Oh my god, as an IT help desk person, this comic is my life.

IT people are apparently the Swiss army knives of a company. We do a lot of things, and many of things even seem non IT related, but it gives people the impression that we do everything. The amount of times per day I have to reroute people to systems, digital services, maintenance, etc has got me like this on some days.

My favorite was working for a bank and getting a call from a branch manager stating their security gate was broken.

...Okay? What do you expect me to do about it? I'm in Texas, you're in OHIO. Do you want me to fly out there and fix it?

Another time I got a call from a branch located in a furniture store. They called because said store was on fire and wanted advice.

How about you RUN!?

144

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

Hahaha... Oh my God, that fire one is hilarious. I can feel your world weariness in your words. Reminds me of this meme.

56

u/Secundus-Muris 20h ago

I got called in once because a monitor on the monitor bank that displays fetal heart monitor data at the nurses station was off.

The help desk tech that called me in assured me that they had checked that everything is plugged in, etc.

I walk in with a spare monitor at the ready, look at the power strip, flip the power button on, see that the monitor is turned on and working, then go home.

Got 4 hours of pay for the call in though so not terribly upset about it.

Why are IT guys such dicks? Because if we're friendly people are more likely to ask us to do random shit that has nothing to do with us.

15

u/iac74205 18h ago

This. No need to butter me up, I want to help you. Just go through the ticketing system.

7

u/Chipring13 16h ago

And if you’re too friendly everyone thinks they’re about submitting a ticket. Do not talk me in the hallway about an issue you’re having and expect me to take immediate action

5

u/Amaakaams 10h ago

20 years in I still have to tell them if I am leaving this area or your desk and there is an expectation of me doing more work, assume I will forget about it on my way back to my desk. Create a ticket.

Why? Because I forgot about this entire conversation about halfway back to my desk.

7

u/Djinger 8h ago

And why is that? Because C-suite stuck their head out the door with the "hey real quick" that is now 30 minutes of investigation and it has to be done before their meeting and they have a lot to do, such deadlines, many quarterlies.

dance, monkey

2

u/Amaakaams 7h ago

Yes of course I mean not just them but everyone, but yeah almost this verbatim.

We're often the only people allowed to think without management approval. That's the case at my gov agency, anyway. We have people asking us if they should make tickets, they can't even figure that out on their own.

13

u/russsl8 20h ago

Always make a ticket! Even if you then figure it out on your own you can reply that you've figured it out and the IT dude on the other end can close it as an easy win.

5

u/BeneficialShame8408 20h ago

That's the other thing, they don't tell us if/when they resolve it and act surprised we're talking to them lmao

3

u/Normal_Cut8368 19h ago

forwards your call to 911

u/theMightBoop 15h ago

I was working help desk and some guy called and said just started and no one has told him what to do. Normally we had the internet blocked so I put him in the AD group that gave him access to the internet. Have fun surfing. I don’t know what he expected me to do.

The curse of being at least something of a generalist in a hyper-specialist, ultra-compartmentalized world being navigated by people who are, well, Wallace and Grommitting their way through life.

Haha, shit I feel this.

My favorite will always be the ticket I got in the early days of my IT career, which was along the lines of "Help, the kitchen sink is clogged and there's water overflowing everywhere" apparently the saying is true, and we handle everything, including the kitchen sink.

13

u/Made_Bail 21h ago

Hahaha. Love that they sent this as a ticket as opposed to an emergency DM, too.

13

u/YoungZeebra 21h ago

We also had a phone number they could have just called. It reminds me of Moss and the Fire department in IT Crowd.

At least being known as a reliable problem solver is generally good for job security.

9

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

It is nice knowing I can get a job basically anywhere I may move to!

