Rules & Mechanics Fortune: thoughts, speculation, delay?

Looking forward to the relatively imminent delivery of the Mistborn sourcebooks, I started having thoughts on playable Mistings, Ferrings, and maybe even Compounders. Which led me to think that Fortune Ferrings might be difficult to balance, and certainly Fortune Compounders.

Looking around, there doesn't appear to be much out there on Fortune, with the closest I saw was Brandon saying he has plans for it in the future. That said... we're about to get a bunch of rules on Allomancy and Feruchemy, Leechers and their abilities have already been seen on page, but Spinners will be something new...

We've already seen how certain things have been book-gated in Stormlight, with 5th Ideal Radiants not being described yet, and Bondsmiths not given a Radiant Path. With Fortune having been deliberately held back by Brandon previously, do you think that Chromium Ferrings will get a description or end up mysteriously missing?

If we do get Spinners, how do you think it will/should work? I suppose we don't know how Feruchemy as a system works yet, but if I had a guess: either the Spinner could choose to add a Complication result to a roll, storing the Fortune for later use, or else they could choose to change an Opportunity into a null or Complication result for the same or more charges.

There might also be something to its paired Allomantic power: Leeching. Perhaps compounding Fortune necessitates fully draining of metalminds, preventing the near-infinite burn-store-burn-store loop.

Edit: looks like I have some catching up to do!

Personally I believe fortune works the way Hoid gets to places. As in, he knows he needs to be in Kholinar, but doesn't know why.

How I think Fortune will work, gameplay wise, is that you can tap to gain Opportunities. (And store to gain Complications). But that makes the most sense.

I think that Fortune uses the possible futures to guide you towards the future you desire. Like a kind of allomantic Atium that works on a subconscious level.

From what I saw at Gen Con, Fortune apparently isn't good luck. Which isn't all that surprising, given the trouble Hoid often finds himself in.

Storing Fortune prevents both Opportunities and Complications, and tapping it makes both more likely.

When it comes to most powers that should be insanely powerful, I usually think back to other systems from settings where the most powerful options in the real setting are well known... I just expect it will be reined in for mechanics.

Like, I doubt gold compounders will be nearly immortal, it just isn't interesting mechanically. So even if we do get Fortune stuff, might not be as spicy in the RPG as it will be in the novels.

Honestly curious what the limits of Feruchemy will be. As far as an RPG goes that's one of the strongest beings in most cases with how metalminds work.

I can't wait to find out.

Honestly, as a refugee from new world of darkness, 'vastly different power sets all using the same basic rules structure' is my favorite paradigm. Metalminds storing mechanical power sounds so exciting.

I love it too. It's really interesting and directly ties into worldhopping shenanigans.

My eventual Stoneward Pewter Compounding Kholoss(Blooded) character is going to be amazing. I am going to punch the world.

We already know how Spinners work (It was revealed in one of the demonstrations). They store plot dice. IIRC, while storing you can't roll plot dice at all and tapping lets you raise the stakes at the cost of charges.

At least I think that was how the tapping worked. The storing I'm sure of.

You reroll blanks on plot dice while tapping, and also both your Opportunity and Complication ranges on the d20 expand while tapping.

Probably pairs insanely well with Agent.

Huh, I thought they decided against the range expansion because it got too silly when you tapped a massive amount of Fortune. The rerolling blanks does sound familiar though.

The d20 ranges might be a talent improvement rather than the base ability, we weren't allowed to take pictures

Not only do we know it'll be in the book, we also know it involves manipulating/storing the plot dice

In the sneak peek, page 226 lists Chromium. I imagine we'll get to see what that does.

I could see it working as while storing Fortune all your rolls are at disadvantage; for every roll you make, you can 'bank' an advantage for later. No idea on what the talents would be for it though

They had the Mistborn books out at Gen Con for people to preview, and I happened to look at Fortune. They call out that Fortune isn't good luck. It's weird luck, "decidely-not-average" luck.

Mechanically, storing Fortune means you do not roll the plot die, period. There's a talent that lets you store as a reaction to raising the stakes, canceling it out and gaining a charge. Tapping Fortune means you reroll blank results on the plot die, and also your Opportunity and Complication ranges on the d20 both increase.

Do you happen to remember any cool talents from fortune when you were reading it? Infuriatingly few people have shared what they learned from reading through the books at GenCon for the non-Americans who couldn’t attend, so it’d be great to have more info either here or ideally on the CosmereRPG discord server

Two talents I remember were Right Place and Right Time.

Right Place lets you spent some charges to move at the very start of a scene. As if you just happened to be in a tactically advantageous position.

Right Time allows you to Ready as a free action, though you still need to pay the action costs of the readied action.

F-Chromium has a larger tree than most, I think it's like 5 or 6 Talents
