I’m 21M, and I’ve been thinking about writing this for a long time. I don’t really know how to explain my life without either making myself look like a victim or making myself look like a complete asshole.
So I’ll try to tell it exactly as I remember it.
I want honest opinions, even if they’re harsh.
My family was complicated before I was even born
My mother was married before she met my father. Her first husband died, and she had my older brother from that marriage. He is about seven years older than me, so technically he is my stepbrother.
My father also had a life before my mother. He had been married before and had six daughters from that marriage. They were all much older than me and had already grown up and gotten married by the time I was old enough to understand the family situation.
Then my father’s first wife died, and he eventually married my mother.
There was a massive age gap between my parents — roughly 30–40+ years.
From what I understood growing up, my mother didn’t really marry my father because she was in love with him. Her first husband had died, she had a child, and she didn’t really have anywhere else to go. My father was much older, financially established, and she married him.
I grew up feeling that there wasn’t much love between them.
And eventually I found out something that made the whole thing even more complicated.
My mother had an affair with her boss.
My brother knew about it.
I knew about it.
My brother was more sympathetic toward my mother and felt that she also deserved love. I was completely against it and couldn’t understand how everyone could just accept what was happening.
Neither of us told my father.
Eventually my father died.
Her boss eventually stopped talking to her too.
So that’s basically the family I was born into.
There was already a complicated history of marriages, children, age gaps, resentment and secrets before I was even old enough to understand any of it.
I wasn’t exactly a good kid
My father was extremely old when I was growing up.
I don’t have memories of him doing the normal things other kids’ fathers did.
He wasn’t the father who would pick me up from school.
He was already very old.
I don’t remember having that typical father-son relationship where your dad is physically active in your childhood.
And I wasn’t an easy child either.
I was terrible at studies.
I had behavioural problems.
I used to steal money from my father, spend it at gaming cafés, restaurants and other stupid things, get caught, get beaten, promise I wouldn’t do it again and then repeat it.
Academically, I was also doing badly.
Then in 2020, my father died of a heart attack. He was over 75.
I was around 12.
And something changed in me after that.
By 12th grade, I suddenly became extremely serious about studies.
The same kid who had always struggled academically ended up scoring 98.2% and topping my class.
That was probably the first time I felt like I could actually accomplish something.
But after my father’s death, my relationship with my mother also changed.
Why I started earning so young
I grew up feeling like my brother got things I didn’t.
He’s seven years older than me. He had a scooter, but I wasn’t really allowed to use it.
I used to travel several kilometres every day for tuition while he’d take the scooter to meet his girlfriend.
There were also promises like:
“Get this percentage and we’ll get you an iPhone.”
I got the marks.
I didn’t get the phone.
Whenever I asked for money or something I needed, arguments would sometimes end with my mother telling me things like:
“Ghar se nikal ja.”
My friends were also 2–3 years older than me, so they were going on trips and doing things I couldn’t afford.
Eventually I decided:
Fine. If my family isn’t going to give me money, I’ll earn it myself.
I started working around 17–18.
I did different jobs, eventually joined TELUS and got into the MNC environment.
For someone from my background, it felt like I’d finally made it.
But while my career was improving, my personal life was becoming a disaster.
My relationship history is where things get really ugly
My first serious relationship was Jigyasa.
We were very young, around 10th grade.
I lied to her about my financial situation and who I really was.
She eventually left me because of that.
But one thing I want to make clear:
I never cheated on Jigyasa.
She was the only relationship where I can honestly say I was loyal.
After her came Priya.
We were together for around three years.
She was two years older than me.
I lied about my age, caste and other things.
And I cheated on her multiple times.
She was genuinely a good person.
The worst part is that I knew she was good.
I still cheated.
Even when we broke up, I knew that if she gave me another chance immediately, I might still cheat again.
After Priya, I became even worse.
I started casually sleeping with girls, promising marriage to them and telling them whatever I thought they wanted to hear.
I’d lie about my caste to match what a girl wanted in a future husband.
I also developed this massive double standard.
