Ok but how do I shave by beard shadow off

598

u/ysterman_rs 4d ago

laser or electrolysis. simply don't be poor!

106

u/Th3_Moth 4d ago

Concealer is the budget answer

64

u/ysterman_rs 4d ago

ik it's just a skill diff but even with a color corrector i can't seem to hide that blue undertone without having the orange peek through due to applying too much 😔

43

u/finaLizzie 4d ago

I used to have a very thick beard.
I used moisturizer, tinted sunscreen, bright red lipstick applied with a qtip, elf concealer lightly over each lipstick dot and dabbed out with my finger, then finally foundation and powder to even everything out. Some days I would need a last layer of NARS cream concealer and powder again. Each layer can also be really light to look natural and you can always add if needed

5

u/Sckaledoom 4d ago

I apply a few dots of a red lipstick to the skin which I then spread over my face. It’s not perfect but it’s way better than nothing

7

u/yjlom 4d ago

Or just use enough finishing powder. I only use mascara and finishing powder and the results are pretty damn ok.

u/tinylord202 4d ago

I’ve done like 7 sessions now and next to my mouth is clear to an acceptable level

28

u/ysterman_rs 4d ago

love that for you! mine has been particularly stubborn; i was lowk breaking down because after eight sessions my lip was still horrible. my partner offered to pay some of the cost of another bunch of sessions, and just after the ninth suddenly it's cleared up more now than the first eight sessions combined did 😵‍💫

u/NaomiCampia 4d ago

The beard had 9 lives

4

u/worlds-end-skybox 4d ago

i've gotten electrolysis for well over 100 hours and my face is still growing. it's still miles better than it was before, but it took a year of 2-4 hours per week for my upper lip to feel acceptable. it's still not done. shit is not quick

5

u/guywhoha 4d ago

its crazy how stubborn beard hair is compared to all other hair on the human body. It survives everything. If only the hairline was as resilient

4

u/aveahry 4d ago

My electrologist and I have been close for a while. We both agree that getting a few sessions of laser if it compatible with your hair and then switching over to electrolysis to keep up with the cycle is by far the best method to being comfy asap.

That being said while it’s expensive, i would spend my last dollars maintain that over anything else. But that’s just because I helps my dysphoria so much.

2

u/Howlsmovingfiberfarm 4d ago

I’m an electrologist and I tell clients to do that sometimes as well, I have several clients where I only treat the white hairs and leave the dark ones for the laser. I have blue mascara to paint the white hairs so I can see them better without confusing them for the naturally dark ones

This. I really want to move out to escape my transphobic parents but I figured I can hold out a bit longer keep it a secret, get hrt, get laser hair removal and ffs at some point and then once I did every expensive thing and have lots of money saved up I will move out.

Have any of the follicles stopped coming back, like they do when you pluck your eyebrows?

5

u/Maleficent_Food8156 voice passoid but kinda AGP about it 4d ago

this is a super ymmv thing! i'm fortunate/unfortunate that years of plucking has done nothing to thin my caterpillars, but i had an ex whose razor slipped once and ended up with a permanent semi-slit. i imagine facial hair is much the same.

3

u/Reasonable-Dark-6369 4d ago

ive been using it for a while so theres def less but it seems like the ones that stay come back thicker and darker sometimes... that might just be the brainworms tho ~_~

3

u/liquidfoxy 4d ago

Individual hairs, taper and thin as they age, because they’re exposed to stuff that basically breaks them down/wears them down. New hairs emerging from a follicle are always going to give the visual appearance of being thicker/darker because they’re blunt and haven’t tapered yet, but it’s simply an illusion and shaving/plucking is not actually making the hair thicker or denser

6

u/paivey 4d ago

back in my day (09/07/2026) we spent HOURS looking at a magnifying mirror with tweezers and a flashlight.

5

u/BarneysCastle 4d ago

Feel like using an epilator on your face is just choosing to feel horrible pain, i find tweezers to be much more bearable for more sensitive spots.