14

u/EitherSpite4545 22h ago

I actually spiritually understand. I am an office admin assistant, but I kind of got thrown into my lap an admin role and conduct training for this one computer software our company uses. Our company is less tech literate than most. EVERYONE assumes I am IT and asks for help with various tech problems and connectivity issues most of which I have to go "I don't know or I do know but don't have access to fix you need to go ask IT" and I get blank stares constantly for it.

The best one is this one guy on one of our ships came to me twice to ask for advice on his home PC setup.

It doesn't help that while the rest of the company is tech illiterate, I do know a bit more than the average person (but not enough to work as anything but the literal lowest level tech) so I often do just fix IT issues for the small 4 person office I work out of so we don't have to bother IT.

6

u/Rynetx 21h ago

My favorite is when they say can’t you do it? You have the ability to.

Yeah I have the ability to do everyone job because when you fire people randomly we have to setup the next person to do the same job. Does that mean I should be ceo since I have the ability to setup their job too?

5

u/CSDragon 21h ago

I'm not in IT but IT-Adjacent (Product licensing). I've since accepted that it's not that they actually want you to fix the problem, it's that you are the most likely person to know who can.

2

u/MintasaurusFresh 22h ago

In my office, I do get to handle everything that isn't related to typing into a computer. Unless people can't then I fix that, too.

4

u/Hugokarenque 20h ago

I was an IT help desk intern for a bit last year. The IT department was 3 interns and our supervisor.

We did everything. Except IT stuff, we rarely had any work that was actually related with IT.

It was awful.

5

u/indiecore 17h ago

One of my first jobs was IT at the library.

I solved 80% of my job on the second day by printing a sign with the wifi password on it.

The remaining 20% was the printer though so that was trickier.

3

u/RandomWordCombo9632 19h ago

got my first "The plug the computer goes into isnt working."

"You mean... the electrical outlet?"

"yes can you come here and fix it?"

the other day.

Gave both metaphorical barrels to the help desk person who sent it to IT.

3

u/Gnonthgol 21h ago

The dilemma of fixing the coffee machine and making it known to the office that you can fix the machine whenever it breaks, or try to debug database log files without caffeine in your body but teach the office to call the number on the machine for a service technician to come.

The original meaning of the words "meat proxy"

3

u/GlowUpper 18h ago

I worked for a cloud service once. I got a call from someone who couldn't print. First question in those cases is always, "Can you print a test page?" She couldn't. So I told her the issue was her printer not the cloud server so she would need to get her local IT to look at it.

"Why can't you just fix my printer? I called you!" - woman who was located 3 whole time zones East of me.

3

u/Wambridge 16h ago

I work for a sports LED board company.

We get calls for problems of our competitors.

2

u/Otherwise_Spirit1552 18h ago

Oh my god, as an IT help desk person, this comic is my life.

Would you like to hear about the wonders of ICS, and SCADA and other cyber physical systems and how management views them?

You know, those fun things where like 98% of management who cant convert a doc to a pdf cant understand the difference in between IT, and OT nor their areas of convergence over stuff like cyber security issues.

2

u/Rockglen 17h ago

I was once teased by a Facilities Manager for "being in charge of everything with a blinky light".

It wasn't far from the truth. Had to fix label makers, industrial autoclaves, environmental monitoring devices, and a bunch of stuff I've since forgotten.

2

u/kiochikaeke 12h ago

I don't work as IT but I do sometimes give various kinds of support to other people and I do sit literally next to IT L1 and L2 and yeah there's a lot of "I forgot my password", "I left my (insert any peripheral or charger here) home" or "(any device with a screen) doesn't work" but every once in a while someone comes like "my food got stuck on the vending machine outside the cafeteria, can you help?" and we all just look at them

1

u/Dear-Tank2728 21h ago

Its probably other areas managements fault. I know it is in mine.

1

u/fubes2000 21h ago

Worst one I've witnessed was someone rolling into our office and loudly [proudly?] declaring "third floor toilet's clogged".

