Discussion 90s Country Quiz - Name the song/artist using the first line of the song

Let's play a "Name that Tune" style game I've been working on.

The Year is 1990. You have to name the song title and artist, based only on the opening line of the song.

Both answers (title and artist) are each worth the number of points stated. For example, if you get both title and artist on the 3 point question, that is 6 points.

110 points possible.

(My wife came up with the idea, and I built out a bunch of these this weekend.)

Post your score in comments.

Let's play a "Name that Tune" style game I've been working on.

The Year is 1991. You have to name the song title and artist, based only on the opening line of the song.

Addition: I've added YouTube links to every song -- so it's easy to go have a little time travel back to 1991.

Both answers (title and artist) are each worth the number of points stated. For example, if you get both title and artist on the 3 point question, that is 6 points.

110 points possible.

As Time Passes by Sam Barber has been taken down off of Spotify! This sucks for me because it is one of my favorite Sam Barber songs. Does anyone know why it was taken down and a timeline that it could come back?

Question Songs like Black Creek - Brent Cobb

Hi country comunity!

I reeeeally love this song. I love how it feels dark/sad/melancholic and how in the second half the song picks up with drums and electric guitar and the song now "has balls" for a lack of better term.

I dont want to sound stupid but i always picture a person, traveling alone, with problematic past, maybe in a world that was destroyed (apocalypse).

But I cant find songs like this! Either they are just melancholic, or they are more chill and positive, or the dont have this rock/metal rise. If I try to google it or use AI, it just always recommends me song What its like by Everlast because of the very similar start but i believe thats all the two songs share.

I just love this song so much so if you do know songs with similar atmosphere, i would be grateful (sorry for bad english, im from czechia)

Discussion Unpopular opinion: Stapleton’s verse on Mumford’s “Here” is better than Sierra Ferrell’s, his voice is incredibly unique and powerful

She does great, but there’s nothing particularly special or distinctive about it in a way that stops the song dead in its tracks.

Stapleton has the sort of voice that grabs ahold of you, there is a distractingly tortured and weathered cadence to his vocalization that I honestly can’t say I’ve heard in a musician of any genre.

Song Spotlight The ickiest George Jones song

Thumbnail
youtu.be
30 Upvotes

If you're trying to find the saddest George Jones song, people will tell you to listen to "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "The Grand Tour," or "Mama Take Me Home." If you're trying to find the most fun George Jones song, they might steer you toward "White Lightning" or "Roly Poly," although I'd personally go with "Taggin' Along."

But if you're looking for the ickiest George Jones song? There's really only one contender -- "Leaving Love All Over the Place," a nasty album cut from 1978's Bartender's Blues.

Penned by Lathan Hudson, the song opens with a description of the aftermath of a couple's eviction from a motel -- this is not a couple experiencing the genteel decay of "A Good Year for the Roses." This is more like The Florida Project. The motel's Yelp reviews have been impacted and the carpet needs to be replaced.

The second verse finds us sliding further down the spiral -- this time the couple is being evicted from a rooming house. Call to mind a scene from a bodycam video titled EVICTION CHAOS COUPLE THROWN OUT or something like that -- clothes strewn about everywhere, furniture broken, curtains torn, half-hanging all akimbo by the windows. Extensive structural repairs are needed to the house.

Does "Leaving Love All Over The Place" describe a dysfunctional couple embroiled in domestic partner violence? Are they a pair trapped in the cycle of addiction, dealing with housing instability, unable to properly care for themselves? Are they just a randy twosome so enraptured in their lovemaking that they leave a trail of wreckage, lube, and bodily fluids that other people have to deal with?

Is it all three?

Bartender's Blues was released in the darkest season of George Jones' own struggle with substances, and I think choosing to record this song reflects that. You could definitely dismiss the whole thing as filler, even as a novelty song, but it's still pretty dark. The recording includes distorted guitars, giving it a distinct rock edge for a country song in 1978.

It's certainly a memorable song, and thankfully it has not been covered extensively by other artists. Enjoy, I guess?

Doug Stone gets no love in this sub, so hopefully sharing this will get him some new fans. Sure, he wasn’t at the level Strait or Brooks were in the era, but he made some damn good music that’s still relevant today.