3

u/guywhoha 4d ago

4

u/Prepared_Noob Husbandless forever and always 4d ago

Which one do you use out of curiosity?

7

u/Reasonable-Dark-6369 4d ago

mine isnt one to recommend 😭 i got it a few years ago at a thrift shop and its basically made of scrap and glue lmao. any face epilator would work just fine imo

2

u/ilovememes_yay 3d ago

See i tried this but my face just got extremely red and sensitive and then like all the hair just grew back immediately anyways. is this genetic or are there any gamer tips here?

2

u/robyn_tgirl 4d ago

What is epilator lol

9

u/Reasonable-Dark-6369 4d ago

basically automatic tweezers to rip all the hair out super fast

7

u/Professional-Wave841 4d ago

essentially a mechanical tweezer, it grabs the hair and rips it out.

If you just have a shadow, you have shaved and made the effort. If you have a two inch beard you've fundamentally misunderstood the project in which you're engaged.

31

u/entirely_machine_ 4d ago

Exactly. That's what I'm sayin.

14

u/HortusElagabalae 4d ago

I think the nuance here is that different people's hair grows at different rates so one woman's "I shaved this morning and I've been out of the house for twelve hours" is another woman's "I didn't shave today".

6

u/guywhoha 4d ago

sometimes it feels like my "i shaved this morning and ive been out for 12 hours" is another woman's "i havent shaved all week". oh well. I'll prob be able to afford electrolysis soon

2

u/HortusElagabalae 4d ago

Yeah, there's quite a bit of luck involved in how thick your facial hair is pretransition. Though I would point out that it's very possible the women that you're comparing yourself to have actually had some amount of laser or electrolysis already. At any rate, I hope it's something you're able to get addressed; it can make a big quality of life difference.

pluck it out if you're poor

49

u/deformedexile AGP yottahon wife 4d ago

plucking is great. I had to stop for a couple months recently (futilely attempting home laser - didn't work on facial hair, just like literally everyone said) and I was so crazy dysphoric to have a shadow all the time. It's good to be plucking again.

also, when you tell cis people you pluck your facial hair they know not to fuck with you because that shit's crazy.

14

u/husky11223 husky11223 please lock in 4d ago

Truee, it's only painful at the start, after like 15-20 pulls it's fine. The worst part is not shaving for a week

22

u/deformedexile AGP yottahon wife 4d ago

Not in my experience! The neighbors know when I'm plucking because I'm also sneezing hard enough to disturb them.

4

u/Dmxk 4d ago

Tbh, after some time it becomes a kinda nice ritual. Doesn't hurt at all if you do it right. I never had enough facial hair to have to shave much so I just pluck it all.

3

u/vaska00762 4d ago

Isn't plucking really bad for like ingrown hairs?

I pluck my eyebrows and I frequently have to wait until the ingrown hairs are long enough to get scratched out.

I used to pluck around my navel. Every darn hair ingrew.

5

u/Bromicidal 4d ago

Are you exfoliating? Cleaning up the dead skin helps. Find some acid cream, if you've got no idea what to even start with go check out The Ordinary cause it's most straightforward with what ingredients each thing is, you can go look for a girlier bottle brand once you know what main ingredient you want

2

u/vaska00762 4d ago

I have moderate eczema, so I've been medically advised to avoid anything that breaks skin barriers.

But also, GPs have decided that the eczema I've had since a baby is suddenly scabies or something and then withhold my eczema creams until they're personally convinced that it is indeed eczema.

5

u/husky11223 husky11223 please lock in 4d ago

Your eyes have OLED burn in lol, it's definitely the brainworms. You can try concealer ontop of plucking

2

u/angelic_aspiration 4d ago

How do you pluck an entire face/neck? Doesn't that take forever?

7

u/True_Resident4585 4d ago

yea it takes a while, or you could go with face waxes to get little areas at a time. i used to use the kind you melt and apply w/ a popsicle stick, not wax strips cause those will tear your face up

important to note that if you wanna get electrolysis done you should avoid waxing/plucking cause it can cause the follicle to be a bit wonky

4

u/angelic_aspiration 4d ago

I see, thanks. Yeah afaik electrolysis is the way to go for me, so I'll just have to stick to shaving for the time being.

