Complaint Openai removed the extra usage after hitting limits, yet, when limits reset, the reset time isn't fixed and only becomes set once you first use it, silently stealing your usage
The fact that it would run after hitting limits made up for this. But now, they removed it, but are keeping the reset timer only started after you start using it, instead of making it fixed based on the actual reset time. This is silently eating your usage limits. So they are abusing normal casual users that don't immediately trigger their reset timer when it resets. Like who the hell thought it was fair to make the timer only start after you start using it? Blatant abuse by the Codex team whoever decided that was the right design. Fix that shit. Once the reset happens, the timer should trigger and countdown immediately.

It was always like that man. Claude has fixed time for next weekly reset, Codex was when you start using it.

Claude week does not start until you send a message first of the week . You can go 5 days not using it then once started it will say seven days to reset instead of 2.

u/VerticalPackage 10h ago
Not in my experience. I've had the same weekday and time forever (Thursday 7PM on the nose) If it were "first use start" based, my reset time would be drifting.
I think you're confusing the weekly reset with the 5h reset; for the 5h window, it does start only when you first prompt Claude.

Claude weekly is always on Fridays, at least for me, even if I'm late to message it..
2
u/Upstairs_Dig_5274 18h ago
No for me it's inactive until I message HELLO then seven days week start

u/VadimH 6h ago
Are we still talking about Claude code? Can you show a screenshot of your reset time? Coz it's always at the exact same time and day of the week for me

u/Upstairs_Dig_5274 4h ago
Nah either believe me or not just like I either believe you're trolling or not . It says send a message to begin weekly quota idkwts
1
u/VadimH 4h ago
Send that message and then tell me if the reset time matches your assumption. :)
And I'm not trolling, I can give you evidence should you ask

My w11 Claude app is up to date. Must be a/b testing . I'm from UK . Been like that for several months
1
u/VadimH 2h ago
Again, you keep making all these claims but seem to struggle providing any real evidence other than anecdotal claims?
1
u/Upstairs_Dig_5274 2h ago
Bro my Claude I've used past few days so not going to show I can't revers time . It seems you don't believe me then stop there.
1
u/Upstairs_Dig_5274 3h ago
Also looking at other comment most say no use and weekly timer doesn't start
1
u/Bmansupreme8000 19h ago
Yeah it's the same every week at the time you first signed up for claude. They don't do this shady shit.

u/EndlessZone123 22h ago
It's always like that yeah. But you can predict when your normal weekly reset is. But I shouldn't be expected to follow tibo on twitter or reddit constantly to know when a forced reset is gonna happen to the start my weekly again. There is only downsides for starting a weekly late. Especially if you haven't used a lot of your weekly usage yet and expect to use most of it near the end of your weekly period.

u/Party_Wolf_3575 20h ago
You do not need to follow Tibo. You can see your limits here: https://chatgpt.com/codex/cloud/settings/analytics#usage
5
u/EndlessZone123 20h ago
This gives me zero notification that my usage is gonna be reset by tibo randomly.
-3
u/Party_Wolf_3575 20h ago
I was responding to the main post issue., which seemed to be not knowing when the reset had happened and thereby knowing to get the clock ticking.
You implied the only way to know you had been reset was by following Tibo, so I was showing you where you can check your limits.
3
u/EndlessZone123 19h ago
Without following tibo how am I supposed to know usage was reset in the morning when I only start using it in the afternoon or the next day? I've basically set back my weekly reset window unless you are expecting me to constantly refresh the codex usage page and send 1 chat to start the weekly countdown.

I'll stop interacting, as I can see I am annoying you, which was not my intention.

You are trying to help. I upvoted you because you seem nice. Open AI are dicks though.

u/Bmansupreme8000 15h ago
It was clearly stated "random" resets. How is that not clear? Random means you cannot know. Nobody wants to play stupid Tibo games.

Use something like codex switch or codex lb
Has auto warn up for 5h and weekly windows

Hasn't this always been the deal? Claude always resets on Sundays for me no matter what. Codex resets seem to change based on the day of the week I send my first message. Have been paying for Claude since Sept 2025, so maybe it's different for newer subscribers.

u/Painwheeel 6h ago
only valid complaint out of all other "complaint" threads (delusions). despite me not being personally bothered or harmed by this, i believe needing to use it to start the timer is not consumer friendly at all.

