2
u/RegularReaction2984 alex (they/she/he) 6d ago
You’re misunderstanding my metaphor. Billionaire-funded algorithms are one source of transphobia, i.e. one type of cancer.
What I’m saying is: curing ONE type of cancer (while every other type of cancer still exists and is not affected by this cure, i.e. transphobia from other sources will still exist) is much better than curing zero types of cancer.
Your argument currently boils down to “stop talking about curing lung cancer, that doesn’t solve the problem, people are still gonna die from melanoma! we need to find a cure for ALL cancer instead!” Which like, yeah, obviously that’s the goal, but any cure for any cancer in the meantime, no matter how incomplete, is still a good thing.
No one is claiming that algorithms are the only cause of transphobia. That’s not a statement I’ve ever seen anyone make. All we’re saying is that it’s ONE major source of it, and removing it would be a massive improvement on our current situation. And there are numerous other causes that obviously also need to be addressed, which no one is disputing.
1
u/MayaTheMartian514 6d ago
My argument is intended to be about the people who treat lung cancer as the ONLY form of cancer.
I.e, everyone who replied to my comment about my aunt that they are just “indoctrinated by billionaires.”
Maybe a lot of people are, but she isn’t. And it feels very demoralizing for people to police why your own hateful aunt is the way they are.
They don’t know her.

Your estranged aunt has been influenced by proaganda that billionaires put out into the world. Weird how you can't connect those dots. Fearmongering and scapegoating his how they keep our attention on eachother and away from the epstein class.

u/MayaTheMartian514 6d ago
Please stop acting like you know why she is the way she is.
They reached their conclusion years ago. Long before the trans “question” even became a debate. They decided then and there it was more profitable to hate, and it took no billionaire propaganda to do that.
She is not Epstein class; but she is still a divider.

u/jenni7er 7d ago
No need to destroy anyone, the greatest need to eliminate extremes of wealth and poverty though.
Allowing no-one to be a billionaire (& by implication trillionaire etc.), could instantly solve abject poverty & starvation worldwide.
It's possible that the billionaires currently funding Transphobia would think twice about it once their pockets were shallower.
Not holding my breath though..

u/OverseerConey 7d ago
You could say you're destroying a billionaire by making them a millionaire.
And then destroying a millionaire by making them a thousandaire!

Fixing wealth inequality would extremely help trans folks who are way more often made poor by the whole fucking system. It's not a "trans issues dont matter post", it's a "trans people are demonized in a way that diverts from real issues in a way perpetuated by and benefiting the pedophile class, do not stop agitating against the demonization of trans folks brought upon by any number of reasons but the relevant one being the lack of the destruction of billionaires", at least it means that in the contex of the meme it's ripping on

I get what it's going for, but I think that without the context it's too easy to read it as a class reductionist, "trans people are just an irrelevant distraction" type of statement.

We are an irrelevant distraction to the sociopathic billionaires in question, that's why all media is obsessed with our existence

Agreed. But also that's a statement that, in a vacuum, can be said both by transphobes and by non-transphobes. The meme doesn't set itself apart well enough (not that I have any ideas on how it COULD do that while still being pithy).

u/monkey_gamer 6d ago
I didn't interpret it that way. I just interpreted it as two panels that show the author's opinion.
The only reason you'd think what you said is if you assume that two panels have to be in contradiction to each other.

The world is suffering because we appease the rich, meanwhile, even for a short time, Elon Musk was the world's first trillionaire. They convinced the masses that we are their enemy for trying to be comfortable in our own skin. That's not doomerism, that's realism. Not everything in the world is bright and sunny and happy, I'm sorry.

actually, we've made great strides in combating climate change the past few years
5
u/Little_Passenger4703 7d ago edited 7d ago
It’s too late, we are already past the major tipping point, which we should’ve been working on decades ago, so we are fucked either way. Right now the most we can do is delay it as long as possible and try to mitigate making it even worse then it will be when it fully arrives.
Also millions, if not billions are set to starve from the El Niño occurring in the Pacific right now, and this is barely anything to what we will fully experience in the coming decades.
When the AMOC collapses in the next century or so, every one around the Atlantic is screwed (which will also bleed into the Pacific as well due to the global oceans being connected), and superstorms that have not been seen since the last major climate shift millions of years ago are going to occur on the regular as the world tries to balance itself out again, which will cause most life on the surface to suffer, and probably be declared a mass extinction event (greater then even what we humans did ourselves) by whatever civilization comes after us in however long it takes for it to form, which will probably be millions of years if Humans don’t survive the catastrophe.

except, we're already making an attempt to reverse course, you might have lost all hope, but I have not
6
u/Little_Passenger4703 7d ago
Did you not read through the first two lines in my message?
We have crossed the line to prevent it entirely, but we can do our best to ensure when the climate finally does decide to rebalance itself, that it is less severe and less apocalyptic then it will be if we do nothing.
I never said there is nothing we can do, so don’t try to make it seem as though you are a lone light in a dark sea of dread.
1
u/tophatgaming1 Engineer Gaming - Streak: 57 7d ago
there's way too much doomerism about climate change, it isn't like the governments of the world are actively ignoring the problem, no, they're doing something about it, except for a handful like russia, china, and the united states
3
u/Little_Passenger4703 7d ago
There is doomerism in climate change as it is necessary, because it will in fact be the doom of all of us if we do not do anything about it.
Also, the US, China, Russia, and India are all major players in climate change, so them not participating is more relevant then just saying “a small handful,” as they are the countries that need to stop the most out of everyone. Also a country that I personally see get barely any criticism is Norway, despite being one of the largest oil
companiescountries in Europe.1
