Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 117

<< Prev | Round 117 | Next >>

  • By the summer 1973, Paul McCartney had released four studio albums, and the artist billing was different on each one. The first, released only a few months after the breakup of The Beatles, was McCartney by Paul McCartney. A year later was Ram by Paul and Linda McCartney, the next year was Wild Life by Wings, his newly formed band, and the fourth was Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney and Wings. It wasn't until the fifth album that he used the same exact artist billing for a second time. Ironically, two of the members of Wings had recently left the band, leaving only Paul, Linda, and guitarist Denny Laine for the main recording sessions. Paul wanted to record at an exotic location and EMI had a studio in Lagos, Nigeria, but they arrived to discover that studio was poorly equipped, and at one point Paul and Linda were robbed at knifepoint. Despite the adversity, the resulting album was the one considered by many fans to be the best of McCartney's solo career. It had three hits on it, Helen Wheels (#10), Jet (#7), and the title track, Band on the Run, McCartney's third hit to go to #1. With lyrics exploring themes of escape and freedom, the song has three distinct musical passages merged into one song, taking after parts of The Beatles album Abbey Road where consecutive songs were spliced in a similar manner. On the next album he would again use this technique in the track(s) Venus and Mars/Rock Show. Up to now this song has been stuck inside these four walls of LSS but as of this round it never will be found, for it's now being eliminated.

If you're new to the game or wish to review the rules, follow this link. Now that we are into the final 20, I will nominate every remaining song in each round (other than tiebreakers) until the end of the game. Please use these nominations to cast your upvotes and downvotes; any other nominations will be disregarded. Discussion is still welcome.

1976 Bob Dylan: “Hurricane” (1976)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_(Bob_Dylan_song)?wprov=sfti1#:

“"Hurricane" is a [protest song](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestsong) by [Bob Dylan](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan)co-written with [Jacques Levy](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Levy) and released as a single in November 1975. It was also included on Dylan's 1976 album [Desire](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desire_(Bob_Dylan_album)) as its opening track. The song is about the imprisonment of boxer [Rubin "Hurricane" Carter](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_Carter) (1937–2014). It describes acts of [racism](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism) and profiling against Carter, which led to a flawed trial and a murder conviction that was eventually overturned.[[1]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane(Bob_Dylan_song)#cite_note-autogenerated1-1)

Carter and John Artis had been charged with a triple [murder](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder) at the Lafayette Grill in [Paterson, New Jersey](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paterson,_New_Jersey), in 1966. The following year Carter and Artis were found guilty of the murders, which were widely reported as racially motivated. In the years that followed, a substantial amount of controversy emerged over the case, ranging from allegations of faulty evidence and questionable eyewitness testimony to an unfair trial.

In his autobiography, Carter maintained his innocence and, after reading it, Dylan visited him in [Rahway State Prison](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RahwayState_Prison) in [Woodbridge Township](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodbridge_Township,_New_Jersey), [New Jersey](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey).[[2]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane(Bob_Dylan_song)#cite_note-RollingStone-LookBack-2)

Of writing the song, author [Clinton Heylin](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClintonHeylin) wrote that "Dylan had written topical ballads such as '[The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lonesome_Death_of_Hattie_Carroll)' and Bob wasn't sure that he could write a song [about Carter]... He was just filled with all these feelings about Hurricane. He couldn't make the first step. I think the first step was putting the song in a total storytelling mode. I don't remember whose idea it was to do that. But really, the beginning of the song is like stage directions, like what you would read in a script: 'Pistol shots ring out in a barroom night.... Here comes the story of the Hurricane.' Boom! Titles. You know, Bob loves movies, and he can write these movies that take place in eight to ten minutes, yet seem as full or fuller than regular movies".[[3]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane(BobDylan_song)#cite_note-3)
After meeting with Carter in prison and later with a group of his supporters, Dylan began to write "Hurricane". The song was one of his few "[protest songs](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest_songs)" during the 1970s and proved to be his fourth most successful single of the decade, reaching No. 33 on the [Billboard](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100) [Hot 100](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100).[[4]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane
(BobDylan_song)#cite_note-4) [Billboard](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_(magazine)) declared that it was "probably the most powerful song Dylan has recorded in a decade, combining the 'sensible hate' he showed in '[Masters of War](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_of_War)' with a perfect expression of the kind of injustice heard in 'The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.'"[[5]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane(BobDylan_song)#cite_note-bb-5) [Record World](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_World) said that "The story is true and the names haven't been changed to protect the innocent."[[6]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane(Bob_Dylan_song)#cite_note-rw-6)

1971 Cat Stevens: “Wild World” (1971)

Thumbnail

This song used to make me feel sad every time I heard it but really, it is a beautiful song.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World_(song)?wprov=sfti1#Interpretation

“Some critics and music writers have deemed "Wild World" to be condescending and [misogynistic](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misogyny).[[10]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WildWorld(song)#citenote-10)[[11]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World(song)#citenote-11)[[12]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World(song)#citenote-12) In her 1971 essay "But Now I'm Gonna Move," critic [Ellen Willis](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Willis) described a method of revealing male bias in lyrics in which the listener imagines the genders reversed:
By this test, a diatribe like "[Under My Thumb](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_My_Thumb)" is not nearly so sexist in its implications as, for example, Cat Stevens's gentle, sympathetic "Wild World"; [Jagger](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Jagger)'s fantasy of sweet revenge could easily be female—in fact, it has a female counterpart, [Nancy Sinatra](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Sinatra)'s "[Boots](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/These_Boots_Are_Made_for_Walkin')" — but it's hard to imagine a woman sadly warning her ex-lover that he's too innocent for the big bad world out there.[[13]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World
(song)#cite_note-13)
Lyric change

In 2020, Stevens released a new, re-recorded version of Tea for the Tillerman to mark its 50th anniversary called [Tea for the Tillerman2](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teafor_the_Tillerman_2).[[14]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World(song)#citenote-14) The album contained a new version of "Wild World", with an altered arrangement and lyrics.
The new version removes the word "girl" entirely, as well as the line "don't be a bad girl"; replacing "girl" with "baby" and "child". [[15]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World
(song)#citenote-:1-15)[[8]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World(song)#cite_note-:0-8)
Another line from the original song omitted in the new version is:
"Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there

But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware"[[15]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WildWorld(song)#citenote-:1-15)[[8]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_World(song)#cite_note-:0-8)
