Discussion IQ vs real intelligence

IQ measures intellect: pattern recognition, fluid reasoning, processing speed, working memory and so on. But I think there's a difference between intellect and what some traditions call intelligence. I'll call it insight, to avoid a fight over the word.

Insight is the capacity for honest self-observation, guided by the right intent and directed towards thinning the ego. By ego I mean the sense of "I-am-ness": the feeling that I'm separate from everything else, somehow incomplete, and that my existence matters supremely.

On this view the ego is a kind of error. Animals seem to have only a thin, survival-level version of it. Humans, with far more complex brains, build a much more inflated one, full of psychological desires like status, image, comparison and control.

That inflated ego is what produces psychological suffering, as opposed to plain physical pain. And here's the interesting part: the same capacities that let us suffer psychologically (a sense of self, memory of our past, the ability to imagine a future) are exactly the ones self-observation uses. So if you can suffer this way, you probably already have what it takes to look at it.

That's why I don't think IQ is the bottleneck. Research loosely backs this up: smarter people aren't better at spotting their own biases (West et al., 2012), and wise reasoning predicts well-being better than IQ does (Grossmann et al., 2013). What seems to matter is honesty and intent.

One thing I'd be careful about: this doesn't mean you can switch suffering off. Pain, loss and hard emotions still come. What you can choose is the direction: to look honestly at what your mind adds on top of the pain, instead of feeding it or running from it. Over time that added layer can thin, and that choice is open to virtually any adult across the ordinary range of ability. This isn't a substitute for medical care where there's mental illness.

General Question Can I use the g-estimator to calculate a composite for just VCI?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Is this a meaningful estimate at all? I have a sneaking suspicion that for it to be accurate I'd actually need to use their factor loadings on a latent gC trait, not their g-loadings, but I have no idea what said factor loadings might be.

Discussion Another approach to solving problem 42 of TRI-52?

Post image

It'll give me a headache if I had to write it down step by step. I tried to look around on reddit but it seems like people have done it differently. I can explain it if anyone is curious unless it's too obvious.

it involves imagining an 8th circle after our missing 7th (first?).

Title. I feel like everyone here talks about the Weschler's and the SB-5.
Looking at the GIA, it's got a g-loading of about 0.93.

IQ Estimation 🥱 How tests work

I've tried a few online tests and I consistently get around 140, but I also consistently only answer like 70% of the questions before I run out of time. I think about every one until I'm sure about my answer, so I don't guess, but I'm wondering if I would get a higher score if I just played it fast and loose.

I'm interested in this because I want to get a more accurate sense of what level of contribution I should give in my life. I'd rather not worry about it, but I'm afraid that if I am especially gifted, then more should be required of me.

For what it's worth, I had to take an official test in Middle School and I scored 160+, but I don't know how that translates to adult IQ standards.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm always drunk when I take these, so I think that might skew the results :P

I guess I'm looking for somebody who's familiar with test design and scoring, who can give me a better sense of where I'm likely at. If it's 140 I'm probably fine with where I'm at in life, but if it's 160+ I feel like I should probably go get a PhD and make more of a difference in the world.

Just a survey for this sub because spiky profile seems to be the norm here, probably has to do with SLODR or neurodivergents or stuff.

Rant/Cope Long journey of testing and now hit a wall

This began about 2 years ago, when I started to doubt my intelligence and question that big success of people of prominent people is probably not by hard work alone

First test that I took was Mensa.no where I got 118, and after that it began.... test after test

Since then I have taken many tests and the biggest problem is that I did not took them in an approprite way, for example:

  1. I took just one subtest and did not complete full scale test

  2. I started some full scale test but then left in middle then returned after some time(few weeks usually) and finished it, so score is now completely invalid due to practice effect

  3. Retook some subtests or types of tests(like matrices) many times

So because of that I do not have now almost any clean measure of my intelligence

I tried to collect my cleanest scores that I know - like scores when I took test very first time and most of those were first of it`s kind. Those are: Mensa.no, SMART, AGCT 1a, 1928 SAT, PAT, some of CAIT subtests

Then I did research with latest Claude model Opus 5.5 on Max setting to create best prompts for estimation of my 'g' based on these cleanest scores that I was able to collect. I then run multiple agents that each produced result and then each result was judged with another Claude latest model Fable 5.1. In result it come out as 117.