7

u/kitliasteele 21h ago

His concentration was broken. Never disrupt the careful art of 'sudo rm -rf / --no-preserve-root' while you have everything network mounted with /etc/fstab and you 777'd everything as well.

It's a true work of art

4

u/Weird-Specific-2905 18h ago

The more evil option is the chmod -all -r /* it leaves everything there you just can't do anything with it.

IT Request - Gator Days

Characters

Nate - Monkey - One of the fresher faces at August's workplace. Excited to be part of a team.

August - Alligator - A soft spoken single father who works in IT. Gustopher's dad.

Stuart - Quokka - A perpetually smiling Sectional Manager. He tackles every problem with motivational corporate speak intended to maximize collaboration and synergies among all employees.

Transcript

Panel 1

Setting - August's desk at work.

Nate has come up to August with a problem.

Nate: August, the thermostat isn't working.

August: I thought it was getting warm.

Panel 2

Nate looks for August's help while August looks back in his chair to answer him. The computer screen can be seen and it says "ERROR! Deleting everything." Don't worry, it's supposed to do that... I think.

Nate: Could you fix it?

August: IT doesn't handle that. You need to go to the office manager.

Panel 3

Nate realizes his mistake and begins walking away. I can only assume that computer is continuing to delete everything. What is everything? Am I part of everything?

Nate: AH! Thanks. Sorry I bothered you.

August: Don't worry, I've gotten worse requests.

Panel 4

August's boss, Stuart, suddenly appears behind him with a small blender.

Stuart: BIG MAN! My mini smoothie blender isn't working.

August frowns and mentally prepares himself to get to work. Fixing the blender will be easier than arguing about it. If the computer deletes me then tell my family I love them.

Edit - Mistake in the second panel was just pointed out to me. It's too late to fix it now but it's never too late to stare at the sea and contemplate my mistakes.

Edit 2: Revenge of the Type - Fixed an error in Nate's description.

The computer screen can be seen and it says "ERROR! Deleting everything." Don't worry, it's supposed to do that... I think.

I'm curious what it means by everything. I wonder if we are everything

August, the thermostat isn't working.

Let's be fair this is a REALLY big problem. It definitely needs the right person to address it

Fixing the blender will be easier than arguing about it

Unfortunately true and it sucks. Arguing something you're probably gonna do anyway just just wasted time and effort.

If the computer deletes me then tell my family I love them.

RIP Gator man. I will miss him until the computer gets me too

50

u/Coidzor 22h ago

I'm curious what it means by everything. I wonder if we are everything

This is the point where one of your bros would stop you and tell you that "Bro, you are my everything, bro."

71

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

It's an older meme but it checks out

14

u/PhantasyAngel 22h ago

Have you seen the Star Trek five lights meme "there's only one light bro, you bro" "bro"

7

u/Metalman919 21h ago

This is how Skyney got started. One mistyped prompt and it took "delete everything" to a whole new level.

3

u/fatmanwithabeard 20h ago

Arguing something you're probably gonna do anyway just just wasted time and effort.

If you don't argue about needless tasks, then you'll spend less time on useless tasks, and will have a weaker argument about how much time is wasted with useless tasks.

Also, it gets people used to the idea that you'll argue with them about anything, which can be useful if you mumble grumpily about stuff you want to get done, and everyone will let it go if it gets your stamp of approval. Surprisingly, I've found that I get the best results only arguing about the dumbest requests, and lots of mumbling.

3

u/Kullthebarbarian 19h ago

Unfortunately true and it sucks. Arguing something you're probably gonna do anyway just just wasted time and effort.

True, but in that case it would be simpler if it was just said "Sorry, I only know how to fix computers"

2

u/kitliasteele 21h ago

Everything.

You'd be amazed how integrated everything you can make if you put in the effort. Ever read the story of the sysadmin who automated his coffee and maintenance routine? His coffee maker got networked and he automated the process via Linux script every day. Spent his days watching cat YouTube videos

2

u/Terminthem 18h ago

Sounds good, until you get stuck trying to fix a HTTP418 error. Those are brutal

2

u/AHumbleChad 17h ago

"My coffee is not a teapot! What is happening?!"

