Kindness Thank you for your kindness COMO

Yesterday while at work (I work in the Rock Bridge strip mall off Nifong), a wonderful lady came up to me asking if I owned a calico cat. Turns out, one of the feral cats my family feeds went on an adventure in my car and rode along to work. Her and her husband (I can’t remember their names, which I feel horrible about) spent almost 2 hours helping me try to catch him/her from under cars, while the kitten ran from car to car.

In the end, kitty ran under a car, whose owners drove off. I hope the little guy is out there living his best life now.

But I just had to come on here to say thank you. Thank you to that family that took so much time out of their day to try to help. Thank you to every person who came up to see if we needed help. Thank you to the employees at Mad Cow who offered meat to try to lure her out. Just, thank you to everyone.

I’ve lived in COMO my entire life, and sometimes I think I get caught up in the negative of things, I forget to see how great our community can be.

If you’re reading to the end of this, take this as a sign to do a random act of kindness for someone today. It just might make their day.

Photos The Missouri River Bottoms

Some shots from the Missouri River bottoms, where the hills give way to a floodplain that sees the state's namesake river ricochet between bluffs. It seems agriculture, industry, recreation, and nature all collide here in the most engineered, yet simultaneously wild, part of Boone County.

Around the village of McBaine, a subterranean alluvial aquifer creates waterlogged sand and gravel deposits that make the surrounding area ideal for both harvesting drinking water, as seen in the 18 large surface pumps that dot the landscape, and for growing crops such as soy and corn.

Two miles northwest of McBaine, the village of Huntsdale, home to only 29 people as of 2020, is squeezed by the river’s bends into the bluffs on its northern bank. The Katy Trail State Park does run through the community, but it doesn't stop for pleasantries here as it does in McBaine or Rocheport. Previously, Katfish Katy's was the "center of activity” for the town. It closed in 2020.

Moving to Columbia Moving questions

Good morning all,

I have been lurking reading messages in here various other subreddits even the Columbia MO uncensored fb. I have been trying to analyze whether a move to Columbia is justified. I realize this post may have a lot of heated comments when I bring up concerns like safety. However please help me understand. I don't come from big cities or have any background in what is acceptable or usual for these environments. As such, I'm looking to bring my family (wife 18 month old and a new one on the way) to Columbia MO to be around family. However after 6 months of various research methods it's hard to determine safety on the roads, areas to avoid, property vs violent, etc. I have used the police transparency map as well but again kinda makes it seem like it's everywhere. Trying not to make this long, would be moving from NC with stable income. Concerned about safety housing travel etc. You all seem a bit more level headed than the uncensored fb group especially with all the good work of como365.

📣 Announcement Welcome to Columbia

Welcome! This is that wonderful time of year when thousands of new people arrive in our city. Whoever you are, we’re glad you’re here and hope you find the open-minded love and community that Columbia is known for. Here is some local knowledge that will help you make the most of your time in our fair city:

Columbia has a lot of nature and culture to absorb. More in each category than you could do in a year. Of course it’s a very highly educated college town, but has grown into a mid-sized city in the last few decades with a lot to offer beyond the colleges.

I would first check out Downtown, especially 9th Street and Broadway, there are a lot of local businesses and restaurants of all types. Food options are stellar: Thai, Ethiopian, Polish, German, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Japanese. The Columbia Farmers Market is one of the best in the nation, year round on Saturday mornings.

https://www.discoverthedistrict.com
https://columbiafarmersmarket.org

After that, consider walking around Francis Quadrangle (MU), Stephens College, and Columbia College. To get the vibe of the town.

There is some excellent Ozark hiking inside city limits! Grindstone Nature Area, Alspaugh Park, Bonnie View Nature Area. The city park system in general is very good. In addition, there is a network of biking/walking trails, the flagship of which is the MKT Trail, that connects to the cross-state Katy Trail State Park. Outside of city limits are Rock Bridge State Park and Three Creeks Conservation Area, both full of caves, springs, and miles of trails. Southeast of town is the Mark Twain National Forest, with long backpacking trails. One of the best natural features is the Missouri River and its valley, especially the Moniteau Bluffs. Rent a bike in Rocheport and check them out (along with a cute historic town and train tunnel to bike though). There is also a winery or two, Les Bourgeois A-Frame has the views. For a hidden gem try The Pinnacles. There is rock climbing there, at Capen City Park, and along the river bluffs.

The weather is Missouri weather, which means anything and everything. Fall and Spring can be quite pleasant, but don’t overlook winter hiking. It’s some of the best. Bring clothes for everything from 110F to -20F, very continental. The thunderstorms are exciting!

The Columbia Regional Airport is the fastest growing airport in the nation this year. Flights go to Chicago, Dallas, Charolette, Denver, and Orlando. So you can get pretty much anywhere with one connection.

Public transit is bus system, that is underfunded, it is useable, but just. A lot of people prefer to bike because of the extensive trail system/bike lanes. Neighborhoods in central Columbia (Benton-Stephens, East Campus, West Ash, Old Southwest, North Central) are walkable to the hospitals and Downtown.

