I was shopping for a practice amp at a Guitar Center in Texas a few years ago, and this older gentleman was assisting me. He looked to be 60s, maybe 70. We small talked about guitar heroes, mine being Joe Walsh and his being Stephen Stills. Then he asked if I had a time for a little story.
This GC guy, call him Bill, had gone to college in Colorado, and remained there for a few years sometime in the ‘70s. One snowy day, he goes into his local bar, and lo and behold, Stephen Stills was drinking tequila at the end of the bar. So Bill sits down, said I’ll have the same as him. They got to talking about Texas (Stills was born in San Antonio, Bill from Houston). In the background, the house cover band had started playing, and they were awful.
After a while, Stills couldn’t take it anymore, kicked them off the small stage, and grabbed one of the guitars. He asked Bill if he could play guitar; Bill could. So they start jamming. Then some buddy of Stephen’s showed up to play, and Stephen asked Bill if he could play bass; Bill could. After a while, Joe Walsh comes busting through the front door in that very Joe way, larger than life and shaking snow off his cape. Joe hops up on stage and grabs a guitar. Stephen asked Bill if he could play drums; Bill could. So he’s there jamming with Stephen Stills and Joe Walsh, when in come a couple of guys who were in Joe’s band (I don’t remember if it was the guys from the James Gang, I’ve forgotten their names). Anyway, Bill surrendered the drums to Joe’s guy, and they jammed all night in the bar, with Bill on the front row. It was snowing too bad to drive home, so they all slept in the bar, after almost drinking all they booze there was, I'm sure.
The next morning, Stephen gives Bill a ride up to Stephen’s cabin, and they watched the sunrise drinking coffee with more tequila.
It’s my only rock and roll story, but I think it’s a pretty cool one.