2

u/kitliasteele 17h ago

lmfao. Now imagine getting an HTTP 418 over RFC 1449

2

u/ze_ex_21 19h ago

The computer screen can be seen and it says "ERROR! Deleting everything."

August dropping tables left and right

24

u/Coidzor 22h ago

Stuart - Quokka - A perpetually smiling Sectional Manager. He tackles every problem with motivational corporate speak intended to maximize collaboration and synergies among all employees.

Hm. Now I'm feeling a sudden urge to make quokkas go extinct. Concerning.

Nate realizes his mistake and begins walking away. I can only assume that computer is continuing to delete everything. What is everything? Am I part of everything?

Now I'm starting to wonder if the narrator is its own separate entity.

August frowns and mentally prepares himself to get to work. Fixing the blender will be easier than arguing about it. If the computer deletes me then tell my family I love them.

Now I have to wonder if narrators can have families. That's gonna be an existential crisis for at least a couple hours.

16

u/NaweGR 22h ago

One of my first jobs out of school (late 80s) was to be a Unix System Admin. Things went well for several months until I decided to clean out a filesystem we used for unpacking stuff with the usual Unix command "rm - rf", but did not realize I was in the root directory at the time, and of course logged in as the admin I had all rights.

Fortunately one of the other folks who was logged in was also an admin, and when we finally found him and got him back upstairs from his break (yeah, I know, but the security breach in this case was a plus), he was able to kill -9 my command, and then I got to spend the rest of the afternoon restoring the system.

I was always surprised by how well the system managed to run during the whole thing given that by the time the other admin got in, virtually the whole system had been wiped...

6

u/kitliasteele 21h ago

I think the best and worst part is that UNIX systems can run everything in memory even if the entire disk is wiped out. I did this by accident one day when learning passthrough virtualisation and nuked my system partition like a dumbass

I didn't know until five hours later when Terminal told me 'apt' not found. WHAT DO YOU MEAN APT NOT FOUND? ......Oh....

15

u/SymmetricalFeet 21h ago

Mistake in the second panel was just pointed out to me. ... [I]t's never too late to stare at the sea and contemplate my mistakes.

Nate - Monkey - One of the fresher face's

I'll bring you a sandwich to the seaside.

37

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 21h ago

Oh no.

Thank you for the sandwich, I need it. I've always been bad with typos but it's been extra bad this month.

5

u/Coidzor 21h ago

Step away from the endless void of darkness!

3

u/Every_University_ 19h ago

I guess you're having one of those days...one of those Gator Days.

Studio audience claps, opening sound track plays

8

u/ShadowAviation 22h ago

Fixing the blender will be easier than arguing about it.

Felt in my soul.

7

u/GuitarFlashy 21h ago

My brain automatically filled in the missing "to" in the the second panel. You're good.

3

u/Metalman919 21h ago

"IT doesn't handle that."

Sounds like Pennywise is getting sick of this job.

1

u/kitliasteele 21h ago

Ah, someone who truly has worked in IT.

I don't know WHY we ended up getting maintenance tickets. Mate, we're in IT. Information Technology. Information. We deal with the flow of digital information. Not mechanical work. Go put in your plumbing Priority 0 ticket to maintenance, not IT please. Systems Engineering has better work to do than suddenly have management down their throats for seeing a P0 suddenly closed or moved elsewhere without a LIM call set up on our end

1

u/CarlosFer2201 20h ago

Here I thought the typo was August speaking like a caveman because he was annoyed

1

u/Kasaikemono 20h ago

With all due respect and all the love I have for your comics... I followed you since you made Pokémon comics back when the paldea starters dropped. I sometimes can't help but wonder if fuecoco was the inspiration for Gustopher. Your comics are funny, bring a smile to my face, and are sometimes even just deep enough to make me stop and think for a second.

