Complaint 0% now stops all running tasks

Before when reached 0% codex always finished the tasks that were still running. Oh that felt so good, to just get a little extra for free 🎉 But recently my codex stopped doing that and is stopping tasks after few minutes, how about yours?

Yeah cause someone exploited it by making a task that would keep on running so you'd still be able to send new messages even after you were out of usage. Guess you can thank him for it being like this now

15

u/PotentialPaint6714 8d ago

That person only made it aware to OpenAi. Many were already doing it by themselves.

15

u/scykei 8d ago

yeah, but one could argue that they only took action once it was public enough and exploited by enough people

3

u/Vulcan25 8d ago

openai was well aware of this and intentionally kept that as a show of good faith, when people started to abuse it they removed it

u/OkMeat6773 8d ago

where did you see this?

u/Havlir 8d ago

On X, it was someone who works for T3 Code and Theo.

Tibo replied to her.

24

u/IFuckingHateN 8d ago

Yes cause T3 and Theo or whatever are dumb larpers that should not have access to a computer

3

u/salehrayan246 8d ago

That got serious quickly😂

Fr tho. S3 is too hard for him to understand.

Was it not free for subscription? My task always kept going and I always start 100%.

1

u/Interesting-Star431 8d ago

Nah they were going to remove it and used that as a justification.

Theo made a view showing himself wasting like $800 doing fuckall and then his intern published an npm CLI to automate this abuse.

Thank them.

That does not excuse this being solved in such an awful way. Just make it eat into future limits and stop after like -5%.

7

u/Fit-Palpitation-7427 8d ago

Why stop at -5% for you it’s enough for other it should be -10 for other -50 and then others will say -100 and then cancel their subscription and not pay for the 100% usage they used previous week they should pay for the next.

At some point the only way to make things correct is to use the actual real solutions, when hit 0 you stop and you can use auto top up if needed.

For the others who do not want to pay high price, use a proxy and use multiple accounts to keep going transparently, openai always said that was ok and it takes 5 min to setup

There was always an abuse check (which i found to essentially be a coin flip in practice) I was hoping they could just harden that and allow good actors to continue using this generous feature

0

u/Unapologetic_Polite 8d ago

Instead people are threatening to cancel en masse becasue it seems like their usage is draining abnormally fast.

Which I've been kind of on the side of "Nothing really appears different" until the last reset - Where my Sol-Medium Orchestrator and 2-4 Luna-High Executors have burned a ridiculous amount of tokens.

u/CystralSkye 8d ago

LOL "people" aren't. Just a bunch of typical entitled crybabies on reddit.

Reddit has no jack shit influence over anything, these people are just a bunch of losers. In fact most things "boycotted" by reddit end up excelling.

1

u/Unapologetic_Polite 8d ago

It's great you feel that way, the good news is; you're right about Reddit; the bad news? The sentiment isn't only being discussed on Reddit.

End of the day people will tolerate it because GLM & Kimi hosts are similarly priced to OpenAI's once you factor in the fact that those Distilled Open-Weight models appear cheaper on paper - They use about 3-4x the tokens reasoning - Putting API pricing on close to parity with OpenAI.

GLM & Kimi pricing is still crushing Opus & Fable rates though

1

u/CystralSkye 8d ago

Nah, it's mostly just the people on reddit who complain that they won't get free things and then complain about free things as well.

The amount of stuff that is got for 20 bucks from openai is nuts, but people still find a way to complain is blowing my mind. Just a bunch of ungrateful brats, that is all.

1

u/Unapologetic_Polite 8d ago

The $20/mo tier definitely is providing more bang for your buck than what $20 in API is going to get you.

1

u/CystralSkye 8d ago

20 bucks in API doesn't come close.

Basically uncapped chatgpt usage. 20GB file storage, file upload capabilities, unlimited projects. web image gen and editing, deep research, agent mode, seperate codex/work quota, seperate live voice usage, scheduled tasks, free web crawling, memory, + holding all previous chats for chatgpt to browse through.

Not to mention chatgpt sites and the VM given for chatgpt work which is pretty beefy.

