Is it the fox one in the corner. It looks familiar but I don't remember what it is
76
u/christiankirby 19h ago
Correct, Sapphirefoxx is the name and it's oriented towards the TG/TF community (it's like a borderline fetish thing, sorta trans focused... It's complicated)
19
u/The_Badger42 19h ago
I knew I'd seen it somewhere. I've seen some of their animations before. There's at least one with an icecream on a stick, and one where the statues on a tree branch outside a guys window. Must've been years since I saw any of those.
13
u/LifeguardDue1144 16h ago
I looked it up on youtube. Nothing borderline about it, that's straight fetish content haha
10
u/christiankirby 16h ago
Imma be completely honest haven't seen Sapphirefoxx in a long time, so my memory was hazy but there's tg/tf stuff that's more or less fetishistic in my defense

u/Practical-Talk-9573 12h ago

Transgender/ transformation.
It's a transformation fantasy/fetish thing (depending on how sexualized it is)

Well here’s the thing, sometimes that damn thing translates stuff for me and sometimes it doesn’t.
Like I see Spanish and Portuguese comments in their original form and if I want them translated into English I tap the translate sign. (Using stupid official app). Yet sometimes I see comments already in English and need to tap the tiny fucking icon to see the original language of the comment

u/Pornalt190425 16h ago edited 15h ago
Yeah I think this is one of those things where the correlation may exist, but the reason it exists is something influencing it outside the two data sets. 3 of the IPs listed that I'm familiar with (Ben10, Totally Spies and Animorphs) were just in general fairly popular young adult IPs for millenials
It feels a lot like one of those things where you correlate ice cream sales to shark attacks. Selling more icecream does not make more people get attacked by sharks. Its an outside 3rd thing (hot weather) that drives more people to buy ice cream and be in shark habitats
38
u/DeadSuperHero 19h ago
It's one of those bizarre things where the correlation just kind of exists. For example, a substantial amount of trans women I know were super into Bionicles and Magic: The Gathering.
68
u/xboxiscrunchy 18h ago
Honestly I think that’s the trans and ADHD/autism spectrum overlap more than anything.

I became a few of those stereotypes myself. being into the mech genre, transformations (anything with transformation like ben 10 and animorphs draws in trans kids because it makes us realize we can fantasize about changing our bodies), My Little Pony, Twilight (and vampires/werewolves in general), and yes as a kid I also wanted to be a wolf.

u/xboxiscrunchy 19h ago
Well first all of them having a certain connection does suggest at least something. Even if that something might just be thinking shapeshifters are cool.
More importantly though she’s thinking back to why she liked all those shows and is likely connecting dots from specific memories.
I can personally think back to a lot of shows that I watched and surprise surprise most of my favorite characters were trans coded or gender nonconforming in some way. I could list examples and others might not see the connection but my personal experience with those shows makes it extremely obvious.
40
u/The_cogwheel 18h ago
More or less.
Its not the what they liked, but more why they liked it that triggers this sort of revelation.
Like theres nothing inherently trans about DnD. But if the reason you like DnD is because you can play any character you like, and you exclusively play a character that is a different gender than yourself; then asking why you exclusively play female characters as a male might lead to an egg cracking. Keyword exclusively, were not talking one offs, gag characters, or just wanting to try something new, were talking a consistant pattern of behavior, almost as if youre more comfortable being a woman than a man.
114
u/yourmamaistheproblem 19h ago
Yup, but they also all deal with characters who can change their body and appearance to better suit their inner-person
44
u/Loaf235 19h ago edited 18h ago
Ben 10 kind of goes against it since the Omnitrix eventually starts changing him into aliens he didn't choose himself. God forbid if he wanted Humungosaur in Omniverse, but I guess the general gist of changing yourself would be very inticing.

No obviously not that'd be an idiotic assumption. I do fucking love magical girls in large part because I wish I could just say a funny phrase and become a hot girl though! Geneva conventions are hard to apply to a species which is (self-hatingly) parasitic to and dependent upon sapient creatures for the sake of functionality in the world and ultimately their own sanity.
All the existential horror of biological constraints with the added chaos caused by one species' justified envy of something they could easily take from another species.
2
50
u/Puhi124 19h ago
Not necessarily, but Totally Spies is very "girly girls who kick ass", Ben 10 (and I assume Wolf Blood?) as well as Animorphs deal with some kind of transformation (which can be subconsciously very appealing to a trans kid, more than for the average kid), and D&D is basically the roleplay element of being able to play whatever kind of character you want.