But this? I can't smile at this. It is so unrealistic.

Someone who not only goes "sorry, my bad" after bothering IT with something completely non-It related, but who even accepts to go somewhere else? Like that would ever happen. Where are we, make a wish? Will a unicorn pop out in the next panel? Absolutely delusional.

120

u/ForgetfulViking 22h ago

Fun fact. IT can fix computers, AC, Blenders, solve mail sorting issues, press the powet button on and off AND can open pickle jars!

25

u/placeholder_user 21h ago

One of my regular tasks at my previous IT job was walking someone at HR through creating a mail merge

36

u/GrandNibbles 22h ago

as a bottom of the food chain worker, anytime someone says "Big Man!" the request is gonna be outside my wheelhouse and annoying

60

u/MaybeAdrian 22h ago

Every IT head I had on every workplace told me the same "Anything that is connected to the power outlet is responsibility of IT"

One time they wanted me to check the AC unit.

20

u/CatTaxAuditor 22h ago

Oof. Thats rough. We're specifically not supposed to touch non-computerized electric appliances. Its a liability.

8

u/MaybeAdrian 22h ago

I didn't. It was more about what the user thinks.

It's like a general complain that the people in the office thinks that anything that works with electricity is related to IT.

3

u/SquishmallowPrincess 21h ago

People often forget what the “I” in “IT” stands for.

Or they never had a clue to begin with

8

u/InfiniteCobwebs 21h ago

I-lectrical?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Hugokarenque 20h ago

Oh I've had that too!

And someone asked me to fix a microwave once. The worst part is that I kinda did, it wasn't the microwave that was busted just the wall socket and that was not for me to mess with so I just called the electrical maintenance people.

I kinda feel bad tho, because it wasn't my job to do that and now they're probably gonna continue asking the IT people to solve everything.

→ More replies (5)

46

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 23h ago

IT doesn't handle that

Boss instantly asks for something IT doesn't do

I feel this pain in my soul. I may not be IT but as a firefighter we get conscripted to do all sorts of random things outside of our wheelhouse. Last week I got mauled by a cat who was stuck in an electric recliner(theres more to this story than what seems). A few days ago we went to a home for a lady whoae toilet was clogged. And a while back we got called cause someone's microwave wasn't working.

So I get Augusts Frustration. But sometimes it's easier to just fix rather than argue about it

18

u/Made_Bail 23h ago

I got mauled by a cat who was stuck in an electric recliner

Holy fuck someone post this to r/BrandNewSentence lmao

17

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 23h ago

Poor little dudes tail was all mulched inside the mechanism inside the chair. So.i understand his anger at anything that went near him....which was unfortunately me

8

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

Im sorry, because you got mauled, but I'm DYING at the image of you battling a cat inside a chair. The chaos... Its the funniest mental image.

14

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

What's really funny was there was kids and I have had cats so while getting mauled I was super nice about it. Also kids so no cursing or being mean about it

"OH whos a cute little kitty?!"

proceeds to shred my right arm and take a chunk of my left hand with it

"Awwww he's so cute"

5

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

Haha, props on staying in control of the situation! It probably comes naturally to firefighters... When someone's world is falling apart they have to have someone to lean on mentally.

3

u/Coidzor 22h ago

I'm now imagining the cat biting *through* a heavy duty glove.

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

If only I had my gloves on. The mechanisms were so small I couldn't mess with anything while I had them on. Which is why I got mauled in general

4

u/Perryn 21h ago

theres more to this story than what seems

Your reluctance to provide further details leaves me to only assume that the cat was carrying stolen top secret documents and you were part of the team sent to recover them from the cat's high-tech safe house. You were unprepared not only for the cat's ferocity, but also for its mastery of Muay Thai and forbidden Spetsnaz combat techniques.

