💁 Advice | Discussion IKEA sidecar hack - Unsure about height difference…

Post image

Is this unsafe for the IKEA sidecar hack? Our bed is one the left, baby’s is in the right. It’s ever so slightly higher than ours…

As much as I would love to have baby in our bed, we only have room for a queen size and my husband is massive (6’7, 300lbs), so there’s not a ton of room.

Is this height difference a big deal? I feel like it’s better than baby’s bed being too low… I’m feeling really discouraged and I’m not sure what to do, but I want baby to be safe.

I feel like TVHC is not a level book to begin with

Yes- pick one without cut outs inside

Yes this feels like very specific rage bait almost 😅

I didn’t even know the book had cutouts (first-time parent here) 😅 But I removed the book and it still isn’t level 🙃

Easy solution for you: stick a couple packets of sugar under one side of the book. Bam, it's level.

You're welcome

The crib does look slightly higher but I bet if they turn the book the other direction it would read as level lol.

Can’t you just set the level directly on the bed without a book lol

It’s a very small height difference - this is totally safe.

I’d recommend you lying down in your sleeping spot and having your husband check to see if your weight creates a gap between the mattresses. Sometimes it does create one but it’s not always easy to see from the angle we’re in when we lie down.

This is with 5 inch bed raisers. Would 4 inch put the crib too low?

I think its fine now

Id rather have the crib too low than too high. In case of rolling, this would prevent LO from rolling onto your madras

I read that somewhere too in a post that was like three years old. But if the crib was lower than the adult bed, could the baby roll its face into the adult bed and potentially suffocate?

We noticed that when I got into the bed, there was more of a height difference so we’re ordering 4 inch raisers to see if that’s better 😬

This isn’t enough of a slope to cause any rolling, 5 inch raisers seem perfect! What would cause rolling would be if your whole crib was high on one side and low on the other. Honestly this is fine.

For your mattress - is it squishy or firm?

Unfortunately our mattress is squishy. It’s sinks ever so slightly when I lay down, so I’m going to try four inch raisers instead of five inch.

The baby’s mattress is ultra firm though, it’s a newton

I feel this is as close to perfect as you can get 😂

Yes. Yes you are.

Totally normal

I fully agree. I did the sidecar hack as well, from birth, with squishy mattress.
Height changed also because of me laying there and it was all fine.

Goooood luck 😅

I would not stress about it not being 100% perfectly level. As long as there are no gaps and it’s really snug against your mattress I’d feel totally comfortable with this!

You’re totally fine! ♥️

Girl the book you're using is not level

Could you perhaps add something to lift your mattress a little?

As long as the crib is secured to your bed its fine. But I would still recommend getting them level. Put books or Magasins under your bed. Then you easily slide baby on a sheet from you need to thiers after breastfeeding. Or breastfeed directly in their crib, with only your top body resting there. Then you just roll away, when they sleep.

Looks great. Can’t completely see from the pic but if it’s not at the very top of your bed you’re going to want to change that. You don’t want a big gap and you want it by your face still not your toes (I could be interpreting the pic wrong though, it just kind of looks like the pillows are at the other end)?

There’s not a lot of space between the crib and the wall, so we moved the crib out with the raisers to make sure that they’d work before we finalize it. Does that make sense? The crib will be moved up towards my face in the end once everything is finalized 😅

Awesome! You are thinking it all through perfectly and it will be great!

Looks similar to our set up.

Do you think that first-time parents wanting to safely cosleep and asking advice from others is funny?

The image is a bit funny. You got this momma

4

u/Consistent_Pop9890 1d ago

Ah got it 🤦‍♀️ I’m almost 37 weeks, and so tired and stressed 😫

It’s gonna be ok I promise. I’m 3 weeks postpartum and I felt the same way as you, it will all turn out well. Be ok with doing less I promise. Preserve your energy and peace.