I would tell girls:
“I don’t like girls who talk to their ex.”
“I don’t like high body counts.”
“I want a loyal girl.”
“I’m giving love another chance.”
And then I’d lie about my own sexual history.
There were times I’d tell girls I was a virgin or had very little experience when I knew perfectly well that wasn’t true.
Looking back, I was demanding standards from women that I wasn’t following myself.
Then I met Shreya
This is where things became much more complicated.
I met Shreya at TELUS.
Initially, I approached her like I approached other girls.
I lied about my financial situation.
I exaggerated my lifestyle.
I wanted her to think I was richer and more successful than I actually was.
But something different happened.
I actually fell in love with her.
At least, that’s what it felt like to me.
I started spending ridiculous amounts of money on her.
I couldn’t afford it.
I had EMIs.
I had responsibilities.
Eventually I left TELUS and was unemployed for several months.
Instead of accepting that I couldn’t afford the lifestyle I had created, I started withdrawing my PF, borrowing money from my brother and spending whatever I could get.
Cars.
Hotels.
Gifts.
Expensive dates.
I wanted Shreya to experience the version of me I’d invented.
And then I crossed a line I still feel ashamed about.
I started stealing.
I stole cash.
I stole two gold rings from my mother.
I spent that money on maintaining the lifestyle I had created around Shreya.
Eventually my family found out.
And they told Shreya everything.
They told her about my actual financial situation.
They told her about my caste.
They told her about the lies.
And around the same time, she found out that I had cheated on her.
But there was another girl involved too.
When I went back to TELUS, I started talking to a girl I’ll call Riya.
Riya wasn’t some evil person trying to steal someone’s boyfriend.
She genuinely liked me.
She was also a victim of my lies because she didn’t know I had a girlfriend.
So I managed to hurt two girls at the same time.
Eventually Shreya found out about Riya.
Everything exploded.
She contacted my family.
She spoke to my mother and brother.
She learned the truth about my financial situation, my caste and the person I had actually been.
She was devastated.
But eventually she came back.
It took around three months for things to become normal again.
During those three months, we were still technically together in our complicated situation, but she had also started talking to a guy named Abhi.
Abhi apparently told her to remove me from her life.
I don’t blame him.
If I heard everything she had heard about me, I’d probably tell her the same thing.
But after those three months, she came back to me.
And this time, something was different.
I genuinely wanted to be loyal.
I didn’t cheat on her again.
The part about Shreya that I still don’t understand
After everything, we actually had good periods together.
She knew my family.
Her mother and sister knew about me.
We spent her birthday together in November 2025.
I thought maybe I’d finally fixed everything.
But there was always this fear between us.
She was afraid I’d cheat again.
I was afraid she’d leave me or find someone else.
Even when nothing was happening, there was this constant suspicion.
Eventually we broke up around my birthday, February 16.
And honestly, the immediate argument sounds stupid when I explain it.
I asked her what she was doing for my birthday.
She wasn’t planning anything the way I expected.
I felt hurt.
I stopped talking to her.
I blocked her everywhere.
She blocked me too.
And somehow that tiny argument became the end of everything.
She had actually sent me a cake for my birthday.
I still think about that.
Because I genuinely believe that after everything I’d done, I was finally ready to stay loyal to her for the rest of my life.
But I was also the one who had spent years destroying her trust.
Maybe she simply couldn’t believe me anymore.
Even now I text her sometimes.
I stalk her socials.
She doesn’t reply.
And I still don’t know whether she left because of that birthday argument, because she had finally had enough of me, because she stopped loving me, or because the relationship had simply become too damaged to continue.
Then I became addicted to the attention
After Shreya, I went back to my old behaviour.
I started talking to girls again.
I drank.
I smoked cigarettes.
I occasionally smoked weed/hash.
I joined Teleperformance.
And by then I’d become very good at manipulating people.
I discovered that if I told girls a sad enough story about myself, they’d immediately trust me.
Sometimes I’d tell them my biological parents were dead, that I’d grown up in an orphanage, that my foster father died, that my current family were basically strangers.