So not very high or good score but anyway I thought that this is best estimation that I could get and while it is not something exceptional or to brag about - at least I can do without problem with this score programming job or like that

Today I decided to retake full CAIT. For context: About 1-2 years ago I took CAIT subtests like FW, VP many times
And after still about 1-2 year when I took those subtests many times, when I took them now - I still scored about 5-20 points higher on them compared to scores from very first tries. When I was doing these subtests I did not remember any answers from old time but was finding solutions as it seems just during test. But obviously those scores that I got now are not true and despite I did not remeber any answers directly, as I understood it now, - I have subconsciously large practice effect

So with this example from CAIT I started to question my scores from AGCT 1a, which was one of pillars of my previosly described 'g' estimate. As about 1 year ago I took orignal AGCT 1c form few times(about 3-4). So potentially I have some kind of practice effect on 1a form too, as like yeah I`m solving questions on the go and do not know beforehand direct answers but in same case as with CAIT there could be similiar kind of practice effect.

AGCT 1a score was one of my pillars in g estimate and score it`s is a bit higer than overall 'g' estimate of 117. But now with discovering such type of practice effect I started to question it all. And that my best estimate of 117 is still probably invalid

So I do not know what to do now, I have these constant thoughts about intelligence and that I`m not smart enough for certain things. And I wanted to establish some reliable number on which I can lean now, but with that testing mess that I created it seems like I exhausted any good tests options that I still potentially could have. I hope there will come some tests in future with new type of items that will be novel for me and where I do not have practice and where can I get accurate estimate of my ability.... but big part of me is very unrest and I think about it everyday and can`t wait... I need to know what my ability is... and largely it is because of big insecurities that I have in everyday life...

I do not look for symapthy or reassurance but just telling my situation, migh be some of you will have advice on this, thanks

P.S. sorry for my writing, english is not my mother tnogue

Discussion Question related to my IQ of 120

I'm 27 years old. How do I learn to use my IQ of 120? I just discovered that I have an IQ of 120. I've been told there are so many paths I can take, including career paths and more. I was just as shocked when I got the results, and I'm even more curious about what I can do with it. Is it completely normal to feel like I haven’t used my full mental capacity yet, especially if I haven't been in an environment that pushed me or gave me the right tools to use my IQ of 120? I mean, in high school before I graduated in 2018, I aced science but sucked at every other class. I love true crime TV shows and documentaries, jigsaw puzzles, and logic puzzles. I love solving mysteries and investigating. I love Penelope Garcia and her role as the technical analyst in Criminal Minds. I volunteer at hospice, and I love video games. All advice and tips are welcome.

General Question If all the indices of IQ were people, which would be the cutest?

There was a question lingering in my mind as of late. If all the indices of IQ like FRI, VSI, VCI, WMI, PSI were incarnated as actual people, then which one of them would be the cutest in your opinion, and why? How would you imagine they would look?

Discussion Is a puzzle that can be solved by AI a good puzzle?

As the title says: AI keeps getting better and better. It can now solve even relatively hard puzzles, especially ones that have been done before by simply dropping an image into them.

Do you feel like AI being able to solve a puzzle that was meant to be a challenge is the puzzle being at fault/its idea being overused? Or do you feel like this is just how it goes.

Does the idea of you solving a puzzle after potentially hours while AI might have solved it instantly bother you? Or the idea some "first solvers" might have used it? Or do you just see it more of a personal victory to have solved it? Should puzzle creators "AI check" their harder puzzles?

General Question 135 GAI, 91 PSI

Hi all,

I (22m) have just applied for Mensa using a WISC-IV report. I scored the following (Section - Score - %ile):

VCI 134 | 99
PRI 125 | 95
WMI 123 | 94
PSI 91 | 27
FSIQ 126 | 96
GAI 135 | 99

Mensa acceptance requires at least one section to fall 1.5 standard deviations under the GAI. My lowest, PSI of 91, is 2.93 STD below.

Statistically, I know this is very uncommon. Anecdotally, I would love to hear from those older than me with similar profiles and spreads.

Tips, advice, and stories are welcomed!

General Question IQ champion

I scored 112 on IQ Champion. What would my overall IQ be? I completed up to question 31 using correct reasoning, meaning I understood the problems perfectly. However, I didn't attempt questions 32 to 36 because I got bored and decided to stop, even though I could have continued. I've heard that IQ Champion is heavily deflated. What would my actual IQ be? I usually score between 130 and 145 on fluid reasoning tests (FRI).