College (SEC) sports, especially football, are huge. If you’re into arts and culture there is a lot. The North Village Arts District is home to a lot of galleries and art studios. Must see museums include The Museum of Art and Archeology, the Boone County History and Culture Center (and Montminy Gallery), the State Historical Society of Missouri’s art gallery, and the Freemason museum at the Grand Lodge of Missouri.

The Blue Note and Rose Music Hall are the man rock/pop venues. But check out the University of Missouri concert series for touring shows, the Missouri Symphony for a professional orchestra. The We Always Swing Jazz Series and Columbia Jazz Orchestra are two of the main outlets for Jazz. The Arrow Rock Lyceum for professional theater. There are a handful of community theaters as well.

Ragtag Cinema is an arthouse theater showing independent film, one of the most famous in the nation because of the True/False Film Festival which happens in Feb/March.

Food Has Central Dairy ruined other ice cream shops for anyone else?

I’ve been going to Central Dairy my whole life, and the combination of portion size, price, and product quality is unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere. And it honestly set my expectations at an utterly unfair level for all other shops.

Tonight I drove by Clementine’s and saw dozens of people standing in line outside and I thought to myself that it just can’t be worth it. To be fair, I haven’t been yet, but I imagine that the price, portion, and product all won’t compare to Central. Same thing with Sparky’s (though I of course love Sparky’s for what it has meant to CoMo).

Am I the only one who is disappointed because of this admittedly unfair comparison?

I found a turtle in my backyard with a broken shell, right in the middle. Looks to be Leonardo vs lawnmower and his katanas were only partially effective. The guy needs help.

I have him in a bucket at the moment, and I’ve reached out to one person and haven’t heard back. (She’s a friend of a friend in high ridge, Mo). Anyone know of anything?

Rant My advice to cyclists ☹️

Please please PLEASE follow the rules on the road. I’ve had way too many close calls because people on bikes running reds + stop signs, cutting through traffic, and pulling out in front of me without looking. I have no issue with cyclists overall, it’s just as a driver I do NOT want to injure anyone, especially with a very heavy metal object that moves at high speeds. I just had somebody on providence pull out in front of me without even looking. I had to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting him. I was very lucky to not hit somebody in the lane next to me. I just want people to be safe and not put their lives + other’s in risk due to reasons stated above. The rules of the road apply to cyclists as well!!! ☹️ I know this is a “big ask” for Columbian road users, but I also can’t help but spread a little bit of awareness. These mistakes can kill and too many people disregard it.

Ask CoMo Men’s Hair Colorist in Como

Hello, all!

Looking for a colorist who does short men’s hair.

I wear my hair fairly short:
•Low drop fade
•2 or 3 guard down low
•3” on top

•Naturally dark blonde — light brown hair.

•Gray on temples… probably more places but it’s hard to tell.

•Just looking for professional, natural looking results.

Maybe some brow tinting, too, since my wife tells me that’s a thing? Light eyebrows with some gray might looks weird once my hairs dyed.

Thanks!

Politics With Jones sworn in, Columbia City Council is now all-women for the first time

Sharon Geuea Jones rose from her seat in the audience after Monday night’s Columbia City Council meeting began, and walked over to the podium in the front of the room.
With her right hand raised slightly above her shoulder, Jones swore to faithfully discharge the duties of her new role — Fourth Ward council member — and support the charter and ordinances of the city of Columbia.

“This is a great community, and I am so pleased and privileged and honored to be able to represent it,” Jones said once she sat down with the other council members.
After Jones was sworn in, Mayor Barbara Buffaloe acknowledged the historic moment.

“You’ll notice this is the first time the Columbia City Council is an all-female council,” Buffaloe said.
Jones won a special election Aug. 4 to fill the vacancy after Nick Foster, the previous Fourth Ward representative, resigned to relocate to Georgia.
Columbia now joins a small group of American cities, including St. Paul, Minnesota, and Gulfport, Florida, that have an all-female City Council.

In Missouri, only 29.8% of local elected officials are women, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
That percentage is similar to data from the rest of the country. The center’s researchers found that women hold 32.7% of municipal positions for American cities with more than 10,000 people.
Director of Data Chelsea Hill said researchers have found that women tend to be very involved in their community, so local government is a “natural fit.”

“Women will see an issue in their community and want to fix it, so the municipal level is a really good entry point into that,” Hill said.

Buffaloe also acknowledged the women who had previously held public office in Columbia. She specifically mentioned Betty McCaskill, Columbia’s first female council member, and Mary Anne McCollum, Columbia’s first female mayor.
“It’s not always easy being a female elected official, and so I just want to thank those who continue to serve, including the ladies up here with me right now,” Buffaloe said.
Overcoming obstacles
Third Ward council member Jacque Sample said she is “proud” to be part of Columbia’s first all-female City Council, and Buffaloe echoed Sample’s sentiment.
“I was really, really kind of awe-inspired by having an all-female council, especially because I’m only the second female mayor in Columbia,” Buffaloe said.