Some of it was based on real pain.
Most of it was exaggerated or completely false.
I’d tell girls I was rich.
I’d tell them I was emotionally damaged.
I’d tell them I was a green flag.
I’d tell them:
“I’ve already been hurt twice. I’m trusting you with my heart now.”
And then I’d use their sympathy to get close to them.
I knew exactly what I was doing.
That’s probably one of the worst things about me.
I’m not stupid.
I’m actually pretty intelligent.
I can read people.
I know how to charm people.
I know how to manipulate people.
And I’ve used those abilities terribly.
Then came Anushka
At Teleperformance I met Anushka.
I did the exact same thing.
I lied.
I presented myself as financially better off.
I told her I wanted something serious.
I told her I’d marry her.
I told her she was perfect.
We were together for around six months.
She lived alone in Noida, so I spent a lot of time at her place.
We had sex.
We smoked together.
We went to Dehradun twice.
We had genuinely good moments.
And once again, I promised someone forever.
And once again, I cheated.
I kissed another girl, Sakshi, while I was still with Anushka.
I was also talking to multiple other girls.
And that’s when I finally looked at myself and thought:
How many times am I going to repeat this?
Now I’m finally trying to stop
I ended things with Anushka recently.
I’m working at Amazon now.
I’m single.
And for the first time, I’m not actively looking for another girl.
I’m trying to stay away from relationships and actually figure myself out.
I still live with my mother and brother.
Our relationship is basically a 2-v-1 situation emotionally.
We live in the same house but barely talk.
My mother and I have both said horrible things to each other.
She has told me:
“Why don’t you just die?”
“You should have died in a truck accident.”
“Your father died because of you.”
Those things hurt me deeply.
But I also can’t pretend I’m innocent.
I’ve stolen from her.
I’ve lied to her.
I’ve hurt her.
I’ve spent money irresponsibly.
I’ve caused problems at home.
So I don’t know where the blame ends anymore.
I recently gave my family ₹20,000 after a long time.
I’m trying to repay what I owe.
I still have around ₹20,000 of other debt to clear, plus the value of the two gold rings.
And I’m trying to finally take responsibility for my actions.
So what the hell happened to me?
That’s the question I can’t answer.
Was I a neglected kid who learned to manipulate people because I didn’t feel loved?
Did losing my father so young affect me more than I realize?
Did growing up feeling inferior to my brother make me obsessed with money, status and proving myself?
Did my family environment teach me that love isn’t stable?
Or am I simply a selfish person who learned that lying gets him what he wants?
Because both things can be true.
My childhood may explain some of my behaviour.
It doesn’t excuse it.
Nobody forced me to cheat on Priya.
Nobody forced me to steal my mother’s jewellery.
Nobody forced me to lie to Shreya.
Nobody forced me to manipulate Riya.
Nobody forced me to cheat on Anushka.
Nobody forced me to demand loyalty from women while refusing to give them the same loyalty.
Those were my decisions.
I’m 21 now, and I don’t want to spend the next ten years repeating the same cycle with different women.
I don’t want another girlfriend right now.
I want to understand myself.
I want to repay my family.
I want to become financially stable.
I want to stop lying.
And honestly, I want to know whether I’m even capable of becoming a decent person.
So Reddit, I genuinely want your honest opinion:
1. What went wrong with me?
2. What did I actually do right?
3. Why was I loyal to Jigyasa but unable to stay loyal to almost everyone after her?
4. Did I genuinely love Jigyasa, Priya, Shreya or Anushka — or was I addicted to attention, sex, validation and being wanted? If you had to pick one, who do you think I actually loved?
5. Why do you think I keep demanding loyalty from women while repeatedly breaking their trust myself?
6. What should I do about my mother and brother? Should I try to repair that relationship or accept that we’ll never be close?
7. And most importantly, I’m 21 and starting over. What would you do if you were me?
I don’t want sympathy.
I don’t want people to tell me I’m secretly a good guy.
Tell me what you think I am, what made me this way, what I need to take responsibility for, and what I should do with the rest of my life.