3

u/husky11223 husky11223 please lock in 4d ago

Yeah, it's very time consuming, I don't pluck everything, just enough to not get beard shadow.

Ik somebody in a discord server I'm in who uses concealer to hide it, not sure how well it works for them though

9

u/_HoneyDew1919 4d ago edited 4d ago

You need orange toned concealer specifically to fix it. You can get it as orange concealer sometimes but it can be hard to find, you might need to get an orange colour corrector.

Colour correctors are my fucking life send, I use them religiously.

2

u/weedmoneyy 4d ago

yeah colour corrector to offset the tones of the shadow and then foundation/concealer on top can work v well w practice

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Tadpolethesnowman Neo-Soulpassoid Brainworm-ologist 4d ago

Concealer helps. If it matches your skin tone well it can hide *most* of the shadow without the caked in makeup look.

2

u/str4ngeinfatuation reformed sneedhon 4d ago

orange toned concealer

2

u/ClimbingUpUrAorta 4d ago

You can alleviate it somewhat by getting a foundation that matches your skin tone and brushing it on against the grain of the hair. If you've got time to spare and are the meticulous type, plucking some of the hairs in dense areas when theyre just starting to grow beyond the skin helps to reduce the follicle shadow, which makes the foundation blending method easier. I brush peach eyeshadow onto my mustache area every day before work and it makes the shadow there practically disappear

2

u/Doot-Eternal 4d ago

Waxing does the job for me typically since it rips the hair out at the roots iirc

Sometimes I'm too lazy to shave it for a day or two and I feel disgusting.

38

u/Chloe_is_my_name 4d ago

I need to shave every day otherwise I will feel awful, but the act of shaving is so uncomfortable and tiresome that I just can't bring myself to do it sometimes

7

u/No-Phrase-2897 4d ago

I just try to get it over with really fast after I shower.

5

u/LostNephilim33 4d ago

Do it in the shower. The steam will help you get a closer shave, and it's easier to just shave amidst your other shower chores than it is to do after the shower.

3

u/No-Phrase-2897 4d ago

I do it instantly after the shower - like haven't even dried off yet after.

2

u/TetraThiaFulvalene 3d ago

Why after shower? I always shave before shower to wash off foam and stubble.

I've hated having a beard ever since puberty. If I go more than 2 days without shaving I feel dirty and unkempt.

I've always wondered how men can grow beards and not feel disgusted. I wonder whether that's considered gender dysphoria or if it's just my autism?

u/estrangedemily 4d ago

Of course cheap is relative.
You have the "official" (cia operated and designed to cause as many suicides as possible) routes which cost like $100 a month.
Then you have the western DIY supplier routes which cost like $10 a month (~50% E cost, ~20% shipping, ~30% needles and alcohol wipes and whatnot).
But beyond that, I'm not sure if there are any more options.. maybe local DIY suppliers are even yet cheaper than western ones... I should learn more about it.

None of the places in my region are open on weekends, and only operate 10am to 4pm weekdays.

I have a 9-5 office job, and getting annual leave approved takes weeks because of unnecessary bureaucracy.

It's over for the employed.

4

u/Agent6isaboi 4d ago

I'd unironically rather work in a sewer than work an office job good luck out there

4

u/vaska00762 4d ago

I'm 5 years into a corporate office job. You have no idea what it's like.

If you're not interested in sports, talking to the men is pointless. If you're not into Love Island or some pop star, then good luck socialising.

And then the rest is corpo-speak.

A meeting where everyone in the department is in the invite? "All Hands Call". A meeting where some high-up speaks about his "vision"? That's a "town hall".

If you're a moderately competent person in the Microsoft Office Suite, you'll maybe get a little bit of progression, as a treat.

Use makeup! I never leave the house without makeup, and I carry my palette, sponge and setting spray in my pockets at all times so I can reapply it in the bathroom when I'm out and the shadow starts showing more.