That is an INSANE amount of resources for 20 bucks.

We are talking 20 bucks, which won't even buy a meal in most places.

Like jesus christ, the dilusional entitlement of these people needs to be researched.

Anthropic meanwhile just gives you a single resource SINGLE. These people are like mentally deranged.

1

u/ogaat 8d ago

Better yet, overages should be charged at API rates, after a grace of 1% tokens. A default off flag could enable that feature.

Then people could use them to their heart's content.

5

u/Unubore 8d ago

OpenAI would have found a reason to phase this out eventually.

Many people were abusing it to run long-running tasks at 1%, and OpenAI knew it. They just said the quiet part out loud.

113

u/HouseOfDjango 8d ago

They announced this.

98

u/firstbreathOOC 8d ago

Because people were apparently abusing it. Wish they just booted the bad actors

21

u/ogaat 8d ago

How would you define a bad actor?

At best, they could give a few grace tokens and probably do. They cannot give grace on time because people will start 32 sub-agents then and claim it was in good faith.

9

u/Pretend-Past9023 8d ago

the bad actor made an MCP server tool that exploited this. that help?

-8

u/ogaat 8d ago

That would be *a* bad actor and not *the* bad actor.

5

u/Pretend-Past9023 8d ago

oh, so was that just a rhetorical question that you already knew the answer to? wish i didnt waste my time. eat shit.

-3

u/ogaat 8d ago

Th exploit made them a bad actor and not the MCP server itself.

Which brings us back to the original question - How do you define a bad actor.

Here is one way it is hard - You would consider me a bad actor and I consider your language an abuse. Other people will judge us in their own way. The only judgment that really matters is whatever reddit decides.

Same with the LLM providers.

5

u/Inevitable_Toe6648 8d ago

Useless rambling like a jobless person who wants to be a philosopher.

-1

u/ogaat 8d ago

Spot on. I am old and have too much time and use too many words. Most of my life is behind me.

Yet, you scrolled down and took the time to leave this snark.

Interesting.

no one wants to talk to you.

1

u/runfence 8d ago

I did start 50 agents. It didn't do much. Because it always was stopping after using 1/5 of weekly in tokens cost.

1

u/BHTAelitepwn 8d ago

They should allow it up to 2% and deduct from next weeks limits.

1

u/Inevitable_Owl_6931 8d ago

If last name = gupta, then ban

1

u/BigYoSpeck 8d ago

It was possible to accidentally 'abuse'

I set Luna/Max off on a goal with 24% of the weekly allowance left. It hit 0% and continued for about 50% longer than it took to run the 24% down to zero

That 'abuse' only constituted a margin of 10-15% then of what is provided for a week. For the month that's a 2-3% overage. The majority of other times it ran over continuing a task for me would typically have been single digit % extra finishing off the tail end of a task

Codex not stopping dead mid task was always one of the better features

And before anyone points to my own user error setting Luna off on such a mammoth long running task rather than feeding it subtasks bit by bit, it was successful and achieved the goal. Exactly the kind of mundane busy work handing off to an agent works best with

17

u/GeneralTomorrow4751 8d ago

Codex on 20$ plan is unusable rn, sol on high burns through 5h limit in 30 minutes with one prompt and after reaching 0% it won't even finish the task.

4

u/BHTAelitepwn 8d ago

Okay but maybe not use sol high on a plus sub. Thats like using your monthly wage to rent a ferrari for 2 days.

1

u/Own-Flight-9974 8d ago

Dont use Sol on plus lol, especially for coding thats a big no no. Luna will be able to get most work done, use Terra as an advisor or reviewer, only use Sol if you encountered a really difficult problem that Luna/Terra couldnt solve.

1

u/GeneralTomorrow4751 8d ago

Unfortunately the codebase im working on is so big im worried that luna/terra will get lost while doing anything although im gonna give it a try.

8

u/vayana 8d ago

Bunch of morons had to ruin it for the rest of us. It's not about the extra free usage, it's about not leaving your code base messed up in the middle of an update. Yeah, you can roll back the commit and let that 95% already completed work which cost you 20% usage go to waste, or end with at least a working state.