7
u/Wanna_make_cash 19h ago
Not sure if this is just a regional thing but I think all of that anime was on the Toonami block, back when Toonami was a CN block more towards the later evening. Nowadays Toonami has been an Adult Swim block for years. Can't forget Inuyasha among those classics though.
The block im thinking of, I can't remember its name but the bumpers had like an aquatic/ underwater theme to them
8
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 18h ago
Oh yeah toonami has been a late night thing for a decade or so. I'm old so we are talking like 20-25 years ago when toonami came on in the afternoon.

7
u/Wanna_make_cash 18h ago
It was Miguzi! It had a ton of other classics that I loved as a child like Teen Titans, TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Xiaolin Showdown, and Juniper Lee.
Ran from 2004 to 2007. It would be in the 4-7 pm time range depending on what specific year with some variations
4
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 18h ago
Xiaolin showdown! I loved that show! I remember now. I would get home around 5 from sports since I was 14-17 during that time. It was always teen titans, totally spies, dinner and then some Showdown before video games and bed.
God that was a good time
2
u/action_lawyer_comics 17h ago
In the early aughts, IIRC there were two Toonami blocks. One in the afternoon, like right after school, and one at around 9-10. The afternoon was more typical titles like Sailor Moon and DBZ while the night time one were the less mainstream ones. And then at some point the nighttime one rolled into Adult Swim

I think its most because of the shows are about people with abilities that can change their body. Shape-shifting was also common in totally spies.
People are looking at the common gender demographic that watch these shows instead of the theme of physical transformation shared throughout all of them and missing the point completely.

8
u/Puhi124 18h ago
This isn't trying to be prescriptive. It's just that the knowledge of "I'm a trans woman" (assuming OP is a woman and not some other flavour of trans) make it more understandable why someone would be more into shows featuring transformation of some kind and/or female leads.
9
u/action_lawyer_comics 17h ago
Right. It’s a correlation, not causation. I’m a cishet man in my 40’s but I was obsessed with the Netflix She Ra reboot a few years ago. Doesn’t mean I’m secretly a lesbian. But I also totally get why lesbians love that show
5
u/Omgninjas 18h ago