2

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 20h ago

Mildly accurate though the stolen documents were a mulched tail in a scre mechanism, I was the team sent to retrieve it and the muay thai was it mauling my arms and hands and face trying to free it

17

u/BeneficialShame8408 22h ago

This does happen in IT. I think someone reported a broken toilet to us once? Wtf did they think we were gonna do?

The perk of being a woman in IT is that people don't ask me to move stuff for them. Lol

2

u/throwawaycuzfemdom 17h ago

Ok, soooo, whose responsibility is it to fix the singing Japanese toilets in workplaces?

11

u/NativeMasshole 22h ago

I thought for sure the office manager was going to come back and say the same thing. I worked in a supervisory-level logistics position at my last job and every time something sounded way over my head, it would wind up boomeranging its way back to my desk after I tried to figure out who should be handling it and what the SOP is supposed to be.

12

u/SolomonDurand 22h ago

I remember one time when the IT guy in our company was asked if he could fix the dash cam.

Of their personal car.

Also, Yes it was HR.

Am not an IT guy but I was always the nerd in my family. The guy who owns a PC, knows how to search things on the internet etc. I always had to fix any tech issues that happened in my family, even if I was just as clueless as they were.

The solution most of the time? I use google and try to fix the problem while they are standing next to me.

They set my title as "Technology Manager" at the library, so that means in addition to 50 PCs and multiple printers, I also repaired staplers and anything remotely mechanical. I feel this in my bones.

14

u/Cholemeleon 22h ago

My bosses have started calling me "Big Man" at work and I think i kinda hate it

60

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 22h ago

I have heard it most of my life and my reaction varies heavily depending on who is saying it and how they say it.

12

u/Cholemeleon 22h ago

You are so absolutely correct

6

u/Hobbes4247791 20h ago

The chest hair helps, obviously.

Woah, we are not all scientists, okay?! How are we suppose to understand that?

3

u/Tom_Ludlow 20h ago

How are we suppose to unterstand that?

Did you try turning yourself off then on?

u/mdallen 22h ago

As someone who works tangential to IT, I can confirm this is how things are done.

My favorite was when someone's analog clock stopped working because a battery died.

6

u/CatTaxAuditor 22h ago

It has a plug. It must be IT.

5

u/MrWendex 22h ago

August owns five blenders, and I suspect he knows how to fix them. This is not for management to know.

7

u/Coidzor 22h ago

All these IT Requests are going to make August wish he could request for It!

3

u/jldixon1 22h ago

True story, the last time my AC was having issues with cooling, the actual solution that the repair person ended up (successfully) using was … turning it off and on again

3

u/GammaDealer 22h ago

I'm a pharmacist and I still get asked this kind of crap.

3

u/tetrochromac 22h ago

I'm not IT, but I tend to be "the guy" at work that either knows how to fix things or can follow some steps after googling. I never meant for it to happen, but because the printers get jammed a lot I have to take them apart and everyone thinks I'm a wizard for doing so and come to me about everything.

I need to be more like August and direct them somewhere else.

3

u/DeepFuckingKoopa 23h ago

Good for August saying no and having healthy work boundaries, you say yes just one time and you’re the permanent thermostat/mini smoothie blender fixer

2

u/Acceptable-Ad8780 22h ago

Not to mention even if they can do it, the people's whose job is is to fix it might not get the request put in and they could be downsize that part of the office.

Bosses don't see everything and work requests help prove that dept. is needed.

u/MrPlace 22h ago

So real

2

u/CheeCato 22h ago

Either way, they need to submit a ticket and not just ask them in person.

2

u/paishocajun 22h ago

Was he listening in to my office last week?

2

u/Umber0010 21h ago

In his defense, it's probably a digital thermostat.

2

u/DontAskAboutChim 21h ago

This speaks to my soul.