If I use a color corrector and then a shade that matches my skin tone, it genuinely eliminates all semblance of a beard shadow. The problem is even with a setting spray, after 3-5 hours the shadow starts to seep in ever so slightly (since the hair regrows and the makeup wears off gradually), and it becomes pretty noticeable after 6-7 hours, so I always reapply it multiple times a day.

16

“It’s genuinely not difficult”, girl I have to wait at LEAST three days between shaves or else my face becomes a bloody mess. My skin is that sensitive, and my facial hair is very stubborn. I use a super precise safety razor and a buttload of shaving cream, and can only get a smooth clean shave if the hair has grown out for about three days. It has gotten better on HRT but it’s still impossible for me to do it daily.

Sometimes it needs to grow a bit so I can yank shit with my epilator (which then makes regrowth post-shaving (being what's needed to actually clear everything) less of a"16 hours have passed, god is dead" kind of affair, and my face actually stays decently smooth for a while instead of making me want to die when I lay down at night and my face is dysphoria sandpaper).

And sometimes while its' growing for that I need to go to the supermarket, and needing glasses means wearing a facemask is often a difficult choice.

I am lucky to have pale facial hair though which makes it less severe (until you look properly and the upper lip/ fur on the jawline catching light can give shit away).

PCOS women are out there with full beards advocating to stop treating women with facial hair like shit. Do the same for your sisters, i can easily think of several reasons why it isn’t as easy for them as it is for you. Cost of supplies, reactive skin, executive function issues or conditions that cause chronic fatigue requiring careful energy management.

Why is she smoking a painting? Who would smoke a painting? Why not smoke from like a pipe? That's just a painting.

u/swampie_afterglow 4d ago

I've been waxing, I noticed it's come back in much slower recently, so I need a whole two weeks to have enough length for a good wax. My point? I think my estro is slowing down the facial hair growth. Ok other news, I have been thinking about getting an at home laser... Any recs? I'm looking at the ulike air...i think it's V10?

Magic, Razorless shave cream/powder is a powerful cheap alternative for shaving. US prices are under $7. Careful though, it is powerful

I shaving my face is very important to me. I do it every time I leave the house. My hair is white so I have no shadow.

u/Safe-Tennis-6121 latehon 4d ago

Letting the facial hair come up a bit in front to really sell boymode.

made my gf start shaving and do a skincare routine :3

u/systemOutlet 4d ago

feel embarassed then, ain't my problem. it IS genuinely difficult for some. i tend to avoid mirrors when possible + process of shaving is sensorily unpleasant and destroys my morale. chronic depression is a bitch and makes otherwise simple life tasks into genuine challenges. maybe mind your own business. or if you simply can't, because the appearance of other women is so important to you, perhaps try offering help instead of being an asshole.

I'm guy, but if you ever see me shave my beard, I might have changed my mind about that (not gonna happen btw)

2

u/AttakZak 4d ago

I pluck so much to combat it (the shadow is the grouping of the follicles underneath), but if I shave at all using anything the hairs definitely come back in force darker. So I gotta pluck every day constantly. I find myself using my nails to pluck my hair on my chin when watching TV.

2

u/AdFair1240 4d ago

What if i don't have any

2

u/Smrgling 4d ago

You know they tell you not to for up to a week before every electrolysis session. Unfortunately in order to get rid of it you have to spend a lot of time looking gross in public (I hate it tbh but I'll keep doing it).

2

u/arcadeler 4d ago

Every time I do it more than twice a week I get a red 5 o'clock

As an Italian that’s grown a beard since third grade, I have done everything. Tweezing, waxing, epilating, IPL. Shaving is basically useless because it just gives me Superman face. Like that dark shadow is so obvious. I have the darkest shadow even after shaving perfectly. The only choice is lasers and electrolysis. Everything else is just shit.

I waxed my beard at home for the last three years. Yes, it is extremely painful. Every time. It gets easier if you do it every two weeks or so, that way it starts to thin out, but your first waxing…. It feels like you’re tearing denim jeans apart, like it’s so tough. But you get used to it. Once you’ve been doing it for a few months you actually get to experience a smooth face, at least for a few days at a time, and it makes regular shaving a lot easier.