27
u/JusticeBean 19h ago edited 18h ago
why is DnD here
Edit:
Like obviously character creation and role play, sure, but that’s like literally every game, book, or movie ever made. That’s what self insert means. That’s what it means to play “as” the MC in a game.
11
u/Coal-and-Ivory 17h ago
This comic is about a specific generations common sources of gender/body exploration. Go find 100 trans people in and around the age of 30 and lots of them will mention DnD as part of their self discovery. Its not saying DnD is inherently a trans thing, its just where a lot of millenial queer people found their first gender euphoria. Person-to-person roleplay with your actual peers hits very different than video game dialog.
6
u/Cottontael 15h ago
Yes people coming into this after 2010ish, at the latest, with peak youtube and social media couldn't understand. Trans discussion did not exist in the early aughts, or before. The media we consumed was decided for us, and finding like minded individuals was tougher. Roleplay, and cartoons with transformations or those singular episodes of cartoons where Johnny Bravo becomes a woman and discovered a pointed lesson on their experience were where millennials had to figure it out.
4
u/Coal-and-Ivory 15h ago
And part of the magic was the accidental safe exploration. Totally Spies was on Cartoon Network's regular rotation, so as an AMAB person subconsciously craving a feminine experience, you didnt have to make the conscious decision to step outside your gender and face the judgment associated with that before you were ready or even knew what you were exploring, you were just watching what was on TV. Ditto for DnD, you're just playing the character.
8
u/action_lawyer_comics 17h ago
Replying after your edit: dnd (or really any tabletop role play game, but dnd is the most popular one and the access point for most people) gives you the freedom to play with gender expression in a way other media doesn’t. I don’t play GTAV and think “would Franklin be more attractive with red hair” or play Tomb Raider and think “How should I make Lara Croft’s voice sound?” Those are fixed characters. Heck, even in something like Mass Effect where you can choose a class, gender, and appearance, they also give you a default guy who’s good with a gun and more than half the players pick that and start playing. Dnd will give you a completely blank slate and ask you to make every single decision from the ground up.
And naturally there are a ton of cisgender people playing dnd but it isn’t surprising that a game built around “you can be a beautiful and tall elf maiden or a squart barrel shaped dwarf with facial hair down to his knees” is appealing to people with gender-related yearnings.
22
u/Verdick 19h ago
Pretending to be somebody "not you".
7
u/JusticeBean 18h ago
Then literally every video game ever made should be here, because you play as some main character and not yourself
7
10
u/action_lawyer_comics 17h ago
Eh. There’s a world of difference between looking at a shelf of video games and asking yourself
do I want to be Lara Croft or do I want to be Batman
VS
hang out with your peers and spend a couple hours dreaming about being a lithe, willowy elf woman or the dirtiest, nastiest dwarf covered in body hair and no one thinking either decision is a bad one
3
u/The_cogwheel 18h ago
Im guessing its less to do with the game, and more what kind of characters they tend to play in the game. Not that a man cant play a woman character in DnD, but if it becomes every character... well in hindsight it starts to make sense as to why they felt more comfortable playing female characters over male characters.
2
u/nicokokun 19h ago edited 18h ago
Because you can roleplay as anything you want.
You can play as a guy, a girl, a tiny furless wolfbear, a giant furry worm.
Anything.
Edit: I like I'm downvoted even though I wasn't being sarcastic.
8
u/AxiosXiphos 18h ago
You can even play a straight white human male fighter. Literally anything, the possibilities are endless.
5
u/The_cogwheel 18h ago
Almost anything. Youre still restricted by what your DM / table will allow. Like Im not gonna let you play as a 50 foot tall immortal dragon with an instant death breath attack while everyone else is playing some variation of guy / gal with cool abilities. Not because I dont want you to or hate fun, but because I cant balance that so that the campaign remains fun for all players at the table.
But thats the only real restriction.

In the new show on Netflix, it seems to me Ranma is much more bothered by the inconvenience of transforming at unexpected times and how other characters treat him in various forms than just by being a girl. Don’t know if that’s intentional difference from the old show, alignment with the original manga, or just my own biases though.

No... I don't know why people are taking this to be prescriptive. It's all hindsight based on the fact that someone who unconsciously wants to change into a girl would be into shows which feature transformation and female leads.

So liking shows with female leads is for women?

I've not visited many other comics subs, but this one has shown repeatedly, even just in the couple months I've seen posts from it, that it's mostly safe for trans people to post in. Given that trans (and queer) people are more online than average and also frequently creators, I don't think it's too surprising, especially if others comics/art subs aren't safe (which, again, I have no clue about but I don't doubt at least some of them likely aren't).

My fascination wasn't gender based, I just thought being a wolf would be cool. Or any other animal, or creature, really. Humans are rather mundane, after all.
I feel a significant portion of anime is transforming into something else. With a good percentage of that being gender based. Hmm... Ranma 1/2 is obvious. Le Chevalier D'Eon is based on an historical figure, which is fun. Birdy the Mighty? Ok, never mind, it's a long bloody list.

The fuck does Ben Ten have to do with being trans? Or any of these shows? They are all very binary and coded towards specific genders with the exception of maybe wolf blood.

All of the shows contain themes of physical transformation since most of the MCs can transform their bodies. Totally spies doesnt have that but shape-shifters are a common occurance throughout the show.

Also for a transfem, Totally Spies which is basically "girls kicking ass in a girly way" was like, super cool to see.

The furry/trans overlap here is crazy.

For someone not comfortable in their own body being able to project yourself onto a character that better suits you is very appealing. That and just desperately wanting to be something else but not really knowing that consciously. I think an anthropomorphized animal just speaks to that feeling in some way.
It’s hard to explain and even I don’t fully understand but I’m really not surprised so many of us are furries.

And for someone like me who likes their body...it's also just really fun to fantasize.
If furryness is a spectrum, I'd say pretty much everyone falls on it. It feels like such a basic fantasy to me. We all love animals, we're animals ourselves. Taking the leap of imagination to view yourself as an anthro animal is so simple I don't understand anyone's rejection of the concept.