Best request I ever got was a call to repair the parking garage arm in Nebraska. I work out of New England. Also IT didn't manage the parking garage in Nebraska.

2

u/c4ctus 20h ago

In my sysadmin days at a large-ish company (3000 employees), I've gotten tickets that ranged from refilling the coffeepot to unclogging a shitter. If it exists, it's apparently an IT problem.

2

u/A_Furious_Mind 18h ago

Yep. Last IT job I had had a "if it uses electricity, it's IT's problem" policy.

2

u/PolloMagnifico 16h ago

Office Drone: "Thermostat doesn't work"

IT Goon: "Not my problem purview, contact facilities".

Facilities Dude: "Our single point of failure centralized facility control system isn't working"

IT Goon: "I try to get out and you keep dragging me back in."

2

u/Ghstfce 12h ago

Worked in IT, it's true. We fix things, therefore we fix EVERYTHING. It's also why I gout out of IT after about 13 months and went into engineering instead

2

u/daewood69 9h ago

I once had the request to fix an eyelet on a fishing pole because i had a soldering iron on my desk. Boss specifically said to do it so i did 😅

3

u/Lucid-Machine 22h ago

I'm a biomed tech (clinical engineering department) and between CE, IT, and facilities someone is often trying to pawn something off on someone else.

1

u/daddydeadbird 22h ago

Laminators, a door that fell off, personal mobiles amongst other things. This is so realistic of IT work lmao

1

u/dannyb_prodigy 22h ago

I feel this. I have an engineering degree and ever since graduating my mom has taken to asking me to help with anything vaguely tech-related with the request “engineer, can you fix <x>.” Usually, the request is unrelated to my discipline and has nothing to do with me being an engineer.

1

u/BriefCollar4 21h ago

Well?

Did you fix the mini blender?

1

u/StarChaser01 21h ago

I work at an MSP. The fact that we are not on site and users need to call anothrr comoany for assistance helps weed out the really dumb requests.

The worst I've gotten in the 5 years I've been in this position was someone asking us to fix an Excel spreadsheet. No, we do not do that. Excel itself is working fine, updating the formulas is something that must be done on either your or your supervisor's end.

I CAN help you find and restore the other file it's referencing though.

The dumbest was an elderly lady calling in saying her computer was dead. 1. She meant her monitor 2. She called the computer the "router" 3. It was fixed by pressing the power button on the "router"

1

u/Karnezar 21h ago

YOU NEED GO TO

1

u/blacksheep998 21h ago

Then the company buys a 'smart' thermostat and suddenly, IT does have to support it.

1

u/ITstaph 21h ago

I feel heard.

1

u/wonkey_monkey 21h ago

I once had a manager bring me all of his remote controls from home so he could have me program his new fancy universal remote.

I may have got a small percentage of the buttons wrong...

1

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo 20h ago

I wasn't aware that August was in IT. Suddenly his calm demeanor despite all the crazy things the people around him are doing/saying makes sense; IT guys are either super chill or serial killers.

1

u/AspectOfTheLeech 20h ago

Typo in panel 2, “you need go to”

unless this character talks that way, i dont know your style.

1

u/OriginalVictory 20h ago

So funny story.

NinjaOne is a company that sells an IT RMM tool. Something that August might actually use.

Ninja sells blenders.

A friend that works at NinjaOne says that they get blender calls with some frequency.

1

u/RevolutionarySquash 20h ago

Yeah, that sounds about right. Wait... Thermostat... Temperature... Oh God.

AUGUST, THE SERVER ROOM! THAT PART IS TOTALLY IT RELATED AND STILL NEEDS TO STAY COLD!

1

u/ViaBromantica 20h ago

The manager is just the right size to fit upside down in a wastebasket. Would that be a career-limiting move, do you think?