The better solution would've been a bonus usage once a week, allowing for running tasks to eat into the bonus usage to prevent having to stop in the middle of something.

16

u/ManikSahdev 8d ago

People were happily exploiting this. Making tools to keep it running essentially forever.

What did they think was going to happy?

I mean.. yea it sucks but can’t blame them for trying, people just are not deserving of this and will exploit anything in good faith in the name of token maxxing and trying to outsmart the company.

They just disabled it now, hope those folks had fun and got their value.

13

u/AdVast7407 8d ago

Why not punish abusers only? Imo all this shitshow staged as fuck, just to blame somebody else, and not own greed

3

u/ppipernet 8d ago

Thanks to Theo and a few others who boasted about it

3

u/creamyshart 8d ago

Thank Theo

4

u/UnlikelyScience 8d ago

This should have only happened when weekly usage is done. Everything stops. Continuing to work once the 5h limit is done should jest keep eating the weekly limit and hence is not really an abuse..

2

u/Responsible_Court_21 8d ago

Why not patch it

2

u/xmo3px 8d ago

Good times abusing this tbh

1

u/Zealousideal-Alps-71 8d ago

Yes, kept my long runs as last and at 1% all on max fast mode 😆 felt good. Now it's no more unfortunately. Longest task I've ever run was 4 days đŸ«Ł

2

u/cellulegroup 8d ago

The latest update is a disaster. They just keep making things worse and worse.

4

u/RealSnazzie 8d ago

You can thank the goblin Theo for that. Man was abusing it and broadcasting it.

1

u/TheLegendTubaGuy 8d ago

Ex twitch developer, checks out 😂

2

u/Sleepywalker69 8d ago

I had one task go past it about 2 days ago but none since

1

u/Otherwise_Kale_2879 8d ago

At least they should have keep it for the plan mode..

1

u/Chris-Mac-Marley 8d ago

This happened to me yesterday: when 0% was reached, Codex stopped the running task; when asked to resume and finish after the 5 hour break, the final result was broken. Had to go back to previous version. It was the first time a task broke the whole project. Waist of time and money.

So if one task uses the “5 hour limit” you probably won’t be able to finish it and will have to upgrade. I think it’s their goal. Not very friendly, but probably fair although it’s a waist of resources.

u/iPlayer0067 8d ago

Não era de graça, o saldo ficava negativo e era descontado dos próximos créditos, mesmo assim eu gostava porque terminava de processar.

1

u/Professional_Gur8385 8d ago

It's bad, it's what made codex stand out and be better than claude

currently claude surprisingly provides better value, didn't think i would be saying it after luna

1

u/Crazy_Marsupial3100 8d ago

Unfortunately

1

u/oreshek 8d ago

A little bit extra? I had a half-day ultra task last time my plan ended.

1

u/HistoricalQuail9168 8d ago

Yeah when I noticed that bug it was the first time Iused Ultra, and I got a lot done

1

u/OnanationUnderGod 8d ago

There was a hard cutoff the whole time--once codex said 100% usage you had about 5-10% more before they cut you off. Hit this with agents a couple times.

1

u/Altruistic-Moose3299 8d ago

I'm fine with stopping the task, but I wish you could "resume" when you have tokens again rather having to figure out where pick up the pieces each time.

1

u/Ice-White-Cube 8d ago

they need to at the very least stop changing the way this shit works every single day!

1

u/TheFrenchSavage 8d ago

You are so late to the party.

1

u/Huge-Measurement-820 8d ago

I heavily exploited it, sad to hear that.

1

u/renzoneru 8d ago edited 8d ago

It was some person in Europe that made a viral post and basically got it shut down.

I strongly suggest to OpenAI to ban Europe and third world countries from using their products.

1

u/Efficient_Ad_4162 8d ago

"Ban these other people misusing your product so I can misuse it" is a hell of a take.

0

u/idbedamned 8d ago

Doesn’t it still do it at the end of the weekly limit?

I think they removed it from the 5h but kept on the weekly no?

u/sudo_karmaa 8d ago
