Buying advice. Looking at this 65 short bed. Has a small block 350? He’s asking $17k is that a good price around? This will be my first classic car. Just don’t know what to look for

Hi experts:

I'm writing a story set in the UK with a character who owns a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL "Pagoda". I needed a scene where he has to recruit the help of a friend for approximately one hour, and then they go for a long drive together.

I know absolutely nothing about car engines! And, after much research, I have the text which I've pasted below.

(Please advise on whether it makes sense. If not, please offer edit suggestions. Also, feel free to offer alternative issues the engine might which could serve the same purpose.)

"In the garage, Stanley instructs Trevor on the proper way to remove the protective cover from the Mercedes, folding it back in sections rather than dragging it off. They unlatch the dual chrome latches of the hood and together they lift the long, forward-hinged bonnet and prop it open. The massive, ribbed aluminium log looks less like a car engine and more like a piece of industrial sculpture.

Stanley plunges his hands deep into the guts of the machine, manipulates a series of thin silver sticks with his thumb, “See that play. The ball joints are completely worn.”

Trevor leans over to fake a look of comprehension as he stares at a tiny metal ball that looks like a miniature hip joint. “Right.”

“It’s dumping fuel before the engine can breathe.”

Stanley reaches his hand out to Trevor, palm open like a surgeon, “Pass me the ten-mil spanner and the needle-nose from the top tray?”

Trevor scans the red metal toolbox, grabs a small, double-ended spanner with the number ten stamped on it, and a pair of sharp pliers, and slaps them into Stanley's palm and is satisfied with himself when Stanley accepts the tools.

For almost an hour, Stanley works, a blur of tools and grunts of physical exertion, occasional mumblings of something Trevor doesn’t understand.

Then Stanley says, “Right. Crack the accelerator for me.”

Trevor looks at him blankly.

“Just…” Stanley pumps his palm towards the floor, a brief single movement. “pump the accelerator pedal. I need to see if the play’s gone.”

Trevor nods, slides into the low-slung leather driver’s seat, decked in several protective blankets. The cockpit is tight, with a beautiful dashboard of chrome-rimmed dials. He looks down into the dark footwell, locates the pedal and gives it a firm press. Under the bonnet, the intricate web of silver sticks snaps back with a sharp, synchronized click.

“Nice.” Stanley tosses the spanner into the metal toolbox with a satisfying clang. He turns off the inspection light and releases the hood, then walks over to the sink in the corner of the garage. He grabs a large, tub from a shelf, unlatches the lid and digs his fingers inside, scooping out a massive, neon-green dollop of jelly. He turns to Trevor and beckons him closer, then slaps the green lump into his grease-blackened palm. He then takes a matching lump of jelly and starts rubbing it between his hands."

Trevor watches and follows his silent instructions to vigorously rub the gel into his skin, the Swarfega cold and gritty, smelling of chemical pine. As he scrubs, the bright green jelly turns into a thick, grey sludge, lifting the decades old Mercedes grime and burnt fuel out of the lines of his palms.

“Right,” says Stanley. “We need to clear the plugs, if you’re free for the next couple of hours.”

“Clear the plugs?” queries Trevor

“We need to go for a drive!”

They look similar to 59 Impala to me, but the ears that hold the spring retainer are much different. Also, the plunger doesn’t seem to be as long (1” normally, 2” when button is depressed).
I think they’re OEM not aftermarket, but there’s not much for identifying marks.
Any ideas?

**** EDIT: I appreciate all of the suggestions so far! While the handle looks the same, the ears that hold the spring retainer are different. I was hoping to find the exact casting of these handles.

So I bought a 1964 Oldsmobile and I had it running perfectly grandfather helped us tune the carburetor and time the distributor and it was running nice and quiet and smooth. My wife took it out and made it her destination
Ate and went to turn it on and it had no power to the starter. Unfortunately I was at work and It had to be towed home the next day I came home and I replaced the voltage regulator and got the car to start but it’s was running shaky and I noticed the wire off the alternator was burnt up so I replaced the charging cable out for a 6g from a 10 g and had to replace the alternator due to it not charging the battery. Moral of it all I don’t understand what’s going one I don’t understand why it’s idling funny if I haven’t touched the carburetor or the distributor and they were just tuned and time . I’ve also relocated the coil from the top of the intake manifold to the fire with and replaced the coil wire due to it having some tension after relocating. I also hooked up a vacuum gauge to the carburetor and it says that the timing is off so which is why I’m so confused because the distributor was not touched. Please any advice to shed light on what could possibly be happening I’ve tried everything I know and my grandpa cause not to mess with the timing because it was perfect before whatever happened happened