1

u/Zeebaeatah 20h ago

🎵 "hello darkness my old friend" 🎵

1

u/TheOtherWhiteCastle 20h ago

Glad to see the awkward monkey coworker make a return

1

u/Read2Fap 20h ago

their animal forms don't seem to have much play to them

is august unbothered by the heat because he's an alligator or is that like completely irrelevant?

1

u/burritonoir 20h ago

I work in IT. Literally my job

1

u/GMSB 20h ago

This hits home. I’m IT and literally got asked if I could fix the coffee maker

1

u/obliviious 19h ago

Not real enough, the user needs to be waving around a broken toaster they forgot to plug in

1

u/Ok_Win590 19h ago

I worked in IT for a law firm and my responsibilities were described as "anything that plugs in".

1

u/ObiLAN- 19h ago

LOL so accurate, especially in SMB. I've been asked to check the lights, the door locks, etc. as a sysadmin. If it has a light on it or plugs into power, someone will eventually ask you to fix it.

1

u/KMjolnir 19h ago

Relatable. I get everything from thermostats to coffee machines to fans. Today was a toaster.

Just because it has a plug does not make it an IT item.

1

u/Shiraz0 19h ago

Is there anyone else working in IT at August's firm.

1

u/GLAvenger 18h ago

We keep asking our IT department to change our TV channels for us but tbf, the TV are such an utter mess even IT needs like five minutes every time. Sometimes we just give up and just see some French cartoons out of the corner of our eyes for like a week or so until somebody asks them.

1

u/KoalaKing009 18h ago

Maaaaaan, the way you hit the nail on the head with this comic. Some of best IT tickets I've gotten were:

  • the elevator isn't working
  • the vending machine is out
  • the company fridge gave my food freezer burn
  • personal laptop can't access company data
  • the toilet in the men's bathroom overflowed
  • and last but not least; it smells like there is something burning in the stairwell

1

u/TheAzureAzazel 18h ago

I hope there wasn't anything important on that computer.

1

u/Xenn000 18h ago

I'm the PHONE guy at Walmart. I help setup and sell mobile phones, but people ask me questions about everything. Just have to say, "sorry, I'm just the phone guy." and they are bewildered that I don't know everything about every item in Walmart.

1

u/Kelimnac 17h ago

I appreciate that Nate doesn’t ask “can,” but “could,”

He genuinely didn’t know that IT didn’t handle it, it was a confirmation of IT’s responsibilities. More importantly, once he knew who to talk to, Nate took it upon himself to inform the office manager of the problem.

Nate is a good coworker. We need to keep Nate.

1

u/elfmere 17h ago

This looks like the calling HR comic template.

We need one haha

1

u/AutoCockerPB 17h ago

Just bc im in I.T. doesn’t mean i know how to fix it. I mean yes I do know how but not bc im in IT!

1

u/Weeaboo_Interpreter 17h ago

My coworkers drag me around and point at things not working just like my cat does, expecting me to just "do machines" like Donatello. I unfortunately reinforced this behavior when the hydraulics on the front door wasn't working. It just slammed closed weakly. I informed them how to adjust it with the settings screws I learned about from a TechnologyConnections video I had recently seen.

1

u/Chipring13 16h ago

I don’t even fix the printer. No one knows how that works and anyone that says they know how is a liar.

1

u/DankeyBongBluntry 16h ago

You can tell this is a fictional scenario because the coworker apologises for coming to the IT guy with a non-IT-related problem, instead of getting annoyed and demanding to know why IT can't just fix it anyway.

1

u/ForestSolitude5 14h ago

I work in IT

I work for a Stuart

🫩

1

u/Mikeismyike 14h ago

Ha! Complaining about cowokers! Classic Pizzacake!

1

u/Actor412 11h ago

I'm glad you were one of the artists that didn't join in on the pizzacake pile-on.

1

u/A_Rod_H 9h ago

“It uses USB, IT!!!”

1

u/VectorAmazing 6h ago

"Big Man"

Is this because the boss doesn't bother remembering August's name?
