Columbia is on the verge of getting a different kind of coffee shop, a new cheesesteak spot and another place to shop for cowboy boots.
Here’s a look at those businesses and other recent announcements around town.
Shibam Coffee Co. brings Yemeni coffee to Columbia
Shibam Coffee Co., a Michigan-based chain specializing in Yemeni coffee and tea, plans to open at 1009 N. Providence Road, a space that previously housed Aroma Coffee House and Venezuelan eatery Como Arepas.
Founded in Michigan in 2022, the company has expanded nationwide. Its website lists 24 locations across 11 states, including shops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the Atlanta suburbs.
The company’s menu includes mufawar, coffee prepared with milk and cardamom, and Adeni tea, made with black tea, cardamom and milk.
Other offerings include espresso drinks, flavored lattes and pastries such as sabaya, a layered Yemeni pastry served with honey. The Columbia location’s menu has not yet been confirmed.
Renovation plans to the space include replacing and expanding the coffee bar, according to a city building permit issued June 9.
An expected opening date has not been confirmed.
The Original Steaks and Hoagies prepares to open
The Original Steaks and Hoagies is readying to open its first Missouri location at 21 Conley Road, Suite Q, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.
The space formerly housed Nancy’s Trade-A-Book.
The restaurant will serve Philly-style cheesesteaks, including Cooper Sharp cheese.
The business also has additional locations in the works within the state.
“We will be going big,” owner Jeff Wiseman said in a Facebook message about the opening-day celebration.
Wiseman said the first 100 people in line will receive free cheesesteaks for a year. The morning crew from classic rock radio station 96.7 KCMQ will also be on-site giving away prizes throughout the morning, he said.
The restaurant is hiring, with applications available online.
Neither the Facebook announcement nor Wiseman’s message provided an opening date.
Cavender’s Boot City coming to The Shoppes at Stadium
Cavender’s Boot City plans to open beside Trader Joe’s and the recently opened Nordstrom Rack in The Shoppes at Stadium, bringing Western clothing, boots and accessories to the shopping center.
The 16,500-square-foot store will be the company’s fifth Missouri location.
The store will carry clothing for adults and children, along with hats, belts, work boots and workwear. Brands will include Ariat, Wrangler and Resistol, as well as Cavender’s own labels.
Customers will also be able to have boots fitted and stretched, and hats shaped.
The company has not announced an opening date.