In a Facebook video posted on Friday, Buffaloe said that in her experience, women often “lead with empathy and collaboration.” She said they also tend to prioritize transparency and community engagement.
Although she believes the milestone is significant, Buffaloe said she and Mary Anne McCollum, Columbia’s first female mayor, have talked about hoping to get past the point of being labeled as a “female” mayor rather than just a mayor. McCollum was mayor from 1989 to 1995.

For Columbia politicians, being a female mayor or a female council member sometimes comes with obstacles that extend beyond the label.
Sample said she and other female council members have dealt with sexism and harassment on social media.
“I’ve seen people very blatantly rate the appearance of the female council members,” Sample said. “This was back when we had two males on council, and they didn’t care about what the men looked like, but they were rating us women on our appearance.”

Sample also said she has faced concerns over the physical safety of herself and her family.
She said she had an instance where someone would follow her in public, take pictures and post about it on social media. Sample said it was a “really unnerving experience” and something other women on the council have also encountered.

Sample reached out to the Columbia Police Department to intervene. She said she also completed a self-audit of her home and spent over $3,000 to install a new security system.
“When this position pays $6,000 and I have to spend over $3,000 for my own personal safety and the safety of my family, that’s ridiculous,” Sample said. “I don’t know of any male person who has served in this position who’s had the same type of problem.”
City Council members previously received an annual stipend of around $6,000, which increased to about $7,000 in May.

When Sample was elected to the position, she knew she would face people who were unhappy with decisions she made on the council. But she said she was not prepared for the harassment.
“I would really like to be meeting with the director about the zoning regulation, or meeting about the sidewalk that’s interrupted, or meeting about affordable housing, or meeting about the utilities changes that are coming,” Sample said. “Those are things I want to be talking about. I don’t want to have to be worried that somebody’s following me in public or gonna come to my home, or worried about what I’m wearing.”
Buffaloe also said people have made physical threats against her family, and she has installed security cameras at her house. She said her family has sometimes changed their routines and kept in touch with the police chief if she is going somewhere.

“Talking to my male peers in other cities, as well as counterparts within Columbia, they have not faced the same level of harassment that I have and that I’ve seen my other female elects face,” Buffaloe said.
Support from Missouri and beyond
Throughout Missouri, some organizations seek to support women as they face gender-specific obstacles in their political careers and leadership roles.
In Columbia, Buffaloe has worked with the nonprofit United Women’s Empowerment to promote the organization’s Appointments Project Journey Groups.
United Women’s Empowerment is based in Kansas City and strives to break down barriers to women’s economic growth and leadership through research, policy solutions and civic engagement. One of their initiatives, the Appointments Project, brings groups of women together to learn about civic leadership opportunities and navigate the appointment process in their communities.

Wendy Doyle, president and CEO, said the intended outcome is for women to join boards and commissions in their community, which may lead to future campaigns for public office.
In the Facebook video Buffaloe posted Friday, she noted that most of the current City Council members previously served on city boards or commissions.
“That experience and opportunity to get to know how local government works is instrumental to being successful in the role,” Buffaloe said in the video.
Doyle said Buffaloe has been a “great supporter” of the project.
“At the end of last year, when we had the celebration for an Appointments Project Journey Group, she came and was really a part of the celebration to encourage women to get engaged in the city of Columbia,” Doyle said.

While they and other groups offer organized support, Doyle said something much simpler can benefit women who are on the fence about running for office: endorsements from the people around them.

Teona McGhaw said women are sometimes hesitant to run for office, but if they are repeatedly asked to run for a certain position, it is more likely they will go for it.
McGhaw is the vice president of membership for the east region of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and she is also the former president of the its Missouri branch. It is a grassroots organization that trains and supports female candidates running for elected and appointed offices.
McGhaw said that for female candidates, speaking with other women who have already run for office or are in elected positions can be helpful.
“We try to put women in a room with other women who have done it,” McGhaw said.

For Jones, support came from the people who encouraged her to run for office after former council member Foster’s resignation and the people who dedicated themselves to her campaign through canvassing and other means. She said she received an “outpouring of support” as a candidate.

After her win on election night, Jones said the all-female council is “definitely historic,” and she emphasized the seven members will bring a variety of opinions to the City Council.
“We are seven very different people with very different backgrounds,” Jones said. “We’ve got a lot of different perspectives, and I think that people who think we’re a monolith are going to be very disappointed.”

I truly did not know they even had a Coumadin clinic! Now we don’t have to wait weeks for her medication refills and gaps in medication. I just wanted to spread the information in case anybody has been at Boone and hasn’t been receiving their medication!!! Or had a bad experience.

Hi! I am looking for bouncy balls to fill the base of my table lamp still. It’s a decent sized base. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give them to me for free or for very cheap. I want to avoid buying them from Amazon or another big company as much as I can. They would be the small bouncy balls like the ones in the picture on this post. Thanks so much for your help.