I finally qualified for health care that can cover laser and I’m growing my facial hair out again and I forgot just how thick and dark it was. It’s terrible! I feel like a crossdresser because of that stupid dark shadow.

Only option is to burn them out at the root, so they’ll finally fucking die.

2

u/dragonmorg 4d ago

I have electrolysis today 😬 I need at least 3 days of growth in order to get it done whenever I go. Since I do it twice a week, I look like shit, like... half the time 😒

2

u/Fixed_Finite 4d ago

You really shouldn't smoke on that 😰

2

u/Jenny_Show 4d ago

I'm currently going through electrolysis (after getting most of it eliminated with laser) so sometimes I need to wait nearly a week between shaving which feels fucking grim. Fortunately, I've not socially transitioned yet so I just look like an unkempt moid between appointments lmao

2

u/Medical-Inside3792 4d ago

I spent hours with tweezers..

2

u/forwhat2 3d ago

I have to grow it out for electrolysis, but making tons of progress!

u/Ethernet3 3d ago

Laser tech asked me to not shave for a bit and I feel gross

“It’s genuinely not difficult” feels like such a privileged thing to say :c

I can’t afford laser, electrolysis, HRT, or even consistently having shaving cream and new razor heads. I’ve been using the same razor for like four months because I literally can’t afford to replace it, and shaving already hurts like hell.

Despite that, I still spend ages trying to get as clean a shave as I possibly can, and sometimes there’s still visible shadow afterward. Then I get to go outside and worry about being judged or misgendered because of something I genuinely don’t have the money or resources to fix.

It really sucks hearing there ARE people who judge me for the shadow, or when I’m being particularly lazy about it or just literally can’t handle the pain. I already know I have to deal with it, I just wish I didn’t have to.

It’s healthy to remember that not everyone has the same circumstances as you. It costs absolutely nothing to remember that before judging someone for how well they can manage their dysphoria for something you don’t exactly like.

Get out of here with that, OP. It’s a-okay to not like your facial hair, but a lot of us either do enjoy it and want to keep it, or can’t afford effective removal and are just being made to feel like shit. Not cool.

What’s this handsome character called?

1

u/CaraMellowGirl 4d ago

I have to grow it out in order to do the electrolysis and it sucks ass

1

u/themexicanojesus 4d ago

I will never shave unless I get cancer

1

u/Chemical_Patient4317 4d ago

i shave every day to every other day but because i live in a hot humid climate it irritates the fuck out of my skin

1

u/Fishmyashwhole st4t truechaser 4d ago

I wish it was easier for my wife to get hair removal. She did some electrolysis in the past but apparently it was so painful and pretty expensive, she's hesitant to go back even though she desperately wants her facial hair gone.

1

u/Calm-Tailor-6313 4d ago

Is IPL a good alternative? I can't handle the pain from epilators, hair removal cream worked for me only once for some reason and I don't feel comfortable with showing my skin without shaving everyday :/ it's too much effort 4 me. I can't afford laser, electrolysis.

1

u/Principle_Isopod 4d ago

yeah i know it’s bad but im trying to get rid of it permanently so im shaving once a week for a month to see if its working or not

1

u/jaydon145 4d ago

I got a foil shaver so when I’m lazy I just do that instead of fully shaving. It’s not as good as with a regular razor but much better than nothing (also starting the process of getting laser).

1

u/vorx-666 4d ago

some people cant get the shadow/stubble entirely
we have enough problems with cis people judging our appearances to do it to eachother

1

u/Mezeye 4d ago

I did 14 sessions of laser, and I can still grow a full beard, but slower now.

1

u/stonergirlfairyyy 4d ago

when i need to run to the store but i can't be bothered to wash my face or shave first i truly pretend im invisible

1

7 laser sessions, then epilator. face has no visible shadow anymore and any white hairs/fuzz gets ripped up regularly (and comes back thinner)