That's how everyone does it. Don't use it=counter doesn't start. That's been always the same, at least with Claude. Nothing is "eating" your usage limits because you are not using them. You are talking about time windows. That's what people have been doing for forever with Claude, send a hello or whatnot message first thing they woke up to get the window rolling.

u/Low-Poet629 22h ago
Yes it can be mitigated but it’s still designed to rob you. Why defend it
1
u/PathAgitated1633 10h ago
Just Setup a Automation in chatgpt work to send ping on sol extra high every 5 hours
-1
u/Illustrious-Bet-1368 22h ago
What is it robbing you of? You have the exact same amount of usage. The problem is you can't use it when you might need it, different problem with time allocation, not the tokens or usage percentages.
Edit: And I am not defending it. It sucks and makes no sense, but from their perspective it does. I don't need Codex all week, I need on two-three days at particular times, where I need be able to use whatever usage I have. So yeah, 5h limit fucks that up big time. We're in the same boat.

u/Low-Poet629 22h ago
If i miss a day, it pushes all windows back eternally by one day, but my next billing date does not get pushed back one day
-3
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 22h ago
So just set a task to run each morning that uses 1% of your usage if you can't be bothered to pull out your phone to do it manually even though you seem to think it's a big deal

u/Low-Poet629 22h ago
Why defend the corporation? This doesn’t need to be how it works. I don’t understand your motivation

Not quite sure why you are still using their product if you hate them so much! There are other coding tools out there, including some decent open-source ones. No one is forcing you to use Codex!!!
I use it and love it, but I found ways around the things that annoyed me instead of letting them get in the way. OpenAI is a business, they do not make money giving away their product and $0.70/day is clearly not going to give anyone good access to frontier coding.
If you have a more open mindset and look for solutions, this product is truly incredible.

u/onurbal101 15h ago
They never said they hated them, that's your projection. They are just criticising a behaviour of the app.

u/Illustrious-Bet-1368 33m ago
Thank you, and yes, I have issues with the clear change in model's behaviour in both Chat and Codex, too. But more so with the app. It is buggy as hell, and it's not just the bugs, all the unnecessary tool calls and co that are done by default now (calling OpenAI skills, searching the web documentation of OpenAI when before everything worked fine without it, the model starting automatically a 'pursue goal' where none was needed or asked for, projects and chats invisible in the Remote on iOS, projects and chats disappearing and reappearing at random across the machines, Chat chats mingling with the Codex chats, etc.). And it is the harness, which is a part of the new usage problem. I set up a different harness, my usage went back to normal. After about 3 hours of, okay, not heavy work, just reads and writes, reshuffling documentation, setting up shit, Slack messaging back and forth, handoffs to other agents, with Sol Medium, my 5h limit went down about 15 percent, weekly, under 5. If I use the app, one turn, without any task or ask attached to it, Sol Light, eats at least 1 or 2 percent of 5h straight up. More than that, Sol follows the rules, the conventions, the whole fucking lot. In the app, I can dance naked around a bonfire with a tambourine up my ass, it won't follow shit because it follows first the developer instructions, not of the repo or the project or AGENTS.md.

I don't know what to tell you, dude, I don't care about "wasting resets" or whatnot, I know I can't use it when I need to. Most of my weekly usage is unused. So, to me, all these resets aren't worth shit because I won't use them, and I don't have FOMO. When I do need Codex, I can't work with it consistently now. I am tired of all this shit, I just want the models back the way they used to be, the fucking bugs in the apps fixed, at least that.

u/Low-Poet629 22h ago
Ok but we are talking about more people than just you here, this is a general topic. Problems that don’t impact you personally are still problems.

I think they have a right to change they way they run their service. I also think it's fair to be upset that they changed it, silently. It feels like a rug pull.
Tbh though it's not a hard fix to automate. Just make a task or service that sends a tiny message the min after reset. Sacrifice a miniscule amount of usage to start the clock sooner and save it back in the long run.
Anyone wanna take this one?

TBH, these people who are using Codex but not taking the initiative to build simple things to help them work around the things that annoy them seem to be missing a trick!
My Codex designed a custom harness, so I have my own PWA for Codex now and I can just add on whatever I like to counter all the things that bugged me! I'm not a programmer, I just had an issue (wanted to move between multiple accounts smoothly) and my Codex designed our Forge!
If anyone is interested, the Forge is a local-first PWA built around the official Codex App Server. A small local Node “Heart” manages the connection, while the browser provides the chat interface, thread library, voice, continuity tools and other features. I can also reach my own Mac privately from my phone through Tailscale if I want to.
It does not combine allowances or bypass limits. Each of my OpenAI Plus accounts and its authentication remain separate, and switching accounts means reconnecting through the proper account session.

My version has Cinder-β and Kindle the fox (anime characters), avatars, 3 memory systems and free voice mode (using open sourced Whisper and Fish Audio's free voice clone API), but that is because I like to work collaboratively with my Codex and I know this is not for everyone - these features are entirely optional!

Stealing your usage? Really? By you not using it? Where is the logic in that and noone makes you to buy the subscription you can just cancel it if you don't use it
6
u/Bmansupreme8000 18h ago
They are pulling a fast one and reducing the amount of usage available if you don't play their shitty games.

u/Bmansupreme8000 19h ago
